General Questions

Below are some question I have been asked or ones that I feel deserved to be answered in FAQ form. If you have anything to add or think something should be added to this section let me know, I'm more then willing to expand it.

General

Q) Should I play this?

A) The way of the samurai series is a unique type of game, so ultimately I don't have anything to compare it to. If you've played wots1 or 2 and enjoyed it I can't imagine you not enjoying this game. Otherwise you might want to try to rent it, though with all you can do in this game it's the type of game you want to buy not rent if you enjoy it.

Q) How do I unlock all moves for all the stances?

A) Each sword has at least a single unique move so you will need all 102 sword to master all 750ish skills. When you have all the sword you'll need money or lots of time, I'd suggest trying to get over 100,000 yen. Finally for greater speed I suggest getting the partner Yukino to live with you.

With all the above done grab 3 swords you want to master and on day 5 in the west side posting station shop you can buy all 3 types of scrolls that let you learn moves (basic, advance and special) so get a full set of each and set them to you quick item menu. Then you hit left, right and up on the d-pad to start to learn all the moves, when you can't learn any more hit down on the d-pad to select the next sword and do the same, buying more scrolls when needed.

When you're done with your 1st 3 weapons speak with Yukino to access the sword safe to get 3 more swords and repeat until you run out of money, at which point you'll want to kill the merchant to get your money back then exit Amana. Repeat as many times as you need to master all swords.

As I said above money or time is needed to master swords, if you prefer you can just keep using every sword in the game until it's mastered... but that will take likely hundreds of hours.

Q) How to earn trust?

A) There are many different people you can earn trust for, some people need to trust you for endings and job brokers give different jobs when they trust you more, as well if you're trusted by a faction they'll greet you when they see you.

For the job brokers trust is simple, just do jobs. How much they trust you is shown by how much you get per job. At the max per job 600 yen, you're either at max trust or right next to it.

For people trust in earned in different ways, but most of the time it's speaking with them/ answering questions or doing inklings with them involved. For any of them involing endings you'll know you have enough trust built with the person if they say your name as you walk by... or at least react saying something.

Q) What is the best weapon in the game?

A) There isn't a "best" weapon and I'd argue that any weapon can be the best if you like using it. Forgot to change this when I rated the swords.... anyways check the sword section starting with the Sword Overview for details, this is strictly my own opinion of the swords to know if the sword suits you you'll just have to try it out.

Also, I will say that having a weight of 0 on a weapon is best, if a weapon has a weight of 2+ chances are all of your combos will be blocked after the 1st attack hits... if it hits. This is why fast swords are generally better but again if you can use a sword with a high weight well do so, it's all up to you.

Q) What is the Nobunaga Event?

A) This is an event that happens after a 12 inklings. You'll know it's happening when you go to the map and every area has an inkling.

The event itself has a Fujimori Vassel inform Shuzen that Nobunaga has invaded.

After the event most NPC's have new things to say, it's a hard to miss and very important event.

Q) Where is the DLC?

A) The body parts and accessories will be in their respective menus. The weapon parts from the DLC is sold my the DLC merchant who appears in guard gate, on the western side by the gate.

Money

Q) How can I avoid pick pockets?

A) 1st there are two different ones, a girl and a ronin in a blue outfit with the Furoshiki accessory (a blue sash across the chest).

The girl is easy to deal with as once she bumps you it lets you know how much she stole, so just speak to her and select the number that she stole to get it back.

The reason for this question is the ronin pick pocket, he can be really annoying as he takes a good % of your money. The best way to avoid him getting your money is to be aware of him, not all blue ronin will be pickpockets but if you get close he'll start chasing you, at this point I'd suggest one of two things: 1) draw your sword, it'll make him draw his and you fight. 2) Exit the area, either running away from him or quick traveling to another location.

If he does manage to get your money quickly hit him to again make him fight you. This attack can be a simple kick, you don't need to draw your sword, he will run away really fast so be quick about it.

Q) When can I buy the best item in the stores?

A) They're pretty much all avaiable on day 5, check the Shop lists section for a complete list but the key ones are:

In Omiki Town you can get Ginsing, chick cakes and chicken cakes. In Takatane you can get Golden Eggs and jumbo radishes. In the posting station you can get every type of scroll.

The only other item you might want to be buying is arcane potions that are from the Fabled merchant, and it's not linked to days just gotta get him to show up.

Q) How do I get the Fabled Merchant to show up?

A) He shows up based on the number of Inklings you've done so every 3 events he should show up near the waterfall at the road. If you're not sure how many inklings you've done just do one, go to the road and if he isn't there repeat until he is.

Upgrades

Q) What should I select when I upgrade?

A) Random, upgrade 1 quality at a time and aim for a minimum total increase to keep. If what he does doesn't meet your standards just re-forge until it does. I do agree with Pang Tong's guide of about +20 overall stat increase, personally I don't have a problem with a +17 if it's +15 attack and +2 defense... so ultimately it's up to your own play style.

Q) What affects upgrades?

A) This is something I experimented with. Would having the village the blacksmith is in liking you help your odds of getting good results on upgrades? Ultimately I tested several ideas, getting 600 yen a job in Takatane, getting the Dojima brother back together and finally I decided what about weapon level and got a weapon to lvl 50 before doing a single upgrade.

I'll list my exact results but in the end nothing really helped, if fact doing nothing got the best results so ultimately if you want to upgrade a sword, I'd suggest starting on IK upgrading at either blacksmith until your weapon is maxed or you run out of money and kill the blacksmith to get your money back.

The table below is my results, I used the same weapon, select random upgrade with 99,999 money and keep selecting re-forge until I ran out of money. This means I tried 199 times each run, recording whenever the result was above 15.

For my results I've made table, made better since it's a formatted FAQ:

Total increase16-1920-2425-29
Nothing done554
600 yen jobs 1310
600 yen jobs 2912
600 + brothers together832
level 50 weapon1042

As you can see, maybe something affects how likely you are to get good upgrades but imo there really isn't anything you can do, so just keep trying.

Q) Is defense pointful?

A) This question comes mainly from people who have played the game for a long time and have max HP (9999) and most if not all skills matched. At that point few attacks will hurt you and the ones that do will do little damage. So at that point I could accept not bothering with defense, however if you haven't matched most of the moves with 9999 HP the slight more attack you can get with just upgrading attack isn't worth it imo.

Q) What do I get by leveling weapons?

A) Nothing until you hit the max level of 50. At that point that weapon cannot cannot be destroyed and doesn't generate heat. If you dual weild with another weapon neither will generate heat.

Q) What's the best way to gain experience for a weapon?

A) You gain experience for two things, killing and hitting people. Killing gains you 10 exp, and hitting someone gives 5 (1 if they block). So what you want to do to quickly gain experience is not use instant kills and just use basic attacks unitl they die. So if you hit someone 3 times and they die on the 3rd, you'll gain 20 exp, 10 for the 1st two hits and 10 for the kill hit.

Doing redemption missions and just using the basic square attack I genearlly gain about 2000-3000 exp per run.

Q) I've broken my sword can it be fixed?

A) Thankfully, yes! In the 3rd game they finally made it so the Dojima brothers are able to fix a broken sword for 2000 yen. To do so speak with them, ask to improve your sword and select durabilty.

Q) What's the max weight on a sword?

A) 3. Even when creating a custom sword that should have a total weight of 8, the game maxes it at 3. However 3 is rather crippling, so unless you're sure the sword will work with such weight don't do it.

Q) Does weight affect dual weilding?

A) Yes, if you have 2 sword with 0 weight they will be faster then 2 swords with 3 weight each. Now if you have one sword with 0 weight and one with 3 weight it takes about the average of the two.

Killre did some testing himself on this and I agree with him that once it takes the average it simple drops the decimal point. So ultimately what this means is if you want to be fast with dual weilding try to make sure the average of the 2 blades is 1, meaning either a 2 weight and a 0 weight or a 1 weight and 1 weight max. This is strictly my opinion, as more weight can still work.

Jobs

Q) How should I search for something/someone?

A) I always recommend coming up with a plan, either going north to south/ east to west or in from the outside in.

What I mean is in a place like Takatane where it's really open, I find it's best to just start at the northern tip near Dojima and start to search going east to west as you make your way south. In the castles, Minori or Amana it's sometimes best to search in circles, so start on the outside and then work your way in.

Either way when searching remember 99% of the time what you're looking for will be right beside a wall or the side of a building.

Thanks and Credit

Well I do want to 1st give thanks to Mwulf, the FAQ he made greatly helped me in getting the ending way back when I first got the game, so ultimatlely some of my endings come from strageties I got from his FAQ. As well as the info for partners.

Next is Fuuinashi who gave a great ending guide for ending 22/ grim reaper title as well as how to get partners to like you, also Hanzaemon_ for giving me the idea of making the parts section as well as many of your posts on the board.

Also many thanks to the Japenese wiki (http://wikis.jp/samurai3/) for sword and cat info.

Many people also made a list of what partners do, so thanks to TheOriginalMax, Learii, mookyking, Amidamaru_, Drak_Swordsman, Sairos, XDerekTheRedX and The_Bones for posting info on partners to let me know what's right.

Finally a list of people who assisted with me getting all 102 swords, starting with Pang Tong and the awesome guide you made, helped me get great version of many of the swords out there. Kaitou253 and Generic_Dude for posting the complete list on the board and finally a bunch of people that assisted me in their own post to find more swords: lain iwakura, TheEyeNeverLie, Zagatosan, mookyking, Scynt. Garibaldi72 Also e-mailed me an additional location for Endou as well as mention me missing Kizume.

For update 1.20 I also want to thank Zuriga for pointing out the Phantasm Pommel, as well as location for Kuzu-no-ha. togurothman for listing the method to get a golden egg from the guard family in Omiki town. And big thanks to KentachiSamurai who mentioned Kane, Itsuse stalker for golden eggs... hope you figure out some of those other methods!

For 1.31, Killre added a few things, he tested methods on dual weilding, the partner Osada, gave me ideas for questions and have me stats on 4 parts (Plain Wood Grip, Plain Wood Pommel, Deity of the Forest Grip, Deity of the Forest Long Blade). Thanks man and hope to hear from you again.

For 2.00 thanks to GundamZaphon, gave me info on the dark evil grip part, as well as info for "justice for all", "samurai punisher! (2)" jobs (I did have another person mention this one but I won't post an e-mail so I have no means to credit it).

Contact Info

First and formost there are many people on the Board that are more knowledable then I, so posted any problems and questions there first is a good idea. If you want to contribute or point out any problems in my guide you can e-mail me or send a message over psn or live, chances are though if you need a timely responce e-mail isn't the way to go just so you know.

If you want to contribute let me know how to credit your contribution! I hate the idea of posting someone e-mail and if that's all I got then you're unlikely to get any credit for what you gave me.
