The inspirations for Star Fox were largely derived from the prototype game "NES Glider", which was developed between the NES and later the SNES, and was the best 3D graphics supported by the consoles at the time without a custom chip set. Nintendo gave the developer (Argonaut) the go-ahead to make a custom ship set for the game to improve it, which would become the Super FX chip used in a few SNES titles. The prototype would ultimately then evolve into Star Fox.
