Walkthrough / Before You Start

Mission 08: Demon King

Return to the Qliphoth

Walk forward and grab the Red Crystal hanging from the wall on the left. As you run further forward, you'll come across a large room. You'll be able to see enemies spawning into it from a distance, but let that distract you from the Red Crystal hanging from the corner of a dilapidated building to your right as you enter the room.

In the room, you'll encounter three Empusa. You should be able to wipe the floor with them, but you may want to group them together first to max out your style ranking.

Make sure to hit the Red Crystal on the right when you leave this area. Ahead, you'll come across two more Empusa at the bend. Continue on to the next arena where you'll fight three Riots. Thankfully they have no nest, but they'll get a Green Empusa and another Riot as reinforcements as the battle goes on. There's a lot of room to work with so make sure to use Streak and Wire Snatch to manipulate the space around you.

Ground Floor - Receiving

Leave past the just destroyed barrier and hit the Green Crystal on the way before coming to a lava elevator. Grab the Gerbera on the way up the platform on the left. Try to save the Gerbera for later, Wait for a platform to form (it'll make a sound) and jump on. Hop off at the first floor on the left for a Red Crystal before hopping back on and getting off at the top on the right side. Break the Red Crystal here before continuing.

Just before the next room will be a large open corridor. Break the Red Crystal on the left as you enter it and take note of the inactive Grim Grip in the air. There are actually two here, so shoot, pull, shoot, and pull in turn to land yourself on a platform with two Red Crystals. Drop down to continue and take out the four Tentacles as they spawn in your way.

This path will take you to a Bloodstream which acts as an elevator. You just have to walk up to activate it, but you should always check behind it and make sure you're ready because it's a one-way trip. Behind the Bloodstream terminal will be a Rawhide.

Floor 2 - Blood and Baphomets

After coming out of the Bloodstream, you'll be immediately confronted by two Empusa. Deal with them and then turn around to find a Red Crystal. Follow the only path available and watch for a Punch Line on the left side. As you continue, be sure to break the two Red Crystals in the cave. Follow the cave until it drops off, but don't fall into the pit yet -- there are some goodies to collect on the other side.

The easiest and best way to cross the gap is to run towards the edge and repeatedly use Gerbera (O/B while moving forward) to rocket across the gap. It may be possible to use the Streak move as you hit the edge to launch across the gap and use Air Hike to stick the landing if you don't have Gerbera. If all else fails, your last option is to defeat the enemies very quickly. If you do so, it becomes possible to wall jump up to the platform.

Regardless of how you do it, on the other side will be a Large Red Crystal and a Helter Skelter. You can jump into the pit for a few Red Orbs, but it's a one-way trip. If you got here without fighting, I recommend against dropping into this pit. Return to the previous one and drop in for a fight. Doing so gives you far more orbs and style points that you wouldn't otherwise get.

If you are feeling bold and have a Gerbera, before returning to the first pit, use it to launch yourself towards the Red Orbs hovering over the second pit and then immediately press back and use Gerbera again. If you do it right, you can reverse direction with the Gerbera in mid-air and land where you started.

Kill a lot, but not all, of the enemies here so that the platform breaks, which will drop you into another battle with even more enemies. On the platform, you'll start fighting three Caina. After two are defeated, two more Caina drop in. Finally, after they are all gone, three Antenora will appear in the middle of the arena. If you have a Punch Line available, use that to get in a lot of hits without knocking them down. Try to use long combos and bounce them into the air to keep them close for a lot of damage.

If you're lucky, the platform will collapse and you'll enter another fight (your old enemies will disappear). You'll start with four Caina. After the first one dies, an Empusa Queen will appear. You'll want to take out the Caina as quickly as possible so you can focus on coming at the Queen from the right angles.

Leave this room and follow an odd bridge to a tall, round room. Break the Green Crystal on your right as you enter and pick up the Overture as you scale the steps around the room to the Grim Platform at the top. Use this to pull you up to a new hallway. This hallway drops off into the second pit that you encountered beyond the Large Red Crystal earlier. If you can, look around the wall for a Red Crystal. You may be able to reach it with a Gerbera. Drop to the ground after that and collect the Green Crystal at the bottom before taking the only path out.

That hallway will lead to a very large open room with Hell-stalagmite equivalents scattered around the outside. When you enter it, you'll be introduced to your first Baphomet.

New Enemy: Baphomet - 1500 Health

Baphomet isn't too threatening on its own. It's a pretty soft target and he already starts out at a good height for aerial combos.

Baphomet uses ice magic to deal damage and trap you in place. The direct damage tends to be more annoying than dangerous, especially since its attacks have a long charge time. Far more dangerous is when it swirls cold winds around it. Either take it out fast or get away before it unleashes a cold blast that will freeze you in place. This will make you vulnerable to a combo by other enemies.

With that in mind, it's a perfect first target. The ranged attacks and potential for being frozen can quickly and safely be eliminated most of the time. Chase after it and you'll have yourself out of range of most enemies while you take out this squishy target. Do that and you won't have to worry about letting this trickster roam free around the arena while you're dealing with other tougher, more aggressive enemies.

Baphomets are weak enough that you'll probably take this single one out before it has a chance to do much except show you what it looks like when it charges an attack. Unfortunately, this fight escalates quickly with three Riots and another Baphomet joining the fight after the first Baphomet is destroyed. You have a lot of space, so get in the air and take out the Baphomet first. After that, you'll be faced with enemies you've dealt with before and you'll do it with a lot more space than usual.

The just-opened hallway will lead to another Bloodstream, but make sure to get the two Red Crystals on the way and the few Red Orbs behind the Bloodstream terminal.

Floor 3 - Angels & Demons

Like before, the game is going to try and distract you with a shiny object ahead of you, but turn around first to collect the Red Crystal behind you. After that, you can approach the Divinity Statue ahead of you if you would like to do some shopping. You can do here all of the same things you could do with Nico except for nearly be crushed by her van or insulted by her banter.

Make sure to put a Gerbera in your first Breaker slot because you'll need it in a second

Run onto the bridge ahead but be careful not to fall into the pit at the top of the ramp. As before, there's a pit below. Your best option is still to use Gerbera to span the gap. The last one was just practice. If you fail this one, you may want to use the "Last Checkpoint" option in the pause menu (at a cost of 30% of your level end score).

Cross the gap to collect two Red Crystals and Blue Orb Fragment #13. Grab these and you'll have the same choice as you did earlier. You can drop down for an easy time, but heading back to the battle-pit is far more rewarding (we'll do that).

When you drop into the pit, you'll be confronted by three Scudo Angelos. Remember that your goal is to make that shield a non-obstacle. Jump over the Angelos and perform a Split or Wire Snatch to get them off their feet before putting the hurt on them. After the first Angelo falls, another Scudo Angelo will take its place.

When the platform falls, you'll enter a battle with three Scudos and one Proto Angelo. The proto Angelo is a much softer target (though with more health, I think), so go for it first. Whenever you get into a combo, watch for other enemies attacking you while you listen for the clang of a parry. If you hear that sound, immediately dodge to avoid a follow-up attack from the Proto.

After the battle, take the only path out of here and then take a right to find a Red Crystal at the end. Head back to the intersection and head straight through to the Bloodstream. Check around the back for a Red Crystal before hopping in.

Floor 4 - *Top Secret*

Upon landing, grab the Gerbera behind you and then turn to the main path to collect a Red Crystal and Green Crystal by the first bend.

You'll see a lava-vator directly ahead but you'll be attacked on the way. In the next room, you'll be attacked by two Riots who will be followed shortly by two Baphomets. Get a couple hits in on the Riots before the Baphomets appear, but once they get in, take them out. The Baphomets will start limiting the amount of safe space you have to work with by using their freezing cold blast, and in such a small arena, you need every inch you can get. Once those two are taken care of, the Riots should pose little trouble.

Make your way to the next room and hit the Red Crystal on the right side on the way. Climb the platforms on the left to get to the elevator. Take that up to the top and jump off.

When you land on the other end, stop and turn to the middle of the room. You'll see a Red Orb Cluster floating in mid-air and a hole in the wall beyond that. Use Streak to leap off the edge and grab the orbs before using Air Hike or Gerbera to land you in that hole. After you land, walk forward and drop into the room beyond the hole. In here, you'll find two Red Crystals and a Ragtime as well as a Grim Platform and the glowing spot for Secret Mission 05. Turn around and look up at the hole you came through to find the sigil.

Secret Mission 05: Do Not Touch The Ground

Please see Secret Missions section for video.

This secret mission, in concept, is fairly simple, but that makes it hard for me to help because the difficulty comes from execution. You'll need to shoot the Grim Grip ahead of you, latch on to it, fly through the air, and at the apex, shoot the next, and so on. You'll have to get into the timing and understand that there are tricks in the timing intentionally.

The indicator for the apex of your swing is right when Nero releases from the previous grip. That's when you should hit the button, and the time between when you see that and hit the button is roughly how long it takes for him to hit his true apex. From there, lock on to the next grip (just hold the button), shoot, and immediately latch on to the next platform.

Be careful of getting too far into your rhythm, however. A lot of these Grips have a similar pull time. It'll take you roughly the same amount of time from when you latch on to one as when you latch on to the next. It'll be hard to not get into a subconscious rhythm, but it's important not to get too into it because there are a couple of grips that have a slightly different timing, and if you stick with the rhythm instinctively, you'll likely lose too much air or be out of range of the grip and fall.

If you have Air Hike, it's possible to use it to save yourself if things go wrong, but I'd just as well ignore it so that you don't have happen to you what happened to me: I swing on the last grip and instinctively paniced because it felt like I wasn't going to land on the platform, so I tried to use Air Hike to correct it and messed up my landing. All I had to do was not do anything. Doh!

After finishing this mission and collecting Blue Orb Fragment #14, use the Grim Platform to get out of this room. When you're in the hole, look for a Grim Grip floating up and down just to your left. Shoot it and then latch on when it reaches the top to sling yourself to the top of the lava elevator. Destroy the Red Crystal here before continuing up the stairs to the left.

This will put you on a path to the fourth and last Bloodstream elevator. MAKE SURE to check behind this terminal for a tentacle. Kill that and Blue Orb Fragment #15 will appear in front of the Bloodstream terminal. Once you have that, hop in the Bloodstream and make sure to get the Red Crystal behind you when you land.

Floor 5 - The Penthouse

Follow the path on the other end. Hit the Red Crystal as you move forward and watch for the destroyed Phone Booth off to your left. It's going to be just the bottom sitting under a demon street lamp. Use that if you need to do a little shopping. You're in for a hell of a fight, and I would invest in whatever movement options you can afford (Table Hopper for instance).

Once you're done shopping, turn around and run to the end to find two Red Crystals. On the way back, you'll be able to see a platform jutting out of the wall on the right which has a Gerbera on it. Go all the way to the right side and double jump onto the platform to reach it. You may also be able to reach it by using Streak to launch yourself off of the van.

Go up the ramp near the van and you'll fight three Empusa at the top. During the battle, a Green Empusa will also make an appearance. After defeating them, you'll need to drop off the back of the platform, which will put you on a familiar path leading back up toe Urizen's throne. Defeat the Empusa on the way and grab the Green Crystal after you drop off onto the next path. Just before the door, grab the Tomboy on the ground.

Urizen - Round 2: Fight!

This fight isn't too tough so long as you pay attention to Urizen's tells. The first section doesn't really have phases and you won't have to watch out for too many tricks. Oh, and make sure you win this time. If you lose, you'll have to use Orbs to get you back in the fight.

Phase 1

The only target during this phase is the crystal that puts itself between you and Urizen anyway. You'll still have to get close, but the only obstacle to dealing damage is you avoiding damage. Get close and stay on the ground when you can with the notable exception being avoiding attacks. The goal is to destroy the crystal which has its own health separate from Urizen.

Purple Rain - A bunch of purple points of light will collect in front of Urizen before streaming into the sky. The ground will become painted with purple light indicating where the beams will fall and where you should avoid. One will always fall on your current spot, so you MUST move.

Meteor - A red sigil appears in front of Urizen before collapsing inward in flames into another sigil. This will quickly transform into a giant ball of fire hurtling at you, so as soon as it collapses, start dodging. A second meteor can immediately follow the first, so it's good to put an extra dodge or two on the end even if you feel safe. This is hard to avoid at close range. It leaves flames on the ground upon impact which blocks an avenue of attack.

SuperBeam - An amped up version of Scream Beam from Artemis. a Purple symbol will appear in front of Urizen's knees and collect energy before releasing an arena long beam. This will sweep from one end to the other and then back, so be ready to jump twice. The best thing to do is to carry your combo into the air. You'll have to judge based on position whether you can stay in the air long enough with your attacks or if you'll need to fall down so you can jump again. If you're not sure, I definitely recommend the latter.

Time Bolt - Same as the Time Bolt from the Elder Geryon battle. Blue energy will collect in front of Urizen before being released. Since it's just Nero, it's much more devastating if it connects, but it also means you know the target and can anticipate it (or even lure the attack to a certain spot). Because of proximity, dodging it can be very difficult, so there's little more you can do than try to get out of the bubble ASAP while anticipating future incoming attacks.

Geyser - Blue energy will collect in the ground before blue geysers shoot up at you for massive damage. This is probably the most damaging attack and has a rather large area as well. You want to run forward or back to avoid this as these geysers usually form a line left and right of you with you in the center. Don't sit on this -- evade as soon as you see it coming.

Porcupine - The crystal will make a screeching sound and its spines will expand a little while it collects energy. It will shrink in, but once the screeching stops, it will immediately expand again, doing damage and pushing you away. It usually (but not always) does this if you manage to successfully get in a combo or two without pause. Just be ready for it after a couple of combos, and as soon as you hear the sound, either drop to the ground (if you're in the air) or backflip to avoid.

Shockwave - "You've shown aggressiveness." Urizen will lift his right hand into the air and then wave it across his body. All this does is push you back without causing damage or disrupting your style. Keep a charged shot from Blue Rose handy to keep your style going while you re-close the distance.

Phase 2

I won't go into too much detail here. As with your first fight against Urizen, you're expected to lose this (and I'm not actually sure you can even win it). If you manage to destroy the crystal again, you'll be able to do damage to Urizen, but he'll summon another Crystal before too long. Might as well take this as a chance to practice. Use the tentacles as Green Orb dispensers if need be.

Tentacle - A large tentacle will move slowly towards you from Urizen while glowing a little. If this hits you, several tentacles will shoot out from Urizen doing damage. If it misses you, it will still loop back around (potentially off-camera) and try to hit you again. Very hard to dodge the second set of tentacles, but if you are moving in the same direction as the first tentacle when it hits you, it could be possible to outrun the follow-up attack.

Once you reach the results page, you'll unlock the Light in the Darkness achievement.
