While not the first game in the series to support downloadable content, Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 2 did offer an early example of software backwards compatibility. If you had downloaded any of the song packs from the previous game, they would be immediately playable as soon as you booted up this game. However, while it was possible to download song packs from the first game through the second game's store, you would not be able to use them in the first game if downloaded that way.

This backwards compatibility would later be emulated in franchises such as Rock Band, where downloaded songs would be compatible with all future versions of the game.
