Foreword

Banner of the Maid Unit Guide (by Harvester of Eyes)

This is an objective statistical guide for all characters in “Banner of the Maid.” My hope is that this information can help you make an informed decision on which units to use for your playthrough, as well as serve as a good resource for this wonderful game. Before we begin though, I need to include a few notes on...

What you’ll find in this guide:

  • Unit stats: I have included every unit’s base stats and their stats at 5 level increments (5, 10, 15...). I have not included stats for EVERY level, as that would be way too tiring… at any rate, the information provided here should be plenty.
  • Stat boosters: None are used, so as to create a more accurate and fair comparison.
  • Recruitment: I have listed when each character joins your army and at what level. For hidden characters, I have included additional notes on how to recruit them.
  • Personal Skills: Each unit in the game has her or his own unique skill. (The rest are dictated by class.) I have included each and every one of these unique skills in this guide.
  • Promotions: For my level 15 stat values (or 20 for some characters, who promote at 19 instead), I factored in promotion bonuses. This explains the spike in some statistical values at level 15.
  • Alternate promotions: (Pauline, Lannes, Nicolette, Oscar, Desaix) I am fairly certain that the alternate promotions do NOT grant them different level ups, but please correct me if I am wrong. For the time being, I have included stats for default promotions and notes where applicable so that you can calculate their alternate promotion stats on your own.
  • Class explanations: I’ve included a short description of each and every class in their corresponding section. This should help explain the weapon quadrilateral and each class’s range--things which raw numbers can’t accurately communicate.
  • My own opinions: None to be found here, for the sake of objectivity. I did put out a Banner of the Maid tier list video on YouTube though, so if you wanna hear my opinions, check it out here: https://youtu.be/yjOVpPd6GYw (my channel has a lot of videos on various SRPGs similar to this game too btw, just saying :p)
  • Navigating this guide: I’ve organized this document by class. You can find each unit type in this document’s outline, or if you’re looking for a specific unit, you can simply CTRL + F and type in their name. Don’t worry: I’ve eschewed the fancy letters, so if you want to find Adelaide for instance, you don’t need to type in “Adélaïde.” Simply typing “Adelaide” will suffice!

Well, that’s all. Let’s get into the meat of this guide!

Line Infantry

These foot-locked musketeers are strong against Heavy Cavalry and weak against Light Infantry. By default, they attack at 1 range, although ranged muskets exist, as well as skills to allow them to counter from further away. All line infantry except Dutheil and Julie passively buff infantry units who are adjacent to them; Dutheil and Julie can’t do this, but they instead replenish weapon durability to all allies within 2 tiles of themselves.

Pauline

Available for every battle in the game (except Prologue 1, where you control Lafayette). Joins at level 1.

Personal skill: (Command) Once per battle, Pauline can grant herself +2 Attack for 3 turns. During chapter 7, as soon as Baldur attacks your army, this is permanently upgraded to (Command) Consumes 50 morale to grant everyone in the army +3 Attack for one turn. This skill cannot be unequipped.

Pauline also uniquely has access to a passive skill which debuffs her opponent’s Attack by -3 for every ally adjacent to Pauline. No other unit can learn this. You must first complete the "Story of the Maid Part 3" sidequest to unlock this, however.

You must satisfy all of the following conditions for her to join your army. Thereafter, she will join you once you visit the the Ecole Militaire.

  1. Select "Because I want to change the future" in chapter 10.
  2. In chapter 10, Julie appears on the battlefield as NPC. Talk to her with Pauline.
  3. After chapter 22, you'll get a sidequest titled "Staff vs. Tactician." Beat it. After you finish, select "Julie's policy is good enough."

The earliest you can recruit her is right before chapter 23. Julie joins at level 18. She is rather atypical in that she promotes at level 19.

The values shown below assume Grenadier, her default promotion.

Personal Skill: If Nicolette’s level is lower than her opponent’s, she receives +4 Attack and +4 Speed during combat.

Desaix

Available as soon as chapter 4 is completed. Joins at level 2. Leaves after chapter 16. Returns midway through chapter 21 with the exact same stats/inventory/skills. (Depending on your story choices, Desaix may visually look different upon rejoining your army.) Here are the steps required to preserve Desaix’s appearance:

  1. Before chapter 7, you’ll get a sidequest featuring Desaix. Complete it and be sure to complete the optional challenge (his “Replace” skill is key for this). Doing so will give you Dr. Larrey’s Notes (1st half).
  2. Defeat every enemy in chapter 15. This will complete the optional challenge and will reward you with Dr. Larrey’s Notes (2nd half).
  3. Put BOTH of these notes in Desaix’s inventory BEFORE chapter 16 starts.
  4. During chapter 16, take no damage with Desaix.

Doing so should result in him returning unchanged during chapter 21. You will also gain an additional Desaix (with all the same stats) on your New Game +.

Personal Skill: Desaix gains +2 Attack, +2 Defense, and +2 Armor for every friendly unit adjacent to the opponent.

Light Cavalry

These mounted units are strong against Light Infantry and weak against Heavy Cavalry. This unit category actually features two classes. Murat and Charlotte are locked to swords, so they can only attack at 1 range; on the other hand, Philipp and Leclerc use rifles, so they have a few options for expanding their range. Murat

Available from the start of chapter 3. Joins at level 2.

Light Infantry

These rifle-wielding, foot-locked units are strong against Line Infantry and weak against Light Cavalry. This unit category actually features two classes. By default, D’Eon, Adelaide, and Ernestine can only attack at 1 range and are characterized by good dodge. On the other hand, Cosette, Laure, and Therese have 1-2 range by default and boast deadly accuracy. Additionally, weapons exist which can further enhance all of these units’ range. Mobility-wise, all Light Infantry have high mobility. They all have access to a skill which lets them ignore terrain. D’Eon, Adelaide, and Ernestine additionally learn a skill which allows them to move 3 tiles after initiating combat.

D'Eon

Available from the start of chapter 3. Joins at level 5.

Personal Skill: Adjacent friendly infantry units receive +1 Defense and +2 Armor during combat.

Mu Zhiyun

Available after you finish DLC mission 1. The earliest you can obtain her is before chapter 3. Joins at level 5.

She cannot promote. Instead, she is effectively a prepromote who, at base level, has access to level 3 and 4 weapons and 4 inventory slots. Additionally, she is the only unit in the game with access to two types of weapons: Sidearms and Machetes. These are basically the same things as Rifles and Shortswords, only they can't be purchased and must instead be stolen via Heroic Attacks.

Personal skill: When counterattacking, Mu Zhiyun gains +1 Attack Range and reduces damage taken by 40%. Heroic Attacks can sometimes plunder items from your enemies.
