Walkthrough / Before You Start
Mission 12: Yamato
At the very start of the mission, you'll be attacked by two waves of three Caina each giving you a great opportunity to practice with your new toy, the Cavaliere. In particular, practice holding an attack on your enemy to prolong the attack and stun-lock the enemy.
With these enemies destroyed, continue into the tunnel ahead. The path will end up blocked by a lattice structure with a Baphomet inside. It will be a sitting duck in there, so hit it with a single attack and hold it to deal massive damage and break the barrier at the same time.
In the next room, you'll be confronted by a Chaos. Use the lattice structures as barriers if it starts to charge up. It won't stop it, but it will give you just a bit more time. Once this first enemy is defeated, a Riot and Chaos will attack. This is a pretty big shift because the biggest weakness of the Cavaliere is how vulnerable you are while using it. Getting used to planning ahead and dropping an attack to evade down the line is a crucial skill.
Bloody Puzzles
Continue into the next section of tunnel and grab the 4 Red Crystals and the Green Crystal on the way. This will take you to a courtyard with a fountain in the middle. There are Red and White Cyrstals on the left next to a Qliphoth Root waiting for a Nidhogg. At the back left of the room will be stairs with another Qliphoth root. We'll be going for this instead of the first one. Next to the door you originally came through will be some rubble you can climb to get to the next floor up.
Re-enter the building from this ledge and break the Red Crystal just inside. At the back of the next room (through the hole) will be the Nidhogg Hatchling you're looking for. Return to the fountain area and head for those stairs in the back left of the room. Use the Hatchling on the root to get by.
In the next room, don't break the lattice barriers. When you try to leave, you'll be attacked. The first wave will be two Caina and shouldn't pose much of a threat, but remember you need to drop your attacks early so you can evade in time.
The next wave will come with an Antenora and three Caina, but the Antenora will spawn in one of the lattices. As before with the Baphomet, try to hit it with a long Cavaliere attack while it's trapped. Another Antenora and two more Caina will spawn before the end. If you can trap the enemies in a corner, hit them all with one giant, long swing of the Cavaliere.
Leave the room and head up the ramp, hitting the Red Crystal on the way up and collecting Purple Orb Fragment #6 at the top. Proceed past the fragment into a busted street. Hit the two Red Crystals by the main door and turn right. On the path, get the Red Crystal hanging from the wall on the right and then the Green Crystal behind the white van on the left.
This path will come to a huge open arena where you'll meet what is likely the most difficult enemy in the game: the Fury.
| New Enemy: Fury - 2500 Health |
Unfortunately, this fight will be pretty scrappy. The best strategy for dealing with them isn't available until after this mission. The following is, if you can believe it, the short version. If you need further help, check the Bestiary section on Furies. I would put it here, but it would totally disrupt this level guide. What makes this enemy so difficult is that it teleports just about everywhere. As if to make things more frustrating, there are points where it is clearly gloating (such as when it walks slowly with its shoulders thrown back) where it seems solid, but it will take no damage, even if you manage to "land" a hit. It can still perform basic swings, but it's very rare. The Hard WayWhen it starts teleporting around, sometimes you can see the streaks behind it. If so, that's a huge advantage and make sure you dodge when it gets close. Otherwise, shy of a couple of tricks, wait a split second after it vanishes and then dodge to the side. If you see it hover in mid-air before it's large blade comes out, you'll need to dodge as soon as it moves forward. This seems pretty risky and unreliable, doesn't it? If you can pull it off, you can score some good hits, but if you can do that, you probably don't need this guide. The Easier WaysYou have two other main options right now. The first technique is to use Royal Guard to block incoming attacks (uses DT for every hit) and try to dodge the final attack (the aforementioned hovering attack). This will give you a chance to counterattack and recover some DT. The second is to use Gunslinger and the Shotgun. If you hit O/B, not matter where you are, Dante performs the Fireworks attack. He'll swing his shotgun around him while shooting in all four directions. You can spam this on the ground or mid-air. It doesn't use DT and it does damage, but it's much less reliable in protecting you. |
That single enemy may not have been enough to take you down, but almost certainly was a huge irritation, but congrats on dealing with one of the most unpredictable enemies in the game!
After defeating it, continue through the big hole ahead. Grab the Red and Green Crystals right by the door and then the Red Crystal at the bend. Kill the two Tentacles here. There are three doorways here, but the first one to the right just returns back to the courtyard. The ramp next to it is just a tease.
Take the path to the left to enter a pretty big fight with a Caina, an Antenora, a Behemoth, and a Riot Nest. That's a lot of danger to ignore in this small room, but blast the heck out of the Nest because you've already got enough trouble on your hands. From there, work up the food chain as usual. With the Behemoth in this small space, get airborne and stay there as much as possible. When it's just the Behemoth remaining, have fun with Cavaliere!
Leave through the newly opened doorway and collect the Green Crystal. Continue forward and break the Blood Clot on the left. Once it's destroyed and the blood flows forth, run through the hole that the clot was plugging up.
Grab the two Red Crystals hanging from the titled lamppost and the White Crystal beneath them. Round the corner to the left and break the Large Red Crystal. Head back to the hole you came through and look up to find a small gap with a Red Crystal in it. Go up and break it. In the small room beyond, claim two more Red Crystals and Blue Orb Fragment #23.
Return back the way you came, drop down, and take the door immediately to your right to get into another battle. This one will be two Baphomet and a Chaos. Focus on the Baphomets and break the lattice. With any luck, the Chaos will get stuck in one when it respawns. After you kill the first Baphomet, another Chaos will spawn. Finish the other Baphomet before tackling the two Chaos and you'll minimize how many types of attacks you'll need to avoid.
When the battle ends, go through the large doorway that was just opened and crack the Blood Clot beyond. As with last time, run through the hole that was plugged up to get a Nidhogg Hatchling. Leave this room and take a left to follow the path the blood was taking. This will end over the courtyard and net you a Gold Orb. Jump off and use the Hatchling on that first Qliphoth root.
In the next hallway, break the Red Crystal. Continue forward and you'll encounter five Empusa. Once they're eliminated, an Empusa Queen will appear. If you can get a good position, it's a pretty solid target for some extended attacks from Cavaliere. Once it's dead, go into the large tunnel and keep going forward. It will end in a room with two Red Crystals.
Don't dawdle here as two Baphomets will spawn behind you and the lattice can trap you in. Break out and make for the two enemies quickly so this fight doesn't stay one-sided. Take the right fork and kill the Tentacles in the tunnel while claiming two Red Crystals, one on each wall.
In the room at the top, you'll find White and Red Crystals. Follow the grooves in the ground away from the gargoyle to find the last Blood Clot. Unlike the previous clots, skip this hole and just head back to the courtyard via the gargoyle. When you get there, drop through the hole that the statue revealed.
Go down the stairs and break the two Red Crystals in the archway. When you come out the other side, climb the rubble to the top and turn around. You can either cross by using the Trickster style's mid-air dash (O/B in mid-air) or use Stinger (R1/RB + Forward + Triangle/Y) to launch yourself off of the ledge and then wall jump onto the platform. Once there, turn around to find the sigil for Secret Mission 09.
The concept of the mission is pretty simple, but it can be a little tricky to execute. Enemy Step and Air Hike are very helpful, and the Highside ability for Cavaliere is crucial. Start the mission by targeting the Pyrobat. Targeting the Antenora will cause trouble with your inputs as he crosses under you. Jump into the air and start performing Highside (R1/RB + Back + Triangle/Y) while in mid-air. If you nail your timing, you'll start climbing upward. Eventually, you'll still start to drift down, at which point you can use Air Hike or Enemy Step (on the Antenora) to prolong your airtime. And if you end up hitting the Antenora with Highside, remember that you can hold down that attack button to stretch the attack. It will likely take a little practice to get it right, but with some practice, you can probably stay in the air for 20 seconds or more.

Finishing this secret mission will earn you Blue Orb Fragment #24.
Jump back across the gap and start making your way up the rocks while claiming the two Red Crystals and a Green Crystal on the way. Ahead, on the right, will be a Divinity Statue for you to juice up right next to a Red Crystal. Stock up on Orbs and movement abilities and definitely make sure you've purchased Trigger Heart for the next fight. Grab the White Crystal by the mouth of the cave on your way out.
When you exit, turn right and make your way into the ruined house. After the cutscene, it'll be time to get serious.
Winning this battle will earn you The Qliphoth achievement.

Phase 0 - WTF Just Happened?
Homing Tendril - He'll throw out his left hand straight ahead and one tendril will light up and then arc toward you. If it hits you, several more tendrils will shoot out quickly to hit you. Run in the same direction as it and slightly towards Urizen to avoid the angle of attack should the Homing Tendril hit you.
