Next to each section of the guide contains a three-letter code. Hit CTRL+F to access the "Find" menu, type in the three-letter code, and keep searching (should be the second find) until you find the section you inquire! I have thereby changed information in Copyright Information and Guide Usage Rules. Also, there have been minor grammar alterations throughout the guide. ========================================================== January 3, 2004 -- Version 10.0 ========================================================== Welcome to another new year, ladies and gentlemen. Here's what I've done: ALTERATIONS - Another new year, another change to the Copyright Information section that involves the year, among other things. - Changes have been made to the Author Contact section. ========================================================== October 4, 2003 -- Version 9.0 ========================================================== Well, I made a couple of quick revisions to this guide. ALTERATIONS - I suppose this isn't too important, but I changed the format of the guide, so it is now done on WordPad instead of Word. - Changes have been made to the Copyright Information section. - An update has been made to "Chaos Emeralds and the Secret Zone", because it was not clear what had to be done in order to get the emerald. - I never noticed this, but the Quick-Find tab for "Characters" has been wrong for quite some time. It has been fixed. ========================================================== July 4, 2003 -- Version 8.0 ========================================================== Happy "Fourth" everybody. I did a few updates to this guide in order to make the information more precise. ALTERATIONS - With a new year, "Copyright Information" had to be slightly tweaked. - Included the fact that hedgehogs are insectivores, not rodents, in "Characters" - Reformatted the "Controls" section - Slight tweaking of grammar in "Zone Descriptions" - Included more credits in the "Acknowledgments" section ========================================================== November 28, 2002 -- Version 7.0 ========================================================== Several additions and changes in this update! To make this more informative of an FAQ, I have done the following: ADDED SECTIONS RENAMED SECTIONS - "Codes, Cheats, Glitches, and - "Moves" ---> "Controls" Oddities" - "Guide Usage Rules" ALTERATIONS OTHER NEW STUFF - More grammar changes - Quick-Find Reference Added - Deletion of unnecessary borders - Realized "Oh yeah, this game takes place on South Island, not Mobius!" and changed that tidbit throughout the guide ========================================================== November 16, 2002 -- Version 6.0 ========================================================== As CJayC has said time and time again, there truly can never be a Final Version of the guide. Therefore, I have made this addition. This incarnation includes the following additions/changes: ALTERED SECTIONS - Just a few alignment issues that have been bugging me - Brief, updated character descriptions - Minor tweaks of grammar throughout ========================================================== November 17, 2001 -- Final Version ========================================================== Yes, it is the final version. Here we go!! RENAMED SECTIONS ALTERED SECTIONS - "Zones" ---> "Zone Descriptions" - "Badniks" - "The Chaos Emeralds and the Special - "Bosses" Stage" ---> "The Chaos Emeralds and - General Reformatting the Secret Zone" REMOVED SECTIONS - "Codes, Cheats, and Glitches" ========================================================== November 11, 2001 -- Version 3.3 ========================================================== Nothing really new here but this: SITES NEWLY HOSTING DOCUMENT - Sonic News <www.sonicstadium.org> ========================================================== October 29, 2001 -- Version 3.0 ========================================================== It's been awhile, hasn't it? ALTERED SECTIONS - "Characters" - "Items" - "Codes" - "Game Genie" - Special Stages - ASCII Art (Removed) - Spacing - Capitalization Problems - Name of Author - Aligning of Guide ========================================================== October 20, 1999 -- Version 0.0 ========================================================== Hot off the press! =============================================================================== [CHR] CHAPTER 03: Characters [CHR] =============================================================================== =========================================================== SONIC THE HEDGEHOG =========================================================== A resident of South Island, a speed demon, and a guy with a major chili dog obsession, Sonic the Hedgehog has evolved into one of the most beloved video game mascots of our time. When one mentions "Sega", one can't help but think of the blue, spiky-haired insectivore. ========================================================== DR. IVO ROBOTNIK ========================================================== Also known as Dr. Eggman, Robotnik is the series' characterization of evil. The red suit and fiery mustache define this guy, but nothing seems more prominent than the Egg-O-Matic, his transport device used to hover throughout the universe. ========================================================== SOUTH ISLAND INHABITANTS ========================================================== Instead of the standard "Damsel-in-Distress" theme found in many games in this genre (*cough* Mario *cough*), Sonic must rescue the residents of this island. Either the gravity level must be really high, or there's a lack of nutrition among the locals, but they are all really short. =============================================================================== [ITM] CHAPTER 04: Items [ITM] =============================================================================== ========================================================== ITEM(S) || USE(S) ========================================================== | Power Rings || These are basically what | | || your life depends on. | | || They are found all over | | || all of the zones except | | || for the Final Zone. If | | || you are attacked or fall | | || on spikes, you lose all | | || your rings. If you get | | || hit with no rings, you | | || lose one life. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Ring Monitor || This gives you ten rings. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Sonic Head Monitor || This gives you one extra | | || extra life. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Boot Monitor || This gives a temporary | | || speed boost. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Star Monitor || This gives temporary | | || invincibility. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Blue Sphere Monitor || This gives you a shield. | | || A shield allows Sonic to | | || sustain a hit without | | || penalty. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Lampposts || When you pass these blue | | || posts they turn red. | | || When you die, you will | | || start at the last | | || lamppost you touched. | | || You will start with the | | || time you hit the post | | || with, along with zero | | || rings. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Springs || These shoot you into the | | || air. | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Prison Eggs || You free the Mobius | | || inhabitants by jumping on | | || the lever on top of these | | || at the end of each zone, | | || with Scrap Brain Zone and | | || Final Zone as exceptions. | '--------------------------------------------------------' =============================================================================== [CTL] CHAPTER 05: Controls [CTL] =============================================================================== D-PAD LEFT, RIGHT - Walk or Run Left, Right D-PAD UP, DOWN - Look Up, Crouch A/B/C - Jump WHILE MOVING, D-PAD DOWN - Super Sonic Spin Attack (Roll) =============================================================================== [ZND] CHAPTER 06: Zone Descriptions [ZND] =============================================================================== One of these days, I may get a walkthrough in this guide. For now, here's some brief descriptions of the seven zones. Each zone has three acts, with the exception of The Final Zone. In each act, Sonic has ten minutes to race to the end, pass all the obstacles, and collect as many rings as possible. Pass as many lampposts as well, for if Sonic should die, he would restart at the last-touched lamppost rather than the beginning. Almost all enemies are worth 100 points, and bosses are worth 1,000. =========================================================== ZONE 01: Green Hill Zone =========================================================== Yes sir, there's only one hill. It is either a really large hill or a rather small island. Anyway, this is the tutorial zone of the game. There are three acts in each zone. At the end of the final act, there will be a boss, one of Robotnik's fantastic creations. Located in a valley of South Island, the main hazards are spikes, which are usually at the bottom of the zone floor. =========================================================== ZONE 02: Marble Zone =========================================================== In this zone, you are in an ancient temple-like area. Fire is the main hazard here. You are going to run into several blocks in this zone; to move them, just push the D-Pad in the block's direction. Watch out for the fire chase in Act Two. Don't get crushed by the chandeliers. Take the rare invincibility monitors to your advantage. In Act Three, there is a hidden room that can screw you up nice, but there is a hidden block as well. Good luck. =========================================================== ZONE 03: Spring Yard Zone =========================================================== The very first carnival zone made! This fun zone shows the standard of Genesis graphics: the overabundance of pastel colors. Watch out for the two Rollers in Acts One and Two. The Crabmeats can cause a problem in some of the block areas. Be careful on the moving blocks. Watch for the maceballs in the indoor areas. When the big green block follows you, spring when necessary to get tons of rings. Otherwise, keep running! Roll into certain places to unlock secret rooms with monitors. Most importantly, it's a game, so have fun. =========================================================== ZONE 04: Labyrinth Zone =========================================================== The first underwater zone made in history of the series. Apparently, an ancient civilization got flooded. The music is relaxing in this world, but you must be alert at all times; this zone is torture if you do not have enough skill. If there is a spike popping up, do not go to it head-on! Walk to it, walk back, and the Burrobot will pop up, but you can get it back almost immediately after. Patience is a virtue, remember. Orbinauts (well, they aren't called Orbinauts in this game, but they are in future games in the franchise) are major pains. Not only are they fast, but they are invulnerable most of the time. Keep an eye or two (or three if you have friends watching you, in which case you need to get some mental help) on them. When riding the escalators, you will see pig heads shooting fire. Do not attack; you cannot harm them. White lance-spikes will hurt you. Watch for levers and hit them quickly, because you can survive about 30 seconds without air, even with invincibility. Take care. ========================================================== ZONE 05: Star Light Zone ========================================================== This is my personal favorite zone in the game. It is also the easiest in my opinion. It took me what, six minutes to complete this zone? The zone is very simple, but be careful. Bombs are indestructible, so consider that. Windmills are good for a boost, but you cannot go against the draft. Take a break when you drop down a shaft and the game rolls very, very fast. When there are catapults, jump on the opposite side of the spike, and stay there! It will launch you. You need good timing to do this well, because you need to do it for the boss. The music is cool in this zone. Consider this a gift from Sonic Team. ========================================================== ZONE 06: Scrap Brain Zone ========================================================== You have now reached the mechanical zone. Robotnik no longer plays Mr. Nice Guy in this zone. Pure challenge will stun beginners. The levers are tricky; watch out. Platforms that drop and return are tricky, so run! When on the gears, push right to go fast, while pushing left will slow it down. Jump to get off. Watch for electrical faucets, slicing blades, the cup-with-the-mace- on-the-bottom-half-of-it, and the flamethrowers. Ball Hogs are dangerous, jump the bombs and hit the pig. In Act Three, you are underwater (did they think you didn't have enough stress from Labyrinth Zone?). Jump the platform to take the hard path, while stay on to take the easy path. Watch for the spikes, like in Labyrinth Zone. Then, at the end, spring up and go to the Final Zone. ========================================================== ZONE 07: The Final Zone ========================================================== More of a "Scrap Brain Zone - Act Four" than a truly different zone, this could have had a neat name, but the Sonic Team had to give it the bland "Final Zone" instead. See the Bosses section for this one. =============================================================================== [EMR] CHAPTER 07: The Chaos Emeralds and the Secret Zone [EMR] =============================================================================== The Chaos Emeralds are the things that make the world go 'round... or at least the world of Sonic the Hedgehog. There are six of them, each of a different color, and Robotnik wants these badly. You get them in Secret Zones. There are six Secret Zones, each one different for each emerald. In order to get to any Secret Zone, you need to have fifty rings by the end of Acts One or Two in any Zone, except for Scrap Brain Zone and the Final Zone. Jump into the giant ring. Jump farther for more points. You can get from ten points to ten thousand points per jump marker. ========================================================== SECRET ZONE BLOCK(S) || FUNCTION(S) ========================================================== | Blue Square Blocks || No Effect | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Red/White Circle Blocks || Jump Off These | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Transparent Red/White || Jump Through These | | Circle Blocks || | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Circle Goal Blocks || Ends the Secret Zone | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Square Multicolor Blocks || Loosens Tension Around | |(Surrounding Chaos Emerald)|| Chaos Emerald | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | "R" Circle Blocks || Reverses Spin Direction | |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Up/Down Circle Blocks ||Alters Speed of Secret Zone| |---------------------------||---------------------------| | Chaos Emerald || Completes Secret Zone | '--------------------------------------------------------' The general idea of each Secret Zone is to maneuver around until you collect the Chaos Emerald or reach the GOAL. The Secret Zone is really a trap, which is why the "GOAL" blocks are present; I know, it's rather misleading. Don't be fooled: you're here to get the Chaos Emerald. =============================================================================== [BDN] CHAPTER 08: Badniks [BDN] =============================================================================== There are SIXTEEN different varieties of Badniks. You have wanted to cheat in almost any video game to come out. Fortunately, we have a section for you special people. Here it is. ========================================================== IGN CODES ========================================================== BONUS POINTS For extra points, pass any zone in a certain amount of time. For the best bonus, enter the Debug Mode code. The clock will freeze and you'll always score a 50,000 bonus! Time Points 0:30 50,000 0:45 10,000 1:00 5,000 1:30 4,000 2:00 3,000 3:00 2,000 4:00 1,000 5:00 500 CONFUSED DEMO While the demo is playing, hold A + B + C. Sonic will get confused, lose his place, and possibly die. CONTROL MODE At the title screen, press Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right. While playing, you can pause the game and use A to restart, B for slow motion, and C for frame advance. DEBUG MODE Enable Control Mode (see above). After pressing Start to begin a game, hold A until you see Sonic. If you see a bunch of hex numbers on the top of the screen, you're in Debug Mode. To start debugging, press B, then you can select any sprite in that level and put it on the screen. To select a different sprite, press A, and to place it on the screen, press C. Note that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone. Also, instead of displaying the time elapsed, it displays the number of sprites currently on the screen. Control Mode functions work as well. Note: This only works on the first production releases of Sonic. EXTRA LIVES In Green Hill Zone (Act 3), there is a 1-Up at the very bottom of the level. Collect it along with enough rings to make 100 for a second life. Next, grab the 1-Up at the top of the loop-de-loop and die. Repeat until you have enough lives. GET ALL EMERALDS This cheat allows you to start at the First Level with all the Emeralds, and with lots of Continues. Use the Level Select cheat (see below) to get to the Special Zone. When you get the Emerald, and have entered into the First Zone, press Reset. Use the Level Select cheat to get to the Special Zone again. When you get the next Emerald, and have entered the First Zone, press Reset again. When you have all the Emeralds, continue on with the first level. You get to keep the Emeralds and the Continues accumulated so far. LEVEL SELECT At the title screen, hold A then press Up, Down, Left, Right. When you hear the chime, press Start. If that doesn't work, try this: At the title screen, press Up, Down, Left, Right, hold A, and press Start. After doing this once, you only need to hold Start + A to enter the level select. MARBLE ZONE SHORTCUT In Marble Zone (Act 3), you will find three chandeliers with spikes in them. Go to the far wall (on the right) and jump to the right to find some goodies. Now jump through the wall on the right again, but be careful of the other chandelier. SCRAP BRAIN TELEPORT On the last level (Scrap Brain), find the ledges that move right then left. Go to the left side of the wall and wait for the platform to move. As soon as it starts to move left, duck. You'll go through the wall. While here, press Left to teleport right and Right to teleport to the left. =========================================================== GAME GENIE CODES =========================================================== Remember Game Genie? These codes I have _not_ personally tested, and I think a few of them may be flukes. Why? Oh, because some of them mention S-curves and Tails, especially in the latter ones, all of which only occur in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. These codes I worry about have been marked with an asterisk (*). Several features were removed and/or changed, including the following: - Green Hill Zone had UFOs in the background - The nameless purple enemy in Spring Yard Zone was located in Marble Zone - Spring Yard Zone was known as "Sparkling Zone" - Scrap Brain Zone was known as "Clock Ork Zone," intending the name "Clock Work Zone, but the "W" was missing! Also, the background was different. =============================================================================== [ACK] CHAPTER 11: Acknowledgments [ACK] =============================================================================== PEOPLE WEBSITES -- Webmasters -- GameFAQs <www.gamefaqs.com> - For hosting this FAQ - For continuing to show great -- Myself appreciation for FAQ writers such - For writing this FAQ as myself -- Rob (AU620RS@aol.com) - For being the first host of this - For informing me that hedgehogs FAQ are insectivores, not rodents -- IGN Codes <codes.ign.com> - For providing the codes -- GameWinners <www.gamewinners.com> - For providing the Game Genie codes -- Green Hill Zone <ghz.emulationzone.org > - For information in the "Oddities" section =============================================================================== [ATC] CHAPTER 12: Author Contact [ATC] =============================================================================== I can be reached via e-mail at the following address: cyebersurpher@hotmail.com If you wish to e-mail me about game help, please put "Sonic the Hedgehog GEN" as the title of the e-mail. I also ask that you do not address questions about the GameGear version of the game and how it relates to this game. They are, of course, two different games. Furthermore, do not ask a question involving something already addressed in the guide, such as "How many zones are in the game?". I have received countless e-mails with questions like that. They aren't appreciated. =============================================================================== [GUR] CHAPTER 13: Guide Usage Rules [GUR] =============================================================================== DOs: -- Please e-mail me before publishing this guide.
