Question Details

  1. I think it may be the way the network is set up...

    - I have Windows Media Player 11.
    - I allowed it to share to the 360.

Now, my network is set up as follows...
    - Wireless router. My PC (laptop) gets internet wirelessly through an Ethernet card.
    - However, I have an Arcade and no wireless adapter, so my 360 is online via an Ethernet cable.

So basically... My PC is online wirelessly, and my 360 is online wired, through the same router. I have no problem getting online with the PC and the 360 separately, but I can't seem to link them together.

(Well, my PC seems to detect the 360, hence why Media Player 11 can detect it to allow sharing... But my 360 can't detect my PC.)

I presume I just need to invest in a wireless adapter, but I wanted to ask first.

  2. Additional Details:
    I have XP, unfortunately.
I've tried everything I can imagine to try. I tried force closing wmpnetwk.exe like you said... I've tried everything I can find on the internet and under the sun, and I'm making zero progress. The PC detects the X-Box, and I can access X-Box Live with no problems whatsoever, but my X-Box just will not detect my PC. Should I try something with my router? It's a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz Broadband router.

  1. Been awhile, but the only thing I can think of would be the UPnP is not being allowed under the exceptions under your firewall settings. Has to be a problem with the PC not allowing the 360 to recognize it.

  1. First of all, you don't need to invest in a wireless adapter. I have the same setup as you and streaming works fine. Make sure you have your monitored folders set up properly. If you have Vista you may have to enable sharing somewhere else.

Otherwise, after everything is setup and sharing is enabled, try to force close wmpnetwk.exe through the task manager. You'll have to wait a while for it to reload, but this usually works for me when my 360 loses track of my PC.

  3. try tversity, works much better than Windows media. also it will transcode just about any file format to play on the 360 while it streams. i love it.

  4. what's your OS?

if it's vista, upnp is referred to as network discovery, and can be enabled this way:

start- control panel- network and sharing center- find the network discovery option, click the little arrow, check the 'turn on network discovery' circle, click apply, now, depending on your network setup, you may have a few more options to choose from.

I wouldnt know, as I have a direct link to my wireless, which is a private network....

  5. I also have a wired XBOX 360 and wireless computer.
    - Make sure your Xbox 360 is connected via the router.
    - Open Windows Media Player.
(I'm going to translate from swedish so the following might be called something slightly different)
    - Open "alternatives" under "tools".
    - Click the "library" tab
    - Click "select folders" and choose the folders you wish to share on your network.
    - Restart computer
    - Go back to "library"
    - Click "configure sharing "
    - Tick "Share my media". You should there see your XBOX 360. (Assuming you allowed sharing in your network configurations from the Control Panel)

If you now start your XBOX 360 and go to "Video library" (if you want to stream movies) in "My Xbox" you should be able to see your computer. Choose that and you should see your folders your previously wanted to share. Begin streamin to file you want to.
