While hiding from the humvee in Pittsburgh, Joel and Ellie take refuge in an Irish pub. This area is based off a similar pub in Uncharted 3, and its name (O'Sullivans) is a reference to Sully, a character in that game.
Tess, Joel's confidant and ally, was originally intended to be the main villain, and would've stalked him and Ellie across the country. This concept was later abandoned, with Neil Druckmann calling it a "weird thing we stuck in the story for the sake of having this antagonist".
In the "Left Behind" side story, once you get to the arcade head toward the back corner to find a Jak X: Combat Racing arcade cabinet. You can also interact with it to earn a secret trophy.
Ellie: What did the mermaid wear to her math class?
Ellie: An algae bra.
Connection to Other Media
The "Master of Unlocking" trophy's name is a reference to Barry Burton's awkwardly iconic line in the original Resident Evil game ("Jill, here's a lockpick. It might come in handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.").
In Pittsburgh, Ellie can stop in front of an Endless 18 store and comment on the supermodel poster, musing "I thought you had food in your time?" Endless 18 is a parody of the Forever 21 brand.
Ish, the man mentioned numerous times during the Suburbs chapter, is a reference to Isherwood Williams, protagonist of Earth Abides (1949). That novel also takes place in post-apocalyptic times.
Once you get to Pittsburg and meet Sam and Henry, check out the shelves in the back of the toy store. You'll find Uncharted and Jak and Daxter board games.
