Crafting
Crafting is a major function of gameplay. Crafting allows you to process raw materials into useful items and furniture.
To get started with crafting, visit the Resident Services tent and navigate to the DIY Workbench in the upper right corner of the map. Agree to take part in the upcoming workshop.
Crafting consists of three general steps:
- Gather materials
- Read and learn recipes
- Construct the item
When you initially start the crafting process, you'll first learn how to create a Fishing Rod, which requires gathering 5 tree branches. Collect these items around the island if you don't already have them, then move to the workbench and press the A Button. Select the Flimsy fishing rod, then select the Craft it! button to construct your first tool. Once you've constructed the item, Tom will give you access to the DIY Recipes application on your NookPhone. Sweet!
While you're at it, now's a great time to learn the Simple DIY workbench recipe that you have in your inventory!
Crafting Simple Tools
Now that you know how to craft items, it's time to start crafting things of use! Gather some tree branches by cleaning up the island or by shaking some trees. Use these branches to craft fishing rods, nets, and axes that can be used to gather even more materials.

Customization
After your first new resident moves to your island, you'll be able to attend the DIY Customization workshop held by Tom in Resident Services. Completing this workshop will allow you to customize compatible items and give them a unique look and feel.
Complete this workshop in the following manner:
- Speak to Tom in Resident Services about your interest in the workshop.
- Build a Wooden Wardrobe using the recipe Tom gives you.
- Speak to Tom again, informing him you have the required item.
- Use the workbench in Resident Services to customize the item to your liking by selecting one of the colors available.
Once complete, you'll now be able to customize various DIY furniture items. To do you, you'll need customization kits that can now be purchased from Timmy.
