Lead characters are very important in a video game however one of the most interesting idea of a character for any video game are babies. Depending on the characters presented as the lead character, it represents the character of the game and its world where it's set in. However many characters are extremely different for others compared to other games which may help set each game found on the market. On an interesting note, the market we have, we have games where players can play as babies or young toddlers however there's a really niche collection of titles where players can play as a baby. As I turn out, over the years of game releases, there aren't many games which allow you to play as babies to the point where it's almost become rare in itself, however there's enough of them to make a list of games which feature babies as playable characters. Some entries have more then one game featured to represent how successful their series has become and sometimes depending on how many games they have, affect their place on this list.

This article is an revised version of the article which I've typed and placed from last year. After feedback, I am greatful that many users have let me know about other titles which has allowed me to add more games where players could play as a human baby, because it means that I can iron this list to make the entries that are more related to a human baby form compared to video games which aren't human baby, such as Baby Pac-Man and Baby Felix the Cat. Those could be saved for another time.

Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa is a platform game from Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Translated into Bio Miracle - I'm Upa. The game was only released in Japan in 1988 however it later gained an worldwide release in 2008 for the Virtual Console. Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa has the player taking control of a baby named Upa who accidentally breaks an urn containing an evil demon spirit who kidnaps the other babies in the games kingdom expect for Upa. Upa sets out to rescue them. Despite the games adventurous story, the game is set in a very imaginative yet generic world featuring every objects, such as a level filled with sugary snacks, a world full of stationary and another set in computer hardware with microchips and circuit boards as Upa is such smaller compared to the objects appearing in those levels. The enemies also have funny behavior patterns when they are attacked by Upa's rattle, where they inflate and float which is helpful for Upa as they can be used as platforms to reach higher locations in the levels and can explode which may harm Upa and the enemies in the game. Upa has appeared in many other Konami games, many of those games, has never left the land of Japan to reach the shores of North America

Graphical side scrolling game about prehstiroc baby who carries a cub. Created by Hudson Soft and published by atlus in the 1990. Bonk adventure out into the open and explores caves and jumps on hazardous creatures like many of the characters at the time would. It's a rather generic game. At the time, the world was interested in archology and history, so it may be the case for the development team to make something interesting for a video game, by combaining prestrotic age theme with a man as a main character which would resulted in Bonk's adventure. Bonk was released on the TurboFC and enjoyed it's success in Japan, which would later spawn itself in a trilogy of games but only for the TurboFX and later a series of other games across other platforms in the year. The games however would later be released for the PlayStation Network.

This is maybe the the most curliest video game based on babes to be ever made. You don't believe me? You should see what some of the other folks across the internet are saying about this game and how many people who've played this game are posting up because of the amount of controversial themes this game to do with babies was clearly made to attract attention during the games release.

First released in the arcades in 2000 under the name Come On Baby, the game was later ported onto the PS2 under the simple 2000 in 2006 as The Aka-Champion. This game hosted a bunch of competitive events for babies, where babies compete in brutal events such as beating each other to win. Players can select from a choose of babies. Rivalry is one thing but the game throws in extremely dangerous elements such as babies beating each other with rowing sticks, slapping each other and trying to push each other against electrified rope. Other mini-games include taking part in extremely fast downhill to perform long distance ski jumps in ice cold condition when these babies only were a t-shirt. Rolling snow up the hill and trying to run away from a polar bear while trying to outrun their rivals. The game developers didn't shy from having the babies expose themselves and peeing as a form of celebration after winning. I do praise this game for doing something else and it may not be for everyone. The game is very hard to find even on shopping websites and may command high prices too get.

A good example of a baby as a central character of a platform game. Baby Jo was released on the PC and Atari PCs in 1991. Baby Jo finds himself lost in the country and has to journey across the level to get himself home all by himself. Starting in some grasslands with flowers and trees, Baby Jo has to avoid earthworms, birds and other hazards to avoid getting upset and sitting down crying and giving up. Baby Jo eventfully finds himself in some muddy like caves and eventfully into the city to get himself home avoiding more obstacles along the way like dogs and paper airplanes. Baby Jo can also jump and sit on clouds.

The game has an interesting form of gameplay. Baby Jo can collect rattles which he can throw during the game. Baby Jo also needs to refill himself up with milk and he also soils his diapers during the game which often need to be changed to continue playing the game, thus making the game much more challenging. A duck also follows Baby Jo around to give the player feedback on their progress. The game is may be generic however it's one of the earliest attempt to place a baby in a video game.

Captain Commando is one of the early Capcom arcade games which was popular in the arcades. Captain Commando is a beat'em up where players can take control of the in game heroes. Being an arcade game, what better way to attract attention in the arcades then to have players take control of a baby controlling a robotic suit?

Players in the game can select one out of four fighters to stop a gang of super-power criminals in the year 2026. Captain Commando is the leader of the group with Mummified Commando, NInja Commando and Baby Head. Baby Head is a baby genius who controls a robot suit. The character design was clearly meant to attract attention at the arcade before being ported onto home consoles in the early 90s. Years after and comparing it to other video games out there, Baby Head's character design has aged for good reason and still stands out in the game, which helps the games stand well.

Messiah is a PC game released in 2000 developed by Shiny Entertainment and released by Interplay. Players play as Bob, the Putto. What's a Putto? A putto is a chubby male child with wings. In the game Bob is sent from god to earth in the not so distant future to clean up the corruption on Earth. The game renders the lead character in a form of a chubby baby who wears a diaper and had wings to fly around through out the game. There are moments in the game where it feels like a child is affecting the adults characters in the game which helps communicate the contrast in the game extremely well, such as the security shooting with their rifles at Bob at times as he flies around trying to possess bodies which makes of the gameplay, however the game does a good job presenting Bob in this Putto form and the other forms he can possess. The game is filled with a cyberpunk, gritty atmosphere filled with violence in a factory like setting. The games soundtrack is blasted by heavy metal by the band Fear Factory to set the mood in the game, which is the least lately place to have a baby run around in. Bob the Putto has some narration in the game and they've made him sounds like a baby with well spoken dialogue. The game ends in a cliffhanger which encourages the players to have a sequel of the game, which never happened as the game wasn't a commercial success.

Baby Mario's first appearance was in Yoshi's Island, however players never really got to play as Baby Mario, however due to Mario being a baby popularity, Nintendo has considered it and started to place him as a playable character in video games. Baby Mario first appeared as a playable character in Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64. He later made more appearances in Mario Tennis, Mario Kart: Double Dash and loads more. In Mario Kart: Double Dash, players can select these character along with a motorization cot to be taken onto the race track along with Baby Luigi, where Baby Luigi makes his first appearance. Baby Mario as a character has became extremely favorable with the community since his appearance, adding to the growing variety of games from Nintendo. Now Sega should put Baby Sonic in a video game and have their little rivalry begin again seeing that Sonic has never appeared in such in video game form. (I'm a big Sonic fan btw folks)

An old game for the C64 and ZX Spectrum. Jack the Nipper is a British made game where you take control of a baby Sweeny Toddler. The aim of the game is to be as naughty as possible in the game world. The title is a clear play of words on Jack the Ripper, a known murderer who was made infamous during the Victorian era where his crimes are unsolved to this day. The baby in this game is trying to be as bad as it can possibly can which the player takes control. Jack climbs onto shelves, causes jars to fall and makes a mess. However if Sweeny gets caught, he gets spanked which causes him to get nappy rash. If his nappy rash gets too high, he gets fed up and loses a life. At the time, the graphics was known to be decent and even today, the graphic has aged well. While games of that era were rendered in 2D, the game is presented allowing the characters to move in and out, as well as moving left to right to make the game feel 3D. The success of the game spawned a sequel, Jack the Nipper II: In Coconut Capers.

Among the Sleep was released in 2014 for the PC, 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and 2016 for the Xbox One. Among the Sleep is impressive with it's cinematic presentation were the game is set in it's first person view, showing the perspective of the toddler as the game tells its story. The game starts with the player having a party and being handed a gift however events unfold which leds the player in the game. The player has to navigate the world where a monster follows and tries to hurt the player. Many players believe that the monster is the mother of the child who is drunk and tries to hurt the baby. The toddler has a teddy bear which comes alive to help the player walk in the world. On an interesting note, Among the Sleep has you playing as a toddler and not a baby unlike the other entries on this list but I'm considering it because it's close to the idea that the character is a baby.

The Rugrats was Klasky Csupo's biggest series ever produced out of all their cartoons series the studio has ever made and it's no surprise that the Rugrats have spawned alot of video games from their success. They have many games based on the Rugrats. In many of the Rugrats, you are taking control of the lead character, Tommy or his friends, Chuckle, Phil and Lil and sometimes his younger brother Dil and many of the other characters from the cartoon. The introduction of characters over the years in the cartoon series has allowed the game developers too add them into later games such as Dil in The Rugrats Movie game and Kimi in the Rugrats in Paris movie who later became featured in the game. Most of the games feel like episodes themselves making them unique on their own which doesn't rely so much on the cartoons are reference materials.

The fact they've flooded the market with loads of video games based of the popular 90s kids TV show, makes you wonder people like the games in the first place and why it makes for an interesting idea of a video game. Sometimes I think parents could purchase a Rugrats game for their kids to play to allow them learn about how to take care of their younger brother or sister. There would be loads of reasons for people to purchase the Rugrats which not many people know about but the fact that Klasky Csupo created one of the biggest cartoons of the 90s which helped them make loads of games, makes you wonder how far they've got with the cartoons and maybe they were sick of it because of the Rugrats, All Grown Up follow up along with the video games being made for that series.

Worthy Mentions

Virtual Bart - Virtual Bart is a Simpsons game released for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo in 1994, when the Simpsons started to appear in video games. In Virtual Bart, Bart visits a fair and enters a Virtual reality simulator however he cannot escape the pod until he completes all the games that Bart gets immerse in. Some of the levels feature Bart in this normal form however some levels have Bart transform into a pig or a dinosaur. One of the levels just happens to be that players can play as Bart as a Baby in diapers. Bart escapes from the cot of his home and journey across the fields and a circus to try and get a something that many baby wants, which is later found towards the end when the player competes the level.

Herbert's Dummy Run - Game released on the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. A generic game where the lead character is a baby named Herbert. Herbert walks like an old bloke, maybe because Herbert's Dummy Run is part of a video game series at the time titled Wally Week, where the first game is about a working man who has to walk around the house, to find keys to rewind his alarm clock. Herbert has to avoid simple everyday objects which can hurt any baby such as flying tennis balls, hoovers and all sorts of other objects. The game looks good. The game is fairly generic and not as adventurous compared to many other games on this list but the graphics at the time does look good by using the black screen as a backdrop compared with the colorful objects rendered in the game, which work well against it.

The Fallout 3 exploit where you could play the entire game as a baby - Fallout 3 allows you to play the entire game as a baby. While the game allows anyone to play as an adult, players have discovered that they could allow the character in its infant form to explore the entire game. This could of been on the list but the entry is more of an exploit then an official one but you'll never think a baby would wander around a fallout universe, but it would make sense for them to have fun collecting bottle-caps for the fun of it. Many thanks to those who've let me know about this.

Baby Boomer - The character doesn't really play as a baby in this Nintendo Entertainment System game. The player has to use the Nintendo Light gun to shoot hazards to protect the Baby Boomer as he walks across the terrain.

Isaac in the Binding of Issac - Questionable in my opinion. While the title character Isaac along with other ingame characters, looks small and shaped well enough as a baby, there's not much information to confirm if it's the lead character Issac is a baby or not. While concepts art of Isaac labelled him as 'cry baby' stacked upon the idea his name in Hebrew which means "laughter" which is considered ironic as in the game, Isaac is always seen crying. The game itself has many more characteristics used as references which hint that Isaac could be a baby or just a presentation trick to allow the player to think that Isaac is not a baby but something else in the game which is interesting but then maybe it's one of the reasons to why the game is great to take notice off.

BabyZ - Possibly the first life simulator featuring Babies for players to interact with exclusively. Babyz was released in 1999, was a spin off from the popular late 90s PC game, Petz where instead of taking care of pets, players can take care of babies. While the topic on the list is about controlling babies. In the game, you playing as a babysitter or carer who interacts with babies.you end up trying to coach and teach how to talk and eventfully mix them together with other infants in the day care center. BabyZ was also popular in the modding community as the players couldn't customize the ingame babies at the time.

Think that playing as a baby is niche enough of an idea in video games? You should be aware about the amount of games offer where you have to defeat babies or characters in baby form as bosses. A boss in Persona 4 clearly comes into mind to Baby Browser in Yoshi's Island for example as players has to defeat babies as bosses, so it's not so much about giving the lead to baby like characters, as babies are sometimes a big part in a video game industry.
