Walkthrough / Before You Start

Mission 02: Qliphoth

Before the mission starts, Nico is going to introduce you to a new Devil Breaker called Gerbera. This will put one into your stock, but don’t get used to this – Nico’s not big on freebies.

Shopping

You also now have the opportunity to improve Nero a little bit with those Red Orbs you’ve been collecting. Depending on how your performance, you probably have 15-20k Red Orbs (plus any external bonuses) to work with. Start out by getting Streak, Split, and Roulette Spin to flesh out your basic attack set. Streak allows you to close the distance in an attack animation (so you’re pretty safe); Split slams you back down to the ground which is powerful, but can also be used to get you back on the ground fast for evasive purposes; and Roulette Spin is an aerial attack that gives you a little bit of upward momentum, allowing you to stay in the air a bit longer if it behooves you.

Once you have those out of the way, you have a little more flexibility. For now, focus on buying some of the Red Queen Combos and Blue Orbs. Red Queen Combos will give you more variety which, aside from being helpful in combat, gives you more style points and ultimately more Red Orbs. Blue Orbs increase your vitality, but most importantly, it’s one of the few things that carries between characters, giving you more bang for your orb.

Finally, Speed will keep you in the action and Air Hike will be a solid all-around investment eventually, but you’re fine without it until Mission 06. If you get particularly comfortable with the Exceed function of the Red Queen, MAX-Act will be a great asset in the mid- to late-game.

These two skills aside, going forward, you’ll be largely on your own for buying. What you’ll want to buy will depend largely on where you feel deficient and what you have on hand. If you feel like you’re getting hammered, you can focus on Blue Rose skills and Red Queen attacks that also move Nero around.

The Streets of Red Grave

It’s time to get back at it. Start up the alley in front of you and watch for the Red Crystal to your right. Crush it for a few Red Orbs before heading up the street. In the next area, you’ll find another Red Crystal to the left of the fountain. Run directly across the middle of the two fountains and keep going to find a small set of stairs leading down to a final Red Crystal. With your pockets a little bit heavier, head up the sloped road to your left.

You’ll be attacked by three Empusa, which are likely trivial to you at this point, but this is a good chance to practice using your new abilities and learning how you can make your style rank grow. The higher the style, the more style points, and the more Red Orbs you get. Try to mix up your actions to keep things fresh. If you repeat the same attacks too much, they’ll stop counting towards your style and your score will go down.

After defeating this first wave, a second wave of five more Empusa will come out of the ground. If you get overwhelmed, make use of that new Streak ability. Use it repeatedly while swapping targets and you’ll quickly clear a safe space around you to continue your fight.

Once victorious, look at the large green screen and turn right. Though the street has been raised to block your path, you can actually scale it. Wall jump to the top for two Red Crystals, one of which is on the bus ahead. A third Red Crystal will be below in the gap between the first two. Directly ahead you'll be confronted by four Empusa and a Green Empusa. Go for the Green first, and pull them back to the bus if you need a safe spot to work from. Once you get rid of them and go to the end for a Gold Orb.

Ahead, you’ll see the path split by an ambulance. Before taking either, grab the Gerbera on the ground by the ambulance back door and look to the left to see another Red Crystal. Destroy that and then take the path to the right to find a Red Empusa. Destroy it, and then look up at the back corner of the alley to find a hole in the wall. Jump inside and destroy the two Red Crystals and unlock the Where the Red Orbs Grow Achievement. Loop back around to the left path. As you enter the left path, four Tentacles will come out of the ground. They come out slowly enough that you could probably just run past them, but they have both Red and Green orbs that may be of value to you.

The Hotel

As you enter the front courtyard of the hotel ahead, you’ll be confronted by a new enemy, the Hell Caina (Henceforth simply Caina).

New Enemy: Hell Caina - 1000 Health

  • Buster attack is 30 damage plus an extra 100 damage per shot. This can be increased by an ability gained after completing the game.
  • Listen for their scythe digging into the ground. That indicates they are rushing at you.

The Caina is a big step up from the Empusa. They still aren’t the most blood-thirsty enemy, but when they decide to attack, they move fast and can hit from far away.

The strategy for Caina is not drastically different from the Empusa, thankfully. They’re still relatively frail, so being aggressive is the best way to keep them off of you. The major difference is that you’ll need to keep an eye on more than just your immediate surroundings. If you hear their scythe dragging behind them, that means they are currently sprinting at you for an attack.

Stay aggressive, but remember to keep moving. Split/Helm Break (R1/RB + Back + Triangle/Y in the air) or Streak/Stinger/Breakthrough (R1/RB + Forward + Triangle/Y on the ground) are both great ways of clearing space around you.

Deal with the three Caina that spawn here. Stay on the offensive to keep them at bay. They’re fast, so keep moving, and use the fountain in the middle as a barrier to divide and conquer.

When you’re done, walk into the lobby ahead. There will be a Red Crystal to the left and an Overture tucked behind the desk and under the stairs to the right. Grab both before climbing the stairs. Overlooking the lobby above where the stairs split will be another Red Crystal. Hitting it will trigger a battle in the lobby. You’ll want to be quick, however, because among the two regular Empusa in the lobby will be a Red Empusa by the front door. Home in on the Red and come back to deal with the other two afterward.

After handling that, head up the stairs and take a right. Before going through the door, there’s a Green Orb Crystal on the balcony to the right. Go back to the door and follow the hallway as it leads out to another courtyard.

The platform you’re on will crumble. Once it does, turn right and follow the balcony to find a Red Crystal hanging from the ceiling at the end. Turn around and follow the balcony back into the building. In the next room, you’ll find a Nidhogg Nest with a Nidhogg Hatchling ripe for the taking. Find the hole in the wall blocked by the Qliphoth root. The Nidhogg Hatchling will worm its way into the root and kill it for you, revealing a new path.

Back out on the balcony, turn left and start climbing, being sure to grab the Red Orb Cluster on the way. This upper floor will take you back into the hotel.

At the T-intersection, turn right to find a Gerbera by some rubble. Turn around from here and make for the main stairway directly ahead. Go up a floor, take a left, and follow the hall to the end. At the end, turn right to find a Red Crystal. Destroying it will cause a Red Empusa to spawn by the main stairs. Chase it down for more orbs.

From here, Go up the stairs and take a left. At the top of the stairs will be another Red Crystal hanging from the ceiling. Destroy that and return down the stairs to the second floor. Take a right when you reach the second floor and then immediately turn right into the open bedroom. Destroy the Red Crystal and prepare for a battle with two Caina.

While these may not have felt like much of a challenge before, it’s important to recognize the limited space you have to work with. Be aggressive and try to keep the two of them grouped together so you don’t get blindsided in this small space. Another Caina will spawn into the room shortly, but his companions are likely on their way out, so he shouldn’t pose much of a threat.

When you come out of the room, you’ll see a hallway ahead just slightly to your right. Follow this and it will lead you back outside.

Outside, take a right and follow the balcony to an open doorway. Before walking in, there’s a Green Orb Crystal in the pit to the left if you need it. If not, walk through the door and find the Nidhogg Hatchling in the back left corner to trigger a battle. One Caina will spawn in this room. When that’s defeated, two more Caina will spawn in the other room. Deal with these like their predecessors to get rid of the barrier blocking your departure. Before you leave, find the large scorched black floor section. Hit it with your sword a few times to open a path to the room below which houses Blue Orb Fragment #2.

Go back to the barrier that was blocking your path on the balcony and remove it with the Nidhogg Hatchling. Just beyond it will be a Red Crystal hanging from the ceiling. Run into the hallway just beyond that and keep an eye out for an open door on the left. Duck into it to find a Red Crystal in the corner. Head back into the hall and continue in the direction you were headed. When the roots break through the wall, squeeze through the hole they made to enter a bedroom with a weird design on it.

This design on the wall indicates there’s Secret Mission #1 nearby. Find the glowing spot in the room, stand in it, and then adjust the camera angle until the pieces of the design line up. Once that’s done, the Secret Mission will be revealed, and you’ll be allowed to give it a try!

Secret Mission 01: Eliminate all of the demons

Please see Secret Missions section for video.

While there will be quite a few enemies in this mission, it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, and if you fail, you can always come back again to try later. Considering that, at the very least, this is good practice. Use this to your advantage and being extra aggressive. After all, you only have 90 seconds to complete this mission.

The first wave of enemies will be a group of five Empusa. As before, be aggressive to keep them from attacking, and when things get bad, use Streak to push enemies back and create some space to work in.

After the five are defeated, three Caina and two Green Empusa will spwan. Your main target should by your flying buddies. If they go unchecked, they’ll keep the Caina in the fight longer, which is not something you want during a timed fight. Get in the air and use your new Roulette Spin attack and the Wire Snatch move to take them out quickly.

With the Green Empusa out of the way, it’ll just be you and a small group of Caina. Bounce them around a little for some room, and then once again use the fountain to divide and conquer.

If you manage to complete the Secret Mission, you’ll get Blue Orb Fragment #3. If not, you can always come back to this mission later from the Main Menu. Collect four of these fragments to complete an orb and increase your life bar by a segment.

Whatever you decide to do with the Secret Mission, once you’re done, walk through the doorway surrounded by the sigil. Take a left and then duck into the room on the right at the end of the hall.

This barroom will get sealed off and you’ll be attacked by three Caina. You won’t have a lot of space to work with, so make careful use of your Devil Breakers to clear space in the room and keep enemies on their back foot. The battle is going to escalate slightly to include a Green Empusa as well as a few more Caina. Try to take the Caina into the air so you can tackle the Empusa while you’re up there.

Back on the Streets

When the battle is over, take the doorway out onto a balcony and drop into the yard. Directly ahead will be a Green Orb Crystal and Red Crystal. In the same spot in the other half of the yard will be an Overture. Leave the yard and take a left to find a Red Crystal. Head back to the gate and now take the right fork. You’ll be attacked by two Empusa and two Green Empusa next to a Red Crystal. Make sure to use Wire Snatch to keep them stunned and close, and you should make quick work of them.

Follow this street as it turns to the left and take it to the end. You’ll be attacked by two Empusa and you’ll be able to find a Gerbera on the raised sidewalk to the right. More importantly, if you look up from the Gerbera, you'll find a hole in a building which houses Blue Orb Fragment #4. Stroll down the alley across from that sidewalk to find a Nidhogg Hatchling. Take a deep breath and retread your steps. You’re in for a hell of a fight with your first two Hell Antenora.

New Enemy: Hell Antenora - 1500 Healt

  • If knocked onto the ground, will turn purple with rage and charge whoever hit them. Parrying this is very difficult
  • If they get knocked over by another enemy, they will charge that enemy. Don't try to do this on purpose. Not worth it.

This is your first truly tough enemy (that isn’t a boss). Fighting these guys will be completely different to everything you’ve fought so far. They have strong melee attacks and can enter a berserk state that makes them impervious to being stunned or knocked down. When they enter that state (they’ll turn purple), the only way to stop their attack is to kill them or parry their attack (the window is VERY small for this enemy).

While that might sound scary at first (and probably is VERY scary if you just rushed into your first battle with them), it’s also entirely predictable. What causes them to go into this nigh impervious rage is actually being knocked down. If they are not enraged and you hit them with an attack that knocks them over (such as a combo finisher), they will stand up enraged.

Use this to your advantage. Hit them with a long combo, and before you use the last move of the combo, knock them into the air and execute an aerial combo. When they eventually hit the ground, they’ll get up enraged, so drag a different enemy into the air and hit them with an aerial combo to stay out of trouble.

This can be a scary enemy because it penalizes you using what are probably some of your favorite moves at this point, but as long as you remember that you’re in charge of this bullfight, you’ll be fine. You might get beat up a little bit by these guys while you get used to the patterns, but once you learn the flow, you’ll be in complete control of these enemies.

This battle is pretty brutal. Don’t worry if it doesn’t go so well on your first try – it definitely didn’t for me.

Be sure to read the above section on how to handle these enemies. It might be a little bit hard to break the habits you’ve been forming, especially if you played DMC4 and already have muscle memory for Nero, so if you have trouble breaking your habits, at least watch for when they turn purple. When they do, wait for them to start running at you and jump into the air. If you can watch for this, you should be fine for the most part. If it’s going particularly poorly, do this jump and then perform a Split to push them away. It’ll repeat the cycle, but you should be able to maintain it in a way that keeps you alive.

Hop out of the ditch and find the Qliphoth root on the right blocking an alley. Use the Hatchling to clear it and enter the alley. When the alley exits into an intersection with an ambulance, take a right and check behind the ambulance for two Red Crystals. Turn around and head back through the T-intersection. Follow the street until you find the red phone booth on the right. Break the Green Orb Crystal tucked in the corner next to it and then answer the phone to get some shopping done.

As before, evaluate what you think would fit your play-style. For the upcoming boss fight, basic attacks will probably suffice, but Color Up can help deal more ranged damage for when you need to back off and Air Hike can help you evade attacks when you’re airborne (your opponent is pretty tall). It’s also probably not a terrible idea to buy what Blue Orbs you can. This will be a big step up from your last fight.

When you’re prepared. Follow the street directly ahead of the van. When you reach the top and drop down, hit the Red Crystal to the left and get your Red Queen and Blue Rose charged up. When you feel ready, drop off the platform onto the long rooftop below.

Boss: Goliath

Goliath is going to be a whole new class of difficult for you. Unlike smaller enemies, survival is a much bigger part of your strategy here. Try to stay on the ground and hit his legs; this will give you more control of your dodging for when he attacks. Make use of charging Blue Rose and your Exceed to maximize damage depending on if you’re close or far.

Phase 1

One-Two - Goliath ducks low before swinging a right hook followed by a left (so from your left and then your right). Dodging left or right CAN work here, but it’s dicey. It’s best to jump back as that will get you out of the direct line of attack of both swings. Use attacks to keep yourself airborne if needed.

Gound-Pound - A large overhead slam. He stands up tall and raises his right arm over his head before striking the ground in front of him. A couple dodges to the left or right should be able to keep you out of range of this. Once you know he’s going to miss, try to hack at his ankles a little bit.

Phase 2 (<80% Health)

Wedding Crasher - When his health reaches about 80%, he’ll stagger slightly before leaping into the air. Once this happens, disengage and run to the opposite side from the flames to avoid the huge slam that’s coming. After the slam, the roof will cave in and you’ll fall into the church. Happens only once.

Column Throw - He'll grab a column and throw it at you, which he’ll likely do right at the start. This is meant more to scare you than anything. It appears as if this might fly over your head if you do nothing, but this may not happen 100% of the time. As long as you don’t jump and just roll, you will be fine.

Phase 3 (<60% Health)

That Sucks - At the start of this phase, his stomach will light up and a shockwave will knock over one of the church walls. He’s about to vacuum in anything in a 180-degree arc (essentially the entire church). Get outside and stay there. The area around him is not safe even if it appears to be. Stay away or you risk getting sucked in. If this happens, you’ll need to press L1/LB to detonate one of your Devil Breakers. He will jump outside when he's done. He can repeat this attack outside, but as long as you get behind him and keep your distance, you should be safe. When he does repeat it, be aware that he can spit rocks at you afterward (like in the cutscene).

One/Two - While he can still do the One-Two, he can now uncouple them and perform just one of the swings.

Double Slam - This is similar to the Ground-Pound, but it uses two fists. It takes a little time to wind-up and hits a larger area, but when he's done, he'll take a moment to recover. This is a safe time to attack. Be careful, however, as the Ground-Pound is still an option, will come faster, and does not have the recovery period that this has.

Fury Swipes - He can do a couple of quick swipes. These are hard to dodge, but they are usually mixed in with other attacks, so hopefully, you’ll already have some distance. If you see a low, quick wind-up coming and you’re right in front of him, jump and try to swing as much as you can to stay above the attack. You'll usually see 4+ quick, very low swipes.

Explosion - The attack will start with him setting his feet and then taking a deep breath through his stomach. He’ll slowly stand up tall before bending down a little. After that, he'll stand up quickly and exhale. The exhale will come with an explosion, so make sure that you are fairly far away before that point.

Rock Throw - This is the same as the Column Throw from earlier, except it's usually preceded by a large jump from him. He'll naturally throw a rock instead of a column. This is harder to dodge in this wide open space, but as long as you time your dodge well, you'll be in your invulnerability frames regardless.

Here Come the Horns - This usually follows a Rock Throw. He'll throw his arms outward, roar quickly, get low, and rush at you. All of this happens very quickly. As soon as he starts this cycle, stop what you're doing and prepare to dodge. Just like with a bull, you're just dodging. After he closes about half of the distance to you, he'll leap forward and try to punch you with his right (your left) hand. As soon as he cocks his arm up, dodge to the side. This is one of the hardest such attacks to dodge because the leap throws off the cadence.

Attacking

That’s a lot of different attacks to dodge, and dodging is your first priority. On the rooftop, his attacks will be limited enough that you should be able to get in close and score some hits. Focus on his immediately after he finishes an attack. Score your hits and then back off again.

During phase two, things haven’t changed much, but you want to try to keep it so the two of you are fighting long-ways in the church so you don’t get boxed in. Use Blue Rose a lot and only attack when you feel like he’s got a big opening coming.

During Phase three, the battle changes a lot. He’s a lot more aggressive, but you can use his size against him (probably why he’s named Goliath). He can attack surprisingly quickly, but he has trouble turning, so if you can get behind him, you can probably stay behind him and hack it him fairly safely for a little bit. Try to do this as much as possible, but always watch for any moves that involve his stomach as their area-of-effect (AoE) might be able to reach you. Also, keep an eye out for him jumping. This almost always results in him spinning to face you and using a long-range attack. Dodge that attack and then try to get behind him again.

It’s a lot to keep in mind, and this is a tough fight (It was my only continue for the first 2/3rds of the game AFTER fighting him in the demo no less!), so if you fail, it’s ok. Take some extra time to get used to this. It is a great practice opportunity that will get you prepared for future bosses!

Congratulations on completing a tough boss! It’s time for an introduction (of sorts) to V.
