A good game... but why is the pinball a PUCK?

Another VirtualBoy game that is actually not that bad, but was just on a system that never took off. It's your basic pinball game, with a space theme. You've got four different games to choose from, Cosmic, Colony, Alien, and UFO, all with their own little ways of racking up the points. The one thing I haven't figured out is why there's a hockey puck instead of a pinball. But oh well. I guess it doesn't really matter.

Graphics - 8 out of 10. You'll forget you're just looking at red and black. The VB does what it does best by making you feel like you could reach into the screen and touch the board. The background's got several levels of stars to add a great feeling of depth, and all the levels are done pretty well. However, there's nothing spectacular enough to make a better score thanan eight necesarry.

Sound - 8 out of 10. The songs are decent, but you don't get bored with only four songs because the game spices it up with good sound effects, short songs for getting a certain mini-game or getting the puck into a certain area. Not really anything mind-altering, but for a VB pinball game, it's quite good.

Story - I'm not even going to bother.

Control/Gameplay - 9 out of 10. The best thing about the game. It's PINBALL! The only controls you have to deal with (outside of the occasional mini-game) are shooting the puck, flipping the two (or three or four) flippers, and tilting if you feel the need. If you do get a mini-game, the controls are explained for you right there. The game is straightforward, knock the puck around and try to rack up a high score. The levels have enough variety to keep it interesting for a reasonable amount of time.

Replay Value - 6 out of 10. A high scores list, and it's not one of those stupid ones that doesn't save past turning off the game. For example, I still haven't topped a score my friend got over three years ago. While going up against your old scores is a nice little goal, once you've topped all four, the replay value goes down. Still, it's fun enough that you'll want to give it a whirl now and then.

Overall Score: 7 out of 10. A solid pinball game, but nothing to put it over the top or make it truly special, as is the case with a lot of games. Still, if you've got a VirtualBoy, this a game you should pick up if you see it around. If you don't mind a puck in the place of a pinball.

Rating:   3.5 - Good
