A pretty good and unique game

This game, released only for the Super Famicom, follows the events in the original Dragon Ball anime series from the beginning until Goku defeats of Piccolo Daimao.
This game is pretty much classified as an RPG, but in reality, it is much different from other RPGs. First of all, there is really not much for you to do. This game consists mainly of you reading the dialogues on the screen. The only real times you control Goku is during the fighting sequences. Basically, you just sit there most of time reading what the characters say to each other. At certain points in the game, you get the chance to choose decisions that can change the story.

Graphics: 9/10
I had no problems with these graphics. All the characters look just like they should. The backgrounds and colors look just like the show. The scenes may get somewhat repetitive but it is not a big problem.

Sound/Music: 9/10
There are not many sounds in this game, except for the impact of blows during the fighting sequences. What is sorely missing is some voice samples from the anime, like they have in the Dragon Ball fighting games. The music, on the other hand, is terrific! I really love the music in this game. It really sets the mood for the game. The tunes are pretty much repeated throughout this game, but in this case, that's a good thing since all the music is great!

Gameplay: 8.5/10
Like I said before, there really is not much for you to do. You sit there reading a LOT of dialogue. The fighting sequences are fun though. In the fights, basically, you control Goku. The buttons you press on the control pad represent attacks. For example, if you press button B, that is a kick. As you progress through the game, Goku learns more attacks like Chou Kamehameha that you can choose to do using the buttons. Goku also has HP and Ki (which also go up through the game) in the battle sequences. If your HP hits zero from taking too many hits, you are defeated. Your Ki is needed to perform stronger attacks. You can charge up your Ki by holding down the L and R buttons.

Replayability: 6/10
You probably won't play this game again once you beat it. It takes about 6 hours to finish the game. Since you don't do much in this game, it can get boring. The battles in this game can be fun to do again and again. There are a lot of battle sequences in this game too.

This game is a pretty good game. It follows the story of Dragon Ball very closely. All of Goku's main battles in the series are played in this game. You have the chance to fight Tenshinhan, Tao Pai Pai, Kuririn, Jackie Chun, and just anyone else Goku faced off against in Dragon Ball.
If you are a fan of the series, then I recommend you play through this game at least once. However, all the text is in Japanese and with all the dialogues, that's a lot of text.

Overall: 9/10

Rating:   4.5 - Outstanding
