Interestingly, while the Proto Man mode was a DLC purchase in MegaMan 9, it's now available by default in MegaMan 10.
The main bosses of the Special Stages - available through DLC - are actually derived from the GameBoy MegaMan games, known as Rockman World in Japan. Enker (Special Stage 1) is from MegaMan: Dr. Wily's Revenge, Punk (Special Stage 2) is from MegaMan III, and Ballade (Special Stage 3) is from MegaMan IV.
The background music in the DLC Special Stage 1 is a remix of the Wily Fortress themes from MegaMan: Dr. Wily's Revenge on the GameBoy.
The first of the Wily Fortress stages contains a number of rebattles against 9 bosses from previous games in the MegaMan series: itself a number that exceeds the number of Robot Masters introduced with this game. Specifically-speaking, it contains bosses from MegaMan I-VI and MegaMan 9, the only prior 8-bit games in the series. Capcom likely skipped over more detailed games in the classic MegaMan series - such as MegaMan 7 and 8 and MegaMan & Bass - due to their graphic detail clashing significantly with the NES-style graphics of MegaMan 10.
