Miscellaneous Gameplay & Mechanics

Fatal Strikes

'Fatal Strikes' are special attacks that can automatically kill normal enemies and do heavy damage to bosses. Using 'Fatal Strikes' can also have significant effects post battle. Using 'Fatal Strikes' of any kind will increase the amount of Grade you earn. And the kind of 'Fatal Strike' you do on certain enemy types can also potentially increase the amount of experience or LP (Weapon Skill experience) earned, as well as increase the enemy's item drop rates

All enemies have a red, green, and blue gauge in addition to their HP. Take note of the red, green, or blue symbol that is in the description of each character's Artes. Each Arte can deplete the gauge of the corresponding color. Once the gauge is depleted, a glyph of the depleted gauge's color will appear over the enemy. You can then hit the 'Fatal Strike' button to attack with a 'Fatal Strike.'

The following table will show you what bonus will be granted based on what colored Fatal Strike you use on a specific enemy type. For example, if you want to increase a human enemy's item drop rate, use a green 'Fatal Strike' to finish them off. If you wanted more experience from a human enemy type, you would aim for a blue 'Fatal Strike' instead. Also, the more times you can chain a 'Fatal Strike' during a single combo (making the glyph appear), the greater the bonus you will receive.

Different enemy types also carry various resistances and weaknesses to specific 'Fatal Strikes.' While these resistances and weaknesses have no effect on damage dealt, or the bonuses obtained from using them, they can make it easier or more difficult to hit certain enemy types with certain 'Fatal Strikes.' For example, bird type enemies have an increased resistance to blue 'Fatal Strikes,' therefore making it more difficult to deplete their blue gauge to make the blue glyph appear. On the other hand. Bird type enemies are weak to red 'Fatal Strikes,' therefore making it easier to deplete their red gauge to make the red glyph appear. The details of all enemy types' resistances and weaknesses to 'Fatal Strikes' is detailed in the table below.

Over Limit

Over Limit is the most powerful tool you have at your disposal for creating combos and launching the most damaging Artes in the game. There are four different levels of Over Limit. The first two levels of Over Limit are opened up to you by naturally playing the game. Over Limit Lv. 3 and Lv. 4 can only be accessed by Synthesis. Each level of Over Limit can be entered by doing the following:

Over Limit Lv. 1Press 'Right' on the D-Pad. Consumes one Over Limit gauge.
Over Limit Lv. 2Press 'Down' on the D-Pad. Consumes two Over Limit gauges.
Over Limit Lv. 3Press 'Left' on the D-Pad. Consumes three Over Limit gauges.
Over Limit Lv. 4Press 'Up' on the D-Pad. Consumes four Over Limit gauges.

The effects of each level of Over Limit are cumulative. So Over Limit Lv. 2 will have the effects of Over Limit 2 as well as Over Limit Lv. 1. And so on. The effects of each level of Over Limit are as follows:

Over Limit Lv. 1Allows the use of infinite normal attacks and Artes without resting, spells have no casting time, and allows the use of Burst Artes.
Over Limit Lv. 2All attacks will pick up enemies who are knocked down.
Over Limit Lv. 3Artes will cost zero TP to perform and enables the user to use their Mystic Artes.
Over Limit Lv. 4The user will take no damage and cannot be staggered.

While there may only be four levels of Over Limit, the Over Limit gauge can eventually be increased to a maximum of eight by obtaining the Limit Octet item. This item can only be obtained by clearing 'Team Battle - Merciless' in the Nordopolica Coliseum.

Burst Artes

In order to use a Burst Arte, the user must be in Over Limit Lv. 1 or higher. That character must then perform an Arcane Arte, Altered Arte, or an Intermediate or Advanced spell while holding the 'Artes' button. The Burst Arte performed will depend on the Weapon Skills you have equipped. If you have more than one of the following pairs of Weapon Skills equipped, the pair that is listed higher in the table will take priority.

Required Weapon SkillsBurst Arte
Hell Fire and ChainFire Element Burst Arte
Athenor and CrucibleEarth Element Burst Arte
Gale and AlembicWind Element Burst Arte
Great Deluge and DispersionWater Element Burst Arte
None of the above equippedDefault Burst Arte

There are also a few Burst Artes with special activation conditions which I will cover here.

Estelle's Cat Teaser

  1. All of the above weapon skills must NOT be equipped.
  2. Estelle must have the 'Cat Teaser' weapon equipped.
  3. Estelle must be in Over Limit.
  4. Use an Arcane, Altered, Intermediate or Advanced Magic Arte while holding the 'Attack' AND 'Artes' buttons.
Flynn's Burning Phoenix

The activation of this Burst Arte can be very tricky. I will put my personal method for using it here as it is the most reliable one I have found.

  1. Rising Phoenix must have been used 200+ times.
  2. Set Rising Phoenix to your default 'Artes' button.
  3. Set Rising Phoenix to all four of your right analogue stick's 'Artes Shortcut' inputs.
  4. Flynn must be in Over Limit.
  5. Use the Rising Phoenix that is set to your default 'Artes' button and successfully hit the enemy while rapidly rotating the right analogue stick.

Sorcerer's Ring

The Sorcerer's Ring is a tool that can be used to destroy obstacles, activate machinery, and even attack enemies. Enemies struck by the Sorcerer's Ring can either be frozen, stunned, or enraged, depending on the enemy. The Sorcerer's Ring has five different levels of power that allow it to clear more and more obstacles. The first three levels of the Sorcerer's Ring are obtained by playing the game normally.

To obtain the Sorcerer's Ring Lv. 4, you have a few steps you must accomplish. First, fly to Myorzo and obtain the Fell Arm, Abyssion, from the Elder. This can be done before going to Zaude. Next, wait until after you have defeated the Khroma Dragon in Relewiese Hollows. Then fly southwest of Nordopolica to find four small islands. Land on the island with piled up stones and go inside. You will receive the Fell Arm, Zarich. Now go into the cave to the Aer Krane to upgrade the ring to Lv. 4.

To obtain the Sorcerer's Ring Lv. 5, wait until after you have battled Flynn in Aurnion. Then fly south of Zaphias and look for a large pile of rocks at the southern tip of the continent. Enter this place to upgrade the Sorcerer's Ring to Lv. 5.

Weapon Skills & Skill Symbols

Most weapons have special skills attached to them that grant beneficial (or sometimes harmful) effects, such as raising your attack and defense.

Weapon Skill effects will be active so long as the specific weapon that houses those skills is equipped. Any skill that a weapon has can be permanently learned, therefore giving you the option to equip and unequip those skills at will regardless of the weapon you have equipped. These skills can be permanently learned by simply having the weapon with the desired skills equipped when battling to earn LP. Once enough LP has been accumulated, the Weapon Skill will be learned and added to your inventory.

There is a catch, however. You can't just equip as many Weapon Skills as you want. If you want to equip a Weapon Skill without having that particular weapon equipped, it will take a certain amount of Skill Points to do so. In general, the better the Weapon Skill, the more Skill Points it takes to equip it. You can gain more Skill Points to equip more Weapon Skills by simply leveling up.

There are hundreds of skills and they are broken up into four categories. Attack Skills. Guard Skills. Move Skills. And Support Skills. In addition to the base effects of each Weapon Skill, by equipping several Weapon Skills from various categories, you will also earn the benefits of a Skill Symbol. Skill Symbols come into effect during Over Limit and will grant you various benefits. The effects will also be more powerful based on what level of Over Limit you enter. The types of Weapon Symbols, the Weapon Skills needed to activate them, and the effects are listed below.

Search Points

Search Points are marked locations on the World Map where you can find Synthesis items. These Search Points can come in several different forms. On land, they can appear as a stump, pile of bones, or as a seashell on a beach. On the ocean, there are seashells and circles of flying seagulls. It is highly recommended that you take advantage of Search Points, as some can contain exceedingly rare and valuable Synthesis items to craft some of the best gear in the game. Exhausted Search Points can be spawned again over time and also by sleeping at Inns.

Difficulty Settings

Difficulty mainly changes the stats of enemies and the multiplier of Grade after a battle. I know that one particular boss will not use his Mystic Arte if the difficulty is set to Easy. But I don't know if there are other bosses affected in this way. The 'Unknown' difficulty is only accessible on New Game + after purchasing it in the Grade Shop. The difficulties are as follows:

DifficultyDetails
EasyEnemy stats reduced to 0.7x. Grade is not awarded. Some bosses will not use their Mystic Artes.
NormalDefault setting.
HardEnemy HP multiplied by 2.5x. Attack stats are multiplied by 1.2x. Grade after a battle will be multiplied by 1.5x.
UnknownEnemy HP multiplied by 5x. Physical attack stats are multiplied by 3.5x. Magic attack stats are multiplied by 3x. Defense stats are multiplied by 2.5x. Grade after a battle will be multiplied by 2x.

Cooking Recipes

Don't neglect this mechanic. Both in and out of battle, cooking can have a substantial effect on your party. Most notably, cooking can provide stat boosts to the party, giving you valuable preparation before difficult battles. If you're dealing with a boss that spams spells, then cooking a dish that raises the party's magic defense is a wise decision.

Party members gradually become more skilled at cooking a dish the more times they prepare it. Their portrait will display one star, two stars, three stars, and then finally 'MASTERED' respectively to reflect their skills at preparing a certain dish. The greater the skill, the greater the effects the dish will have.

Here you can find all of the cooking recipes, what their effects are, and how to learn them. Each character in your party has preferences as far as their palette is concerned. So some foods will have better or worse effects for them. Also some party members will be better or worse at cooking certain dishes than others. This too will have an effect on the outcome of the dish. These effects will all be noted along with the Recipes.
