Trials

Wheel of Harma

The Wheel of Harma Trials become available after you finish the events at Angri-La in Act 2. Challenging the Trials is entirely optional but they will test your skill and strategy, and there are rewards for completing them. You don't have to tackle them right away, you can wait until you are stronger. The longer you do wait, the less value the equipment rewards offer because you may acquire better gear along your journey.

To start the Trials, go to The High Hall at the top of Angri-La and exit through the doorway on the east side. The tunnel ahead leads to The Field of Discipline. Pass through the door on the north side of the circular antechamber to reach the training ground. A priest on the east side of The Field of Discipline will Save your game for you. Talk to the High Lama in the center to begin a Trial. Note that Angri-La - The Field of Discipline is added to your Zoom list so you can come here directly in the future.

Three trials are available to begin with and you must complete the First Trial before you can challenge the Second or Third Trials. Each Trial includes multiple battles and sets limits on the number of participants you can have in your party for each battle. Upon selecting a Trial, you will have to designate the participants for each battle before the Trial begins. A character can't participate in more than one battle during the Trial. After completing a Trial, the party's HP/MP are restored.

You will be rewarded for emerging victorious and there are additional rewards for claiming victory within a certain number of moves. A move is any action taken by a member of your battle party.

Because success is determined by how few moves you use to defeat the enemies, you are forced to focus on offense. You will have seen these enemies during normal play, but the version you fight here has a lot more HP. When you face more than one opponent, each enemy is a separate enemy group. To use the fewest moves, you will need to employ abilities and spells that target all enemies at once.

Each of the Trials is detailed below, including suggested participants and recommended abilities for each battle within the Trial. These are certainly not the only strategies that will work, but the strategies shown were successful at completing the Trial within the number of moves required to receive all the rewards.

THE FIRST TRIAL

The strategy shown below assumes you attempt the Trial once you have a full party after visiting Angri-La the first time. You can complete the Trial as soon as it becomes available by substituting "?" for Jade in the first battle. With "?" using Parallax it will probably take one turn more to finish the fight than with Jade, but you still should be able to complete the Trial within the minimum number of moves required to receive all the rewards.

Erik, dual-wielding boomerangs, uses Divide followed by Double Down targeting Badonis.

THE FOURTH TRIAL

The fourth and fifth Wheel of Harma Trials are not available until after you complete the main game. Carry through with the post-game events until you finish those at Havens Above. Then you can attempt new Trials at the Angri-La Field of Discipline. If you are working toward Trophy collection, there is one awarded for completing all five Wheel of Harma Trials. There also are Trophies for raising each of your characters to Level 99. You can wait until you reach Level 99 to make these Trials easier. If you want to attempt them earlier, you probably should be Level 65 for the Fourth Trial and Level 80 for the Fifth Trial.

The strategies shown below assume that you have reached Level 99, acquired some top-tier equipment and filled out your party's skill trees in Character Builder.

If you plan to use these strategies, before beginning the Fourth Trial, equip Erik and "?" with accessories to prevent Bedazzlement, like the Catholicon Rings you forged after the Disciple's Trial, or Rings of Truth from the Little Lifesavers Recipe Book.

Sylvando uses Ladies First to pass his turn to Veronica, if he goes first.
Battle #4, Bloodbath and Beyond
1 Participant
Red Giant
Strategy
Hero attacks with Sword Dance.

THE FIFTH TRIAL

This Trial is best left until the very end, after you have completed Drustan's Trials and acquired the best equipment. What makes this Trial so difficult is that If you don't defeat all the enemies quickly and at the same time, Grand Master Pang will bring in backup. The new opponents will have full health where the ones you've been attacking don't, making it even more difficult to defeat all enemies in the same round. If you are unlucky, Grand Master Pang may call for backup every round.

If you are going to try these strategies, fight a few battles to get Veronica and Serena Pepped Up before starting the Trial.

The Path to Trial Isle has the same layout as The Snærfelt. The exits that had led from the Snærfelt to The Sniflheim Region, The Hekswood and The Arborian Highlands will instead return you to another area of the Path to Trial Isle. The enemies may not change regardless of what the "clock" on your area map shows. You may need to warp out and return to affect the time of day.

To reach Trial Isle, where the Royal Library would be, you will need to find a way through ice blocks. You arrive on the lower level south of Trial Isle. Southeast of your immediate location is a sparkling plant. When you slash it, three Sparkly Spots will fall revealing an Ice Crystal, a Colourful Cocoon and a tuft of Glimmergrass. Head northwest and look for a Treasure Chest behind the log cabin. Open it to obtain a suit of Sacred Armour. You can rest in this secluded cabin to recover your HP/MP.

Make your way south, through the narrow pass, to reach the large open area. Below the southern land bridge is a Sparkly Spot on a ledge. Examine it to find a Sunny Citrine. In the northwest part of this open area is a ledge with a glowing symbol on top. Step on the glowing symbol and you will be transported to the far southern area. Walk to the northwest tip of the land bridge and shatter the cluster of blue crystals on the wall. It will drop three Sparkly Spots with a Savvy Sapphire, an Artful Amethyst and a Royal Ruby. There will be a sparkling Vicious Face Invader here. Defeat it and climb inside. Use the monster mount to charge through the ice block and return to the open area on the lower level.

Still inside the Face Invader, return through the narrow pass to the northern area. Charge through the ice block on the south wall to reach a ledge. There is a fruit tree at the east end of the ledge that will drop three Sparkly Spots with an Avabranche, a Cumulonimbough and a phial of Sparkly Sap. Another Sparkly Spot at the western tip of the ledge has an Ethereal Stone.

Go back south through the narrow pass and use your monster mount to charge through the ice block near the center of the map leading to the upper level. At the top, turn south and check the southwest tip of this upper area to find a Sparkly Spot with an Equable Emerald. Head west along the path north of the ice block to find a Treasure Chest at the west end. Open it to obtain a Serpent's Soul.

Travel north and then east on the upper level and cross the land bridge toward Trial Isle. On the other side, you will find a Treasure Chest at the southeast dead end. It contains a Psyche Swiper shield. Return to the north and enter the building. You are again in the Realm Between Worlds with another glowing symbol in front of you. Heal up and Save your game at the Statue, if you want, and step on the symbol to warp to Trial Isle.

TRIAL ISLE

Trial Isle looks a lot like the Temple of Dawn at Havens Above. There is another statue outside if you ever want to Save your game here. Drustan's Labyrinth - Trial Isle has now been added to your Zoom list. Enter the Temple of Tranquility.

There are Watchers here, including the Elder. This is where you will begin other trials if you decide to challenge them. The Watchers offer all the amenities you could need. The Watcher in the antechamber will restore your HP/MP. Your Fun-Size Forge is already set up and the Watcher beside it will sell you Perfectionist's Pearls to Rework items. Another Watcher serves as the bank and the one on the east side of the entrance has an Item Shop. • Umbra uses Sweet Breath to put party members to Sleep and it can cast Kasap.
  • Vicious Chasmonaut can cast Kasap and has a dull dance that may reduce your Attack.
  • Vicious Heavy Hood can use a desperate attack or flex to increase its attack and defence, and set up HP regeneration. It also may call for backup.
  • Vicious Bad Hare can kick a target in the face or let loose with its fists to strike random targets.

  • Vicious Penny Pincher can spread the smell of gold around to mesmerise the party or drain the party's MP.

The layout of The Cruel Crypt is similar to that of The Cryptic Crypt. You arrive in the central cell at the north end. There are places where the floor will collapse, dropping you into the Lower Level, and they are in the same locations as in The Cryptic Crypt. The Lower Level is configured differently and you will need to drop through the floor a couple of times to cover the entire area.

Like on the Path to Trial Isle, time passes differently here than in your world. Many monsters appear only during certain times of day, and the time of day changes only when you change zones, regardless of what the clock shows on the area map. To change the time of day, you will need to warp out, rest at an Inn or Campsite until the desired time of day, and enter again from Trial Isle.

Exit the cell block and pass through the boss room to the room with the fountain. The goddess statue has been replaced with a statue of Drustan and he won't heal you or save your game. Leave through the door to the south and head west at the intersection. A Sparkly Spot near the north wall has a Gold Nuglet for you.

Return to the intersection and continue east, turning south into the east large room. The northeast hall leads to a small room with a Treasure Chest that contains a Mini Medal x2. Back in the large room, follow the hall in the southeast corner south. After the hall jogs west, you will reach an area where the floor collapses and you will fall into the Lower Level.

The room you fall into has a Treasure Chest near the east wall that holds the Recipe Book, Kings of the Rings. Now you can forge the Catholicon Ring and the Goddess Ring. Follow the hall west and north from this room and unlock the door leading to the large room on the Lower Level. There are six slot machines here in two rows of three. In the west row, the south machine will give you 500 Casino Tokens and the center one has 30 Tokens. The north machine is a Vicious Penny Pincher. The north machine in the east row has 300 Tokens, the center one has 100 Tokens while the south machine is another Vicious Penny Pincher. Defeat a sparkling Vicious Demonrider in the large room and use its steed to climb the claw-marked wall of the west hallway and return to the Upper Level.

The hallway you arrive in leads to the western large room on the Upper Level. The eastern hallway on the south wall leads to another small room with a Treasure Chest that is actually a Vicious Mimic. Defeat it and it will leave a Seed of Skill.

Go back to the large room and follow the hallway in the southwest corner all the way down to another small room. There is a Treasure Chest in the southwest corner that contains an Agate of Evolution. If you leave through the hall to the east the floor will collapse, dropping you into an isolated room on the Lower Level. At the end of the only hall leaving this room is a ladder you can use to go back to the Upper Level.

You reach the Upper Level in a short hallway near the southern end of the area. Head east at the intersection and then south from the next room. Follow the east-west hallway past an intersection to a dead end room. A Sparkly Spot in the southwest corner hides a chunk of Densinium.

Return to the intersection and turn south. Step on the glowing symbol in the room ahead to exit to the Realm Between Worlds. You can restore your HP/MP and Save your game at the statue. The glowing symbol here will take you to the next area of the Trial.

You may want to take a break here and Zoom to Trial Isle for some forging. The Recipe Book you just found lets you craft a Catholicon Ring, arguably the best accessory in the game. It protects against all these status ailments:

  • Sleep
  • Confusion
  • Poison
  • Venom
  • Bedazzlement
  • Paralysis
  • Turn Skip

At +3 quality, it provides 50% protection against each listed status ailment. Equip a party member with two of them for near complete immunity. Some high-end materials are required, though.

Gold Bars are sold at Trial Isle, but they are expensive. You also can get them from the Octagonia Casino for 100000 Tokens, and they are a rare drop by Malicious Balhib found at Mount Pang Lai. You can buy Perfect Panacea at most shops, and the shop at L'Académie sells Royal Rubies. Red Wood is a common drop from the Red Mist found in The Hekswood and the Malicious Stump Champ in The First Forest.

Make as many as you feel comfortable grinding for.

If you left to use the forge, you can return to where you were by examining the western Seedling to re-enter the Trial. Make your way through The Cruel Crypt again and use the glowing symbol to reach the Realm Between Worlds and beyond that, the Eerie Valley.

The Eerie Valley is laid out much like The Eerie Eyrie. As with The Cruel Crypt, you will need to leave the Trial to affect the time of day. When you want to do that, Zoom to a Campsite somewhere and rest until the right time of day. Then restart the Trial by touching the west Seedling at Trial Isle. You will have to pass through The Cruel Crypt again to return to where you are now.

You arrive in the area at the far north of the map. Head east first and climb up into the Phoenix's Nest. At the east end, by the base of the twisted tree, you will find a Treasure Chest containing a phial of Lumen Essence. This is what Miko was looking for to restore her mirror. You can Zoom to Hotto and find Miko in Mount Fuji now or do it later.

Cross the water and head due south to find a tree at the edge of a cliff. You can drop the vine hanging from the tree to create a shortcut to the lower riverbank area but don't go down the vine yet. Enter the tunnel to the west and walk south. There is a Sparkly Spot in the middle of the tunnel with a Cumulonimbough.

In the open area to the east, defeat a sparkling Vicious Dread Dragooner and use its dragon mount to flap up the southern wall to the upper level. Go west as far as you can and then north into a small separate area. A cluster of blue crystals on the ground will drop three Sparkly Spots with a chunk of Densinium, a chunk of Orichalcum and a Brighten Rock.

Keep your dragon mount and head through the canyon to the south and you will drop into the lower level. Follow this canyon to its southern dead end. In a small cave there you will find a Treasure Chest that holds a Fire Ball x3. North and east of the Chest is a tree with a hanging vine. You can drop the vine to create a shortcut to the lower level here, but don't go down yet. Go back north to where the canyon jogs west. Just before you get there, drop down to the riverbank on the east. At the south end of this area you can flap up to a small ledge that has a Sparkly Spot with a piece of Red Wood.

Use a Vicious Dread Dragooner's dragon to reach items on high ledges.

On the east side of the north riverbank is a high ledge you can reach with your dragon mount. Open the Treasure Chest on the ledge to obtain a Mini Medal x3. At the north end of the north riverbank, go through a narrow pass east into a small open area. As you enter, look near the north wall for a Sparkly Spot with a Cumulonimbough. Continue east into the caves and follow the tunnel south. At the first intersection, turn west to find a Treasure Chest at the dead end. Open it to get Drustan's Helm.

Return to the intersection and go south. The next cave has tunnels leaving to the southwest and southeast. Take the southwest tunnel to a dead end where a Sparkly Spot has a Dieamend. Take the southeast tunnel this time and follow it until you reach the south open area. There is another sparkling Vicious Dread Dragooner on the riverbank here. Defeat it and use its mount to flap up to the ledges near the cave entrance. The ledge above and east of the cave entrance has a Treasure Chest that holds a Devilry Drinker. Stay on the ledge and follow it west, past the cave entrance, and drop down to a lower ledge with a Sparkly Spot where you can collect a Cumulonimbough.

Fly south across the river. To the southeast of where you dropped a vine from a tree earlier is a low ledge with a Sparkly Spot that has a Dracolyte. Follow the river as it turns south and check the east bank for a Treasure Chest that holds the Recipe Book, A Hero's Book of Better Weapons. Now you can use some of those weapons you found recipes for earlier to make the Supernova Sword, Dashing Dagger, Stellarang, Brilliant Staff, Stud Poker, Giga Gringham Whip, Dragovian Lord Claws and Climaxe.

Now you need to fly back north to leave The Eerie Valley. With your dragon mount, you can fly over to the north riverbank and then west into the large open area. Take the narrow northern pass toward the green dot on your map marked "???". Step on the glowing symbol to reach the Realm Between Worlds. Heal and Save at the statue and then step on the next glowing symbol to enter The Vault. Approach the statue of Morcant in the center to prompt a scene. You will be given an opportunity to reorganize, re-equip and re-inventory your battle party before continuing with the Trial. When you are ready, speak to Drustan again.

Boss: Blind Hatred
HP: ~4200

Boss: Blind Hatred's Shadow
HP: ~800

EXP: 8000
Gold Coins: 3200
Items: None

Blind Hatred is like a beefed-up version of Tyriant and it will attack twice. Its normal attack causes 200 HP damage and it may bring its weapon crashing down on one target for 250 HP damage. It can cast Kazammle for 250 HP damage to a party member. It also may lash out to strike all party members for 180 HP damage, or use its orb to unleash a sinister shadow The Shadow will cast Oomphle on Blind Hatred and Kasap on your party.

To successfully complete the trial, you must defeat Blind Hatred in 25 moves or less. You shouldn't have much trouble meeting this requirement. Depending on how many levels you have gained and what equipment you have acquired since the end of the main game, you may be able to finish in half that many moves. Venom is not as effective against an undead boss, so Erik's damage-dealing trio is less attractive. You are better off using a typical boss strategy here.

With a party of Hero, Jade, Veronica and Serena, Hero can attack with Unbridled Blade or Sword Dance. Jade can Re-Vamp and attack with Multifeet or Multithrust. Veronica can cast Oomphle on Hero and Sap on Blind Hatred. Serena can cast Kabuff and be ready to heal the party. When Blind Hatred's Shadow joins the fray, Hero and Veronica can use attacks like Quadraslash and Kaboom (Kaboomle) to eliminate the Shadow while still damaging Blind Hatred.

After you successfully complete the Trial, Drustan will grant you one wish. He offers you five choices:

  • A super powerful weapon
Receive the Recipe Book, Supreme Secrets of the Sword of Light. It teaches you how to forge the Supreme Sword of Light. If you create the sword, you earn the Swordsmith of Light Trophy.
  • To be able to enter a top-level horse race
Opens the Black Cup horse races in Gallopolis.
  • A copy of the Ogler's Digest
Receive the Ogler's Digest accessory, which increases the chance of becoming Pepped Up.
  • To marry Gemma
Return to Cobblestone and rest at your house to earn the Till Death Do Us Part Trophy.
  • To change Serena's hairstyle
Receive the Ring of Changes accessory, which returns Serena's hairstyle to what it was at the end of Act 2. You must have this accessory, along with all other appearance-altering items, to earn the Dedicated Follower of Fashion Trophy.

Making Wishes

Each time you complete one of the Trials, you will be granted a wish. There are three Trials (Disciple's Trial, Sage's Trial and Luminary's Trial) and you have your choice from among five wishes. The first, fourth and fifth choices are associated with Trophies.

You can eventually choose all five wishes. You need to complete one of the Trials a second time to make your fourth wish. The second time you complete a Trial you will face a different, stronger boss. For the fifth wish you can complete the same Trial a third time or complete one of the other Trials a second time.

There is an Accolade, but no Trophy, for making all five wishes.

Make your choice and he will not only grant the wish, he will give you a random Seed or a Pretty Betsy, as well. You will automatically return to The Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle. Now you can attempt the Sage's Trial.

Sage's Trial

You can attempt this Trial after you:

  • Complete the main game scenario
  • Complete post-game events up to those at Havens Above
  • Find three Seedlings
  • View subsequent events at Havens Above and The Tower of Lost Time
  • Pass through Drustan's Labyrinth and enter Trial Isle
  • Complete the Disciple's Trial

To undertake the Sage's Trial, enter the Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and touch the northern Seedling.

You will be transported to the Realm Between Worlds. Ahead is a glowing symbol and beside it a statue where you can recover HP/MP and Save your game. Step onto this glowing symbol to enter The Fierce Forest.

The Fierce Forest is laid out similar to The First Forest but you can't get around quite as easily. You arrive at the Summit Altar and to leave the Forest, you need to make your way down to the bridge on the west side. The spiraling path is broken in places and you have to use glowing symbols to teleport from one area to another. As in the Disciple's Trial, you will need to warp out and return to change the time of day.

If you are not interested in collecting items in The Fierce Forest, you can take a shortcut. There is a glowing symbol behind the Summit Altar that will take you directly to the western bridge.

Take the spiraling path down from the Summit, ignoring the glowing symbols southeast of the Altar, and pass under the Altar. To the east is a vine suspended from a tree that will take you down to the lower level. Cross this small area heading northeast and use another vine inside the large tree to descend again. Inside the tree trunk is a Sparkly Spot with a Night Stick. Upon leaving the base of the tree trunk, go west and look behind the base of another tree to find a Sparkly Spot with a Spectralite.

Follow the path east and cross the stone bridge to the eastern area. Use the fungus disks around the tree to the south to descend again. Midway down, jump over a couple of disks to the east where another Sparkly Spot has a piece of Red Wood. At the bottom, follow the path to the south dead end and look west for a Treasure Chest that contains Serenica's Circlet. You can't go any further, so head back up to the summit and the glowing symbols you ignored earlier.

Step on the southernmost glowing symbol (3) to end up in the South area of the Forest. At the bottom of the waterfall to the north you will find a Treasure Chest holding a Mini Medal x3. Go back southeast, past the glowing symbol and across a stream, and steer north to reach a dead end to the east. A Sparkly Spot at the end has a Night Stick. Go back the way you came and turn south before you reach the stream. this path leads down to the lower level of the South area. There is a Treasure Chest at the west dead end that contains the Recipe Book, The Fandom of the Opera. It teaches you to make the Phantom Mask, Dark Robe and Murky Mittens. Go back to the glowing symbol (3) and return to the Summit.

Use the north glowing symbol (2) this time to reach the southern part of the West area of the Forest. Don't jump off the ledge into the water. Instead, turn around and enter the tunnel behind you. Follow the circular tunnel until you reach an intersecting tunnel going north. It leads to a small cave where you will find a Treasure Chest that holds an Über Agate of Evolution. Leave the cave and take the west tunnel to the outside.

Follow this path northwest until you reach the stream. Behind a log near the bottom of the waterfall is a Sparkly Spot with a Spectralite crystal. Cross the stream and continue north. A wall of light blocks the wooden bridge here, so continue north. The trail will turn northeast and end at a wall with a hanging vine. Climb up to the small area above. Climb up the rock ledges to the north where you will find a Treasure Chest containing the Recipe Book, What a Wonderful World Tree. Now you can craft the Yggdrasil Crown and Yggdrasil Dress Coat, the appearance-altering Yggdrasil Set for Rab. Drop off the ledges and go south to a dead end. A sparkling plant there will drop three Sparkly Spots with an Yggdrasil Leaf and a piece of Technicolour Dreamcloth x2.

Return to the lower level and cross the stream to the south. Enter the tunnel and follow it around to the east exit where the glowing symbol (2) will take you back to the Summit. Go up to the Altar this time and step on the glowing symbol (1) behind it to be teleported to the west end of the wooden bridge. A Noble Dragon blocks your way to the glowing symbol on the other end of the bridge. Defeat it and step on the glowing symbol (Exit) to re-enter the Realm Between Worlds.

You can use the statue to heal and Save your game, then step on the nearby glowing symbol to reach Hoarder's Keep.

Hoarder's Keep looks a lot like The Gyldenhall. It still has one-way doors to complicate moving around and there are additional obstacles breaking up some floors into sections. Again, the monsters will not change by time of day until you warp out and return. You arrive in the Throne Room at the top of Hoarder's Keep. A Golden Goliath guards the only exit to the south. Pass through the door behind the monster and take the stairs down to Level 3.

When you leave the stairwell (9) and enter the room to the north, you will see a glowing symbol on the west side of the room. That is your goal, but there are collapsing sections of the floor on its east and north sides. If you fall through the east section, you will end up in the central room on Level 1. Falling through the north section drops you into a hallway on the west side of Level 2.

You need to collect some items anyway, so ignore the glowing symbol for now and take the stairs in the northwest corner (8) down to Level 2. Go west into the large room and find a Sparkly Spot in the southwest corner that has a Gold Nuglet. Take the only exit, through the north door, and turn east. At the intersection, you will see a Treasure Chest on the other side of the wall of metal bars. You will get to that later. Head south at the intersection and go through the door at the south end. The door on the south side of this room is locked from the other side, so take the stairs west (2) down to Level 1.

These stairs lead to the large central room on Level 1. In the northwest corner of this room, a Sparkly Spot has a Gold Nuglet. The north and south doors are both locked from the other side, so take the east stairs (1) back up to Level 2. At the top of the stairs, turn north and pass through the door to the east. Follow the hall east and then north into the northeast room of Level 2. Through the hall on the west side of the room you will see the Treasure Chest by the wall of metal bars that you could not get earlier. Open it now to obtain Drustan's Shield. Use the south stairs (4) to go back down to Level 1.

There are several slot machines here. The two slot machines along the east wall are actually Vicious Token Takers, as is the west machine in the second row. The rest of the machines have Casino Tokens for you. After collecting Tokens, exit west through a short hallway to the northwest room. Through the south door is a hallway leading to the southwest room. Use the stairs (3) in the northeast corner of this room to reach a small room in the southwest corner of Level 2. The Treasure Chest here contains a Gold Bar. Through the hallway to the east, you can unlock the door leading north, but you don't need to go back that way now. Return to the stairs (3) and go back down to Level 1.

Exit the southwest room by the east door into a hallway. At the intersection, turn south and open the Treasure Chest at the dead end to obtain the Recipe Book, Eternal Elegance, which lets you create the Crown of Eternity and Gown of Eternity, an appearance-altering set for Veronica. If you return to the intersection and continue north, you can unlock the one-way door into the large central room but don't enter it. Instead, return to the intersection and head east. The door at the end leads to the southeast room on Level 1. Go through the door in the northeast corner and follow the hall north to a small room. The Sparkly Spot in the southwest corner has an Agate of Evolution.

Return to the southeast room and use the stairs (6) on the west side to reach Level 2. Pass through this room and take the stairs (7) up to Level 3. At the top of the stairs is a small room with a long hallway extending west. At the end of the hallway, go through the door to the north into the west room on this Level. The door in the northeast corner will take you to the room with the glowing symbol. Step on it to reach the Realm between Worlds.

Recover and Save at the statue, and then step on the nearby glowing symbol to enter Serenica's Chamber. Speak with Drustan to accept his next challenge.

Boss: Unfathomable Anger
HP: ~7500
EXP: 9000
Gold Coins: 4000
Items: None

Unfathomable Anger acts twice per turn. Its normal attack can deal 300 HP damage and may Envenomate the target. It can hurl a Blast of Hellfire at one target for about 150 HP damage. When it rocks the boat, all party members take about 150 HP damage and may fall down and miss turns. It can cast Maelstrom to deal 150 HP of wind-elemental damage to affected party members.

This boss can cast Oomphle to boost its attack and it will use its Orb to unleash a Crimson Mist, causing your party to take more damage. If it does both, the normal attack can deal closer to 600 HP damage and the other attacks may cause 300 HP damage. A party member targeted with both attacks during a turn may not survive.

Due to the heavy damage this dragon does, you may want "?" at the top of your Line-Up to absorb its attacks with Forbearance. Equip "?" with armour and a shield that reduce elemental damage for extra protection against Hellfire and Maelstrom. Although Unfathomable Anger is not immune, Envenomate and Sap have a good chance to miss, so you are better off going just with physical attackers boosted with Oomphle. Even without Envenomate, Erik probably still can out-damage Jade by using Divide. It spends a turn you could be using to attack, but the damage on the second turn makes up for it.

A recommended party includes "?", Hero, Erik and Sylvando. Equip them with all your Catholicon Rings to protect against Venom and losing turns. You should have "?" use Forbearance every turn. Hero can attack with Sword Dance or Unbridled Blade. Erik should Divide and then attack with Fatal Flash or Critical Claim. After Sylvando casts Oomphle on Hero and Erik, you can bring Serena in to replace him. She can cast Buff on "?" and then assume healing duties.

You need to defeat Unfathomable Anger in 30 moves or less. Although the suggested set-up leaves you with only two attackers, you shouldn't have to spend as many turns healing and reviving party members.

As with the Disciple's Trial, Drustan will reward you by granting one of the four remaining wishes. After you make your choice, he will also give you a random Seed or a Pretty Betsy.

You will automatically return to The Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and you can try the Luminary's Trial.

Luminary's Trial

You can attempt this Trial after you:

  • Complete the main game scenario
  • Complete post-game events up to those at Havens Above
  • Find three Seedlings
  • View subsequent events at Havens Above and The Tower of Lost Time
  • Pass through Drustan's Labyrinth and enter Trial Isle
  • Complete the Disciple's Trial and the Sage's Trial

To undertake the Luminary's Trial, enter the Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and touch the eastern Seedling.

You will be transported to the Realm Between Worlds. Ahead is a glowing symbol and beside it a statue where you can recover HP/MP and Save your game. Step onto this glowing symbol to enter The Citadel of Spite.

The Citadel of Spite looks much like the Fortress of Fear. You arrive outside Level 2 of the Citadel. You will need to make your way through the Citadel to the exit at the north end of Level 4. Take the stairs west down and cross the narrow bridge. Go down the stairs circling the tower and cross another bridge to reach a door that leads to the east side of Level 2.

Pass through this east room and follow the hallway to the round chamber in the center. Exit west and at the next intersection turn south. Head east from the next room to reach the room directly south of the round chamber. A Treasure Chest near the east wall contains a Spectralite crystal. Go back to the four-way intersection and turn west. The exit on the west side of the next room leads outside to a small platform with a Treasure Chest that is actually a Vicious Mimic. When you defeat it, it will leave a Seed of Skill. Back inside, take the north path at the intersection. There are two stairways here leading down to Level 1. Midway down each stairway is a slot machine. The one on the east landing holds 500 Tokens, but the machine on the west landing is actually a Gold Grabber. Continue down the stairs to Level 1.

At the bottom, look under the central stairs for a Treasure Chest containing the Recipe Book, Ye Manifold Methods of Mighty Drustan. Now you can forge the Sword of Judgment, Sacred Spear, Soul Sucker, Exotoga and Seraph's Robe. Leave the room to the south. The intersecting hall to the west leads to the round chamber in the center, but the door is magically sealed. Follow the path south and then west and exit to the Level 2 - Exterior.

Go up a few steps to a platform and defeat a sparkling Vicious Hard-Boiled Eggsoskeleton. Climb inside and jump onto the platform to the northwest where there is a Sparkly Spot with a Chronocrystal. Jump twice more and use the door to enter Level 3.

Climb inside an Eggsoskeleton and jump to high ledges. You won't be hurt by charged floor grids while inside a Face Invader.

Pass through the first long room into a hallway. Follow the hallway west, ignoring the hall leading south, to its western dead end where you can find Erdwin's Coronet in a Treasure Chest. Take that intersecting hallway south and pass through the round room in the center. At the "T" intersection ahead, turn west. Continue west until you reach the room in the southwest corner of the map. Defeat a sparkling Vicious Face Invader and climb inside. Ride your Face Invader back east, past the round room, and across the charged floor grids, to reach the room at the far east. You will see a huge Treasure Chest near the north wall. It is actually a Pandora's Big Bad Box.

Don't Underestimate Me!

Pandora's Big Bad Box has about 2500 HP and high defence. It will attack three times and it can use desperate attacks. It also can cast Kasnooze to put the party to Sleep, Kathwack to instantly defeat multiple party members, or Drain Magic to steal their MP. It can use Snub, too, to protect itself from spells.

When you defeat the huge Treasure Chest, open the normal Treasure Chest that remains to find a bottle of Pep Pop, a Usable Item that will Pep Up everyone in the battle party. Head back across the charged floor grids, past the round room, and exit the next room to the north this time. Pass over more charged floor grids to the north and west. Leave your Face Invader and use the west door to reach the Level 3 - Exterior.

If you drop off the southern tip of this outdoor platform, you will end up on the small platform outside Level 2 where you fought the Vicious Mimic. Head north instead and step on the glowing symbol to be teleported to a platform further south. Don't cross the bridge ahead yet. Turn around and drop off the end of the ramp, then head south and drop down again. At the top of a short ramp and a few stairs to the southwest, you will find a Treasure Chest that holds Drustan's Sword. Return to the lower platform and defeat a sparkling Vicious Hellrider. Use its steed to climb the claw-marked wall to the northeast. Through the archway to the east you can find a Treasure Chest with Serpent's Soul x3 inside. There are three slot machines here against the east wall. The north machine has 1000 Tokens and the center machine has 100 Tokens. The south machine is actually a Gold Grabber. Go back through the archway and climb the wall to the northwest to return to the glowing symbol where you arrived. Now you can cross the bridge to reach a door guarded by a Vicious Great Dragon. Use the door to enter Level 4.

Climb the outside walls with a Skullrider's mount. Use a Dread Dragooner's dragon to reach remote treasure, and fly up and down the central chamber.

Proceed north and, at the intersection, turn west and step on the glowing symbol to teleport across the gap to the west side of Level 4. Pass through this long room, and the next long room to exit west and reach the Level 4 Exterior. The Treasure Chest on this small platform contains Slime Crown x3. Go back inside and cross the room to a door on the east side that leads to a dais with a floor switch. Jump on the floor switch to raise some platforms farther north.

Go back through the two long rooms and use the glowing symbol to return to the central hallway. There is no glowing symbol to cross the east gap, so head north, through the round central room, and exit north. Ahead, you will see the platforms you raised by stepping on the floor switch. At the intersection, head west to a dead end where you will find a Treasure Chest that holds the Recipe Book, If I Could Turn Back Time. Now you can use the Rusty Sceptre that Father Benedictus gave you to create the Sceptre of Time. Return to the intersection and continue east to another dead end with a Treasure Chest. This one contains the Recipe Book, Big Hitters of the Battlefield, and allows you to forge the Shamshir of Light, El Stupendo, Time Shear, Hunter's Moon, Staff of Eternity, Heaven's Talon, Hellbeast's Leash, Decimators and Kairos Cleaver.

Return to the round room and defeat a sparking Vicious Dread Dragooner. Use its dragon mount to fly over to the east platform and collect Pep Pip x4 from the Treasure Chest. Still on your dragon, drop down through the floor to the platform between Level 4 and Level 3 on the west side of the round room. The Treasure Chest there contains an Über Agate of Evolution. Fly to the platform on the west side and check the Sparkly Spot for a piece of Evencloth. Drop down again to Level 2 where a Treasure Chest on the north platform holds Mini Medal x5 and a Sparkly Spot on the south platform has another piece of Evencloth. Drop down once more to reach the round room on Level 1. Although you didn't shatter any crystals above, there still are Sparkly Spots here. Collect them all to get an Equable Emerald, a Royal Ruby, a Savvy Sapphire, an Artful Amethyst and a Sunny Citrine.

Leave the round room on Level 1 by the east door. At the intersection, turn south into a room with a Treasure Chest containing a Hell Sabre. The room north of the intersection has a Sparkly Spot with a Mini Medal. Going east from the intersection, you will see a door guarded by a Mechan-O'-Wyrm. Past the door is a room that has a dais with a floor switch. Jump on the switch to release the magic seal on the west door of the Level 1 round room.

Go back to the round room and leave by the south door. Use the door at the end of the hallway to exit the Citadel and reach the Level 1 - Exterior. At the northeast tip, where there had been a statue at the Fortress of Fear, is a Treasure Chest that holds a Sage's Stone. Take the south stairs down to a platform with a glowing symbol that will teleport you to the southeast area of Level 4.

On Level 4, head east and then north to a "T" intersection. There is a Treasure Chest in the east room that contains a phial of Yggdrasil Dew. The room to the west has a floor switch on a dais. This one raises some more platforms to the north. Backtrack to the glowing symbol, return to the Level 1 - Exterior, and enter the Citadel again.

Defeat another Vicious Dread Dragooner in the round room on Level 1 and use its dragon mount to flap all the way up to Level 4. Exit the round room on Level 4 by the north door and cross the newly raised platforms to a "T" intersection. You still need to raise some platforms to complete the path north. Head east at the intersection and enter the small room at the east end. The floor switch there will release the magic seal on the north door in the round room on Level 1. Return to the intersection and continue west. Through the door and across the room is the last floor switch. This one will raise the remaining platforms to complete the path at the north end of Level 4.

Return to the intersection, but don't go north yet. Head back to the round room and drop down to the round room on Level 1. Use the now-unsealed north door to reach a room with three Treasure Chests. They contain Drustan's Armour, Erdwin's Tunic and Serenica's Surplice. Along with Drustan's Helm, Drustan's Armour completes an appearance-altering set for "?". Erdwin's Tunic and Erdwin's Coronet form an appearance-altering set for the Hero. Equip Serena with Serenica's Surplice and Serenica's Circlet to alter her appearance.

Go back to the round room and defeat another Vicious Dread Dragooner. With its dragon mount, flap all the way up to Level 4 and head north over the platforms you raised to reach the final glowing symbol. Step on the glowing symbol to enter Erdwin's Chamber and move forward to talk to Drustan. You will need to complete this Trial in 40 moves or less.

Boss: Sheer Decadence
HP: ~4800
EXP: 4400
Gold Coins: 2000
Items: None

Boss: All-Consuming Greed
HP: ~2600
EXP: 5600
Gold Coins: 300
Items: None

Both bosses can act twice per turn and their high agility means they can take another turn before your party completes its round. Sheer Decadence's normal attack can deal 150 HP damage. It can cast Kafrizzle for 200 HP damage to one target and it can summon a cyclone to deal 130 HP damage to everyone. Its seductive dance can make party members lose turns dancing. When it uses its orb, Giga Drain Magic will steal MP from the party, and its third eye can Mesmerise you.

All-Consuming Greed can attack normally for 200 HP damage. It can use Rake 'n' Break to cause 200 HP damage to one target and remove all buffs. Its Slice and Dice attack strikes random party members 4 times for about 100 HP. It can cast Kabuff, Oomphle and Acceleratle to boost the enemy party's attack, defence and speed. It also can call for backup to add a Vicious Gyldenbritches or two Vicious Gyldenauts to the fight. It may use its orb to turn multiple party members into lumps of gold, causing them to miss turns. And it can focus to Pep itself up, too.

The difficulty of this battle can vary widely depending on your level and equipment. Reaching level 70 before attempting the Trial can mean the difference between success and utter defeat. A suggested party includes the Hero, Jade, Sylvando and Veronica. (Erik wasn't invited because there is too much chance of him being put of commission before he can set up his high-damage attacks). Catholicon Rings can keep the party from missing turns due to Sheer Decadence's dances, but they won't keep you from being mesmerised or turned to gold.

All-Consuming Greed has fewer HP and you can make things easier on yourself if you can eliminate it before it turns you to gold or summons backup. Veronica's Magic Burst can take a big chunk of HP from both bosses, even more if it is prepped with Channel Anger. Sylvando can pass his turn to her with Ladies First so she can cast both Channel Anger and Magic Burst the first round. Hero can attack All-Consuming Greed with Sword Dance and Jade can use Multithrust (it seems to deal more overall damage than Multifeet to bosses with high defence).

Sheer Decadence will be easier to defeat now since you don't have to deal with four boss turns. Magic Burst consumes all of Veronica's MP, so she will be of little use until you do something about that. Sylvando can use a Sage's Elixir/Elfin Elixir to replenish her MP and be ready with Sobering Slap to bring a mesmerised companion around. Veronica then can cast Sap on the remaining boss. After that, both Sylvando and Veronica can cast Oomphle on Hero and Jade. If HP becomes a problem, Hero can use Omniheal.

Following your victory, like the previous Trials, Drustan will reward you by granting one of the three remaining wishes. After you make your choice, he will also give you a random Seed or a Pretty Betsy.

You automatically return to The Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and you can challenge any of the Trials again.

Two More Wishes

THE FOURTH WISH

You can challenge any of the three Trials a second time to face a new final battle and make your fourth wish. The new boss battle will be the same regardless of which of the three seedlings you select. You have already collected all the treasure in the Trial areas, so you just need to pass through one of them to reach The Vault and accept Drustan's new challenge.

The Disciple's Trial made you go through The Cruel Crypt and The Eerie Valley. It is a quick trip through The Cruel Crypt to the glowing symbol at the southern end, provided you avoid the floor traps. In the Eerie Valley, you can go through the tunnel south of your starting point, defeat a Vicious Dread Dragooner in the first open area, and fly to the glowing symbol exit to the Vault.

If you select the Sage's Trial, you can skip The Fierce Forest altogether by using the glowing symbol behind the altar where you arrive. In Hoarder's Keep, fall through the floor east of the glowing symbol on Level 3 to drop into the central room on Level 1. Exit south and use the stairway in the southeast room to reach Level 2. Then use the other stairway in the Level 2 southeast room to reach the south of Level 3. Follow the only path around to the glowing symbol and exit to the Vault

Choose the Luminary's Trial and you can enter the Citadel of Spite, make your way down to the round chamber on Level 1, defeat a Vicious Dread Dragooner and use its dragon to fly all the way up to Level 4 and the exit to the Vault.

Whichever route you choose, enter the Vault and speak with Drustan to take the fourth challenge. You will need to defeat these two bosses in 50 moves or less.

Boss: Abject Terror
HP: ~7800
EXP: 6000
Gold Coins: 2000
Items: None

Boss: Darkest Despair
HP: ~4200
EXP: 6000
Gold Coins: 2000
Items: None

Abject Terror uses Giga Throw to deal 200 HP damage to affected party members and it may Paralyse them. Its War Cry causes 150 HP damage and may knock party members down. It can cast Kacrackle for 180 HP of ice-elemental damage to everyone. When it readies its blade, it will strike random party members with 7 hits of 150 HP damage each.

Darkest Despair uses Inferno Slash to deal 150 HP of fire-elemental damage to one target. Its swift stab attack deals 150 HP damage and may knock the target down. It has a double slice attack that causes 300 HP damage to a party member and it can cast Kazammle for 200 HP of dark-elemental damage to one target.

Abject Terror's attacks all affect the entire party, while Darkest Despair targets only one party member at a time with its attacks. Both can use Blue Blast to dispel party buffs so you should use Sap rather than boosting party attacks. Both can cast Zing to revive the other, too, and you will want to defeat them at nearly the same time.

You can start with a party of Hero, Erik, Sylvando and Veronica. Set up Veronica's Magic Burst like with the Sheer Decadence/All-Consuming Greed battle. Hero can attack with Sword Dance and Erik can set up his Divide - Fatal Slash attack against Abject Terror. After using Magic Burst, which should deal more than 3000 HP damage to both bosses, you can replace Sylvando and Veronica with Jade and Rab. Jade can attack with Multifeet/Multithrust and Rab can use Kasap on the enemy. With Sap in place, you can bring in Serena to take over healing duties.

On defeating these enemies, like with the previous Trials, Drustan will reward you by granting one of the two remaining wishes. After you make your choice, he will also give you a random Seed or a Pretty Betsy.

You automatically return to The Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and you can challenge any of the Trials again.

THE FIFTH WISH

Like with the fourth wish, select any of the three seedlings in The Temple of Tranquility and make your way through the Trial areas to the Vault. Talk to Drustan to take on his final challenge. You will need to complete this challenge in 50 moves or less.

Boss: Overweening Pride
HP: ~12000
EXP: 16000
Gold Coins: 4800
Items: None

Overweening Pride will attack twice per turn. Its normal attack deals 250 HP damage, and it may come crashing down from above to cause 250 HP damage to one target and knock them down. It can rain down Silver Sparks or spew Pitch-Black Flames for 150 HP damage to affected party members. When it lobs a Lance of Pure Darkness, party members will be hit for 250 HP damage and may be Cursed. Its flurry of blows strikes random targets six times for 100 HP damage each time. When its eyes flash red, party members may begin to hallucinate. It also can use a Disruptive Wave to remove the party's buffs, including Pepped-Up state. It will call for backup to summon either a Pandora's Box or a Crimson Killing Machine with an A3G15.

Although Overweening Pride is not immune to them, Poison and Sap are likely to miss. If you buff the party, the boss will remove the buffs, so this will end up being a straight damage-dealing fight. Skull Rings or Devil's Tails will reduce the damage from most attacks because they are dark-elemental. The Skull Rings offer greater resistance and add protection against the instant-death attacks of Pandora's Box (50% each at +3). They are harder to come by, though. They are a rare drop by Malicious Infanticore at Dundrasil Region, Franticore at Hekswood or Vicious Manticore at Citadel of Spite.

Equipping each member of the battle party with two of the suggested accessories can negate many of Overweening Pride's attacks. Unless you have extras, you probably won't want to be swapping unprotected characters in and out of the party. This strategy uses three physical attackers and a healer: Hero, Erik, Jade and Serena. Hero can attack with Sword Dance, Erik can use Divide and follow with Fatal Slash, and Jade can attack with Multithrust/Multifeet. Serena can begin by casting Kabuff once or twice. The boss may dispel it, but she may as well use it at the beginning when she isn't needed to heal the party. Try to ignore the enemies that answer Overweening Pride's backup call and focus on the Boss. You should be able to finish the battle in 30 moves or less. It certainly could be completed in fewer moves, but this safely meets the challenge requirements.

When you defeat Overweening Pride, like with the previous Trials, Drustan will reward you by granting the final wish. He will also give you a random Seed or a Pretty Betsy and the Recipe Book, A Hero's Book of Brilliant Weapons. Now you can forge the Hypernova Sword, Dynamo Dagger, Galaxarang, Aurora Staff, Split-Pot Poker, Über Gringham Whip, Xenlon Claws and Galaxy Axe.

You automatically return to The Temple of Tranquility at Trial Isle and earn the Heroes' Hero's Hero and Truly A-Maze-Ing accolades.

CHALLENGE THE TRIALS AGAIN

After making all five wishes, you can go back to the Vault through any of the Trial routes. When you speak to Drustan this time, he will allow you to choose one of the five battles you fought to make a wish, and you can take the challenge again.
