38 Studios, the company founded by former Red Sox pitcher Kurt Schilling, filed for bankruptcy soon after Amalur's release. This was problematic for Rhode Island, which had granted them a 75-million-dollar loan in 2010, and was still owed over $100M in liabilities. Over the next half decade, the state's lawsuits against 38 Studios' execs and backers recouped approximately $61M. Schilling claims to have lost upwards of $50M in his company's failure.
