Game Trivia

  • In the Russian version of the game by 1C Company, the No Russian mission is not available for play. In Japan and Germany, if the player kills a civilian, the game will restart from the last checkpoint with the "You killed a civilian!" message. In the Japanese version, Makarov's line, "Remember, no Russian" is mistranslated as "Kill them, they are Russians." This was criticized as the plot of the game was centered around the terrorist's motivations and as a result, the mistake caused some confusion.

  • The game contains a controversial mission known as "No Russian" which the player is given the option to play at the beginning of the game. Within this mission, the player takes the role of a CIA operative who joins a Russian terrorist group and must take part in killing innocent civilians in an airport. Subsequently, the Russian release of the game has omitted this stage due to concerns.

  • Modern Warfare 2 was pushed out the gate just 2 years after the release of the first Modern Warfare. Given the hasty development schedule, there wasn't enough time for developer Infinity Ward to properly playtest the game, leading to numerous gameplay imbalance problems including the much hated One Man Army perk + Noob Tube combo. Shortly after the game's launch, Infinity Ward lost most of its development staff, leaving nobody around to give the game a much needed balance patch.

  • The game was banned in the United Arab Emerates (UAE) over the perceived mistreatment of Islam. A contributing reason was the Favela map, which had a picture frame inscribed with Quranic verse hanging in a bathroom. When Activision learned this move was a religious no-no, the map was pulled from rotation. It later returned in an edited state, causing the ban to be lifted.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out on November 10th, 2009, and the launch trailers ended with "11-10-09" blinking on in sequence like the countdown before an explosion. Presumably, this was meant to signify the "exploding" international tensions in the game's plot which results in America being invaded, or just the ramped-up action in the game.

  • General Shepard: "The more things change, the more they stay the same. Boundaries shift, new players step in; but power always finds a place to rest its head. We fought and bled alongside the Russians; we should've known they’d hate us for it. History is written by the victor, and here I am, thinking we'd won. But you bring down one enemy and they find someone even worse to replace him. Locations change, the rationale, the objective. Yesterday's enemies are today’s recruits. Train them to fight alongside you and pray they don’t eventually decide to hate you for it, too."

Connection to Other Media

  • The achievement/trophy for killing a Juggernaut in any Spec Ops mission, "I'm the Juggernaut…" is a reference to a popular online video of somebody dubbing over The Juggernaut from the X-Men cartoon series, stating "I'm the Juggernaut, b****!"

  • In the Spec Ops missions "Suspension" and "Wreckage", the cargo ships on the river below the bridge are the same as the ship from the mission "Crew Expendable" and multiplayer map "Wet Work" from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

  • The level name S.S.D.D may be a reference to Stephen King's novel, 'Dreamcatcher'. S.S.D.D ("Same S***, Different Day") is a phrase used through out the book by the main characters. Also, Shepherd's first line in the cut scene, "The more things change, the more they stay the same" might also be a small reference to King's 'Thinner', where the line is spoken.
