The original concept for the gameplay behind Sonic the Hedgehog came from game designer Yuji Naka playing World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. on the NES as fast as he possibly could.

The initial concept of Sonic the Hedgehog was a more traditional platformer with puzzles and exploration akin to Super Mario Bros. 2. The final product, while still a platformer, focused more dominantly on its now trademark speed. This evolution is even more prominent in its sequel.

An unused rendition of the Marble Zone theme can be found in the game's ROM, suggesting that the Genesis version's Marble Zone was planned to be included in the Master System version at some point.
