Walkthrough / Before You Start
Mission 16: Diverging Point - Dante
| You're going to be with Dante for a little bit, so feel free to buy as much as you like for him over the next few missions. |
Surprise! This mission starts at the mouth of another giant hole in the ground. You can descend slowly by going around the outside to collect the orbs on the way down or drop through the middle.
At the bottom, go through the door directly ahead to get in a fight with three Scudo Angelos and a Proto Angelo. You've faced this kind of battle with Dante before, so take the time to get your sea legs back on these guys and make sure to use the entire arena. After you kill a Scudo, a Baphomet will join the battle, but you've got a lot of room to chase him down and take him out without the others bothering you.
Once the door opens, proceed lower. Follow around the outside for a little bit until you come to a nook in the side with a Gold Orb in it. After that, feel free to drop to the bottom. At the bottom, you'll drop into an arena where you'll be attacked by two Hellbats. Take them out slowly until the Behemoth and then burst them to do a huge amount of damage to the Behemoth. Once they are gone and he's badly wounded, you'll be on the verge of victory. Walk to the door but don't drop off the ledge just yet.
The True Diverging Point
| The next section is pretty complicated. There are two paths ahead. The two paths both have Orb Fragments to collect but you can't get them all in one run. You have the choice of pursuing each path in separate runs or to use the checkpoint function to come back to this point to go down the other path. The two paths will be written in sequence, but I'll use links so you can jump around as needed. |
It's time to make a choice.
- Path 1 will drop straight down from here to find a Secret Mission (with reward) and a Purple Orb Fragment.
- Path 2 will take you across to this gap and drop you down to collect a Blue Orb Fragment
Path 1
To get this orb fragment and secret mission, you'll need to be at the True Diverging Point, whether you just arrived here on your first pass, restarted from the Checkpoint (pause menu) or are replaying the mission.
From here, drop down a level. At the beginning, go down slowly and you can find a Red Empusa scurrying about. Kill it and then drop to the bottom. At the bottom, you'll get into a battle with two Chaos and a Fury. If you have DT to spare (especially Sin DT), use that up and take out the two Chaos quickly so you can focus your entire attention on the Fury. Remember to charge up your blade formation with Swordmaster to help deal with the Fury.
With the enemies defeated, drop through the large hole onto the platform below. Find the platform just below this one to the left and drop onto that as well.
REMEMBER THIS PLATFORM
Purple Orb Fragment
Break the Red Crystal and then face the center of the room. Look down to the left to find another platform close by. Drop down onto that and then reverse directions. Below you, you'll see Purple Orb Fragment #8 on a tiny ledge. Jump to it to claim it. If you've been keeping up with your Purple Orb Fragments and purchased all of the Purple Orbs from the store, this will unlock the achievement The Devil's Own.
Secret Mission 12
At this point, you have two options. You can either reload the checkpoint from the pause menu or, if you've learned Highside for Cavaliere, you can climb back up to that platform I told you to remember earlier, but it's difficult (though the worst that can happen is that you just reload the checkpoint).
To Climb up, equip the Cavaliere and switch to Trickster. Jump up and then perform Highsides three times (R1/RB + Back + Triangle/Y). At the top of the third one, you could probably just dash to the right and be fine, but you can also wall jump for extra security if you like.
Repeat this process at the next platform and dash left this time to return to the platform you were on earlier that had the Red Crystal.
Turn and face the center once again. On the far side will be a ledge with a Large Red Crystal. Use a Stinger and then a Trickster dash to get across the gap. Break the two Red Crystals hanging from the ceiling before heading through.
In the next room, jump to the ledge across from you, turn around and look down. You'll see a small platform with an alcove. Jump to that ledge and walk into the alcove. Turn around and look up to find the sigil for Secret Mission 12.
| Secret Mission 12: Collect a set amount of Red Orbs |
The trick is simple -- you have a simple Empusa. What you may not know is that regular Empusa can become a proto-Red Empusa. There are two pools of blood on the sides of this arena. Pick one and walk over to it. Stand on the other side of it to try to lure the Empusa over. If it freaks out and rushes over, you're probably good. Let it drink up the blood and it will turn into a Red Empusa. At this point, simply killing the Red Empusa is probably worth 400 Red Orbs without even trying. Now we're going to hit it with Dr. Faust and kill it slowly. Equip Dr. Faust and the Gunslinger Style. With these equipped, target the Empusa and hit the O/B over and over. Dante will throw his hat in a circle. The first time will put the hat on the enemy. Each time after that will cause it to drop orbs for the hat AND because it's a Red Empusa. As far as I'm aware, this is the weakest attack available allowing for as many hits as possible. with a level 3 Dr. Faust, I was getting somewhere in the vicinity of 1500 Red Orbs doing this, and all you have to do is be patient and hit a single button a few times. |
Completing this mission will earn you Blue Orb Fragment #30 and the Secrets Exposed achievement if you've finished the prior secret missions as well.
At this point, if you didn't collect the blue orb fragment from the other path, continue ahead. Otherwise, proceed to The Final Descent.
Blue Orb Fragment #31
To get this orb fragment, you'll need to be at the True Diverging Point, whether you just arrived here on your first pass, restarted from the Checkpoint (pause menu) or are replaying the mission.
From the top of this pit, notice the platform about halfway across on the right, and then the ledge on the far side. Hop to this platform on the right and then jump to the ledge. Use Air Hike, the Trickster air-dash (O/B in the air) or Stinger (must be purchased) with your sword to cross the distance. Break the two Red Crystals here and then continue through the tunnel.
When you come out the other side, drop to the bottom of the pit. Go through the hole at the bottom to enter an arena where you'll be attacked by two Behemoths. If you have Sin DT powered up, destroying these two with it is particularly rewarding.
With them down, drop into the hole beyond and walk to the ledge in front of you. From the ledge, use Stinger to launch across and then use the Trickster air-dash to get the rest of the way over. Make sure to jump off the wall if you don't quite stick the landing. When you get on the ledge, you can collect Blue Orb Fragment #31.
With this in hand, you can go back to Path 1 to pursue the other collectibles in this level, or you can continue on to proceed to the end of the level.
The Final Descent
From whichever path you ended up following, continue downward and collect whatever orbs you like on the way. Beware, some enemies may spawn on the paths on the way down, including Death Scissors and Hellbats.
You'll know you're reaching the bottom when you start to see frost/snow on the ground. When you hit this point, you'll enter a battle with a Caina, an Antenora, and a Judecca. Remember to start with the Judecca and get it teleporting before bouncing to the other enemies. If you need to, run up the ramp nearby to get a little bit of safe distance from your enemies.
After they are dead, drop through the recently unsealed hole into the depths of the frozen wastes. When you land, a much more difficult battle will unfold against two Nobodies and a Lusachia. Both types of enemies can be dangerous if left unattended. In this case, pursue the Nobodies until the Lusachia arrives and starts casting a spell on you. Once the purple energy starts to collect, immediately find it and beat it until it's stunned.
Once they are defeated continue downward, grabbing Red Orbs on the way. Drop into the huge hole at the end to find a Divinity Statue. Upgrades to your Devil Trigger is good and I would start buying the last of the Purple and Blue Orbs if you don't have them all. Finally, take whatever moves give you horizontal mobility or help with your Sword Formation. When you're done shopping, drop through the hole just to the right of the statue.
| Boss: King Cerberus |
Note: There is a rather odd achievement called Obedience Training which has an unusual description. It reads, "Go on the offensive without relying on brute force in the Mission 16 boss battle." I unlocked it about 1/3 of the way through the fight and am not sure how. I'd only done used Kalina Ann a couple of times, DSD, Sin DT, and a few strikes of Sword Formation from Swordmaster. The most likely thing to me seems the Sword Formation based on timing and that it is the least brute force style attack I performed. Phase 1 - FireChomp (Fire Only) - Cerberus will wind up and then lunge forward for a bite. A simple side-dodge as this approaches should be enough to avoid the damage, but watch for a follow-up swipe. Swipe - When close in, Cerberus may swipe with one of its front paws. Like the Chomp, it's decently fast but can be dodge with just a simple jump. Sometimes the first can be followed by a second, so don't get too distracted. Stomp - Instead of a low swipe, Cerberus will bring its front paw up and swipe it straight down. A simple dodge should be sufficient, but be careful of a potential follow-up. Phase 2 - Ice (<66% Health)
Shards - The center Cerberus head will breathe snow upwards at the ceiling which will cause ice shards to fall from the sky. Just keep moving and this should easily miss. Blast - The Cerberus will coil up before the center head comes down. When it reaches the ground, it will breathe a large plume of freezing air towards you across the ground, which will expand as it moves outwards. Jump over it or hop onto one of the platforms in the arena to avoid it. Phase 3 - Electric (<33% Health)
OffenseIn some ways, King Cerberus is an easy enemy. Just to the side of its heads, it doesn't have a lot of defense or offense, so if you can get close to it, this is generally a pretty safe angle so long as you watch for a Roar. Use Kalina Ann with Gunslinger to fire several homing missiles when the Cerberus gets too far away. You may want something faster for dealing with the Sparks attack. Most of the Fire and Ice attacks can be dodged reliably as long as you don't get too absorbed in your attack. Build up your Sin DT, get on the side of Cerberus, and tear it to pieces. As long as you start next to the Cerberus (you're immune during the transformation), you can knock off 40-50% of its health bar AND stun it at the same time, which is usually good for another 10% after transforming back. |

At first, this may seem impossible. It's potentially the easiest Secret Mission in the game. Note that you may have to increase the level of Dr. Faust up to level 2 or 3 to make this work, but this strategy may actually work even at level 1 based on my tests.
King Cerberus can be knocked out pretty quickly with Dante's overwhelming power, but it also does a ton of damage and it's going to be important to watch your health bar.
Roar - Cerberus will pause for several seconds and simply wriggle back and forth while looking downward. When it starts glowing, it's about to release a large blast. When it does, it will swap between currently available phases. If you're too close, the blast will cause damage.
Sparks - The left head will sort of make a sneezing animation before releasing balls of electricity into the air. These will move slowly towards you and can be targeted. You can shoot them out of the air, but it's probably easier to just avoid them. The only problem is that they serve as both a weapon and a pseudo-shield.
