It can be said that it is a part of human nature to try to cheat. Cheating has been apparent since ancient Greece. In 409 BC Sophocles writes, “I would prefer even to fail with honor than win by cheating.” In 17th century AD China, cheating shirts were sewn into a test taker’s undergarments for use during the highly competitive civil service examinations. Everyone is familiar with Cliffs Notes dating back to 1958. Video games are no exception. It is no surprise that some games and the companies behind them have attracted publicity, whether it is positive or otherwise, for the cheats built in. Unlockables, Easter Eggs, glitches, whatever they are called, it almost seems mandatory now and days to implement cheats of one form or another. The following is a list of the top 10 most memorable cheats that will hopefully forever be remembered in video game history.

Now you can defeat Yellow Devil with minimal effort. Fortunately, Capcom kept the trick in the Megaman Anniversary Collection games for the Gamecube and Playstation 2.

This isn’t an actual cheat anymore. Apparently, adult gamers who have grown to love Lara Croft a little too much envisioned her naked hence the pseudo cheat for Nude Raider. Taking the guise of Eidos, someone released a downloadable patch that would cause Lara to appear naked in the game. Core Design did take legal actions against fan sites posting naked pictures of Lara Croft saying that they didn’t want innocent fans doing web searches to return with this pornographic content. The domain was shut down. The real cheats for the game are level select and unlocking all weapons.

Making headlines again was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas being pulled off US shelves in the summer of 2005 due to a “Hot Coffee Mod.” Cheats have grown more sophisticated over the years. The downloadable patch allowed players to enter girlfriends’ homes and engage in a sex mini-game.

Do you like math? Get out your calculator because the in game cheats for this classic Mario title require certain conditions involving numbers to be met. During gameplay, you can press the Enter key to bring up the message/chat command. After typing certain phrases and pressing Enter again, you unlock bonuses that give your side more than a fighting edge in battle. For example, “Glittering Prizes” blesses you with ample resources of gold, wood, and oil for ships. “Make It So” speeds up building construction time. “Unite the Clans” gives you instant victory. Finally, typing “UCLA” displays a message from Blizzard about their favorite sports team (“Go Bruins”). Another fun tidbit to do is click on a unit multiple times and listen to the amusing dialogue. Both tricks are carried over to Blizzard’s subsequent games Warcraft 3 and Starcraft.

A fighting game known for its combos, Killer Instinct has the ultimate boss select code. From Riptor hold Left and press 1, 2, 4 until the versus screen pops up, and then hold Right and press 2, 3, and 6. Cheats add a whole new element to gameplay. You can modify a player’s abilities – give them an enlarged head, boost their character stats, and make them jump higher and farther. It adds to the replay value of a game. However, it can be seen as a crutch if you become totally reliant on them and can’t complete the game otherwise. It takes much more skill and dexterity to play the games as they were originally designed. That is unless of course you challenge yourself by weakening your character (ie. reduce the number of lives) with cheats.
