Not surprisingly, for an FMV adventure, the control scheme is fairly simple.
There's no way to change the controls either. [Buttons without a function're
 omitted from list.]

 D-Pad ---- Controls first-person movement
Start ---- Used in title menu only, really
A-Button - Select button (for menus)
B-Button - Cancel button (for menus)
 X-Button - Open menu
Z-Button - Hold to open memory menu for (disc-specific) scene playback

The first disc takes place in the village of Misty Town, and since movement
is comprised entirely of FMVs, it can be rather confusing for first-time
players. So, here's a map of all the landmarks we'll be visiting.

Our protagonist Fred starts out at point A, the town jail. Also note that the
items in this game aren't named, so I'm making them up for reference's sake.

ESCAPING THE "NUT FARM"
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
 • Keep trying to open the door until Anthony gives you the CELL KEY
 • Use the CELL KEY from the item menu to open the door
 • After a scene, Fred appears at point O, the well's alley

NOTE: Most places are closed at the moment, so there's little exploration
to be done. If you visit the windmill or forest, though, there'll be an
   additional scene (both are missable).

 • Visit the forest and take the SILVER KEY from a tree sap box
 • Visit the inn for a scene, and get the [Matches] by the stairway rope
 • Approach the town exit to automatically visit Lord Gordon's estate
 • View Lord Gordon's estate's entrance for another (optional) scene

WANDERING
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
There's no leads for Fred to go on, so it's time for some exploration. A few
establishments are now available, too. If you already visited some places,
try visiting 'em again -- Jade (that greaser punk) will often appear and give
 a remark about the location.

 • Forest: check the 2nd (locked) sap box to learn it belongs to Anthony
 • Doctor Morse: learn he Gordon's personal physician and sees no one else
 • Clockmaker: Talk with Mac to learn he likes "good timepieces"
 • Street: (after speaking with Mac) Jade says the Doc has a nice watch
 • Cemetary: view the large gravestone to learn it has no flowers
 • Flower Shop: check the right-side planter and Rose lets Fred have a FLOWER
 • Cemetary: place the FLOWER on the grave, leading to a meeting with Gray
 • Gray's House: Visit the back room for a scene, re-enter main room
 • Gray's House: Check the bookshelf's pot for the WINDMILL KEY
 •

SEARCHING FOR THE CITY OF MOONS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Gray's parting words let Fred know the local superstition of using flour to
find the fabled city. This starts a rather long section on collecting the
 items needed to locate it.

 • Windmill: enter with WINDMILL KEY, inspect LADDER thrice to obtain it
 • Windmill: Pull interior lever and (upon exiting) view scene with Zaboo
 • Barroom: Obtain the LANTERN from behind the counter
 • Anthony's House: Inspect back-room bookshelf to get the BOOK behind it
 • Anthony's House: Insert the BOOK into the other shelf to get ANTHONY'S KEY

NOTE: You can now use the house's back door for quick access to the well's
alley. If you tried this earlier, it wouldn't have been doable.

 • Forest: Use ANTHONY'S KEY on the locked box to get TREE SAP
 • Forest: (after getting sap) Anthony remarks sap makes plants grow fast
 • Flower Shop: Get info on City of Moons from Rose
 • Well: Inspect the well for a scene with Hal
 • Inn: Approach the stairway for a scene with Hannah
 • Doctor Morse: learn he's looking for a rare herb for Gordon's medicine
 • Doctor Morse: Inspect book on table to see illustration of the herb
 • Jail: Collect the HERB to the left of the jail's entrance
 • Doctor Morse: Give him the HERB, obtain POCKETWATCH on way out
 • Clockmaker: Trade POCKETWATCH for the OIL (he calls it "fresh soil"...)
 • Doctor Morse: Learn a hidden spring nearby is used to locate the City
 • Barroom: Enter and exit for scene with Hannah involving ruins 'neath a well
 • Forest: Enter and exit for scene with Anthony, who notes the wind's started

NOTE: The above scene requires pulling the windmill's lever, in addition to
         the others!!

 • Windmill: collect the FLOUR from the lower cabinet
 • Gray's House: Short scene (can't re-enter for awhile)
 • Flower Shop: inspect left-hand planters for a scene (well's run dry!)
 • Clockmaker: there'll be a scene in front of his door
 • Flower Shop: try to enter to learn "crimson earth" is needed to enter City
 • Doctor Morse: ask about crimson earth
 • Inn: ask about crimson earth
 • Clockmaker: ask about crimson earth to learn it's a paint ingredient
 • Burnt House: inspect painting to get PAINT TUBE, then use the PAINT TUBE
on the fireplace's silver chalice. Finally, use the MATCHES on the chalice
   to get CRIMSON EARTH

ENTERING THE CITY
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
At this point, one can finally finish the first disc, having collected the
 items required.

 • Well: Use LADDER, LANTERN, SILVER KEY, SAP, OIL, FLOUR, then finally the
CRIMSON EARTH. Lacking a crucial ingredient? Don't worry, y'can exit out
   the well like nothing's happened.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Well, here we are -- the City of Moons. Unfortunately, proceeding around is
harder than Misty Town. To boot, all items except the Diary have been removed,
so Fred has a fresh start. It need not be said that this place is confusing
as heck, and even with a map, it's easy to get disoriented. Besides using the
map, remember that paintings are one-way teleporters, and the series always
ends up back at the starting point.

COLLECTING ITEMS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Alright, it pays to be meticulous about this, because, as said, getting
disoriented is par for the course. Refer to the map when y'need, because a
lot of the places have few landmarks, and some even have similar color
 schemes...

 • Walk through the painting to the first tower (paintings are always one-way)
 • Watch scene with Rae (spirit lady), then get the SILVER KEY
 • Go clockwise to the Silver Tower
 • Speak with Dr. Morse to learn he's trapped in a room
 • Approach the door again to learn Morse will die if let out right now

NOTE: The SILVER KEY opens the door, if you want the bratty guy to croak!

 • Go upstairs in the Silver Tower and take the painting to the Purple Tower
 • Take the FEATHERS from the nearby box, learning they're for flying in wind
 • Take next painting and get the PERFUME from the vanity
 • Use next painting to return to Silver Tower, then visit Dark-Blue Tower
 • Obtain BRACELET OF LIFE from third-floor box
 • Obtain WINDUP KEY from jar on lower floor
 • Use painting to reach Water Tower
 • Use painting to reach Earth Tower
 • Obtain AXE from case, speak to Mac, then save him via the BRACELET OF LIFE

NOTE: You can use the Axe on Mac to kill him, but who wants that?

 • Use AXE on door and obtain the RED KEY from the creepy girl painting
 • Use painting to revisit the Dark-Blue Tower
 • Walk through Water and Purple Towers to reach Earth Tower
 • Go upstairs to watch Jade "cut a rug"...haha...use PERFUME to cross carpet
 • On roof, use RED KEY to unlock the red butterfly from its shrine
 • Exit current location and visit Light-Blue Tower
 • Obtain the SEEDS and HEXAGONAL MIRROR from the ground-floor rooms
 • Continue on to Wind Tower
 • Take ladder down to the abyss, and use FEATHERS to reach next platform
 • Speak to Rose and Hal, then give them some FEATHERS so they can escape
 • Obtain the GREEN KEY from the brazier; use FEATHERS to escape like before

NOTE: If you escape the room and don't give the other feathers to Rose/Hal,
they'll end up dying in a freefall at this point! Also, pay attention
         to the music Fred hears!

 • Use the painting to arrive at Light-Blue Tower; return to Wind Tower
 • Go upstairs to musicbox room -- SAVE here to avoid frustration
 • Use WINDUP KEY on musicbox that matches melody Fred heard while plummeting

NOTE: If you get it wrong -- and y'probably will -- just reload the game
and try again. There's only four boxes. The correct box is evident
as a small cutscene plays while pulling away from the box. If you
pick the wrong box and choose not to reload, Fred must redo the dive
part in the abyss and try again. It's a no-brainer, really.

 • Choosing correctly earns the IRON KEY that opens the door to the roof
 • Use GREEN KEY on butterfly altar to free the little guy
 • Continue to the Red Tower, where we started before

SECOND CYCLE
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Just by being meticulous, one should have done most of the annoying parts
and already freed half the butterflies. Now what's left is using the items
collected to rescue the other folks.

 • Revisit the Silver Tower, where Morse is, and go upstairs
 • Use paintings to return to the vanity room, where the PERFUME was gotten
 • Insert the HEXAGONAL MIRROR into the slot to obtain the GEMSTONE
 • Return to Silver Tower
 • Talk with Doctor Morse and give him the GEMSTONE
 • Use the SILVER KEY to unlock Doctor Morse, sending him on his way
 • Obtain the GOLD KEY from Morse's chamber
 • Use the GOLD KEY on the Silver Tower's roof to unlock a butterfly
 • Continue to Water Tower, and go downstairs; try the door for a scene
 • Consume one of the SEEDS to reach Hannah's cell
 • Give Hannah one of the SEEDS as well
 • Unlock the cell via the pull switch nearby

NOTE: Hannah dies at this point if she lacks an illusion-dispelling seed!

 • Either way, Fred obtains the BLUE KEY, which should be the last one we need
 • Backtrack to Dark-Blue Tower and take the painting teleporter to Water Tower
 • Go upstairs and use the BLUE KEY to release the final butterfly

THE FINALE
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
With all butterflies released, it's time to visit the Tower of Judgment in
 the map's center.

 • Visit Dark-Blue Tower
 • Go upstairs and take path to the map's center; a scene will play
 • A battle will ensue; pick AXE each of the three times
 • THE END!

There'll be some scenes and then the ending will play, where Fred revisits
Misty Town. He can see the villagers he saved in some interesting scenes --
it'll all make sense when witnessed (don't wanna spoil anything!)

III. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [FAQZ]
_______________________________________________________________________________
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
[Q] - Hey, you got the order wrong!
[A] - Most events can be done in any order, with a few "event triggers" that
have a certain order. Email me if there's something truly wrong, though,
      of course.

[Q] - Why can't I pick Morse's herb?
[A] - It must be the right time, i.e. the doctor has mentioned he's looking
for a specimen and Fred looked at the botany book to find what it looks
      like.

[Q] - Why can't I get the flour?
[A] - The flour can only be obtained after Anthony remarks (in the forest) the
wind has started, and even then, there's other scenes to witness. Note
that unless Fred pulled the windmill lever, even with the other scenes
      Anthony won't appear!

[Q] - How do I save the villagers in the City of Moons?
[A] - Mac is saved by the Bracelet of Life; Morse is saved by the Gemstone;
Hal and Rose need a Feather to escape their cell; Hannah requires a Seed
to dispel the deadly illusion. Gordon, Zaboo, Jade, Anthony, and Gray's
actions can't be impacted by Fred's doings.
