  • In this game, the overworld maps are physically stacked atop each other: World 2 is above World 1, World 3 above World 2, and so on. This is shown by using a glitch in the Bowser World of the game with a pipe near the edge of the level; you can glitch through the pipe and fall onto the worlds below.

Connection to Other Media

  • In Toad Houses, you will see the message "Pick a box. Its contents will help you on your way." This is the exact same message given in the NES title Super Mario Bros. 3 when you enter Toad Houses.

  • The first level of the Star World allows you to light up two torches with Fire Mario's fireballs. In doing so, you can access a new area where you need to light up some blocks - these will form the 8-bit sprite of Link from the NES title The Legend of Zelda. Furthermore, once all of the blocks are lit-up, the "item received" jingle from that title will play, followed by a remix of the game's overworld theme.

  • In the fifth level of Star World, Super Block Land, the theme from the 3DS title Super Mario 3D Land plays, remixed, in the background. Much of the level design was also inspired by that title, featuring similar graphics and simple geometry (as compared to the rest of this game).
