--- 1 - Introduction --- [INTR]
----------------------------------------

Welcome all, to this guide for the items in Mario Strikers Charged: Football.
Mario Strikers Charged: Football is the sequel to the brilliant GC game, Mario
Smash Football (For those of you in Europe, anyway. The rest of the world may
know it under a different game).

MSC:F is a very hetic, fast paced game which hosts 12 Captains, 8 Sidekicks, 17
stadiums; Not to mention an online mode, A scenario mode and three cups
(Trophys) to play for against computers.

But in this guide, we'll be looking, not at any of those modes, or team setups,
but rather, an aspect of gameplay that's often taken for granted; The items.

This guide goes through the items themselves and their properties/effects, how
they can help you, and hopefully through this guide, items will help you to
become a force to be reckoned with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
--- 2 - The Items Crash Course: What's the basics on items? --- [ITCC]
----------------------------------------------------------------------

==What are they?==
Items are objects which can be used on the pitch to help you either defend
against the opposition, opening up a scoring chance (Using an item defensively)
or to take them down to stop them from scoring, or to plainy get the ball back
(Using an item offensively).

As such, some items are more effective in some situations than others due to
their properties and behaviour when executed.

==How are they used?==
When you have an item in your possession, simpilly tap the C button (The lowest
button on your nunchuck) to deploy it. The way it is deployed varies. Check
Section 3 [ITML] for more details on deployment.

==Can items be stolen from you?==
Techniqually speaking, no. The only way it can be "stolen" is if a human member
of your team deploys the item without your permission, and of course, that
doesn't really count.

==How will I know if i've got an item?==
For one, when you get an item, the icon for it will appear on the pitch and
fade away. Don't worry, it can't be stolen. It's just the notification to let
you know. The icon will be accompanied by a sound on your Wiimote, should the
speakers be on. Finally, the icon will be displayed under your captain's name.

==How many items can you hold at any one time?==
Two, and only two.

==The order of my items means I have to deploy the item i'll need later, now,
so I can deploy the item I need now NOW. That's a waste of an item...==
Yes it is; For Shame!
If only you had remembered to shake the nunchuck of yours so you can swap the
item order... Remember that for next time!

==An example of items?==
Items in this game range from exploding bombs (Bomb-ombs) to veggies which
speed your currently controller character up (Mushrooms). Items can come in
alone, or in packs. Some average items, when they come alone, are enlarged and
in some situations, more useful. Likewise, packs are smaller in size when it
comes to these items, but obviously, are more abundant.

==How do you recieve items?==
You may recieve items through firing a charged shot in your opponent's half
(Holding the B Button for two seconds before releasing it) or through your
opponents tackling/body hitting one of your players when they are not in
possesion of the ball.
Please note that you do not recieve an item if your fouled player before the
ball hits the floor in a case of an attempted rebound shot.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------
--- 3 - The Items --- [ITML]
--------------------------------------

The following is the list of items you'll find in Mario Strikers Football:
Charged.
They are all listed in the following structure:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Name: The Name. This'll be accompanied by a description of what the item icon
looks like.

Effects: What the Item does, and how it affects you/the opponent.

Rareity: How often, and in what situation, you're likely to recieve this item.
NOTE - This could be altered by Item Cheats, if you have them activated. Check
Section 5 [CHEA] for details.

Numbers given: All possible numbers which could come together in a "Pack".
There are some items which can come together in 5's, or just alone.

Best time to use it: Self explanitory.

Deployed: The way it's deployed; The way it arrives on pitch. This can range to
falling from the sky to dropping out behind you.

Best used: These can either be Defensively or Offensively. This was explained
in Section 2, But in case you missed it;

"Items... can be used on the pitch to help you either -
- Defend against the opposition, opening up a scoring chance (Using an item
defensively)
- To take them down to stop them from scoring, or to plainy get the ball back
(Using an item offensively).

As such, some items are more effective in some situations than others due to
their properties and behaviour when executed."

Counter-Plan: What to do if you're on the recieving end of the item.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Lets begin with the order...

Bananas
Mushrooms
Homing Shells (Red)
Normal Shells (Green)
Spiky Shells (Red, Spiked)
Freezing Shells (Blue)
Bombs
Chain Chomps
Stars
Captain Ability

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Bananas - Well, that's misleading. It's the Banana, minus the Banana. Yeah,
it's just the skin.
---------------
Effects - Gives the player which steps onto it the slip up. This effectively
stops them in their current position while the slip over and get back up. Takes
at most, two seconds to recover.

Rareity - More likely when you're ahead, less likely when you're tied, rare
when you're REALLY behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Larger), 3 (Smaller), 5 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When you're being chased by the opposition, you have no
chance of getting away, and you can score with your current character.

Deployed - Dropped directly behind your character. Make sure you're facing the
right way!

Best used - Defensively, to get away from your opposition.

Counter-Plan - Run around the pack, if you can. It takes time, but it's the
safest way. You could try running in between the bananas if you're presented
with a pack, but without careful precision, you'll fly. Keep calm, and don't
slip up. (Ha ha ha...)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Mushrooms - Red, White spots, Mushroom.
-------------------
Effects - Gives the player which uses it a temporary boost of speed. This helps
even the slowest player sprint faster than an average fast player, but I
recommend you use it with a fast player to gain godly speed.

Rareity - Less likely when you're ahead, Rare when you're tied, Common when
you're REALLY behind.

Numbers given - 1

Best time to use it - When you're being chased by the opposition, when you have
a Hammer Bros with a ball - Sprint into space and unleash the Skill Shot! - and
when you have a Boo/Toad/DB with a charged ball. Deke right past that
goalkeeper, unopposed!

Deployed - Not really deployed, as much. Just activated...

Best used - It depends on your situation. Defensively, to get away from your
opposition, and Offensively to open up that scoring chance.

Counter-Plan - Play a defensive game. Play as someone fast and keep them near
the goal at all times to stop them from coming in and scoring with a deke. Come
out and take your opponent out if you see him charging.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Homing Shells (Red) - Red Shells.
-------------------------------
Effects - When deployed, it travels from your front and chases the nearest
player(s). This could be bad if the nearest player happens to be on your team,
so deploy sensibly and with caution.
A large lone shell, after hitting the nearest player, will continue on in
straight lines, knocking out any player it comes into, rebounding off the sides
of the pitch until it breaks, or goes into a goal (Where it breaks
automatically. We don't want a shell blocking a your goal now, do we?), where a
small shell will break upon contact with the electric fence/a player, making
them trip up.

It's worth noting here that the smaller shells travel faster than a large
shells, turn more sharply, and circle down below for any poor sucker who thinks
they can jump and avoid that tiny red shell of doom.

Rareity - Less likely when you're ahead, Common when you're tied, likely when
you're behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Giant), 3 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When you're charging up a megastrike/skillshot. Only use
it when your opponents get close, otherwise you may hit your own players and
therefore, use it ineffectively.

Deployed - From the front of your character. Don't face that fence!

Best used - Defensively, to keep your opposition at bay. Use it offensively
when that opponent is out of reach, though.

Counter-Plan - Force him into the middle of your area and try to keep your
players close to him. When you get hit with one, don't try and swap players;
instead, let your player get back up. Then you can continue that charge for the
ball (That is if he hasn't got another weapon.)!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Normal Shells (Green) - Green Shells.
----------------------------------
Effects - When deployed, it's aimed directly at your opponent, although it just
travels in stright lines.
A large lone shell will move in straight lines, knocking out any player
it comes into, rebounding off the sides of the pitch until it breaks,
or goes into a goal (Where it breaks!), where a small shell will
break upon contact with the electric fence/a player, making them trip up.
Similar effect to the homing shells.

Rareity - Likely when you're ahead, Common when you're tied, Less likely when
you're behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Giant), 3 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When you're charging up a megastrike/skillshot, close
range, so it's guarenteed to hit the opponent.

Deployed - From your character, in which ever direction your nearest
opponent is.

Best used - Defensively, to defend yourself against oncomers. Try not to
use it offensively, and save it up for when you're charging that
sure goal-scorer up.

Counter-Plan - Stay a fair distance away from your opponent so you
can dodge those shells if they're shot at you.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Spiny Shells (Red, Spiked) - Spiked Shells.
----------------------------------------
Effects - When deployed, it's aimed directly at your opponent,
although like the green shells, it just travels in stright lines.
A large lone shell will move in straight lines, knocking out
any player it comes into, rebounding off the sides of the pitch until
it breaks, or goes into a goal (Where it... Oh, you know.), where a small
shell will break upon contact with the electric fence/a player, making them
trip up. Similar effect to the
green shells.

The difference between these shells and the Green Shells is that this is
more tougher in that it bounces off the sides/goalkeeper more times
than a green shell. As such, this shell stays in play much longer,
causing more chaos; Probably the reason why this shell is more rarer
than the other shells.

Rareity - Less likely when you're ahead, Less likely when you're tied, Likely
when you're behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Giant), 3 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When you're charging up a megastrike/skillshot, close
range, so it's guarenteed to hit the opponent.

Deployed - From your character, in which ever direction your nearest opponent
is, like your Green Shells.

Best used - Defensively, to defend yourself against oncomers. Try not to use it
offensively, and save it up for when you're charging that sure goal-scorer up.
If you need to kill time and you have a Giant 1, release it. It'll cause chaos
and upset the game's momentum, killing time.

Counter-Plan - Again, stay a fair distance away from your opponent so you can
dodge those shells if they're shot at you.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Freezing Shells (Blue) - Recommended by StressBot (You Know... Me?!) - Blue Shells.
---------------------------------
Effects - When deployed, it's aimed directly at your opponent, and when it
comes into contact with a player, it freezes them, rendering them useless until
they thaw. A great defensive weapon. But be careful; a simple rebound could
freeze you, too. You have to be careful with these items.

A large lone shell will move in straight lines rebounding off the sides of the
pitch until it breaks, or goes into a goal (And breaks, for those of you half
asleep out there), where a small shell will break upon contact with the
electric fence/a player, where they make like Polar bears and freeze.
Similar effect to the green shells.

These shells are in my opinion, the best when it comes to defensive weapons,
and thats including the stars. This is because this really does stop all
chances of any player close to you from stopping you from doing what you want.
Anything else hits them back, trips them up, but BAM, they'll be back in action
before you know it. With freezing shells, you opponent'll have to swap to
another, distant player, while you laugh and score that goal which'll pull you
into the winning side of the game.
'Nuff said.

Rareity - Less likely when you're ahead, likely when you're tied, Quite
likely when you're behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Giant), 3 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When you're charging up a megastrike/skillshot, close
range, so it's guarenteed to hit the opponent.

Deployed - From your character, striaght to that nearest Opponent. Stop!
Scoring time.

Best used - Defensively, to defend yourself against oncomers. Try not to use it
offensively, and save it up for when you're charging that sure goal-scorer up.
This again causes chaos and upsets the game's momentum, killing time, if it's a
giant one which can rebound.

Counter-Plan - Again, stay a fair distance away from your opponent so you can
dodge those shells if they're shot at you. Staying too close could be fatal.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Bombs - Bomb-ombs from the Mushroom Kingdom.
------------
Effects - Explosions! The larger, lone bomb has a larger explosion radius and
near to no fuse; Great for breaking up a large group. A pack will drop from the
sky and hit the ground and explode a second after; A smaller explosion radius
and a fuse. However, with more bombs, all of them landing right next to the
ball, this can sometimes be better when it comes to taking on a lone player.

Rareity - Less likely when you're ahead, Less likely when you're tied, Quite
likely when you're behind.

Numbers given - 1 (Giant), 3 (Smaller), 5 (Smaller)

Best time to use it - When that opponent has the ball and he's gonna shoot, but
you just can't get it back.

Deployed - It's falls from the heavens and explodes immediately, or after a
second or two, depending. The larger one explodes immediately, while the
smaller packs have fuses. Keep note of this. All sets land right next to the
opponent.

Best used - Offensively, just to stop the opponent from scoring. Make sure you
have a man to immediately get the ball back in the aftermath of the explosion,
but keep him out until then, or he'll be caught in the BOOM.

Counter-Plan - If you hear that bomb falling, pass IMMEDIATELY, or take a quick
shot.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Chain Chomps - Big, Round Monsters with pointed teeth and a chain.
-----------------------
Effects - He was bound to be in MSC:F, wasn't he? This mad creature chases your
opponents and knocks them out of the way, leaving them to pick themselves up.
This madman chases the nearest opponent and nothing stops him; But get away
should he come in your direction, whether he be friend of foe. Chain Chomps are
really double edged swords, which could tear your opponent apart, or leave them
with tons of space to score with.

Rareity - Unseen when you're ahead, Rare when you're tied, Unlikely when
you're behind.

Numbers given - 1

Best time to use it - When that opponent has the ball and he's gonna shoot;
Deploy it early, though.

Deployed - It's falls from the heavens and takes out the opponent with the
ball. However, if you have the ball, he'll just fall on the opposing captain.

Best used - Offensively, just to stop the opponent from scoring. If you have a
open area, shoot.

Counter-Plan - If one's falling from the sky right above you and you have the
ball, pass. Once the Chain Chomp gets on the ground, get it to a fast player
and run around it in small-ish triangles, or pass it to one of your players in
an opening and shoot.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stars - ...What do you expect?!
---------
Effects - This gives you temporary invinsibility and a boost in speed (Mushroom
effects) while it's activated.
At any one time, you can only have one star in your inventory. However, you may
earn another Star while you have one in use.

Rareity - Unseen when you're ahead, Unseen when you're tied, Unlikely when
you're just behind, Likely when you're REALLY behind.

Numbers given - 1

Best time to use it - When a Hammer Bros. has the ball, and he's in the
opponent's half. Shiny Invinsibility, ACTIVATE! Skillshot... SCORE!

Deployed - Like the mushroom, this one just activates. This one has no on-pitch
appearence.

Best used - Defensively, so you secure yourself a scoring chance.

Counter-Plan - Keep a fair distance away from him until he start to charge.
Trust me, most people will try to score with invinsibility. As soon as it's
about to wear off (With experience, you'll know when it's just about to end -
Around half a second until it ends) body hit him. You'll hit him just as the
star wears off... That is, if he hasn't taken a shot already.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Captain Ability - This one will take on the appearence of your captain.
-----------------------
Effects - It all depends on the Captain. You can check other FAQs and guides
for specifics, but here's the general picture;
--------------
Mario & Luigi - Super Mario/Luigi. Makes you large, and you can crush smaller
players. This includes your own, though!

Yoshi - Egg Roll - Yoshi turns into a giant egg which can crush the other
players. The egg breaks when it comes into contact with a goalie, when enough
time has elapsed, or when you perform a move which requires you to be humanoid
(Passing, Shooting, Using Items).

Peach - Freeze Frame - Takes a series of photos in a radius around Peach,
freezing them.

Diddy Kong (Unlockable) - Red Card - A tractor beam abducts all players who
walk into it (Apart from Diddy and goalies).

Waluigi - Wall-uigi! - Creates a wall behind Waluigi which only Super
Mario/Luigi / Bowser's Fire Storm can pass through. Allows for megastrikes if
performed correcly. Gives Waluigi a speed boost when being used.

Daisy - Crystal Smash - Daisy is surronded by sharp rocks which shoot out of
the ground and knocks out the surronding players caught in the move's radius.
Many pros use this for instant goals =D

DK - Thunder Slam - DK smashes the floor and lets loose a large explosion
radius of energy, knocking ANYONE caught in it back. This includes the goalies!
Bowser

Bowser - Fire Storm - Bowser breathes out fire and anyone caught in it becomes
alight and a loss of control is sustained. Any goalies caught in this lose the
ability to hold onto the ball and must, therefore, deflect it in order to make
saves (Making it easier to score).

Petey (Unlockable) - Mud Slinger - Petey Spits out mud which knocks anyone
caught in the blast back (Bar goalkeepers). The mud slows everyone (Apart from
Petey) down.

Wario - Gas Mask - Wario farts and leaves a gas cloud behind him which muddles
controls up for anyone who walks into it. Great way to set up megastrikes, as
Wario is uneffected (And therefore, and walk straight into the cloud for
protection).

Bowser Jr. - Sonic Roar - Bowser Jr. screams and in front of him, everyone
caught in the blast (Again, Bar goalkeepers) is knocked back and shrinks,
lowering every stat.
--------------

Rareity - Rare when you're ahead, Likely when you're tied, Common when you're
just behind, Really Likely when you're REALLY behind.

Numbers given - 1

Best time to use it - When your captain has the ball.

Deployed - Depends on the Captain Ability, and it's effect.

Best used - Often both, being honest. However the following captains are more
effetive when it comes to Defensive:
Peach - Diddy Kong - Waluigi - Bowser - Petey - Wario

Likewise, the Offensive Captains are:
Mario - Luigi - Yoshi - Daisy - DK - Bowser Jr.

Counter-Plan - Most of the time, it's timing your body-hit, or moving around to
avoid that Ability. In cases where the opposing captain has a guage, it's often
useful to use an item instead, if you have one spare.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------
--- 4 - The Item Cheats --- [CHEA]
-------------------------------------------------

Item cheats, when activated, enhance normal matches by altering the rules so
you recieve only a certain type of item (Or in one case, not at all).
For those of you thinking you'll need any type of unofficial software that
could brick your Wii here, stop worrying! The cheats are ingame and can be
turned on or off when you set up a Domination Match offline, or a Friendly
online, by pressing ( + ) when you're setting up the Difficulty, Series Length
and Match Conditions.

There are three categories; Environment Cheats, Power Up Cheats (Item Cheats)
and Player Cheats. In each category, you can only have 1 cheat in play.

The Item Cheats are earned through completeing challenges in the Striker
Challenges mode. The following lists these cheats, which challenge you need to
complete to unlock them, and how they affect items brought into gameplay. All
challenges are available from the get-go, but some are more difficult than
others (Outlined by the difficulty name in the bottom right of the Challenge's
start button).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Super Captain
---------
Effects - Every item recieved is a Captain Ability, although note you can only
hold one at a time, and you can't earn another one until the ability has been
completely finished - Meaning you'll have to empty guages, wait to shrink back
to normal size in the case of Super Mario/Luigi, etc. - All depending on your
Captain's Ability and how it works.

Challenge to beat: DK - This Monkey Shines!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
No Power Ups
---------
Effects - Items are removed from gameplay. Go mad with tackles and body hits!

Challenge to beat: Wario - A stunning situation!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Custom Power Ups
---------
This is a pack of cheats, as opposed to a singular one. In the pack, you'll be
given several cheats which dish out either one type of item, or a certain group
of items.

Challenge to beat: Diddy Kong - Lucky Seven

Here are all the cheats unlocked by beating Diddy Kong's Challenge:

Explosives
---------
Effects - Every item on the pitch could explode.
Take note that this does not mean every item is a Bom-omb set. Items dished out
in this cheat are Large Shells that explode when they are supposed to break;
You sometimes see this in normal matches.

Freezing
---------
Effects - Only freezing shells are given here. This makes for a hetic match
which can cough up alot of goals.

Shells
---------
Effects - Only shells are given out - Freezing, Green, Homing and Spiked, all
in their regular packs. This match will become very chaotic if the teams in it
are foul-happy.

Giant
---------
Effects - No, it doesn't mean every gets Super Mario/Luigi for items. It means
that you can only get the items which are large in single packs. Single Banana
skins, Shells and Bombs only.

Accelerator
---------
Effects - Items are only Mushrooms and Stars, which speed you up. Makes for
alot of deke goals.

Peelin' Out
---------
Effects - Purely Mushrooms and Bananas here. Mushrooms and Bananas mean you'll
be able to ditch someone speeding after you with a mushroom with a simple pack
of skins. Awesome.

Seekin' Out
---------
Effects - All homing items. These include the Homing shells, Chain Chomps and
Bombs.

Bombs Away
---------
Effects - Watch out for that falling bomb! Only bombs come in this cheat, in
their packs of 1 Large, 3 Small and 5 Small.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------
--- 5 - FAQs --- [FAQS]
-------------------------------------------------

Q: Your suggestions of how to use items suck.
A: Really more of a statement than a question, but thank you anyway...

Q: Your Guide's useless.
A: ...It's my first one... *Sob*

Q: Couldn't you give ratings for the items in Section 3?
A: *Sniff...* Thank you for the first question. I suppose I would, but then I'd
be putting too much of my opinion into the guide, and that would pretty much
say it as if I wanted to state is as fact.

The reason why i've left ratings out is because every item is useful in certain
situations, and that has to be acknoledged to become a better player. If you
were to waste an item in hope for recieving a better one because of ratings in
this guide... Well, I wouldn't be doing my job as writer of this Guide.

Q: I've got a Question for you which isn't answered by this guide. What should
I do?
A: Go to Section 6 and contact me through my Contact Details. [ENND]
Hopefully, i'll be able to put it in the Guide soon.

Q: I've spotted a grammar mistake/spelling mistake/factual innacuracy. What
should I do?
A: Please contact me. Again, go to Section 6 for Contact Details. [ENND]
I'll correct it in the next version of this Guide.

Q: I've got a tip for a better way to use items. May I suggest it?
A: Of course! I direct you to Section 6. [ENND]

Q: Do Items affect goalkeepers?
A: Some do - But only slightly (Like a minor headache which lasts for half a
second). Some use this to score instant goals by knocking the ball into the
goal with an item. However, most items, thankfully, do not affect the goalkeeper.

So I hope my guide has helped you develop a better understanding about items,
and how effective they are. Not bad for my first guide, In my opinion. ^.^
