A flashy and fun action title
-
Bayonetta is a flashy, fun, and deep action title from start to finish. At the very start of the game, players are introduced to the glamor and flash that set the tone for the game. Its catchy opening, coupled with quirky characters feels different from other titles out these days. Bayonetta follows the story of a heroine of the same name. Bayonetta, much like the rest of the game, has a feeling of over the top glamour. Bayonetta has been asleep for 500 years and after being awaken, her memories are fragmented. The story for the most part felt sufficient enough for an action title.
While Bayonetta started to drag on a bit towards the later parts of the game, Bayonetta on many instances shine from a game play standpoint. Bayonettas action is deep and flashy. Bayonetta can mix and match long strings of attacks that are both fun and appealing to the eye. At the finish of certain combos are a shadowlike attack that caps of the combos in devastating fashion. In addition, users can use guns to keep enemies at bay. At times, users will also have the ability to perform a torture attack which allows Bayonetta to inflict devastating damage in over the top fashion.
There are numerous combos available to the user, providing a deep combo system. In addition, users can purchase additional moves throughout the game, adding depth as users advance in the game. Bayonetta can also dodge attacks. A well timed dodge will trigger an event where time is slowed, allowing Bayonetta to inflict more damage while enemies are essentially frozen. Moreover, boss fights for Bayonetta for the most part felt fun and intense. Many boss fights felt grand in nature, usually capping off with Bayonetta utilizing her hair to create ridiculous finishers on the bosses.
Bayonetta for the most part looks good, with flashy and good looking attacks during long combinations. Character models also look solid. The game runs smoothly, without drops in its frame rate. The story at times are also presented in what appears to be paused film rolls, which sort of adds a unique feel. When cinematic cut scenes do play during the game, it also looks quite good. The music for the most part were easy on the eyes, especially the catchy song that plays frequently. Voice acting was also solid during the game.
Towards the end of the game, Bayonetta dragged a bit. While the combat system was deep, it felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again. The flashy uniqueness of Bayonettas combat lost its muster a bit towards the end. With all that said, Bayonetta is still a very fun action title, providing depth and plenty of fun sequences. I would definitely recommend a purchase given the cheap price it is at now. -
