Walkthrough / Before You Start
Mission 01: Nero
Before you start, you should make a note to try and kill all enemies in this mission. It's not a long mission, so just make sure to get the Red Empusa under the bridge and all the tentacles so you can unlock the Protect the People achievement.
You’re headed straight into the ring. Directly ahead is a single Empusa. As you push it back a little, two more Empusa will end ups spawning behind it. Focus on the first to minimize how much you have on your plate.
After a glorious cutscene, you’ll be tossed into another battle with four Empusa. Make sure to practice with the Wire Snatch ability, it’s one of the most useful in the game, but don’t get too distracted by the new tutorial because there’s an opportunity. Lure them over to the nearby barrel, back off, and give it one shot to eliminate all four at once. One more Empusa will appear, which shouldn’t be a problem for you at this point.

With that skirmish out of the way, make your way past the double-decker bus ahead, and be on the lookout for a spare Overture on the ground to the left. Just past the arch on the left will be a Red Orb Cluster, so make sure to grab that before approaching the pile-up ahead.
Three tentacles block your way ahead. They have a pretty limited range and are pretty frail, so hang back and wait for your opportunity to strike. If they stop writhing or you see their stinger shine, that means they are preparing to attack. Clear them out and you’ll find one more tentacle at the top of the incline. Make sure to grab the Red Orb Cluster before reaching the top.
At the top, you’ll be introduced to a harmless and rewarding prey, the Red Empusa.
New Enemy: Red Empusa - 1300 Health |
The Red Empusa is not entirely harmless, but after completing the game four times, I've only seen it attack twice. Just make sure to not stand in the same exact spot the entire time you're attacking it to keep from being attacked. You'll want to get on these quick. Hitting and killing these rewards you with huge sums of Red Orbs, but once you start hitting it, it will start trying to escape. Leave it alone for too long and it will dig into the ground, vanishing forever (even restarting from the Checkpoint won't make it return). Try hard to not hit them until you are ready to kill them. |
The Red Empusa will scuttle under the bridge you’re standing on, so drop down and find it. Once you have all it will give you, hop up onto the platform nearby to grab Blue Orb Fragment #1 before turning back to continue in the direction you were originally headed in.
The path ahead is littered with Green Empusa and Tentacles, so make your way cautiously. In particular, make sure you don’t get so distracted chasing a target that you don’t pay attention to tentacles. Keep an eye out for explosive barrels on the way to help you clear enemies out quicker. As you scale the busted bridge ahead of you, make sure to grab the Overture if you need it.
At the top, you’ll have one last gauntlet of Tentacles to make your way past before you find the roots.
Boss: Qliphoth Roots |
The core of the root doesn’t actually attack directly, but it controls quite a few tentacles, each of which can attack independently. One of the attacks you should be familiar with already is the piercing attack. As before, watch for a shine on the stinger to indicate when it will strike down. Simply side-step to avoid the attack. The second attack comes when the tentacle lays itself down across the ground. When it does this, pause for about a second and then jump. If you mistime your jump, swing your sword and shoot a little to keep yourself in the air longer. Once it passes, you can land and resume your assault. It appears possible to hit the tentacles, but it doesn’t seem to do any notable damage to the tentacle or the root as a whole. Your focus should remain on the core for the most part, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed, hop into the air and you can hit the tentacles over the core pretty easily. This will stun them for a short period. Make sure to charge the Blue Rose (Hold Square/X) while swinging your sword to maximize your damage output. This will be one of the easiest targets in the game, and it’s a great opportunity to get familiar with layering attacks together for maximum damage. The tentacles do seem to get more aggressive as the root is weakened, so if you need to take a little more time to make sure you stay alive, do so. Otherwise, crush it! |
If you defeated every enemy in this mission, you'll unlock the Protect the People achievement. The end of the Qliphoth root is one sad story, now prepare for another.

The Qliphoth root is not entirely unlike the first boss you encountered, except the attacks are way less intense and you can definitely do damage this time.
