#9: Mega Man (NES)
Against bosses, using the Elec Beam press the Select button while the weapon is making contact with the enemy. This will cause the game to pause. After the enemy has stopped flashing, pressing Select again then repeating the process will deplete the boss’s life bar to the point where there is none left. Now you can defeat Yellow Devil with minimal effort. Fortunately, Capcom kept the trick in the Megaman Anniversary Collection games for the Gamecube and Playstation 2.
#8: Tomb Raider (PC)
This isn’t an actual cheat anymore. Apparently, adult gamers who have grown to love Lara Croft a little too much envisioned her naked hence the pseudo cheat for Nude Raider. Taking the guise of Eidos, someone released a downloadable patch that would cause Lara to appear naked in the game. Core Design did take legal actions against fan sites posting naked pictures of Lara Croft saying that they didn’t want innocent fans doing web searches to return with this pornographic content. The domain nuderaider.com was shut down. The real cheats for the game are level select and unlocking all weapons.
Making headlines again was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas being pulled off US shelves in the summer of 2005 due to a “Hot Coffee Mod.” Cheats have grown more sophisticated over the years. The downloadable patch allowed players to enter girlfriends’ homes and engage in a sex mini-game.
Do you like math? Get out your calculator because the in game cheats for this classic Mario title require certain conditions involving numbers to be met. To get the white treasure ship you must: 1) have a total number of coins collected that is a multiple of 11, 2) have the tens digit in your score match that multiple of 11, and 3) finish the stage on an even number.
Complicated codes done within the game options. Play the following songs in Sound Select in order to unlock level select: 19, 65, 09, and 17. Playing 04, 01, 02, and 06 in Sound Test unlocks the yellow Super Sonic without having to collect all seven Chaos Emeralds. Playing 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, and 04 in Sound Test unlocks debug mode. Debug is cool in that you can transform and set the various scenery, enemies, and rings across the screen. Combine placing 50 rings on the ground and instant Super Sonic.
During gameplay, you can press the Enter key to bring up the message/chat command. After typing certain phrases and pressing Enter again, you unlock bonuses that give your side more than a fighting edge in battle. For example, “Glittering Prizes” blesses you with ample resources of gold, wood, and oil for ships. “Make It So” speeds up building construction time. “Unite the Clans” gives you instant victory. Finally, typing “UCLA” displays a message from Blizzard about their favorite sports team (“Go Bruins”). Another fun tidbit to do is click on a unit multiple times and listen to the amusing dialogue. Both tricks are carried over to Blizzard’s subsequent games Warcraft 3 and Starcraft.
A fighting game known for its combos, Killer Instinct has the ultimate boss select code. From Riptor hold Left and press 1, 2, 4 until the versus screen pops up, and then hold Right and press 2, 3, and 6. This enables you to play as the bad boy Eyedol, a monstrous two-headed, hoofed creature wielding a club. At the stomp of his foot, he can fire multiple fireballs. He can sky rocket your opponent into the air with ease. He also has an infinite dash combo.
#2: Doom II (PC)
One of the founding fathers of the first person shooter genre, you can make our hero a god by typing IDDQD with the keyboard. IDCLIP makes him walk through walls. IDCLEV## can warp you to any level that you wish. Levels 31 and 32 are Wolfenstein secret levels where you can kill Nazi soldiers in hell. IDKFA unlocks every weapon – shotgun, plasma gun, BFG, and oh yes the chainsaw. Never leave home without it. Type IDKFA again and it’s an instant ammo refill.
#1: Contra (NES)
Engraved into the hearts and souls of every gamer is Konami’s Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, (Select) Start code. With 30 lives you and a friend can beat the aliens in one afternoon.
Cheats add a whole new element to gameplay. You can modify a player’s abilities – give them an enlarged head, boost their character stats, and make them jump higher and farther. It adds to the replay value of a game. However, it can be seen as a crutch if you become totally reliant on them and can’t complete the game otherwise. It takes much more skill and dexterity to play the games as they were originally designed. That is unless of course you challenge yourself by weakening your character (ie. reduce the number of lives) with cheats.
