Walkthrough / Before You Start

Mission 04: V

Introducing V

V is a very different play style from Nero and (if you’ve played previous games) Dante. The button inputs still correspond in a way that makes sense, but the execution of the moves is very different. Keep in mind that any abilities that require relative movement (ie. Back on left stick) are relative to V’s position, not the position of the companion.

For instance, Triangle/Y is still used for melee attacks, Square/X is still ranged, O/B is still character-specific abilities. V doesn’t attack directly, however, relying on his demonic companions to do that for him. Shadow will execute your melee attacks while Griffon will perform ranged attacks. Neither of them can kill enemies on their own, so your O/B is used for V to execute weakened demons (or to control Nightmare, but more on that later). Enemies look ashen and an orange circle appears around them (when targeted). Make sure you execute them before the circle counts all the way down or they’ll recover some strength.

It gets even more unusual because V’s mobility is fairly limited, and so he must rely on his companions to perform certain actions. For instance, if you want to double jump, Griffon will lift V into the air for the second jump, and if you want to dodge, Shadow will meld into the ground and slide V out of harm’s way.

These actions have positives and negatives. If you’ve been charging a ranged attack with Griffin and perform a double jump, he’ll lose his charge when he comes and helps you. That’s not great.

However, Griffon and Shadow can also take damage, and if they take too much, they’ll have to rest before they can join back in. If Shadow is in danger and needs to evade, V can execute a side dodge and Shadow will move from wherever he is to V, almost guaranteeing he won’t get hit.

Things will get a little more complicated later on, but we’ll cover that when we get there. For now, keep these things in mind.

Controls are saved on a per-character basis. Because of V’s playstyle, I recommend changing the “auto-attack” function to the D-Pad and mapping Griffon to the R2/LT button. This will allow you to unleash an endless barrage of charged attacks from Griffon without compromising your ability to perform combos with Shadow. Check our section on Controls for more, but be warned that there are spoilers because additional controls are unlocked throughout the story.

Shopping

At the moment, there’s not much you can shop for. V’s entire move catalog at the shop is locked. The only thing you can buy is items. With that said, V burns through Devil Trigger like crazy, so buying a Purple Orb or two probably isn’t such a bad idea.

Back Alley

Combat will begin immediately. You’ll be confronted with two Empusa and a Red Empusa. At this point, these enemies probably don’t scare you, so pursue the Red before it escapes, and then practice using shadow on the other two.

With those enemies defeated, another two Empusa will appear for you to practice with Griffon’s ranged attacks and dodge mechanics. Once the enemies are defeated, leave the alley through the back right corner, making sure to hit the Red Crystal next to the dumpster in the alley just beyond.

In the large warehouse beyond, destroy the Red Crystal under the stairs. Go up the stairs and cross the catwalk. On the far side, jump down near the vines on the right to find another Red Crystal. On the left will be a large boiler with a Green Crystal on top. Go out the double doors here.

You’ll be confronted by three Pyrobats. Shadow doesn’t have as much ability in the air yet, but he can still perform a tail-whip by holding back on the left stick and attacking (remember, relative to *V*, not shadow). Use this coupled with Griffon to make quick work of these enemies. When you do, you’ll learn how to perform a Gambit. Lock on to a weakened enemy and press O/B to instantly teleport over to them and execute them.

Make for the recently unblocked path in the corner and take the stairs down. At the bottom, turn right into a small nook for a White Orb. Continue along the path and follow it to a Blood Clot. Destroy it to unblock the ledge to the left and reveal a Large Red Crystal on just around the bend on this path. Destroy the crystal before hopping down.

Flying Hunter Part 2

You may recognize where you are from the last mission, though Nero could never reach this platform. Once you touch down in this shipping area, you’ll be attacked by several Empusa. They won’t last long as you’ll quickly be introduced to your third companion, Nightmare.

Nightmare is autonomous and can’t be defeated, so leave it to its own devices and focus on layering on more damage with Shadow and Griffon. As these enemies fall, some Caina will join the fight. Nightmare probably won’t last long enough to help with these, so you’ll be on your own, but the field should be significantly thinned by this point.

After they are defeated, climb/explore the shipping crates against the wall to collect some Red Orbs. At the top by the corner is a hole in the roofing. Hop up through and explore next to the tree for a Gold Orb. Hop back down and make your way across the crumbled bridge.

On the bridge, you’ll learn how your allies can get stunned by taking too much damage and how you can speed up their recovery by standing next to them. This is called Stalemate and should be avoided at all costs save for losing V himself. Losing one of your companions is *worse* than having one hand tied behind your back because it also limits your movement options.

Further along on the bridge will be a large vine with a Blood Clot. Destroy it to progress. Once the scene plays out, make sure to turn around and grab the Gold Orb behind you.

Follow tracks back towards a building and you’ll find a Nidhogg Hatchling between them. Taking it will trigger a battle with three Pyrobats and two tentacles, which is basically the same as three pyrobats with a couple of Green Orb dispensers. Defeat them and head into the building to collect Purple Orb Fragment #1.

Break the White Crystal in the back left corner of the warehouse, then turn right and go down the narrow flight of stairs. Drop off the catwalk and turn around to find a Red Crystal. Make towards the double doors on the far side and collect the Red Crystal in the back left corner.

Outside, you’ll learn how to use your Devil Trigger energy to amp up Griffon and Shadow. Using the energy in this way is closer to how Devil Trigger normally works. It will power-up your companions, making them tougher and making them hit harder. This uses only a single segment of your bar and can be used so long as you have a bar available. You can activate it on both at the same time.

You’ll also learn to read! Using Read Book will cause V to start reading, which will generate DT energy. Since V isn’t much of a direct combatant and you’ll want to keep him safe anyway, you’ll want to use this command as much as possible. After he starts reading for a second or two, you can stop holding the button and he’ll continue to read so long as it’s not interrupted.

Once the street opens up a little, you’ll be attacked by two Empusa and a Green Empusa. Clean them up and things will escalate quickly. Two Caina and two Antenora. You’re more than a match for these enemies, it just might not feel like the smoothest battle. If things start going sideways, the two dumpsters by the wall can be used to keep you safe as they act as a natural barrier.

Defeat these enemies and then continue up the alley. Make sure to look up frequently as there are a lot of Red Crystals hanging from the walkways above.

At the next open area, you’ll find a Red Crystal to your left and then be three Pyrobats and two Antenora. There’s a ton of space here, so find a comfy corner and start after the Antenora. Normally it’s best to get rid of the smaller enemies first, but they’ll likely get caught in Griffon’s charged attacks, so there’s not much reason to derail the bulk of Shadows damage.

If you are out of Devil Trigger, make sure to hit the White Crystal (below) to get some and then track back to the previous area where you faced the first group of Antenora. There's a giant mural on the wall. Use your DT to summon Nightmare. This will crush the wall and grant you the Backroad achievement. Inside, you'll find a Red Crystal on the first floor as well as Blue Orb Fragment #8 and a White Crystal on the second floor. In the hall beyond, you'll find a Red Crystal and a Green Crystal. Go out into the alley to find a Nidhogg Hatchling which will initiate a small, staggered encounter with five Pyrobats and two Green Empusa. Kill them and make sure to grab the Green Orb and Red Crystal as you climb the platforms to get over the gate. This will put you back on the main path.

Continue along the road and watch for a White Crystal in a corner on the left. Remember to nab the three Red Crystals hanging above you as you walk up the next street. At the next intersection, crack the Red Crystal and use that Nidhogg Hatchling from forever ago. In the small alcove beyond will be another Red Crystal and Blue Orb Fragment #9. Use the second Nidhogg Hatchling to open the section to your left. Claim the Red Orbs on the way up the stairs. In the next room, jump up a level and crush the Red Crystal by the window. Look out the broken window to line up Secret Mission 03.

Secret Mission 03 - Collect all of the Red Orbs.

Please see Secret Missions section for video.

Make sure you have Quickplay learned from the Abilities section because you're going to need to collect some Red Orbs pretty fast for this secret mission.

From the start, head left, and follow the corridor of bookcases to collect 5 Red Orbs. This path will come to a dead end with several bookcases huddled to block your path. If you're riding Shadow at this point, simply ride straight through these to get Orb 6.

From here, turn towards the middle and ride through the tables in a big circle to quickly collect 8 more Orbs. Once your return to where you started, pull to the right and look up. You've got 6 more orbs broken into bunches of three. Put yourself at the base of the first set and then double jump through them in a straight line. Do the same for the next set and you'll have your victory and Blue Orb Fragment #10!

Continue along the main street and destroy the Green Crystal behind the white van as well as the two Red Crystals by the blue car (watch for tentacles and Pyrobats on this street). Further up, hit the White Crystal before heading into the small walled plaza beyond.

A battle will begin with four Caina. The arena is a little tighter than it initially looks like, so be careful you don’t get cornered. Save your DT during this phase of the battle, and wait for the two Antenora to appear before calling Nightmare in.

While your companions are dealing with these two and any Caina reinforcements, find a safe spot to enjoy your book. Nightmare is going to be knocking the Antenora around, so you’ll want to stay away from them and you’re really going to want to be charged up for the next battle.

After the barrier falls, grab the Green Crystal and Red Crystal by the phone booth as well as the Red Crystal across from it. Give Nico a ring to get some shopping done if need be.

Shopping part 2

You can now purchase skills for V, and I recommend you do so. Grabbing Trigger Heart will help immensely considering how much V’s combat relies on its use. After that, it’s really at your discretion. There are probably some capabilities that you got used to with Nero that V is lacking, and you should feel free to get whatever skills will make you feel whole again.

Boss: Nidhogg

Nidhogg appears to have a lot going on, but he’s actually a relatively simple boss. Unfortunately, all of the fleshy bits that you can damage tend to stay fairly high up which minimizes the damage you can do.

Phase 1

Slam – One of the tentacles will lift up slightly and roar before slamming into the ground from one side to the other. This attack can reach pretty far but is always in the vicinity of the roar, so just back up after it roars to stay out of the way.

Rush – The Nidhogg will lift up and twist its torso before coming down to ground level and driving towards V. While it does so, it will sweep its blades across the ground. Dodging to one side should be sufficient, though you may want to dodge twice to make sure you get enough distance.

Snap – The vine will home in on you before roaring and wiggling. It will then recoil way back before darting out for a bite. Dodge to the side to avoid.

Phase 2

Drill – (<75% health) The Nidhogg will recoil and put its torso perpendicular to the ground with arms spread wide. He’ll drift downward and the shoot out in a very quick corkscrew attack when he hits the ground. Dodge or run to the side, but once the corkscrew starts, the window is very tight.

Nail – (<75% health) The Nidhogg will throw open its arms and wiggle its shoulders back and forth (almost as if walking). Soon after, it will rise high and then start to stretch out over you before darting downward with its blades.

Snaptacular – (<75% health) The vines will all pull back and lift up, and then each one will take a turn darting out for a bite. Try to dodge each one individually. The move culminates in a Nail by the Nidhogg.

Phase 3

Slime – (<50% health) The vine will start foaming orange slime in its mouth before spitting it at you. As long as you stay moving, this will miss.

Phase 4

Once the Nidhogg goes below 25% health, it will go crazy with attacks. It will spam it’s more powerful and aggressive attacks constantly. Stop reading and set your companions to Auto so you can focus on dodging attacks.

Offense

The Nidhogg is fairly tame until you knock a chunk of health off first, but don’t dawdle.

Your main target should be the vines. Each of these can be eliminated, and each can attack on its own terms (or in unison). Not only will getting rid of them give you more room to breathe, but if you can get all three knocked out, it will stun the Nidhogg. Once it has been stunned (or perhaps just before), call in Nightmare so that he lands right on top of it and goes to town. It’s possible to knock off 25%+ health in a single stun.

Make sure to charge up Griffon’s Blockade (forward on left stick while using a charged attack). The lightning bolts can cover a huge area and hit multiple enemies per attack for massive damage.

Otherwise, keep V at the back and keep him reading as much as possible. Nightmare’s huge attacks are devastating to this multi-headed enemy. Make sure you have Nightmare on standby when you get it close to 25% health. Once you cross that threshold, the Nidhogg will go wild with attacks and you’ll want to end the fight as quickly as possible.
