If the spell Cure4 would heal more than 16,383 HP on an enemy, rather than healing HP they will instead regain MP.
There were two versions to FFIV beyond the typical JP and US releases: "HardType" and "EasyType". HardType wasn't released outside of Japan, while EasyType was used both in and outside of Japan. The reason for this was that Square felt that users who didn't have access to FFII and FFIII would be at a disadvantage since they were not familiar with how the formula developed, and thus the game would be more difficult for them.
Final Fantasy IV is the first in the series to use the Active-Time Battle (ATB) system.
Tellah: "You spoony bard!"
Cid: Who's this old fart?
Tellah: Look who's talking!
Mysidian Elder: Evil is like a cancer. It spreads, consuming the soul entirely. You could become as evil as the man you seek.
Cecil: I renounce all loyalty to the King, to the Red Wings, and to Baron!!!
Soldier #1: It looks like it's bothering the Captain as well.
Soldier #2: Even if we were ordered to do so...
Soldier #3: Taking the crystal from innocent people is...
Mysidian Elder: These two are the twin magicians, Palom and Porom. They're young and still in training, but they posses power far beyond their years...
Palom: Damn straight! I'm gonna help you, so you better be grateful!
Yang's Wife: Yang! Be sure to teach these bastards how much we like invasions!
Yang: Yes, ma'am!
Cid: Golbez! The Airship Engineer Cid has something for you, as well as my middle finger! (sets off bomb)
Yang: What are you doing!?
Gilbart: He's not human!
Black Mage in the Tower of Prayer: Just where do hearts of wickedness come from? Everyone is born as an innocent newborn at the start, and yet
Cecil: Where are they [the Crystals of Darkness]?
Kain: On the opposite side of the face of the Earth. Literally, the underground.
Cid: How the hell do we get there? Dig a hole or something?
Thus the Dark Knight Cecil, formerly
the commander of the Red Wings,
the country of Baron's airship force,
was stripped of his position.
Along with Cain, commander of the
Dragon Knights, he departed Baron Castle
for a valley enshrouded in deep fog
on the way to the border village Mist...
Airships, vessels that soar through the
heavens, had been a dream of man...
But the mobilization of those airships
could be not only the realization of a dream,
but also a means to satisfy dark desires.
Baron had become the most powerful military
nation thanks to its Red Wings airship force.
Why would Baron, already in possession
of such great power, seek the Crystals...?
And why had so many monsters begun
to show themselves in broad daylight...?
The Crystals simply shone
their light in silence...
Born of a dragon's mouth,
he whom soars high in the heavens,
carrying the darkness and the light,
brings new promises to the sleeping earth.
Sheathed in the neverending light,
the moon bestows blessings and favor
upon the mother land.
However, after its slumber,
the moon once again
goes on a journey
to seek its own light.
Of its kin,
one rests on the Moon,
one rests on the Earth,
The mists of time separates them.
Golbeza and Tella's final battle:
Golbeza: I have no business with a old man like you.
Tella: You may not, but I have mine with you!
Tella: Feel it! Anna's pain!
(Tella casts Bio and Firaga)
Golbeza: In the end, you don't have the power to defeat me.
(Tella casts Blizzaga and Thundaga)
Tella: The time has come to use Meteor...
Cecil: Stop it! If you do that...
Yang: You'll kill yourself!
Tella: I'll convert my life into MP... TO DEFEAT YOU!
(Tella casts Meteor)
Golbeza: Ugh! This cannot be... Meteor...
(Golbeza is defeated)
Golbez: I must thank you for the other day. How could you possibly know that I love having meteors dropped on my head?
Tellah: Even if my life must end, I must squelch this agony in which I live.
Cid: Why you ... you imposter [Cagnazzo]! You bastard! Putting me in a moldy, old place like that! I'm gonna get medieval on your ass!
Kain: My Master! Let me kill him [Cecil]!
Golbez: Yeah, like you did at Fabul? Oh, wait... You didn't kill him there...
Palom: And I'm a ... superstar!
Porom: The rude one is my twin brother, Palom.
Palom: Ah, go to hell.
The Mysidian Legend: One born from the mouth of a dragon, rising towards the heavens with Light and Darkness, a sleeping promise shall awaken. Veiled in the light of eternity, Mother Earth shall be blessed with mercy and salvation.
Mysidian Elder: Many have tried to become a Paladin...
Cecil: They tried and failed?
Mysidian Elder: Oh, no. They tried and died...
Yang: Over my dead body!
Golbez: That's the idea.
Golbez: So, you're Cecil... Perfect setting for introductions, don't you think? Well, perfect for me, at least. You're sprawled on the ground and I'm about to take the crystal.
Cecil: (slaps Edward) Damn it! Quit that! Do you think staying here and crying like a child would make Anna happy!? Besides, right now, we need your help!
Edward: Me, help you?
Soldier #1: We earned our positions as the Red Wings crew through valor and bravery. Looting from innocent people is an act of cowardice!
Cecil: That's enough!
Soldier #2: Why are we going as far as pillaging a town of Magicians who don't even resist!?
Connection to Other Media
In the HardType-exclusive Development Room, you can speak with Kenshi Ito, who will mention that you should also play Seiken Densetsu 3. Seiken Densetsu 3 is a real video game, also developed by Square for the Super Famicom, and, much like the HardType Final Fantasy IV, remained Japan-exclusive.
The names of the Four Elemental Archfiends and the creepy doll boss you fight in the Underworld: Barbariccia, Cagnazzo, Scarmiglione, Rubicante, and Calcabrina all come from the names of the twelve Malebranche or demons in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
