While an introduction to this great franchise could seem as all but rendundant, here we go anyway.
It is one of the most venerable JRPG series ever made, harkening all the way back to the NES days and still going (where is that SMT5, Atlus?)
With great art and atmosphere, it really turned the dungeon crawler RPG on its head by being much deeper and story driven, with moral conundrums, demon conversations and other things.
This guide will focus on the SNES entries, specifically Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2 (the data herein is valid for both).
Note that the NES games were remade on the SNES as Kyuukyaku Megami Tensei, and these are also definitely worth a play,
although not directly related to this guide.
A necessary clarification before we begin in earnest: in this series, the word demon has nothing to do with the Christian understanding of the term. Rather, it is the Greek root word that matters here: Daemon - spirit, inteligence, entitty. It has no given morality for good or evil at face value and that's how ti should be understood. Read it as supernatural being.
