If you attempt to save your file on one of the three file slots that was not the last file you saved over, the game will ask to confirm if you wish to save. If you state "No", and repeat this several times over, the Mario cursor will take on a different form than normal. After 20 times of saying "No", Mario will take on a Mute pose, and after 50 times he takes on an Exor pose.

Much like the Super Mushrooms throughout the series, the Amanita enemies in this game are based off of the fungus Amanita muscaria, whose psychadelic effects when eaten can induce feelings of growing larger. Of course, they are also quite harmful, likely influencing their inclusion as an enemy in this game.
Exor is the only boss in the game that can receive 9999 damage from Geno Whirl when timed correctly, which effectively kills it in one hit. This is most likely a programming oversight, as the eyes and mouth cannot be killed in one hit by Geno Whirl.

This is the first game in the Super Mario series in which the original villain of the series (Bowser) is actually helpful to Mario and his friends. It is a concept not echoed often throughout the series, but is often nonetheless featured most often in the other Mario RPG games, such as Paper Mario.

This is the first RPG in the Mario franchise.
Square actually developed most of the game with the development team receiving direct guidance from Shigeru Miyamoto, who was the game's producer.
When composing the music, Yoko Shimomura took liberties from Koji Kondo for his work on Super Mario Bros. and Nobuo Uematsu for his work on Final Fantasy IV, resulting in a soundtrack that catered to both the Mario and RPG universe.
Super Mario RPG uses what's called the "Nintendo SA-1" (Super Accelerator) chip which allows the game to access the RAM faster, higher clock speed, additional data storage, and new direct memory access (DMA) modes, just to name a few.

Yoshio Hongo explained in an interview how Super Mario RPG came to be, commenting: "Square's RPGs sold well in Japan but not overseas. There have been calls from all ages, and from young girls, for another character to which they could become attached. Mario was the best, but had not been in an RPG. Nintendo's director, Mr. Miyamoto also wanted to do an RPG using Mario. There happened to be a chance for both companies to talk, which went well."
