How to Use this Guide

Unit Type: With each entry I will be describing the character in a breakdown starting with the type of character (Humanoid vs Monster). Humanoids may equip any type of weapon except monster weapons. Unlike monsters, they may not hold allies or enemies above their head. Monsters are only able to use monster weapons, may not hold anybody above their head, and may MagiChange. MagiChange is described in-game.

Unique Evility/Overload: The Evility that cannot be changed and is ultimately unique to this one and only unit in the entire game is listed here. Characters with overloads will have the overload listed as well. The line will be left blank if the character does not possess an overload. An overload can be taught to a character that does not have an overload (and can overwrite it for the ones that do) with a Strategy Assembly bill in the post-game.

Stat Block: A listing of what stats the character has at level 1, as well as their aptitudes, weapon proficiency, and elemental and weapon resistances.

Common Evilities: A listing of the evilities this character can purchase from the skill NPC in addition to the ones obtained through class mastery. These evilities are new, and cannot be obtained in the game unless you have unlocked this DLC item.

Character Evaluations: After the stat and skill blocks, an evaluation of the character will follow. This evaluation is my personal opinion on the strengths/weaknesses of the character. I feel that all of the DLC content for Disgaea 5 is worth the buy if you are a fan of the previous titles in the series. In the post-game all characters can have max stats and the variations between the characters largely becomes splitting hairs; you'll be able to kill the hardest enemy in the game with the character you designate as "worst" in the game. The evaluations are broken down with the following categories:

  • Unique Evility: Since no other character can have this evility, its one of the main reasons for opting to use a given character at any point.
  • Overload: Overloads are very important, especially since many characters do not get them, and most of the generic overloads are underwhelming. Characters with Overloads as a result will get better ratings.
  • Skills/Stats: Aptitudes, starting stats, and weapon masteries will mean very little in the post game, but for those wishing to get a little power early on in the game, this will be a key scoring area.
  • Common Evilities: All of the DLC characters introduce some common evilities, which can be transferred to other characters, to the game. Its impossible to obtain these evilities for any character unless you've bought the DLC, so it will likely be a purchase point for a lot of people.
  • Overall Score: The average of all 4 of the above ratings, with Overload counting for half of what the other categories count for.

Characters Listed by their Evaluation Score

The characters are ordered here by their numeric score which I had used as the basis for their letter grade evaluation. I've left off the free content (Prinnies) since you will not need to be persuaded to buy them or not. The generic classes are inferior to uniques because a unique can just subclass into the generic and get whatever they want out of it evility-wise, which is half the reason to select characters.

Dead Sexy2Increase Damage dealt by 30% when attacking male units
Bodyguards3Increase ATK of male units in assigned squad by 5%This stacks, so if you have 5 male characters in a squad, all with the evility, they all have an attack +25% mod when calculating damage.
Hasty Rush4At the beginning of the Stage, after the very first attack, unit can attack againThe effect description is a little misleading. It doesn't have to be the beginning of the stage, or the very first attack your team has made. Whenever this character with this evility attacks, if its their first attack for the stage, they get a second go at it.

Evaluation
Girl Laharl is a little bit unremarkable on her score card. Her aptitudes are quite underwhelming, and the starting stats are average to above average. Like her male counterpart, there are four unique specials, with the last one have a nice damage rating, but its largely identical to a sword skill you will probably have anyway. Girl Laharl is best with swords, axes and fists. Her final common evility, "Hasty Rush" is very useful when applied to many characters, as it essentially doubles the damage output of any character on their first attack of the battle. If I had to give a reason to buy Girl laharl, it would be Hasty Rush. This can be quite useful for grinding Martial Training 4, or when applied to a Sage's Land Decimator when you're farming item world. She's a solid B as a character.

Evaluation
Metallia is awesome. She is one of the best DLC characters, hands down. I highly recommend purchasing her. Her relevant magic caster stats are all extremely high, and she has ridiculously good innate resistances. If those resistances weren't enough, she's difficult to kill due to her unique evility. But wait, there's more! She has a super awesome map-wide capture skill and learns every Omega and Tera Spell way ahead of every other caster in the game. This one has to be a coding bug, honestly. Other characters learn Tera spells at 200, she learns them at 50. It looks more so like a coding bug because unlike every other character, she *skips* tiers of magic (she doesn't learn mega or giga, just jumps from level 1 spells to level 4, which is quite unusual). Her unique evilities are not a reason to buy her, but that's sort of irrelevant after all the prior reasons to get her.

Evaluation
Nisa's unique evility will get her more stats than any other single evility will, but will require a lot of idling time for your PS4, and you will likely beat the game before it eclipses the stats gained from Greedy Disposition. Aside from her unique evility and an excellent level 42 special, Nisa isn't much to write home about. She is a solid sword or gun user, but you should have plenty of those in your lineup already.

Evaluation
Plenair is optimized for guns despite coming with a book (staff) equipped. For being the reward for buying the most expensive version of Disgaea 5 (Full game + all DLC) she's a bit lackluster. Her unique evility is an enhanced version of the Sea Angel's, but you'll be able to get +100% stats from other sources quite easily so she becomes less useful the later you are into the game. Plenair is essentially a much better Sea Angel, so if you want to pass her common evilities onto a couple support characters, you'll be able to EXP/Mana farm with ease, as well as get your allies some extra movement. She has great stats for a gun user, maybe even the best.

Evaluation
Stats and aptitudes vary by class rank. Kunoichi receives a good amount of harmful status effect magic, so she's ideal if you wanted a single class to reincarnate your generics into to pick up all of the status effect magic in one go. The aggressive spying evility is very useful late game with the item world.
