In 2006, the Netherlands launched a promotion for a new PSP model by having an angry white woman, dressed in white, grabbing a defiant black woman's face. The tagline ominously read, "Playstation Portable White is coming". While this was intended to show a difference between the handheld's available colors, it was soundly derided as tone-deaf and racist, causing Sony to pull the ad campaign.
To promote the PSP in urban environments, Sony hired graffiti artists (and compensated participating building owners) to spray paint images of kids playing the handheld on their exteriors. The campaign was roundly mocked by critics, and much of the PSP-related graffiti was, in turn, tampered with by other graffiti artists.
