Released to the arcades in August of 1992, Virtua Racing was the first true 3D
racer. Ever. It was developed by the legendary Yu Suzuki and his now celebrated
design team, AM2. The game ran on Sega's Model 1 board and was released at a
time when 'virtual reality' was all the rage. The original arcade game boasted
of 8-player linkups, allowing them to all race each other in real-time,
something that was truly amazing for its time. The game did not have
texture-mapping, but that's because it was unheard of at the time. The game
still looked spectacular to those day's standard.

Over the next few years Sega would port the game over to the Genesis, 32x, and
the Saturn. The original arcade version had 3 tracks and one car. The Saturn
version, released in 1995, vastly improved that by expanding the tracks to 10
(seven new ones) and the number of cars to 5 (four new ones).

-Disclaimer-
This guide is under the assumption that you own the US version of the Sega
Saturn game and that you are using the default controller setup. If you're not
I am not responsible for any inaccuracies due to this.

Arcade
This mode is for the player who wants to quickly join any race situation. You
get to choose your track and you don't race in a series. It's pretty much
open-ended racing. You decide.

Grand Prix
This mode is like a season. You complete a series of tracks, get medals, and
you can even save your progress. You will also race with a team throughout this
mode, making the gameplay much deeper versus Arcade mode.

Options
In here you can adjust the vast amount of options the game has to offer.
Configurable options are as follows: players, difficulty, controller, sound
test, custom game, view track, records.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.3 | Gameplay Tips
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

01. If you're just *know* you're going to slam into a wall, do your best to
steer away from it and get your backside to hit the wall. When your back wheels
hit the wall you won't spin out. Contrary to hitting the wall with your front
tires, when you do spin out.

02. When taking corners, like with most racing games, slow down according to
the turn. Don't be impatient and expect to get around the corner. In Virtua
Racing you can't slam into a wall and keep on riding. Either you spin-out/crash
or lose major speed. So come to a slow speed (if you have to) as you approach
the turn, then hit the gas and cut the wheel as you go around.

03. Use the views to your advantage & liking. If you find that you can see
better with a farther view, use it. If you do better with the in-car view then
use that one. You want to be comfortable in order to do your best in a race.

04. Keep an eye on the HUD. Try to make good time in between checkpoints. Look
up at the lap time & checkpoint time every so often. You'd be surprised how
much discipline can help.

05. It IS possible to turn around in a race. Although it almost is never
necessary, to do it you need a wide track. For example, on a few parts in
Amazon Falls it is possible to turn around and go the wrong way.

In order for you to be able master the tracks it is necessary that you remember
every little detail about each track, turn-by-turn. This is why I made this
little walkthrough section. Also, maybe you want to play like you're a rally
driver and have your friend/sibling tell you the turns ahead of time verbally.
All they would have to do is read the following.

When I wrote the walkthroughs I took three main categories into mind: angle,
distance, and direction. The format is in that exact order:
angle > distance > direction.
Note that if there is a straightaway I obviously do not give an angle since
that's impossible.

I didn't feel that there was anything else needing to be explained. Anyway, if
I felt that it was important to throw in a detail in I did so in parenthesis.
Example: hard short right (narrows). What this example means is that in the
turn you'll have to turn hard right for a short period of time.

5.1 | Frequently Asked Questions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Are there any hidden tracks in this Saturn version?
A: No. There's only ten (10).

Q: This game doesn't seem to be two players. Is it?
A: Yes. To play with another person first make sure you have two controllers
plugged into your Saturn. Then go to the Options menu and move to the
"Players" text. Move to the right and leave it on two players. Then go back
   to Arcade mode.

Q: How can I get the spectator mode?
A: Same as above method, just scroll over to "Watch Mode".

Q: Is there REALLY a hidden path in Amazon Falls?
A: Yes, there is. Refer to the Easter Egg section to see how to do it.

Q: How much memory does the game require?
A: 38 free sectors (memory card or system memory).

Q: Why is my game being erased every time I turn of the system?
A: The battery in your Saturn is dead. Refer to the Saturn FAQs on GameFAQs.com
for more help on how to fix this minor problem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.2 | Easter Eggs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hidden path, Amazon Falls
This trick is infamous for being very vaguely explained on code websites.
Here's how to do it. After the first checkpoint on Amazon Falls (there's two in
the level), look to the right and you'll see a gray stone head with a blocked
off path to the right. Drive up to the section of the wall RIGHT BEHIND the
stone head (the last two stripes on the barrier). Drive right through them to
get into this hidden spot. If you hit the wall and it pushed you back on track,
that's because you didn't go up far enough. Remember that you have to go
directly behind the first stone head on the right side after the first
checkpoint.

Perform a "soft reset"
A soft reset, in Virtua Racing, takes you back to the main menu regardless of
where you're at or what you're doing (in a race or at another menu). To do it,
press and hold the START button then press A+B+C (at the same time). You will
then be taken back to the main menu.

Make coconut fall from tree
To do this, go to a level with palm trees (Bay Bridge comes to mind). Next, ram
your car into any of the palm trees you see. A coconut (or what appears to be
one) falls out of the tree.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.3 | Replay Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virtua Racing has a built-in replay mode feature. It allows you to watch the
race from any point-of-view and even dissect the race frame-by-frame.

To get into replay mod hit the B button after the race is over. You'll know
it's time to hit B when the text shows up at the bottom saying so.

Once in the replay mode you can tinker around with the race you just had.

[ C# ]
This option changes the car you're focused on. Pressing B on this button cycles
backward, and lowers the car numbers. Pressing C on this button cycles forward
to the next highest car.

[ VIEW ] BKA: [ VR# ], [ SKY ], [ TV ], [ SPIN ]
These cycles through the different views you can have for each car. What's
makes this feature worth checking out is that it has some views that you don't
get while you're actually playing.

[ <| ]
This moves the frame back once.

[ || ]
This pauses the scene.

[ > ]
This plays the scene.

[ |> ]
This moves the frame forward once.

[ QUIT ]
This exits the replay mode.
