SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions (PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC/Steam/Microsoft Windows, iOS, Android) Character Recruiting FAQ Version 1.6 Written by killerb255/hardmanbow/themanbow (depending on where you find me) ================ Revision History ================ 1.6 - Updated the "II. Terminology" section to reflect new discoveries for Taria's Trigger Regions. - Further clarification on how to recruit Antonius, Aslana Melek, and Maximus. - More blanks filled in (character quotes, formations, etc.) - Per /u/LanceHeart from the subreddit /r/SaGa, add Failure Condition for recruiting Tsubaki (if you already have the Arch Witch, you're SOL...) 1.5 - Add spell check plugin to Notepad++ = lots of embarrassment. I can't believe how many typos I had left uncorrected! I'm getting old... - All stats filled in for all characters now 1.4: - Filled in more blanks (quotes, stats, etc.) - New entry: Can Send on Mission. If "Yes," then you can send this character on a Mercenaries Guild Mission. If "No," then you can't. - Updates to reflect what does and does not work after completing both the Urpina and Balmaint Walkthroughs. Examples: -- Recruiting Francis: There is a way to recruit him without the baby -- Recruiting Ogniana: Watch those Intermissions! -- Balmaint's Story Intermissions: Corrected some errors in the Terminology Section. 1.3: - Minor additions to Failure Conditions for Urpina and Elisabeth - Revision to recruiting Arch Witch and Tsubaki as Leonard (no Chaos pwning involved with Leo--instead Leo pwns Tsubaki. :D ) - Clarify above that this FAQ is for all versions of the game and not just the PlayStation 4. :) - More typos and formatting fixed (this is embarrassing! :/ ) - Some more details for recruiting Sasha (as if that entry wasn't long enough) - Clarification for recruiting Irene and Raphael with Balmaint (Intermission 2 must be started after Part 6: Northeast Boundary, otherwise the dam will not be destroyed) - Added separate "Parts" entries to terminology for Leonard and Balmaint. Again, like Chapters, there is nothing in game that will tell you explicitly which Part you are on. - More detail on Chapters and Intermissions as there was some confusion on how these work. There might be too much detail now...perhaps this should be saved for individual character walkthroughs? - Added a line in the detailed character part called "LP=0 Recovery". Each character can recover from being "LP-killed" after a certain number of battles. That wacky mayor of Nekwa Muiredach is a wannabe Leonid (from Romancing SaGa 3) with his 1 Round LP=0 Recovery while other characters are down for the count in as many as 12 Rounds!!! I don't have all the numbers yet (obviously it'll take a while to get all the data). 1.2: - More syntax errors corrected - Recruiting Balmaint with Leonard: confirmation and clarification of Failure Condition - All stats filled in except for Armored Maiden, Sasha, Roh Sung, Hilda, and Irene. - MUCH better clarification of the Antonius and Urpina Rescue Routes by adding to the Terminology section. Also helps that I replayed Urpina's Story while writing that section. :D - Additional Failure Conditions for Antonius and Armored Maiden. - Confirmed that Angle and Socrates are much easier to recruit than originally thought. Corrected both characters to reflect this. 1.1: - Various syntax errors corrected - Chichi's location corrected (Marchiam Ria, not Mare Ilfee! DOH!) - Add to Deuteragonists' section that a New Game+ is required with corresponding Stories/Playthroughs completed - Some blanks filled in that were left blank in 1.0 (still plenty more to go, though) - Corrected Erreich's entry in the Character Table from "O" to "/" in the Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint columns, since recruiting him requires giving up Kreisa. - Rephrased some steps that involve various paths involving Antonius in Urpina's Story or Urpina in Taria's Chapter 3 or Balmaint's 2nd Intermission with the Earth Serpent Common Quest selected. This can be difficult to do without being spoilery. - Clarification on recruiting Adill in Method B, as going back to Walomir prematurely was discovered by xenosaga123 to be a Failure Condition during her Urpina's Story Adill Route Playthrough. - Added a new column to the Character Table: "EL" for Character Element. 1.0: First Release ======= Preface ======= Out of the 23+ years I've been on GameFAQs, I have never written or submitted a FAQ, so please bear with me! I've been a big fan of the SaGa series even since I've played SaGa Frontier in 1998. Here I am in 2020 playing another SaGa game, and am finding it strange that there are no FAQs for this game! I can sort of understand why! Out of all the SaGa games, this one has SO many conditional paths that writing a clear and concise FAQ to cover it all seems daunting! There are Japanese Wikis out there for this game, and they're pretty good for the most part: https://www.spoiler.jp/game/saga_sg/hiiro/ https://kamikouryaku.com/saga_sg Credit goes to the authors of both of these for having so much information out there! Even then, having the information in English on GameFAQs is more convenient for casual players in English-speaking countries. ======== Contents ======== I. Introduction II. Terminology III. Character Table IV. Detailed Character Steps V. Credits =============== I. Introduction =============== There are 79 total characters in this game, the most in any SaGa game! Some join every Protagonist, while some will only join one, two or three of them. In all versions of the game save for the Nintendo Switch, there is a trophy for recruiting every character, so if you want that, read on! =============== II. Terminology =============== Protagonist: ------------ The Main Character of the Story. SaGa Scarlet Grace has a choice of four Protagonists: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint. At the beginning of the game, when the player answers a series of ten questions, they are given one of the four Protagonists. Alternatively, you can choose one for yourself, but without the bonuses given as a result of "leaving your choice to the comet." In a New Game+, you have the option to bypass the comet, but again without the bonuses. On a first Playthrough, you're very likely going to end up with Urpina or Leonard as a result, so if you want to play as Taria or Balmaint, you can either go through the questions again (and again...and again...) or just select your Protagonist outright, bonuses be damned. Story (or Playthrough): ----------------------- The series of (semi-)unique events for each Protagonist. This is sometimes referred to as a Quest or a Scenario among SaGa players. As using "Quest" this way can cause confusion with other uses of the term (see below), this FAQ will use "Story" or "Playthrough" instead. Common Quest: ------------- One of the four overarching quests in SaGa Scarlet Grace that our Protagonists get dragged into. Each Protagonist is forced to complete one of these as part of the plot (referred to as their Main Quest) and with the exception of Leonard, are required to select two of the remaining three to complete as well (referred to as an Elective Common Quest or Elective Quest). The four Common Quests are: - Sigfrei: Find out what the former governor of Provincia Kei is up to (and for Balmaint, cut off his head). - Scarlet Shards: Find and destroy (or for Leonard, drown) the fragments of the Wicked One. - Earth Serpent: Stop the Earth Serpent's rampage (and for Urpina, defend her home and rescue/protect her family). - Phoenix: Chase after the sacred bird of legend (and for Taria, also find the source of the distortion she's seeing in her pottery). Each Common Quest can only be completed once per Playthrough. Leonard has no Elective Common Quests. Some of the remaining Common Quest Elements are integrated into his Main Story (the Earth Serpent and Phoenix just pop up willy nilly, and there are only a few Sigfrei events for him). Main Quest: ----------- The Common Quest that the Protagonist is required to complete either at the beginning of their Story (Urpina, Taria) or throughout the entire playthrough (Leonard, Balmaint). Side Quests: ------------ Any of the numerous quests that are not required for completion of the game. Chapter (for Urpina and Taria's Stories): ----------------------------------------- One of three sections of Urpina and Taria's Stories. The first Chapter covers their Main Quest and the remaining two Chapters cover two Elective Common Quests that are selected by leaving their starting region and entering a Trigger Region. Unfortunately, the game doesn't outright show "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc. Chapter 1 is the beginning of the Story and ends when the Main Quest (Earth Serpent for Urpina, Phoenix for Taria) is finished and you see hand-drawn artwork of Urpina or Taria on the screen. The player is automatically taken back to their starting region (Rhonicum for Urpina, Termina for Taria). | Urpina Elective Quest | Trigger Region (travel from Rhonicum to...) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Sigfrei | Cerenaif (Chapter 2 or 3) | | | Bicyniro (Chapter 2 or 3) | | Scarlet Shards | Gradion (Chapter 2 or 3, can decline Sasha's request | for one Chapter only) | | | Jusitania (Chapter 3, only if Phoenix is complete) | | Phoenix | Jusitania (Chapter 2 or 3) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Taria Elective Quest | Trigger Region (travel from Termina to...) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Scarlet Shards | Normi (Chapter 2 or 3, can decline Sasha's request | for one Chapter only) | | | Gradion (Chapter 2 or 3, can decline Sasha's request | indefinitely) | | | Jusitania (Chapter 2 or 3, can decline Sasha's | request for one Chapter only) | | Earth Serpent | Thracini (Chapter 2 or 3) | | | Kei (Chapter 2 or 3) | | | Rhonicum (Chapter 2 or 3, must decline Sasha's | request in Gradion or have Chapter 2 Scarlet Shards | complete) | | Sigfrei | Normi (Chapter 2 or 3, must decline Sasha's request | or have Chapter 2 Scarlet Shards complete*) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *: If Chapter 2 is Earth Serpent and it was triggered from Rhonicum, then it's impossible for Chapter 3 to be Sigfrei. Chapter 2 ends when the selected Common Quest is finished. Again, hand-drawn artwork of Urpina or Taria is shown and the player is taken back to their starting region to start Chapter 3. ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: The term Chapter comes from the Japanese Wikis, and since the * * Community has used this terminology for so long, this FAQ will do the same. * ******************************************************************************* Part (for Balmaint's Story): ---------------------------- One of seven sections of Balmaint's Story, which is fitting, considering how many times he has to execute Sigfrei. :) After each Part, you will automatically be taken back to Castle Kohan in Provincia Kei. The Parts are as follows: - Part 1: Maurehua - Part 2: Termina - Part 3: Numadica - Part 4: Hibernia - Part 5: Rhonicum Crossroad - Part 6: Northeast Boundary - Part 7: Azhuacan Endgame ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: I considered using "Chapter" for these sections, but there is already * * enough confusion even among the Japanese Wikis for what is and is not * * considered a "Chapter" for Balmaint. Some say Balmaint has three Chapters * * like Urpina and Taria, and the Chapters are separated by when each Common * * Quest, or Intermission, is complete. I don't find this to be helpful * * because the first Intermission can be taken as early as after Part 1 or as * * late as after Part 4, while the second one can be taken as early as after * * Part 3 or as late as after Part 6!! * ******************************************************************************* Intermission (for Balmaint's Story): ------------------------------------ For Balmaint, these are breaks in the Main Story. Certain detours open up, and entering these regions will pause the Main Story and start a Common Quest. This can be done twice--referred to as Intermission 1 and Intermission 2 respectively (or sometimes first Intermission and second Intermission). Unlike Urpina and Taria's fairly straightforward Chapter structure, Inter- missions can get a little confusing, as there are rules about when they can be started and what Common Quests are available when. Castle Kohan Executioner Breaktime Rules: 1) Each Common Quest can only be completed once (so no, you can't have both Intermissions be Earth Serpent, for example). 2) After Intermission 1 is complete, at least two Main Quest Objectives must be completed in order to start Intermission 2. For example, if you complete Intermission 1 Phoenix during Part 2, you won't be able to start Intermission 2 until at least Part 4. Likewise if you complete Intermission 1 Scarlet Shards during Part 4, you will not be able to start Intermission 2 until Part 6. | Intermission 1 Completed During Part | When Intermission 2 Can Start | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | 2: Termina | Part 4, 5, 6, or "6A" | | 3: Numadica | Part 5, 6, or "6A" | | 4: Hibernia | Part 6 or "6A" | | "4A": The subpart after Hibernia | Part "6A" | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: Part "6A" is the subpart after the Northeast Boundary, which only occurs if Intermission 2 has not been completed yet by time Part 6 is complete. During the "No Breaks Allowed" period between Intermission 1 and 2, all Common Quest Trigger Regions are inaccessible unless they were accessed during a completed Intermission or they are part of the current Main Quest Path (see Rule #5 below). There is also a "No Breaks Allowed" period for two Main Quest Objectives after Intermission 2! So if you were to take both of your Intermissions as soon as you possibly can (Intermission 1 during Part 2 and Intermission 2 during Part 4), then the other Trigger Regions will be locked until Part 6, in which then you can freely access those regions (but no Common Quest or "Intermission 3" will occur...believe me, I tried this...). 3) The maximum amount of time you can put off Intermission 1 is after the end of Part 4. At that point, you will be forced to make a selection (Sigfrei goes into hiding and Arthur gets bored, lol) and a Common Quest must be completed before the Main Quest can continue. The Balmaint Walkthrough Guide calls this "Part 4A". 4) The maximum amount of time you can put off Intermission 2 is after the end of Part 6. At that point, you will be forced to make a selection and the Common Quest must be completed before the Endgame starts. The Balmaint Walkthrough Guide calls this "Part 6A". 5) Trigger Regions are always located adjacent to (or one Region away from) the Main Quest Path. This is why you can start an Intermission 1 Scarlet Shards in Jusitania during "Part 4A": Jusitania is just south of Hibernia, and Hibernia was opened up as part of the Main Quest Path in Part 4. 6) Some Trigger Regions will be overwritten later on in Balmaint's Story. If a region is en route to a Main Quest event, any Common Quest (Intermission) triggers en route will be overwritten. For example, you only have ONE opportunity for a Phoenix 1st Intermission (its Trigger Region is Yaxart) because the next Part takes place in Numadica. Since Yaxart is en route to Numadica, the Yaxart Phoenix trigger becomes permanently overwritten. Confusing? Yeah, that's what happens when a non-linear mechanic like Common Quests is shoehorned into a Story as railroaded as Balmaint's. If you want to keep it as simple as possible, my advice is to wait until you're forced to take an Intermission before you bother with them. Just stay on the Main Quest Path until you're done with Part 4 (Hibernia), take an Intermission when Sigfrei goes into hiding and Arthur gets bored, finish it, go back to doing Main Quest Stuff, and then take your second Intermission when Arthur gets bored again. Save your game after every Part (every time you get sent back to Kei). Don't wander off aimlessly or else you could accidentally start a Common Quest that you don't want (or at the wrong time) and could potentially miss out on recruiting certain characters. If you accidentally start a Common Quest (giant sneks start appearing out of nowhere, strange woman asks you to find strange rocks, flaming birds fly around), reload your save. The one exception to this is if you really really want your 1st Intermission to be Phoenix--you only have one shot at that, as mentioned in Rule #6 above. Castle Kohan Executioner's Smoke/Coffee/Lunch/Dinner/Bathroom Break Schedule: | Main Quest Part| Intermission 1 | Trigger | Intermission 2 | Trigger | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | 2: Termina | Phoenix(x) | Yaxart(x) | No | N/A | | | Earth Serpent | Megdasse | No | N/A | | 3: Numadica | Earth Serpent | Megdasse | No | N/A | | | | Thracini | No | N/A | | 4: Hibernia | Scarlet Shards | Normi | Scarlet Shards*| Normi* | | | Earth Serpent | Megdasse | Earth Serpent* | Megdasse* | | | | Thracini | | Thracini* | | | | Rhonicum(x)| | Rhonicum* | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | "4A" | Scarlet Shards | Normi | No | N/A | | | | Jusitania | | N/A | | | Earth Serpent | Megdasse | No | N/A | | | | Thracini | | N/A | | | | Rhonicum(x)| | N/A | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Part "4A" only occurs if the first Intermission hasn't been taken yet. | | During this "subpart," you must complete the first Intermission before the | | Main Story continues. If Intermission 2 has been completed earlier, skip to | | the Endgame/Part 7. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (x): Will no longer be a Trigger Region after this Part, as the Main Quest will engulf this Region on the next Part. *: Only applies if two Main Quest Objectives were completed after Intermission 1. (u): Only if Cerenaif was unlocked during Part 5 or Intermission 1 Earth Serpent was started from Thracini per the Adjacent Regions Rule (Rule #5). The Intermission ends when the selected Common Quest is finished. Like the end of an Urpina or Taria Chapter, hand-drawn artwork of Balmaint is shown and he is automatically taken back to Provincia Kei (usually with Arthur reminding Bal of what the next goal is before they were distracted by the Intermission). Part (for Leonard's Story): --------------------------- One of three sections of Leonard's Story, which are as follows: - Part 1: From the beginning of Story to the Imperial Library in Azhuacan - Part 2: From the Imperial Library in Azhuacan to the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary - Part 3: From the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary to the Endgame Unlike the other Protagonists' Stories, Leonard doesn't get any hand-drawn art or get transported back to any particular area. However, it is important to know which Part you are when recruiting characters, as many of them are no longer available after Part 2. Elective Common Quest (or Elective Quest): ------------------------------------------ A Common Quest that you can choose/is not forced upon the Player--not the Main Quest. - Urpina's Elective Quests: Sigfrei, Scarlet Shards, and Phoenix. Can choose two of these--one during Chapter 2 and the other during Chapter 3. - Taria's Elective Quests: Sigfrei, Scarlet Shards, and Earth Serpent. Can choose two of these--one during Chapter 2 and the other during Chapter 3. - Balmaint's Elective Quests: Scarlet Shards, Earth Serpent, and Phoenix. Can choose two of these--one during the first detour from the Main Quest (Inter- mission 1) and one during the second detour (Intermission 2). Leonard has no Elective Common Quests. His Main Quest has some bits and pieces of the other Common Quests built in. Retinue: -------- The five active Party members that are participating in battles. Party: ------ Your collection of Characters that have been recruited, not necessarily in your Retinue. There is no limit to the number of characters you can recruit in a single Playthrough. Antonius Rescue Route: ---------------------- In Chapter 1 of Urpina's Story, you will pursue Antonius' kidnappers. Once you get to Old Wise, you will have two sets of dialog choices: one in Old Wise and one in Sugar Castle Lighthouse. To continue down the Rescue Route, either: a) Choose the first choice in Old Wise (destroy the Saw) OR b) Choose the second choice in Old Wise (don't destroy the Saw), finish the triple-encounter in Sugar Castle Lighthouse, and then choose the second choice. (choosing the first choice ends the Rescue Route) If you end the Antonius Rescue Route, you will end up on the Black-Robe Figure Route. Urpina Rescue Route: -------------------- Yep, Urpina has one of these as well! This only happens on Taria's Chapter 3 Earth Serpent or Balmaint's 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started during Part 6A. For Taria, you have to start Chapter 3 Earth Serpent from Rhonicum, defeat the Earth Serpent once, go to Azhuacan and talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers. Next, steal the Saw from Marigan's Temple, and then double back to Rhonicum. There will be a black flag flying over Fort Kathrin if you did everything correctly. DO NOT fight the Earth Serpent again--instead, go straight to Silmium. For Balmaint, you have to wait until after Part 6 (Northeast Boundary events) until Arthur gets bored. This is "Part 6A." From Kei, go northwest to Megdasse. Go to the Kaikow Observation Tower and the Earth Serpent will pop out of the hole next to the Kaikow Glyph. Fight the Earth Golems and the Serpent. Now go back to Kei and then take the southeast ferry to Azhuacan. Talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers, and then choose to rely on the Julanius family (if you don't get this option, you started the Intermission too soon--this happens if you start it during Part 4 or 5). Next, leave Azhuacan through Testika to the southeast and then go through Fort Kathrin to get to Rhonicum. Go to Silmium and you will recruit Maximus temporarily. Double back to Azhuacan and choose to have Maximus dedicate himself to the Holy Republic (there are other ways to do this as well, but this is the easiest way). Now leave Azhuacan again and go back to Rhonicum. There will be a black flag flying over Fort Kathrin if you did everything correctly. Now go straight to Silmium. From this point, you'll have a role reversal between Urpina and Antonius. Fast-forward to New Wise, Old Wise, and Sugar Castle Lighthouse, and you'll have the same set of choices. (choosing the first choice ends the Rescue Route) If you end the Urpina Rescue Route, you will end up on the Armored Maiden Route. Endgame: -------- The final events of the Protagonist's Story/Playthrough ==================== III. Character Table ==================== LEGEND: ------- Character: Exactly what it says on the tin. :) Protagonist: Which Protagonist(s) the character joins. U = Urpina, L = Leonard, T = Taria, and B = Balmaint. x = Does not join O = Joins very easily. Does not require a Common Quest, and player cannot lock themselves out of recruiting the character. o = Joins somewhat easily, but there's something that can go wrong that could prevent the player from successfully recruiting the character. These include: a) Performing recruiting steps out of order b) Performing recruiting steps at the wrong time c) Performing some steps in the middle of a Side Quest, Main Quest, or Common Quest events causing the game to be "confused" about what events apply to what quest (events in Marchiam Bicyniro are a HUGE OFFENDER). d) Progressing too far in the Main Story (e.g.: Leonard reaching the North- East Boundary) 1Q = Joins, but requires one Common Quest to be complete or in progress 2Q = Joins, but requires two Common Quests to be complete or one complete and another in progress. P = The Protagonist/Main Character S = Starter character/Character that is in the party from the beginning F = Non starting character that is forced into your party at some point/is unavoidable. If you don't like the particular character in question, press this button to pay respects. _+ = Requires a New Game+ and a specific Protagonist's Story completed. U+ = New Game+ with Urpina completed, L+ = New Game+ with Leonard completed, T+ = New Game+ with Taria completed, and B+ = New Game+ with Balmaint completed. / = Joins, but you have to choose between this character and at least one other character for reasons other than the Palette Swap Rule (see below). Stats: The six base stats of each character. STR = Strength, DEX = Dexterity, MOB = Mobility, END = Endurance, INT = Intelligence, and ACU = Acuity. Again, these are base stats. This is before any bonuses or penalties from equipment or Celestial/Spiritual/Infernal adjustments from leaving your Protagonist choice to the comet. LP: Base Life Points (before equipment and comet adjustments) EL: Character's Personal Element, which affects many things like elemental damage, resistance, and flux absorbance rates for Mages: Na: Natura (Nature. Tree for SaGa Frontier 2 fans, Wood for Unlimited Saga fans. Not Sodium.) Ig: Ignis (Fire. Heh heh, heh heh. Sorry, old 90s reference.) Te: Terra (Earth, Ground, stuff like that) Ae: Aes (Metal. Also an Unlimited Saga reference) Un: Unda (Water. Drink plenty of unda to stay hydrated. And stuff.) Specialty: Character's starting weapon type. Spellcasters will be indicated with "Staff/Inc" (Staff and Incantations). This may or may not be the most ideal weapon for the character in question (e.g.: suboptimal stats) Palette Swap Of: In this game, many characters look exactly alike except for color changes. Think Scorpion and Sub-Zero from early Mortal Kombat games. SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions has what's known as the Palette Swap Rule. This rule prohibits two palette-swapped characters from joining the same Party with one exception (Julia...she is a Palette Swap of both Queen and Hilda, but since she's a mirror image of the two, the game doesn't consider her a true Palette Swap). If you have the character listed in this column in your party, then the game will not give you the option to recruit his/her palette-swapped counterpart. | P R O T A G O N I S T S | | (Base Stats without any modifications from Comet choice) | | | Protagonist | Stats | | | | Palette | | Character | U | L | T | B |STR|DEX|MOB|END|INT|ACU|LP|EL|Specialty| Swap Of | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Urpina | P | o | x | x | 12| 11| 13| 8| 7| 9| 8|Ae|L. Balmaint's version, "Arthur's Bodyguard," is a separate character from the Marion acquired by the other three Protag- onists ("Arthur's Girl"). This is most noticeable when carrying over learned techniques and ranks from previous Playthroughs. "Arthur's Girl" and "Arthur's Bodyguard" also have different voice tracks/say different things in battle. | O T H E R C H A R A C T E R S | | | Protagonist | Stats | | | | Palette | | Character | U | L | T | B |STR|DEX|MOB|END|INT|ACU|LP|EL|Specialty| Swap Of | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Adill | 1Q| B+| 1Q| x | 7| 10| 12| 9| 10| 14| 5|Te|Bow | | | Aleksandra| x | x | 1Q| x | 8| 10| 8| 7| 14| 12| 6|Un|Staff/Inc| | | Angle | O | o | x | 1Q| 12| 13| 10| 8| 9| 11| 5|Un|S. Detailed Character Steps ============================ Each entry is in the following format: _) Character Name Title or short description, as shown in-game "Quote as shown in-game" Formation Acquired: Each non-starter character recruited will add a Formation to your list (if you don't have it already). Unique Role: Each character comes with a role that no other character can acquire. Specialty: The weapon type that the character is initially equipped with. LP=0 Recovery: Number of Battles before the character can fight again after having their Life Points reduced to 0. Can Send on Mission: Yes/No. If the character can be sent on a Mercenaries Guild Mission, then Yes. Otherwise No. Most characters can except for the following: - Main Characters (Protagonists), even if they are not THE Protagonist (example: during Leonard's Story you can't send Urpina, Taria, or Balmaint on a Mission) - Protagonists' Partners (Deuteragonists), even if they are not the acting Deuteragonist during the Story you are playing (example: during Urpina's Story, you can recruit Kahn quite easily, but you can't send him on a Mission because he is Taria's Deuteragonist) - Characters that can potentially leave at least one Protagonist's Party, even if it's not the Protagonist you are playing as (example: Elysed can leave Urpina's Party, so you can't send her on Missions in anyone's Story). Recommended Use: How I recommend that the character be used based on his/her stats, Unique Role, etc. The beauty of most SaGa games is that you can train characters in just about any way you want, even if it's not the most optimal way. I mean if you want to make that dingbat Marion a Mage, you can make her a Mage, but she's not going to do nearly as much damage as an Elysed or a Francis. How to Acquire: Detailed steps for recruiting the character for each Protagonist when possible. FAILURE CONDITION(S): Steps to avoid doing, as this will render the character permanently inaccessible for the rest of the Story/Playthrough. PROTAGONISTS: 1) Urpina Lady of House Julanius "Though I may be young, I shall still do all I can for House Julanius!" Formation Acquired: Royal Cross Unique Role: Maidenblade Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Protagonist) Recommended Use: Let's see...she can get Dual Wield for free in her Chapter 1. She. Can. Dual. Wield. Long Swords and nothing else matters. If you played Leonard before Urpina, then she's not going to have the Novice Duelist role so you could experiment with other weapons if you like. Once she's in her own Story, get her that Role! How to Acquire: Urpina: Main Character. If you don't have her, you're either playing the wrong Protagonist or you're playing the wrong game. :D Leonard: In Part 2 (after visiting the Imperial Library in Azhuacan), go to Rhonicum. Inspect the large hole southeast of Fort Kathrin to have the Earth Serpent pop up. Next, travel south to Silmium to find that it is under attack. Enter Silmium and fight the three battles there. Urpina will join. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: Urpina seemingly left without Daddy Max's permission, so you * * can't go back to Silmium for the rest of the Playthrough! Keep this in * * mind when developing goods! * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Do the above events during Part 1. Urpina will not join, and you will not be able to trigger any additional events during Part 2. 2) Visit the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary (starting Part 3) before starting this process. Taria and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 2) Leonard Farmer "I'll need to grow up fast if I'm gonna drown the Scarlet Shards in Ei-Hanum." Formation Acquired: Whirlwind Unique Role: Cannonball (Initial Position up (L), Chance to be targeted up (M)) Location: Yaxart (Rowsui) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Protagonist) Recommended Use: Tank. He's one of the best in the game! He can also open up a can of "Cram It" when needed. For some of the super-bosses in the game, you might want to switch him to Long Sword or Club so he can use a Shield in the Erakleos Guard formation. How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Complete the Pilgrimage to all of the regular shrines in Yaxart, but DO NOT complete all of the True Shrines. Once the regular shrines have been completed, go to Rowsui and Converse. Choose to have Leonard come along. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Decline Leonard's request to have him come along. 2) Complete the True Macha, True Uzume, True Diemazu, and True Marigan shrines before visiting Rowsui and talking to Leo. Leonard: Main Character, so you better have him. :) 3) Taria Ceramicist "Why is my pottery warped so? I must discover the reason." Formation Acquired: Feather Guard Unique Role: Covert Ops (Chance to be targeted down (M)) Location: Termina (Taria's Workshop) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Protagonist) Recommended Use: Keep her as a mage. She's pretty damn good at it! How to Acquire: Urpina and Balmaint: Can't recruit. Leonard: When visiting Termina for the first time, visit EVERY LOCATION and ask about Ei Hanum. This includes Taria's Workshop, every town, and both the North and South Gates. Then go back to Taria's Workshop and speak to her. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Decline Taria's request to join. 2) Complete any Side Quests in Termina while in the middle of the recruiting process (e.g.: the burning crests, Raven Manor witch, etc.) 3) Visit the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary before completing the recruiting process. Taria: Main Character. 4) Balmaint Executioner "Sigfrei said he would reincarnate seven times. I have a hard time believing that, and yet..." Formation Acquired: Crooked Cross Unique Role: Executioner (Chance to be blocked/evaded down (S)/Sudden death resistance up (M)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan or Nangoon) Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Protagonist) Recommended Use: Depends on how much you like Axes. Between him, Marion, and Strumiknen, there is no shortage of lumberjacks in his story! In the original SaGa Scarlet Grace (Japan only), Balmaint had poor Dexterity, and many players switched him to Great Swords to take better advantage of his high Strength. Since his DEX is better in Ambitions, he won't miss nearly as much while chopping off heads, so dispense justice with impunity if you like! How to Acquire: Urpina and Taria: Can't recruit. Leonard: In Kei, BEFORE recruiting Marion, visit Castle Kohan and talk to Sigfrei and Arthur, and then go to Nangoon. Balmaint will wonder how you know Sigfrei and will join you. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: You may want to hold off on going to Nangoon to recruit Balmaint * * until after you recruit Adill in Part 3. See Adill's entry for more * * information. * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITION: Recruit Marion before going to Castle Kohan for the first time. If you recruit Marion and then go to Castle Kohan, then the Marion events will take priority over the Sigfrei events, preventing them from ever occurring in this Playthrough. Balmaint: Main Character. PROTAGONISTS' COMPANIONS (DEUTERAGONISTS): 1) Mondo Senior Retainer of House Julanius "It is my sworn duty to protect milady Urpina. Be you foe or friend, I shall not permit you to harm her!" Formation Acquired: Phoenix Dance Unique Role: The Unflinching (Poison Recovery Up (L)/Chance to be targeted up (M)) Location: Silmium (Rhonicum) for Urpina, varies for others Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: 6 Battles Can Send on Mission: No (Deuteragonist) Recommended Use: Can't go wrong with either sticking him with Spears or switching him to Bows. In Urpina's Story, the latter is tempting because of how terrible Zigor's stats are... How to Acquire: Urpina: Starting Character. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Requires a New Game+ with Urpina's Story complete: Complete the Mondo Side Quest by finding him in five (seemingly) random towns. Sometimes you may be asked to complete one of his requests. Sometimes you'll find one or more of Urpina's starting companions, and you may have to complete one of their requests. Mondo will join you after the
fifth event or if you have Urpina in your party, whichever comes first. FAILURE CONDITION: None. 2) Elisabeth Lady of House Adams "I seriously need to get it together--mostly because Leo's such an idiot." Formation Acquired: Double Trouble Unique Role: Astute Lass (Physical-attack damage up (M)/Chance to be targeted down (S)) Location: Yaxart for Leonard, varies for others Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Deuteragonist) Recommended Use: Just about anything! She doesn't have the greatest stats, but that Mobility will help immensely with just about any Weapon or Spell! How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Requires a New Game+ with Leonard's Story complete: Complete the Elisabeth Side Quest by finding her, one of Leo's starting companions, or a random pursuer in five (seemingly) random towns. If anyone asks if you know her, JUST SAY NO! She will join after the fifth event or if you have Leonard in your party, whichever one comes first. FAILURE CONDITION: Tell any pursuer or any of Leonard's starting companions that you know Elisabeth AND meet one of the FAILURE CONDITIONS for recruiting Leonard. The next Elisabeth event won't occur in this case unless Leonard's in your Party. Leonard: Starting Character. 3) Kahn Wanderer "Adventuring's better than dealin' with some stuffy guard dispute; there's less thinkin' and a lot more fightin'!" Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Breadwinner (Poison/sudden death resistance up (M)) Location: Termina for Taria, Thracini (Elhuacan) for Urpina, varies for others Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Deuteragonist) Recommended Use: Spears work pretty well for him. How to Acquire: Urpina: Two methods: A) In Chapter 1, once you reach Thracini, go to Elhuacan to speak to the Grand Empress Dowager. When asked if you need help, accept her request. B) (Confirmed by Zach Keene from the GameFAQs Message Boards): Requires a New Game+ with Taria's Story complete: If you decline the Grand Empress Dowager's offer in Method A) above, this will start the Kahn Side Quest and he can be recruited through that method, as mentioned for Leonard and Balmaint below... FAILURE CONDITION: In a first-time Playthrough (no carried-over data) or a New Game+ without Taria's Story complete, decline the Grand Empress Dowager's offer to help out. Leonard and Balmaint: Requires a New Game+ with Taria's Story complete: Complete the Kahn Side Quest by finding him in five (seemingly) random locations. He'll usually ask if you've met the Killers. Unlike the Lissa Side Quest, it's OK to say "Yes," especially if you have run into (and likely fought) them. After the fifth event, depending on how many times you've run into the Killers, Kahn may join you with or without a fight. If Victoria's in the party, Kahn will join you immediately. FAILURE CONDITION: None Taria: Starting Character. 4) Arthur Darlton Castle Kohan Law Clerk "You really believe Sigfrei will come back seven times? 'Cause I don't want to!" Formation Acquired: Unique Role: The Invincible (All resistances up (S)/Attack damage up (S)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) for Balmaint, varies for others Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (Deuteragonist) Recommended Use: Might as well keep him as a mage if you're Bal, since you won't get another one until after Part 2 is complete (Kreisa) or during Part 4 (Elysed). How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Taria: Requires a New Game+ with Balmaint's Story complete: Complete the Arthur Side Quest by finding him in five (seemingly) random locations. He'll usually ask you to fulfill some sketchy request. Usually it's OK to do so, but I personally tend to decline giving the Grand Empress Dowager anything he or any of his bodyguards procure in the Thracini region. If you're playing as Leonard, you may want to hold off on completing all five Arthur Events until Part 3, and have that event occur in Megdasse, as it's the only way Leonard can recruit Adill. See Adill's entry for more information. Arthur will join you after completing the fifth event or if Balmaint is in your party, whichever one comes first. FAILURE CONDITION: None URPINA'S STARTING CHARACTERS: ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: These characters are automatically available upon the start of * * Urpina's Story and are only available for her. * ******************************************************************************* 1) Beatrice House Julanius New Recruit "I'm aggressive and I don't mind being countered. Let me at 'em!" Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Queensguard (All resistances up (S)/Chance to be targeted up (S)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: That Acuity sucks. Other than that, she's an OK character to keep with Clubs at least until you get Yohman. Let her bust out a big one on the bench. Oh what a great feeling, indeed...I think. 2) Jamto House Julanius Heavy Infantry "I am your shield, milady. Don't hesitate to make me an easy target." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Guardsman (Weapon block rate up (M)/Chance to be targeted up (S)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Protector/Tank, and pretty good at it for a starting character. Mobility is horrible, but if you put him in the middle of a Phoenix Dance formation and spam Optical Slash...Offense and Defense are ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEE! 3) Nessa House Julanius Flanking Unit "Don't push yourself, milady. Fighting is our job; yours is to command." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Scout (Initial Position up (S)/Mobility up (M)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With that DEX and her Unique Role, she's a very serviceable Short Sword user, and will likely see a lot of use for a Chapter or two. 4) Solon House Julanius Rear Guard "It is my job to protect you, milady. Feel free to rest any time." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: The Shrewd (Paralysis/stun resistance up (M)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: 8 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: An INT of 12 is not bad, but not great either. Use him until you get the far superior Elysed. 5) Zigor House Julanius Infiltration Corps "Let us proceed with caution. The slow and the steady will emerge victorious." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Raider (Chance to be blocked/evaded down (M)/All resistances down (M)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Bench Warmer. Seriously. He's easily one of the bottom five characters stat-wise. If you really need an Archer, use him until you get Kahn or Tissisaaq, switch Mondo to Bows, and don't ever have this guy touch your Retinue again! Better yet, just switch Mondo to Bows right off the bat and go without a Spear user until you get Kahn or Tissi. LEONARD'S STARTING CHARACTERS: ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: These characters are automatically available upon the start of * * Leonard's Story and are only available for him. * ******************************************************************************* 1) Casper Elisabeth's Poison Taster? (ROFL) " " Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Location: Yaxart Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: DELICIOUS! Have him eat everything in sight on the bench. He's easily a bottom five character stat-wise. If you really want to use him, put that Endurance of 12 to use by making him a tank. Better yet, don't since Leo is FAR superior at tanking. Leo also has access to far superior Spear users like Chiago somewhat early. 2) Cecilia Elisabeth's Protege " " Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Location: Yaxart Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Dexterity 13 is pretty good for a starting character! "I'M SOOOOO STRONG!!!" Keep her with Bows. Endurance is horrible, but that OK. Protect her until you get a better Archer in your party, which unless that Archer's name is Mondo, may be a while. 3) Gabriel Elisabeth's Mentor " " Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Location: Yaxart Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Babysitting children while they're watching horror movies. "It's alright. Close your eyes." While he's not terrible, again, Leo is far superior. Endurance of 11 is not good for a Tank and Strength 11 is not that great for raw damage. You could switch him to Long Swords until you get a suitable replacement like Urpina. 4) Guinevere Elisabeth's Mentor " " Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Vixen Location: Yaxart Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Passing along that Transitory Staff to other Mages that are having trouble learning starter spells. Like Solon in Urpina's starting party, she has an INT of 12 and nothing else really going for her. Use her until you get Taria, Arthur, Victoria, or any other superior Mage. 5) Jerome Elisabeth's Errand Boy " " Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Location: Yaxart Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: His Unique Role makes him serviceable at best. Swap him out for Rico or Lewis when you can. TARIA'S STARTING CHARACTERS: ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: These characters are automatically available upon the start of * * Taria's Story and are only available for her. * ******************************************************************************* 1) Compass Killers Member "The key to battle is beautiful arcs, not straight lines." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Scimitar Expert (Slash damage up (XL) Location: Termina (Schut) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Killer Compass' stats are not great, but that unique role (Slash Damage XL!!!!) makes up for a lot of shortcomings! Pair it up with Champion Duelist for a lot of hurt, but that is a lot of work to put into a starter character... 2) House Killers Member "People might hate me, but they certainly don't mind that I get rid of people they hate even more than me." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Provocateur (Chance to be targeted up, Dexterity up) Location: Termina (Schut) Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Change him into a Protector/Tank and take advantage of that unique role. Killer House is better at tanking with a Club, Great Sword, or Long Sword. Let Daddy Lighthouse punch things, since you get him pretty early with Taria. 3) Queen Killers Member "A rival, is it? Well, don't expect this queen to surrender her throne." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Heart Attacker (Pierce damage up (XL)) Location: Termina (Schut) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Killer Queen has an insane role like her fellow female member Compass (Pierce Damage XL!!!!)! Might not be a bad idea to switch your Queen to Bows! 4) Snail Killers Member "Some call me slow, but they don't get that I'm actually just steady and reliable." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Vanguard (All resistances up (M)/Initial position down (M)) Location: Termina (Schut) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: What the hell is a Killer Snail? Fitting his name, he is slow. You could keep him with Clubs and have him be a Protector/Tank alongside House. 5) Tomato Killers Member "I'm not called Tomato 'cause my face is flushed--it's 'cause it's what I crush my enemies into!" Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Crusher (Blunt damage up (XL) Location: Termina (Schut) Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Attack...of the Killer Tomatoes! If he hits, squish! (Blunt Damage XL!!!!!) The problem is that low Dexterity of 8. Equipment can only help so much, but if you can get past that problem, he can do some INSANE damage with Unbridled Frenzy!!!! BALMAINT'S STARTING CHARACTERS: ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: These characters are automatically available upon the start of * * Balmaint's Story and are only available for him (with the exception of * * Marion, which will be mentioned in her entry) * ******************************************************************************* 1) Clover Arthur's Bodyguard "My parents died because of Sigfrei. Everything else is just business." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Hard Worker (Sleep recovery up (L)/Strength up (M)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: That DEX of 13 lends well to Short Swords and Bows, but the rest of her stats are just bad. According to Synyard from the GameFAQs message boards, the three dual-wield techs scale with both STR and DEX, which explains why the Japanese Wikis recommend having her dual-wield. Since Bal is short on Long Sword users, you might as well get the most bang for your buck, have her learn the five required techs, and go ham, but like Compass, that is a lot of work to put into a starting character... 2) Isaac Arthur's Bodyguard "Arthur's covered up a bunch of stuff for me, so I owe him. I've gotta do this." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: First Responder (Initial position up (S)/Acuity up (M)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Bench Warmer. That ACU of 13 is nice, but the rest of his stats are pure Yaxartian Yak Poo. This seems to be a theme with Balmaint's starters: one high stat at 13, the rest are bleh. Since Colleen's available early, you'll be benching this guy sooner rather than later. 3) Marion Arthur's Bodyguard (for Balmaint) or Arthur's Girl (for other Protagonists) "Name's Marion. Don't forget it, 'cause I'll die of sadness if you do." (Arthur's Bodyguard) "My name is Marion, so stop calling me somebody's 'girl.' Oh, and I love being spoiled!" (Arthur's Girl) Formation Acquired: None (Arthur's Bodyguard) or Lumberjack (Arthur's Girl) Unique Role: The Overbearing (Chance to be targeted up (M)/Intelligence up (M)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) for Bodyguard or Kei (northern hut) for Girl Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: 6 Battles Can Send on Mission: Arthur's Bodyguard: Yes; Arthur's Girl: No (can leave Leonard's Party) Recommended Use: Stats are decent enough for any offensive role except for magic, in which her INT is horrible (not that you couldn't tell without actually looking at the numbers ^_^). ******************************************************************************* * NOTE: Arthur's Bodyguard Marion and Arthur's Girl Marion are treated as two * * separate characters, even though they are functionally the same character. * * Any techniques learned on one version of Marion will not carry over to the * * other or vice versa. * ******************************************************************************* How to Acquire Arthur's Girl in non-Balmaint Playthroughs: Urpina, Leonard, and Taria: Ladies require the Phoenix Common Quest. For Leonard, you may want to go to Castle Kohan and trigger the Sigfrei event there first before going through these steps to avoid locking yourself out of recruiting Balmaint: 1) Use the Phoenix Feather to have the bird perch itself on it for a bit. (Leonard only needs to approach the Great Arch for this to happen) 2) Examine the Great Arch and battle some Ignis Spirits. 3) Examine the dead guy near the Great Arch and you'll get 1/2 of a mask. 4) Next, approach the Wishing Tree and it will get shot with an arrow carrying a letter. 5) Read the letter and it will instruct you to go to the northern hut. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: If you're playing as Leonard, this is the last chance you have to * * go to Castle Kohan and trigger the Sigfrei event required for recruit- * * ing Balmaint. Once you finish the steps below, Marion will join you and * * the next time you go to Castle Kohan, Marion's events will occur, which * * will prevent the Sigfrei event from ever occurring this Playthrough. * *************************************************************************** 6) Go to the hut and fight Rico and some Nangoon gang members. Once finished, you'll rescue Marion. 7) After the fight, Marion will join you. She will join Urpina and Taria permanently, but she'll only join Leonard temporarily. If you want her permanently with Leonard, simply put her in your Retinue before entering Castle Kohan and she will stay (even after revisiting Kohan). Otherwise she will leave your party. FAILURE CONDITION: None for joining initially. However, if you're Leonard and you visit Castle Kohan without her in your Retinue, she will leave and you won't be able to get her back (a pseudo-failure condition, I guess). 4) Patricia Arthur's Bodyguard "Let's just say I'm Arthur's secretary and leave it at that. Oh, and feel free to ask for anything." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: The Collected (Confusion/frenzy recovery up (L)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Hmmm...13 MOB and 12 INT, rest of her stats are meh. DEX of 10 and ACU of 9 are not that hot for Short Swords, especially when trying to get Apid Venom's Poison, Mesmerize's Sleep, or Shocking Rush's Paralyze to proc. You could make up for some of that with equipment, though. 5) Robert Arthur's Bodyguard "Touch anyone you like aside from Arthur. It's my job to protect him." Formation Acquired: None Unique Role: Guardian (Chance to be targeted up (M)/Endurance up (M)) Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: His stats are actually not that bad for a Martial Artist. Can also switch him to Clubs and have him be a Protector/Tank. OTHER CHARACTERS: 1) Adill King of Walomir "I will unite the world's powers and forge a new empire greater than the old." Formation Acquired: All For One Unique Role: Leader (Initial BP up (M)/Max BP down (L)) Location: Megdasse (Walomir Settlement) Specialty: Bow LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Keep him as an archer. How to Acquire: Urpina: Four methods: A) Chapter 1 Antonius Rescue Route, Chapter 2 Sigfrei: Once in Megdasse, head straight to Walomir and converse with Adill. Go to the Walomir glyph and proceed with the events (choose to fight the tornado when Sigfrei asks). After the events, Adill will join. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: Don't do this method if you're going to do Chapter 3 Scarlet * * Shards. Otherwise you won't be able to enter Hibernia for the rest * * of the story! * *********************************************************************** B) Chapter 1 either Antonius Route, Chapter 2 Sigfrei, Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards: In Chapter 2, visit the Kaikow Settlement and fight Sigfrei at the Kaikow glyph. You may want to get the hell out of Megdasse at this point to avoid accidentally triggering one of many Failure Conditions. In Chapter 3, visit the Walomir Settlement and you'll find that Adill has the Scarlet Shard, and you'll be asked to complete the other glyphs. Light up the Walomir, Nyu, and Highsha glyphs, and the final glyph in the far east will appear and light up. Go to the far eastern glyph and Adill will meet you there. Accept his request to conspire with him. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: Doing this method will prematurely end the Scarlet Shards * * Common Quest, Urpina will conspire with Adill for the rest of the * * Story, and this will alter the Endgame and Ending! * *********************************************************************** C) Chapter 2 Sigfrei, Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards: DO NOT visit the Walomir or Kaikow Settlements in Chapter 2! In Chapter 3, visit Walomir and you'll find that Adill has the Scarlet Shard. Unlike Method B), the game knows that it's impossible to light up all the glyphs at this point, so Adill will ask Urpina to be by his side right away. Choose to conspire with him. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: Doing this method will prematurely end the Scarlet Shards * * Common Quest, Urpina will conspire with Adill for the rest of the * * Story, and this will alter the Endgame and Ending! * *********************************************************************** D) Requires a New Game+ with Balmaint's Story complete: trigger one of the Arthur Side Quest events in Megdasse while NOT in the middle of the Sigfrei or Scarlet Shards Common Quests. This will allow you to recruit Adill without affecting the ending or conspiring with him (in some cases, the game will have "two Adills"). See the "Arthur Darlton" entry for more information. Specifically, you will need to go to each Megdasse Settlement first BEFORE inspecting caves. If you go cave hunting too soon and find Adill, he will NOT join you! (save your game the moment you get into Megdasse and you see Arthur standing at Bullio Gate so you can go back to it in case you find Adill too soon). FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR EACH METHOD: A) 1) In Chapter 2, visit Kaikow before Walomir. This will trigger the Sigfrei events there instead. 2) In Chapter 1, don't choose the Antonius Rescue Route, as Chapter 1 will end before meeting Adill. 3) In Chapter 2 Sigfrei, refuse to fight the tornado at the Walomir glyph. B) 1) In Chapter 2 Sigfrei, refuse to fight Sigfrei at the Kaikow glyph. (this may lead you to a possible successful Method C, though) 2) In Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards, go back to Walomir before lighting all five glyphs and meeting Adill at the far eastern glyph. 3) In Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards, at the far eastern glyph, when Adill asks Urpina to be by his side, choose the option "Adill, you're a fool." C) 1) In Chapter 2, visit the Walomir Settlement (you might be able to salvage this if you meet the success conditions for Method A) 2) In Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards, refuse Adill's request for Urpina to be by his side. D) 1) Finish the Arthur Side Quest without one of the events taking place in Megdasse. 2) During the Arthur Side Quest in Megdasse, fight in the caves before inspecting ALL of the Settlements. Leonard: Trigger one of the Arthur Side Quest events in Megdasse during Part 3 (after visiting the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary). It will NOT trigger before then! FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Complete the Arthur Side Quest without one of the events taking place in Megdasse (can happen if in a hurry to complete all five before Part 3 or if Balmaint is recruited, which causes the quest to end premature- ly). 2) During the Arthur Side Quest in Megdasse, fight in the caves before inspecting ALL of the Settlements. Taria: Two methods: A) In any Scarlet Shards Chapter, visit the Walomir Settlement and select "Let's do this together" while speaking to Adill (by far the easiest method) B) Trigger one of the Arthur Side Quest events in Megdasse while NOT in the middle of the Scarlet Shards Common Quest (only recommended if doing the Earth Serpent and Sigfrei Common Quests in any order). FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR EACH METHOD: A) Do not select "Let's do this together" when speaking to Adill (may still be possible to do Method B) B) 1) Finish the Arthur Side Quest without one of the events taking place in Megdasse. 2) During the Arthur Side Quest in Megdasse, fight in the caves before inspecting ALL of the Settlements. Balmaint: Can't recruit. 2) Aleksandra Traveling Woman "Without the power of the Spirituals, I'm just an ordinary woman who probably won't be much help." Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Spiritualist (Elemental damage up (XL)/HP down (L)) Location: Varies (Region where the fourth Scarlet Shard is found) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With that INT score? Obviously stick with magic!!! How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. Taria: Complete Chapter 2: Scarlet Shards. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Do not select Scarlet Shards for Chapter 2. 2) Decline choice to have Aleksandra join once Chapter 2 Scarlet Shards ends. 3) Angle Ship Captain " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Mare Ilfee (New Wise) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: 8 Rounds Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Given her stats, she can go in a number of directions: Bows, Axes, Spears, Long Swords (dual-wield if you want to put in the work) or stick with Short Swords. Overall a great character! How to Acquire: Urpina: In Chapter 1 after the events in Sugar Castle Lighthouse, go back to New Wise and have your Daddy...I mean Lewis Darling guide you to Edinport. Exit and re-enter Edinport, choose to either accept or decline Socrates' offer to join (skip this if you held off until later in the game and you have Nolan, which prevents recruiting Socrates by Palette Swap Rule), exit and re-enter again, and sail back to New Wise. Converse in New Wise. FAILURE CONDITIONS: Decline option to recruit Angle. Leonard: After entering the Mare Ilfee from Cerenaif (Zegna), follow the steps for recruiting Lewis Darling (see his entry for details). Next, go to the Middle Road Lighthouse and clean off the Phoenix nest. Now go to the Sugar Creek Lighthouse and defeat Savnok's minions to clear the plague. Finally, go back to New Wise and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Enter the Mare Ilfee from Thracini instead of Cerenaif for the first time. 2) Visit the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary before visiting the Mare Ilfee. 3) Decline option to recruit Angle when conversing. Taria: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of Compass). Balmaint: During 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started during Part 6A, Urpina Kidnapping Route, go to the Mare Ilfee through Cerenaif (Zegna). After the Urpina events, have Lewis Darling guide you to Edinport. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start Intermission 2 Earth Serpent in a way that prevents the Urpina Kidnapping Route from occurring (sooner than Part 6A, keep Maximus in party, etc.). 2) Enter the Mare Ilfee from Thracini instead of Cerenaif for the first time. 3) Decline option to recruit Angle when conversing. 4) Antonius Heir to House Julanius "Protecting House Julanius must take precedence, for there are many who wish us harm." Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Seasoned Duelist (Enables dual wield/Slash damage up (L)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Are you kidding?!! Let Julanius Dual Wielders Dual Wield! How to Acquire: Urpina: Chapter 1, continue down the Antonius Rescue Route in Old Wise and the Sugar Castle Lighthouse (Chapter 1 ends in Cindrea if you made the right choices): At the beginning of Chapter 3, when asked to choose between Hilda, Maximus, and Antonius, choose Antonius. (not recommended if you want to acquire all characters in the fewest number of playthroughs--Hilda is exclusive to Urpina while Antonius is not) FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) End the Antonius Rescue Route in Sugar Castle Lighthouse in Chapter 1 (Chapter 1 ended in Thracini). 2) Chose Maximus or Hilda at the beginning of Chapter 3. Leonard: Can't recruit. Taria: Chapter 3 Earth Serpent started in Rhonicum: Fight the Serpent once, then go to Azhuacan and talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers. From there go to Marigan Temple, win the double-encounter and you'll get the Saw. Now go back to Rhonicum, but don't defeat the Serpent yet! Go straight to Silmium and you'll see that it's under attack. Defeat the Earth Golems. Antonius will join you to pursue Urpina's kidnappers. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start Chapter 3 Earth Serpent in a region other than Rhonicum. No matter what you do, the Urpina Rescue Route won't start this way (see Maximus' entry for exactly what happens. 2) After getting the Saw and returning to Rhonicum, defeat the Earth Serpent instead of going straight to Silmium. Balmaint: 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started in Megdasse during Part 6A: Fight the Serpent once, then go to Azhuacan, talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers, and choose to rely on the Julanius family. Now go to Silmium in Rhonicum and speak to Urpina and Mondo, who will get Maximus to join your party. Do NOT put Maximus in your retinue! Now go back to Azhuacan. From here you have two Methods to pull this off correctly: A) Talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers. In exchange for the Emperor's Saw, have Maximus dedicate himself to the Holy Republic. You'll be told to meet up with Antonius in Silmium. Go to Rhonicum and you'll see Silmium under attack. Defeat the Earth Golems. Antonius will join you to pursue Urpina's kidnappers. B) Talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers and choose NOT to have Maximus dedicate himself to the Holy Republic. From here you can go to the Marigan Temple and take the trial (a single encounter) to get the Saw. After the battle, Maximus will leave your party to hold off the Holy Republic Soldiers and will tell you to meet up with Antonius in Silmium. Go to Rhonicum and you'll see Silmium under attack. Defeat the Earth Golems. Antonius will join you to pursue Urpina's kidnappers. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start Intermission 2 Earth Serpent in a region other than Megdasse. 2) Start Intermission 2 Earth Serpent sooner than Part 6A. 3) Choose to steal the Emperor's Saw yourself instead of relying on House Julanius. 4) Have Maximus in your Retinue on the return trip to Azhuacan and talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers. You won't get a choice to dedicate Maximus to the Holy Republic, which pretty much puts you on what seems to be Method B) above, except after Marigan's Trial, you'll actually fight off the Holy Republic soldiers with Maximus in your party in a second encounter. Once that encounter is finished, you'll have the Saw and Maximus, but no option to recruit Antonius or go down the Urpina Kid- napping Route. 5) Arch Witch Apex of the Witch Hierarchy "I have been Arch Witch for too long now. But alas, my successor abandoned her duty." Formation Acquired: Poison Pill Unique Role: Arch Witch (Focus up (M)) Location: Azhuacan (North Market) or Southeast Boundary (Hole of Chaos) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Look at that INT score and ask me that question again... How to Acquire: Leonard: Two methods: A) Perform the steps necessary to recruit Tsubaki (see "Tsubaki" entry for more information) up to the point where you are talking to her at the Birdman Village in the Southeast Boundary. Go to southeast corner where the fake Phoenix Nest is and you see the real Phoenix Nest across from it and press the Confirm button to trigger an event. Now go to the Hole of Chaos and the Arch Witch will offer to teleport you to the Corner Island at the cost of one Scarlet Shard. DECLINE the offer! Tsubaki will butt in the conversation, Leo will get pissed, and you will have to fight her! Once beaten, the Arch Witch will offer to teleport you to the island where the real Phoenix nest is at no charge. Accept her offer and she will teleport you AND Tsubaki there. Defeat the Phoenix and then the Arch Witch will offer to teleport you back, but at the cost of a Scarlet Shard. Choose to fight the Witch instead. After the fight, she will join you. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: You will not be able to acquire Kumi's ship with this method, * * thus not being able to fight the Scarlet Monster or acquire any of * * the items requested by the Imperial Library survey hut in the South-* * east Boundary in this Playthrough. * *********************************************************************** Leonard Method B), Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: In the North Market, have the Arch Witch train your characters 18 times. While this is a grind, the easiest way to do this is to fight in the Battle Arena for a while, going back to the North Market every 5-6 fights. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: If you want to recruit Tsubaki, you'll need to recruit her before * * recruiting the Arch Witch. Otherwise Tsubaki will no longer be recruit- * * able. * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITIONS: Leonard Method A) Acquire Kumi's ship. The Hole of Chaos dialog will change to the Arch Witch requesting ingredients to make something for you. Universal Method: None. 6) Armored Maiden ???? "..." Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Gradion (where the baby is normally located southwest of Testika) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: This maiden can dual-wield. Let her do it! How to Acquire: Urpina and Leonard: Can't recruit. Taria and Balmaint: Chapter 3 Earth Serpent started in Rhonicum for Taria, 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started in Megdasse after Part 6 for Balmaint: Follow the steps for recruiting Antonius (see his entry for details), as this will put you on the Urpina Kidnapping Route. From Silmium in Rhonicum, go northeast to Parm to enter Cerenaif. Go to Zegna and choose to leave now instead of waiting for a captain. In the Mare Ilfee from New Wise, go to Old Wise. You will need to END the Urpina Rescue Route by choosing the proper choices in Old Wise and the Sugar Castle Lighthouse. Now go finish off the Earth Serpent with the Emperor's Saw either in Rhonicum (if you're Taria) or Megdasse (if you're Balmaint) (you may want to stop in Elhuacan to recruit Lord Stabiae first--see his entry for details). With the Serpent defeated, go to Gradion and inspect the spot southwest of Testika where the baby normally is (or if it's still there, pick up the baby, leave Gradion, and come back to the baby's spot). Accept what seems to be the Armored Maiden's "offer" to join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Recruit Maximus and choose to keep him (usually by one of the Failure Conditions for recruiting Antonius). This prevents the Urpina Kid- napping route from occurring. 2) Start the Earth Serpent Common Quest in the wrong Region or during the wrong Chapter or Intermission. 3) Start the 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent Common Quest too soon as Balmaint. 4) Continue down the Urpina Rescue Route through choices in Old Wise and/or Sugar Castle Lighthouse (or through the "Karen/Jerkass Method": defeat the Earth Serpent in Rhonicum or Megdasse immediately after recruiting Antonius). 5) Decline the Armored Maiden's "offer" to join. 7) Aslana Melek Artistic Savant "Perfect body control creates ze perfect sculpture. Now show me what you can do!" Formation Acquired: Black Sheep Unique Role: The War-Torn (Delay effects up (L)) Location: Bicyniro (Aslana's Studio) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: I'm not sure if I would use her as a Martial Artist, especially given how difficult it is to glimmer all Martial Arts and the fact that she may not get a lot of usage across multiple playthroughs with having TWO Common Quest requirements! Her stats seem to lean more toward being a Mage, an Archer, or a Short Sword user. For such a perfectionist, her Acuity is HORRIBLE! She's one of those "statistically ironic" characters that Kawazu loves to have in SaGa games (like resident fatman Roy in Unlimited Saga being the LIGHTEST character in that game at ZERO weight!). How to Acquire: Urpina and Taria: Choose Sigfrei for one Chapter and Scarlet Shards for another (it doesn't matter which order). For the Sigfrei Chapter, you will need to trigger the Common Quest from somewhere OTHER THAN Bicyniro (otherwise the Rumor flags get a little weird)--for Urpina you can trigger from Cerenaif; for Taria you can trigger from Normi and, if necessary, refuse Sasha's request to hunt for Scarlet Shards. After that, you can leave Cerenaif/Normi and head to Bicyniro. For Chapter 2 (again, if it's Sigfrei, make sure you follow the above instructions first), go to Bicyniro, then head southeast to Caprese and Converse. This should start the rumor about people being turned into stone. Believe the rumor, enter Aslana's Studio, and go through the events. Now GET THE HELL OUT OF BICYNIRO! (really, you don't want to trigger any more rumors. Finish the Sigfrei or Scarlet Shard events elsewhere.) For Chapter 3 (again, if Siggy, start in a region other than Bicyniro first), go to Bicyniro and head straight to Aslana's Studio. She'll offer to join now. FAILURE CONDITIONS (there are a lot, so be careful!): 1) End Chapter 2 Sigfrei or Scarlet Shards before triggering the Aslana events. 2) Converse in Caprese about rumors before starting Chapter 2 Sigfrei or Scarlet Shards (you'll get the Bigfoot rumor instead). 3) Start Chapter 2 or 3 Sigfrei in Bicyniro instead of another region first (flags get messed up, and if you pursue a rumor in Caprese, it will be Bigfoot). 4) Refuse to believe the Caprese rumor about people being turned into stone. 5) Refuse to enter Aslana's Studio. 6) Run out of rumors in Bicyniro before Chapter 3 by going through all of them. 7) Complete OR fail the Scarlet Shards or Sigfrei Event in Bicyniro during Chapter 3 before going to Aslana's Studio. 8) Refuse Aslana's offer to join. Leonard: Can't recruit (can only trigger the first Aslana event in his Story). Balmaint: With a NON-Scarlet Shards first Intermission Playthrough (in other words, first Intermission needs to be Earth Serpent or Phoenix), during Part 5 of the Main Quest (Rhonicum), go south to Bicyniro and immediately go to Caprese and Converse. The rumor should be about people being turned into stone. Believe the rumor, enter Aslana's Studio, and go through the events. Now go back to Caprese and Converse to start the second Rumor of the chain. Inspect Pescara and choose to believe the first rumor. You'll see what appears to be Sigfrei before entering town. When back outside of town, inspect Pescara again. This time, choose NOT to believe the rumor! Balmaint will say that Sigfrei is not in Bicyniro (this will save enough rumors for Scarlet Shards) and you will automatically be taken back to Rhonicum. Go northeast to Cerenaif to continue with Part 5. During Part 6 or 6A, choose Scarlet Shards for your second Intermission Common Quest (trigger from Normi or Bicyniro; you can trigger from Jusitania if first Intermission was Phoenix). Now go back to Bicyniro if you're not there already, use the Pendant to see the numerous places where the shard can be, and then head straight to Aslana's Studio. She'll offer to join now. FAILURE CONDITIONS (there are a lot, so be careful!): 1) Complete the Scarlet Shards Common Quest during Intermission 1 (oops). 2) End Part 5 in Bicyniro before triggering the Aslana events. 3) Get sent back to Rhonicum by going through and not believing enough rumors for Balmaint to say "Sigfrei is not in Bicyniro" before trigger- ing the Aslana events. 4) Refuse to believe the Caprese rumor about people being turned into stone. 5) Refuse to enter Aslana's Studio. 6) Run out of rumors in Bicyniro before Intermission 2 Scarlet Shards by going through all of them during Part 5. 7) Complete OR fail the Scarlet Shards Event during Intermission 2 before going to Aslana's Studio. 8) During Intermission 2, tell Sasha you're giving up on finding the Scarlet Shards before visiting Aslana's Studio. 9) Refuse Aslana's offer to join. 8) Black-Robed Figure ???? "..." Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Gradion (where the baby is normally located southwest of Testika) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Another dual-wielding mute. Let em do it. How to Acquire: Urpina: In Chapter 1 when you are in Old Wise, you will need to choose to END the Antonius Rescue Route (Chapter 1 ends in Thracini instead of Cindrea if you made the correct choices in Old Wise and Sugar Castle Lighthouse). In Chapter 3, start whatever Common Quest you want first, then go to Gradion, pick up the baby, leave the Region, and come back to the same spot. If you end up fighting Camelia, finish that battle, leave Gradion, come back, and inspect the baby spot again. Accept the Black-Robed Figure's "offer" to join. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: After recruiting the Black-Robed Figure, if you want to save the * * Baby Quest for later, drop the baby off in any location other than * * Testika or the Adamas Temple. The baby will be abandoned by whomever * * you left it with and it will be back in the same spot. How cruel, * * right? * * * * If you drop the baby off in Testika, the Baby Quest ends, and if you * * chose Scarlet Shards for Chapter 3, you'll have to get the Shard (and * * Francis if you want) through the Baby-less Method. * * * * If you drop the baby off at the Adamas Temple and you chose Chapter 3 * * Scarlet Shards, you won't be able to get the Shard with the baby-- * * you'll have to drop it off in Testika and use the Baby-less Method. * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITION: 1) Continue down the Antonius Rescue Route through choices in Old Wise and/or Sugar Castle Lighthouse. 2) Decline the Black-Robed Figure's "offer" to join. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 9) Chiago Lisboa Marquis of Parm "There is SO much fun and beauty in the unusual, don't you think? Aha! Aha ha ha ha!" Formation Acquired: Momentum Unique Role: Stalwart (Physical-attack damage up (XL)/HP down (L)) Location: Rhonicum or Cerenaif (Parm) Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Look at that Dex!!! Either Axes, Bows, Short Swords, or keep him on Spears! Be careful with his Unique Role, as that makes him a bit of a paper tiger. How to Acquire: Urpina: Can't recruit. Leonard: Go to Castle Parm before Part 3 (reaching the Northeast Boundary). FAILURE CONDITION: Reach the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary before going to Parm. Taria: Chiago is forced to join while entering Parm from Cerenaif in Chapter 1. Balmaint: During Part 5 (Rhonicum), go to Castle Parm. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: You may want to go to Bicyniro and follow the steps in Aslana * * Melek's entry first so that you can unlock both Bicyniro and Cerenaif. * * Otherwise you can only unlock one of the two regions. * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITION: Finish Part 5 (Rhonicum) in Bicyniro instead of Cerenaif. 10) Chichi Muros Woman "Is this also a trick of the fae? Hmm... I wonder where you will take me?" Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Blacksmith's Daughter (Increases chance of Adamas' Strength) Location: Marchiam Ria (Muros) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: 4 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Her Strength is not that great, so she may be better off with Bows or Short Swords. Then again 12 Dex might be OK for improving an Axe's accuracy... How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Go to Marchiam Ria (Muros) WITHOUT Kreisa being recruited (Palette Swap Rule). FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Recruit Kreisa. 2) Decline Chichi's offer to join. 11) Colleen Owtie Resident "Tea shop waitress is my cover. I'm actually a secret agent of House Yanyouji!" Formation Acquired: Swiftshot Unique Role: Herbalist (Increases frequency of Kada's Comfort) Location: Kei or Maurehua (Owtie Harbor) Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Keep Tea Party Karen on Bows. Gives Taria something that her team lacks for a while (provided you didn't switch Queen or anyone else to Bows and you chose Chapter 2 Sigfrei), and is an upgrade from Isaac in a Balmaint Playthrough. How to Acquire: Urpina: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Nessa). Leonard: Can't recruit. Taria: Chapter 2 or 3 Sigfrei, Prayer Tower Quest: go to Kilik and talk to the resident about issues between House Erakleos and Maurehua. Next, go to the southern bridge and trigger the events there (recruit Strumiknen if you wish). Once finished with the Prayer Tower Quest, go back to Owtie Arbor and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Do not go to Kilik while the Prayer Tower Quest is in progress. 2) Do not trigger the dispute at the southern bridge. Balmaint: During Part 1 of the Main Quest (Maurehua), go to Kilik and talk to the resident about issues between House Erakleos and Maurehua. Next, go to the southern bridge and trigger the events there (recruit Strumiknen if you wish). Once finished with the Prayer Tower Quest, go back to Owtie Arbor and Converse. FAILURE CONDITION: 1) Do not go to Kilik while the Prayer Tower Quest is in progress. 2) Do not trigger the dispute at the southern bridge. 12) Elysed Lady of House Gwynese "The art we call magic is a dangerous ritual that involves entrusting one's body to the Spirituals." Formation Acquired: Petalstorm Unique Role: The Popular (Chance to be targeted down (S)/Sleep Resistance Up (M)) Location: Azhuacan for Urpina, Hibernia for others Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: 6 Battles Can Send on Mission: No (can leave Urpina's Party) Recommended Use: Dat Magic How to Acquire: Urpina: Chapter 1: When in Azhuacan for the first time fighting the Earth Serpent and Golem battles, you may get "backup" in the form of a Call Lightning spell. After the battles, you should see Elysed on the map. Talk to her, and literally beg her to join--do not apologize, keep being a pest about it. FAILURE CONDITION: Be a pansy and apologize for being a bother. Leonard: In Hibernia, DO NOT GO TO TEACH NA MACHA to chase down the Scarlet Shard! Instead:
1) Help out the soldiers at the Grove of Silence with fighting off the Earth Golems. 2) Now go to all three of the outer houses (Ceobhran, Makulilkali, and Fomoire) and Converse so they can give you permission to enter the Grove of Silence. 3) Next, go to the Grove and Converse. Lord Gwynese gets pissed off because Scarlet Shard + Grove = Very Bad Things Typically Happen. 4) NOW you can use the Scarlet Shard from the Belongings Menu, see the shooting star fall to Teach Na Macha, and then head there. 5) Fight the three battles there, and then find out that the Shard is gone. 6) Go back to the three houses and Converse. On the third house, Lissa thinks they're lying about the shard. DO NOT call out the lie-- otherwise you'll get the Shard and no Elysed. 7) Finally, go back to the Grove of Silence. You'll find that Elysed ganked the Shard herself. Choose to have her join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: Hooo boy, there are a lot: 1) Go to Teach Na Macha right off the bat for the Shard 2) Don't help out the soldiers fight off the Golems 3) Don't go to all three houses, the Grove of Silence, Teach Na Macha, or the three houses again 4) Call out the last house's BS, fight them, and get the Shard 5) Refuse Elysed's request to join. You'll fight her and get the Natura Weapon instead. Taria: Can't recruit Balmaint: During Part 4 (Hibernia), Elysed will ask to join. FAILURE CONDITION: Refuse Elysed's request to join. 13) Erreich Fisherman " " Formation Acquired: Sweeping Strikes Unique Role: Location: Termina (a bit south-southeast of the Mare Termina) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Decent swordsman. Might as well keep him that way. How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Perform all but the last step to recruit Kreisa (see her entry for more information). On the final step, call her out for being a witch/fiend/whatever (or have Chichi in your party, and it won't matter what you choose--gotta love that Palette Swap Rule...). After fighting Kreisa, talk to Erreich and have him join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Complete the final step to have Kreisa join your party. 2) Decline choice to have Erreich join. Leonard: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Jerome). 14) Francis Imperial Library Third-Level Clerk "Harnessing the world's great powers will make you stronger than an emperor!" Formation Acquired: Black Sheep Unique Role: Explorer (Paralysis/sleep/stun resistance up (M)) Location: Gradion (that hut in the middle of the forest) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Keep him as a Mage. How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Scarlet Shard Common Quest (doesn't matter which Chapter for the ladies, but Balmaint will need to wait until at least Part 4 (Hibernia) so that Gradion can be included in the Quest), Baby Quest: Two methods: A) Baby method: 1) Use heirloom (Ibex Ring, Hairpin, Pendant) from the Belongings Menu. Pick up the baby from that spot. 2) Go to Testika and ask about the Scarlet Shard. DO NOT drop off the baby at the orphanage yet! 3) Go to one of the towns (Sanhigh, Yumen, either part of Bicornia) or Pixkimarigan and ask about the Scarlet Shards. The person you ask will likely turn crackhead on you and result in a fight. 4) Now go to the Forest Hut and fight the monsters. 5) Talk to Francis. He'll say "Oooh, a baby!" and then say that the time is not right. 6) Now drop the baby off somewhere OTHER than Testika or the Adamas Temple (you can fight more crackheads if you want, but you'll need to give the baby to one of them by selecting "Ask about the baby" and, being the ever so responsible person you are, leave the baby with that person). The idea is to make sure you do NOT have the baby with you when you talk to Francis again, and you don't leave the baby with someone that ends the Baby Quest permanently (unless you want to do Method B)). ******************************************************************* * NOTE: If you drop the baby off at the Testika orphanage, the * * Baby Quest Ends, and you'll have to do Method B) below. If you * * drop the baby off at the Adamas Temple, you won't be able to * * get the Shard without retrieving the baby at the usual spot and * * dropping it off at the Testika orphanage, which means Method B) * * again. * ******************************************************************* 7) Now go back to the Forest Hut. Francis will be fascinated by your quest to destroy the Scarlet Shards and will join. From here you can finish getting the Shard (Adamas Temple, then go to mine with baby, repeat until you get shard, then drop off baby at the orphanage). B) Baby-less method: 1) Use heirloom (Ibex Ring, Hairpin, Pendant) from the Belongings Menu. Pick up the baby from that spot. 2) Go to Testika and ask about the Scarlet Shard. This time, go ahead and leave the baby at the orphanage. 3) Go to one of the towns or Pixkimarigan and ask about the Scarlet Shards. Said person will likely go crackhead on you and you will have to fight. 4) Now go BACK to Testika and ask the priest if there was anything peculiar about the baby you left there--particularly if it had a Scarlet Shard. 5) Now defeat the monsters around the Forest Hut. 6) Go in the hut, talk to Francis, and have him join. From here you can finish getting the Shard (Adamas Temple, then go to mine, repeat until you get shard. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Obtain the Scarlet Shard before completing either method. 2) Perform any of the steps of either method in the wrong order. 3) Decline Francis' offer to join. Leonard: 1) Use Scarlet Shard from the Belongings Menu. Pick up the baby from that spot. 2) Go to Testika and ask about the Scarlet Shard. DO NOT drop off the baby at the orphanage! 3) Leave Gradion and return 4) Go to West Bicornia. Bandits want to fight. 5) After the fight, fight the monsters at the forest hut. Go into the hut and talk to Francis. 6) Now go to Yumen and give the baby to the man there in exchange for the Scarlet Shard. 7) Go back to the forest hut and talk to Francis again. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Visit Francis before doing Step 3 above--either he won't be there or he'll do his usual warning about the baby, in which then a revisit may result in having to fight him. 2) Drop off the baby at the orphanage. 3) Decline Francis' offer to join. 15) Giselle Twai Dancer " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Yaxart (Twai) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: She does the job with Short Swords. Her stats are similar to Nessa's, so there are better options out there. How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: A very easy recruit--during the Yaxart Pilgrimage Quest, find and clean up the True Uzume Shrine. Go back to Twai and Converse. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline choice to have Giselle join. 16) Griffin "Sprite" "Sprite? Ha! I'm no sprite--and there's no place for such mad delusions in martial arts!" Formation Acquired: Momentum Unique Role: Instructor (Raises allies' skill levels to match your own/Disables shield blocking) Location: Varies, but usually Ria (Coruna or Abandoned Village) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With high Skill levels in EVERY type, he can do just about anything! Might be worth a try using him exactly as what he says he is... a Martial Artist. How to Acquire: Urpina: Two methods: A) In Chapter 1, start the Dual Wield Side Quest. Talk to Griffin in Coruna and then in the Abandoned Village. Once you finally get the Novice Duelist role, go back to the Abandoned Village and have Griffin join you. FAILURE CONDITION: Don't talk to Griffin in Coruna or the Abandoned Village before getting the Novice Duelist Role (may still be able to get him to join via Method B). B) Have Griffin teach various weapon arts in Ria (Coruna), Normi (Westdorf), Northeast Boundary (Finemundi), and Numadica (Chyokun). After three times, you'll have the opportunity to have him join. Leonard and Taria: Two methods: A) In Ria, talk to Griffin in Coruna and then in the Abandoned Village. You'll get an opportunity to have him join. FAILURE CONDITION: None. B) Have Griffin teach various weapon arts in Ria (Coruna), Normi (Westdorf), Northeast Boundary (Finemundi), and Numadica (Chyokun). After three times, you'll have the opportunity to have him join. FAILURE CONDITION: None. Balmaint: Have Griffin teach various weapon arts in Ria (Coruna), Normi (Westdorf), Northeast Boundary (Finemundi), and Numadica (Chyokun). After three times, you'll have the opportunity to have him join. FAILURE CONDITION: None. 17) Hagar "Kaikow Girl?" "I'm not a Kaikow, but I don't know what I am. Take me away from here." Formation Acquired: Swiftshot Unique Role: The Ill-Fate (Sleep recovery up (M)/Sleep resistance up (M)) Location: Megdasse (Kaikow Settlement) Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: 2 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Very difficult to use because of only having 1 LP. She has great stats except for Endurance, so she's good at anything except tanking/ protecting. However you use her, keep her protected! The good news is that she recovers from being LP-killed in 2 battles! (only Muiredach has her beat--he recovers in 1 battle for some reason) How to Acquire: Urpina: Two methods: A) Via Common Quest Sigfrei alone (Chapter doesn't matter): Activate the Walomir glyph first and then the Kaikow glyph. Activate the remaining glyphs, go back to the Kaikow Settlement, and Converse to have her join. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: You may not want to pursue this method if you want to con- * * spire with Adill or recruit Sasha in Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards, as * * this will render the Shard in Megdasse inaccessible. * *********************************************************************** B) Via Common Quests Sigfrei and Scarlet Shards (Chapter order doesn't matter unless you want to conspire with Adill or recruit Sasha, in which Chapter 2 will need to be Sigfrei and Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards. See their relevant entries for more information): Activate the Kaikow glyph via Sigfrei and the Walomir glyph via Scarlet Shards. Activate the remaining glyphs, go back to the Kaikow Settlement, and Converse to have her join. FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR EACH METHOD: A) 1) If Chapter 3, activate the Kaikow glyph without activating the Walomir glyph first. 2) If Chapter 2, activate the Kaikow glyph without activating the Walomir glyph first, finish the Chapter, and then pick Phoenix for the Chapter 3 Common Quest. 3) Decline choice to have Hagar join. B) 1) Forget to activate the appropriate glyphs during the appropriate Common Quests/Chapters. 2) Decline choice to have Hagar join. Leonard: Complete the Kaikow glyph by going in the Kaikow lookout tower to get the Earth Serpent to pop up out of the hole and then defeat the Serpent. Complete the remaining glyphs and go back to Kaikow and Converse to have Hagar join. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline choice to have Hagar join. Taria: Any 2 of Common Quests Sigfrei, Scarlet Shards, and Earth Serpent in any order: Complete the Kaikow glyph via Sigfrei or Earth Serpent and the Walomir glyph via Sigfrei or Scarlet Shards. Whichever combination you use, once they're all lit up, go back to Kaikow to recruit Hagar. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Select Chapter 2 Sigfrei, activate the Walomir glyph, don't activate the Kaikow glyph, finish the Chapter, and then pick Scarlet Shards for Chapter 3. 2) Select Chapter 2 Sigfrei, activate the Kaikow glyph, finish the Chapter, and then pick Earth Serpent for Chapter 3. 3) Forget to activate the appropriate glyphs during the appropriate Common Quests/Chapters. 4) Decline choice to have Hagar join. Balmaint: 1st Intermission Earth Serpent from Megdasse, 2nd Intermission Scarlet Shards: Complete the Kaikow glyph via Earth Serpent (you'll be forced to if you start Earth Serpent from Megdasse) and the Walomir glyph via Scarlet Shards. This is the only combination that works in a Balmaint Playthrough. Once all glyphs are complete, go to Kaikow to have Hagar join. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Select Scarlet Shards during the 1st Intermission (Megdasse is not accessible until it is entered from Kei during the Main Quest, which starts an Earth Serpent Intermission, and is only freely accessible after Earth Serpent is completed). 2) Start 1st Intermission Earth Serpent from any location other than Megdasse. 3) Forget to activate the Walomir glyph during 2nd Intermission Scarlet Shards. 4) Decline choice to have Hagar join. 18) Hilda Stepmother "Be the need cooking, cleaning, or counsel, I will gladly take care of our party for you." Formation Acquired: Sweeping Strikes Unique Role: Disciple (Increases frequency of Marigan's Mania) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: 7 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Since you have to pick her anyway over Antonius and Maximus for the character trophy, you could teach her the five Techniques required for the Champion Duelist role, but this takes a lot of time and effort. Aside from Intelligence, her stats aren't that great, and by time you get Hilda, you should have some decent mages already (Elysed, Mirane, even Solon is serviceable). So I'd say either go the Champion Duelist route, make her a Mage, or keep her on the bench. How to Acquire: Urpina: Chapter 1, continue down the Antonius Rescue Route in Old Wise and the Sugar Castle Lighthouse (Chapter 1 ends in Cindrea if you made the right choice(s)): At the beginning of Chapter 3, when asked to choose between Hilda, Maximus, and Antonius, choose Hilda. FAILURE CONDITION: 1) End the Antonius Rescue Route in Sugar Castle Lighthouse in Chapter 1 (Chapter 1 ended in Thracini). 2) Chose Maximus or Antonius at the beginning of Chapter 3. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 19) Hongswan Ashina Tribesman "Selhaan is my Nyu name, but as I'm of the Ashina tribe, I'll use that name instead." Formation Acquired: Black Sheep Unique Role: The Vigilant (Chance to be blocked/evaded down (M)/Speed down (M)) Location: Numadica (Ashina) Specialty: Bows LP=0 Recovery: 5 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Keep this boi on Bows! One of the best in the game. Only real issue is his 3 LP. How to Acquire: Urpina and Taria: Scarlet Shards Common Quest (Chapter doesn't matter): Use heirloom (Ibex Ring or Hairpin) to reveal that a Shard is in Ashina. Hongswan seems traumatically affected by the past and claims to not know anything about the Shard. From here, complete the Urbs Aurea Excavation Quest. Once the water turns red and the slime starts to approach, warn the people digging for gold and if you have time, fight the slime. Once it reaches the bones, it becomes a Catastrophe. From there you can go back to Ashina to have Hongswan join you and hand over the Shard. Alternatively, if you fight and lose to the Catastrophe (or if you leave it alone, leave Numadica, and come back), the sandstorm will wipe out Ashina. Now you'll have to leave Numadica and come back, visit Ashina again, rinse, and repeat until Hongswan is done using the Shard's power to rebuild the town, in which then he'll hand over the shard and offer to join. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Lose the fight against the Catastrophe, go back to Ashina, and take the Scarlet Shard from Hongswan by force. 2) Decline option to have Hongswan join. Leonard: Use Scarlet Shard from Belongings Menu to reveal that another Shard is in Ashina. Hongswan seems traumatically affected by the past and claims to not know anything about the Shard. From here, complete the Urbs Aurea Excavation Quest. In this case, Leonard has the option to close the lid on the Urbs Aurea box, and if successful (win the resulting fight), can go to Ashina, get the Shard, and recruit Hongswan. If the fight is lost, then the slime will turn the water red, creep up to the bony area, and become a Catastrophe as usual. Balmaint: Scarlet Shards Common Quest (Intermission doesn't matter): Use the Pendant to reveal that a Shard is in Ashina. Since the Urbs Aurea Excavation is already done and the Catastrophe already wiped out Ashina (this is unavoidable in a Balmaint Playthrough), you'll need to leave Numadica and come back and check on Ashina repeatedly until Hongswan re- builds Ashina with the Shard's power. From there, he'll hand over the Shard and offer to join. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) After leaving and re-entering Numadica, tell Sasha that you are giving up on gathering the Scarlet Shards. 2) Go to Ashina and choose to take the Shard from Hongswan by force. 3) Decline option to have Hongswan join. 20) Ignatius Boatswain "You know that I'm not just any old boathouse owner, right? If so, no questions." Formation Acquired: Browbeat Unique Role: Master (Increases frequency of Tejedura's Embrace) Location: Rhonicum (Boat Dock north of Nekwa, southwest-ish of Silmium) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: 8 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Role: Strength is decent, but Dex is LOW. He needs to stay the hell away from inflicting any statuses. Great Swords might be OK. He could stick with Clubs, but good luck inflicting that Paralysis status with Seismic Strike... How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Balmaint: Complete the Doppelganger Side Quest. Go back to the boathouse and Converse (may have to do this twice). FAILURE CONDITION: Decline to have Ignatius join. Taria: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Tomato). 21) Irene Head of House Erakleos "Get your act together or I shall see you whipped. And do not neglect my daily care!" Formation Acquired: Erakleos Guard Unique Role: Immovable Object (Shield block rate up (M)/Defense up (S)) Location: Cindrea (Hadasht) Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Role: See that Formation? See that Role? See that ENDURANCE! This woman is an ABSOLUTE UNIT! Let her tank! How to Acquire: Urpina and Balmaint: Chapter 3 Phoenix or 2nd Intermission Phoenix started during Part 6A: 1) While in Cindrea, use the Phoenix Feather in the Belongings Menu. 2) Speak to Irene in Hadasht. 3) Next, speak to the troops guarding the dam. 4) Go to Saqqara and Converse. (may also want to speak to the fisherman and complete that event so you can recruit Raphael while you're at it) 5) Now go into the dam itself and finish the battles. 6) Once the dam is destroyed, go to Hadasht and talk to Irene. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start the Phoenix Common Quest during the wrong Chapter/Intermission or start Intermission 2 Phoenix too soon. 2) Go through the above steps out of order. The dam will remain intact. 3) Destroy the dam via Earth Serpent instead of Phoenix if you are Balmaint. Leonard and Taria: Can't recruit. 22) Julia Noble Admirer "There's no need to be so apprehensive about me; I was told to stay by your side, and I shall." Formation Acquired: All For One Unique Role: Tracker (Initial Position up (M)) Location: Kei (Nangoon) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Role: Might as well keep her as a Mage. Her stats aren't that great, though (Acuity being the highest at 13). Hate to have her be a bench warmer with the effort it takes to get her (requiring BOTH Earth Serpent AND Phoenix!). For Balmaint, she joins so late (Part 7, and only if Arthur is still in the Party) that it's not really worth investing in her. How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: 1) Complete the Wishing Tree part of the Phoenix Quest (letter on arrow instructs going to the Blacksmith's hut, getting jumped by the Nangoon gang, rescue Marion if you're not Balmaint). Taria will have to do this during Chapter 1, while Urpina and Balmaint will have to do it during the appropriate Chapter/Intermission. Leonard can do this at any time. 2) For anyone other than Urpina, complete the Wishing Tree part of the Earth Serpent quest (Savnok minion in well). To do so, you have to fight a certain number of Earth Golems and then go to the Wishing Tree and read the letter telling you to go to the well. 3) Complete the rest of the Wishing Tree Side Quest (Balmaint can only do this during Part 7 (Azhuacan Endgame) and only if Arthur is still in the Party). If done correctly, the tree should break. 4) Go to Nangoon and Converse with the noble. 5) Go back to Nangoon and Converse again to recruit Julia. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Forget to do the Common Quest-specific Wishing Tree steps during the appropriate Main or Common Quest (except for Urpina Earth Serpent--this requirement is waived for her, as she has no access to Kei during Chapter 1). 2) If Balmaint, have Arthur leave your Party (which occurs if Arthur is not in the Retinue during the Part 7 or 2nd Intermission boss fight, which- ever one comes last). Although the tree breaks under this condition, the Converse option for recruiting Julia in Nangoon doesn't appear. 3) Decline choice to have Julia join. 23) Keegan Council Chairman "Do you think 'chairman' to be just another fancy title? Why, I'm the most important person in Zegna!" Formation Acquired: Katarina Wedge Unique Role: Merchant (Increases frequency of Bartlett's Stratagem) Location: Cerenaif (Zegna) Specialty: Short Sword LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Might as well keep him on Short Swords. Not great, but not horrible either. Should be better for being available in only one Story and having such complicated steps to recruit. How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. Leonard: Muiredach must NOT be recruited (Palette Swap Rule), must NOT be in Part 3 (after the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary), and the following Side Quests must NOT be in progress or completed: - Leo/Lissa possessed by the "Make a Vow/Thou Shall Not _____" spirit - Zegna vs Parm troop events :deep breath: 1) Use a Scarlet Shard from the Belongings Menu to show the shooting star falling at the hot springs cave (Northwest of Cingular). 2) Enter the hot springs cave and win the double encounter there. 3) Choose to keep looking for the Shard. Giant Sea Mushrooms appear nearly Cingular. 4) Converse in Cingular, burn down the Shrooms, and fight another double encounter. 5) Go back to Cingular, Converse and Leo will ask if the lady knows about a Scarlet Shard (if he asks about Ei Hanum, leave and re-enter Cingular and Converse again). You'll be told to go to Castello Guscio. Yes, that would be another double encounter... 6) From here, choose to keep looking, but DO NOT GO TO the Water Mill! Instead go to Nipelo and cut down some more Shrooms. No, not THOSE kind of Shrooms, so get your tongue off the screen and fight the next double encounter. 7) Go back to Nipelo to find out that someone found the Shard and gave it to a priest in Imhokiel Temple (again, if Leo asks about Ei Hanum first, leave and come back and he'll ask about the Scarlet Shard). 8) Go to Imhokiel Temple and...shake your head. Or Facepalm. Or Both. 9) Now go to Zegna to get arrested. You should now have an option to help Keegan out and a doub--I mean single encounter. 10) Go back to Zegna and ask about Ei Hanum, leave, then go back in and ask about the Scarlet Shard. This will point you to the Labyrinth. 11) FINALLY, go back to Zegna again and you should have the Converse option to recruit him! Wow. FAILURE CONDITIONS: Do any of the following beforehand: 1) Recruit Muiredach 2) Acquire the Scarlet Shard in Cerenaif 3) Reach the Silver Lake in the Northeast Boundary (starting Part 3) 4) Get possessed by the Thou Shall Not Spirit ...or do any of the following DURING the process: 1) Start the Water Mill quest 2) Start the Zegna vs Parm troop quest 3) Decide not to help Keegan 24) Kenji Ostdorf Man "You've taken me in! Heh heh. By my belly, I won't let you down!" Formation Acquired: All For One Unique Role: Normi Warrior (Paralysis recovery up (L)/Defense up (S)) Location: Normi (Ostdorf) Specialty: Short Sword LP=0 Recovery: 4 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: That DEX is high, so Short Swords is good for him. Too bad his MOB is terrible. At least you can spam Eulogy with impunity. :) He does start with Golden Note, though! How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Complete the Unda Elemental Weapon Side Quest (Fight lotsa monsters in the center of Normi, make lotsa ice floes appear, get lotsa honey, give to lotsa bears, see lotsa dead people, fight lotsa ghost ships, fight the battles in each of the Warriors Three's caves, tickle snowmen, make weapon appear). After completion, go to eastern village of Ostdorf, Converse, and have him join. FAILURE CONDITION: Refuse Kenji's request to join. Leonard: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Casper). 25) Kreisa Young Woman "Who I really am doesn't matter now that I've joined you. I'm finally free." Formation Acquired: Mystical Might Unique Role: Sorceress (Sudden death resistance up (M)/Focus up (S)) Location: Termina (Raven Manor) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: 6 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Very good Mage that can be acquired by anyone (at the cost of Chichi and Erreich, though), and should be kept as a Mage. How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Urpina and Taria must be at at least Chapter 2. Balmaint must finish Part 2 (Termina). Leonard can start at anytime (but I recommend holding off until you recruit Taria to avoid one of the Failure Conditions in her entry). Also Chichi must not be in your party (Palette Swap Rule): 1) In the southeast part of Termina, you'll see a woman being attacked by birds. Help her. 2) Go south to the Raven Manor at her request and go through the event. 3) Talk to the fisherman around the east part of the southern tip of the lake (Erreich). 4) Go north of Erreich to the Liuhuang Vent. Win fight and get chipped Duskstone. 5) Go to one of the two urns either east or west of Raven Manor and drop the chipped Duskstone in the urn to break. Monsters will appear around the Manor. 6) Go back to the Manor and talk to Kreisa again. 7) Repeat Step 5, this time breaking the remaining urn. 8) Finally, go back to the ruined Raven Manor. Choose to trust Kreisa for BOTH dialog choices. She will now join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) On the final step, call out Kreisa for being a witch/fiend/whatever. 2) On the final step, say you trust Kreisa on the first dialog choice, but not on the second choice. 3) Have Chichi in your party. In this case, all dialog choices lead to the same result (a fight), as the game won't let you violate that dreaded Palette Swap Rule. 26) Kumi Caprese Woman "Ain't none more piratey than I! Betray me, and ye'll be keelhauled!" Formation Acquired: Overpowering Might Unique Role: First Striker (Physical-attack damage up (S)/Initial Position up (S)) Location: Bicyniro (Caprese) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: 5 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Arrr ye matey keep de big choppa or she keel haul you! How to Acquire: Urpina: Requires the Phoenix Common Quest (Chapter doesn't matter): Go to the Southeast Boundary and inspect the corner across from the island where the real Phoenix nest is. Now go back to Bicyniro, enter Caprese, and Converse. Kumi will join immediately. FAILURE CONDITION: None Leonard: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Cecilia). Taria: During the course of Chapter 1, you'll be forced to go to the Southeast Boundary and inspect the corner across from the island where the real Phoenix nest is. Now go back to Bicyniro, enter Caprese, and Converse. Kumi will join immediately. As this is required to advance the main plot, this is considered a forced recruit. Balmaint: Requires 2nd Intermission Phoenix (1st Intermission Phoenix has no access to Bicyniro or the Southeast Boundary), access to Bicyniro unlocked via Part 5 (Rhonicum), AND Macha not defeated at the True Macha Shrine in Yaxart: Go to the Southeast Boundary and inspect the corner across from the island where the real Phoenix nest is. Now go back to Bicyniro, enter Caprese, and Converse. As long as Macha hasn't been fought in Yaxart, Kumi will join immediately. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Attempt this during the 1st Intermission instead of the 2nd...you won't get very far! 2) Defeat Macha at the True Macha Shrine in Yaxart before performing the above steps. 3) Complete Part 5 (Rhonicum) in Cerenaif without unlocking Bicyniro. 27) Lady Lady from Lug "I hate scary stuff, so I'll hide if things get dicey. Just lettin' you know." Formation Acquired: Lumberjack Unique Role: Realist (Confusion recovery up (M)/Confusion resistance up (M)) Location: Rhonicum (Lug) Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Let's face it: her stats suck except for END and INT at 12. You could try using her as a Protector/Tank or a Mage. Since there are plenty of better characters in this game, Bench Warmer might be her best use... How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Taria: Complete the Doppelganger Side Quest. Go back to Lug and Converse. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline to have Lady join. Balmaint: Cannot recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Clover). 28) Lamar Zegna Guard "I believe fighting at your side will guarantee Zegna's safety." Formation Acquired: Desert Lance Unique Role: The Courageous (Strength up (M)/Acuity up (M)) Location: Cerenaif (Zegna) Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Might as well keep him with Spears. You'll likely have better choices for this purpose, though (Tissisaaq, Kahn, Mondo, Chiago). At least recruit him for the Formation if you don't want Socrates. How to Acquire: Urpina: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Zigor). Leonard: Two methods: A) Complete the process for recruiting Keegan. Leave and re-enter Zegna. You should have another "Converse" option for recruiting Lamar. B) Complete the Parm vs Zegna Soldiers Side Quest. Enter Zegna, Converse, and recruit. Taria: Complete the Parm vs Zegna Soldiers Side Quest. Enter Zegna, Converse, and recruit. Balmaint: Three methods: A) During Part 5 (Rhonicum), complete the giant mushroom events. When you can (earliest time is Part 6), go back to Zegna and Converse. Lamar will finally calm the hell down and be indebted to you. B) Complete Part 5 (Rhonicum) through a method other than the giant shrooms (e.g.: break vow until Balmaint's LP=1 and win battle). Go back to Cerenaif and complete the Parm vs Zegna Soldiers side quest. Enter Zegna, converse, and recruit. C) If you completed Part 5 (Rhonicum) via Bicyniro, and you can't get to Cerenaif, you can gain access through: - 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent, Urpina Kidnapping Route - Part 7: Endgame, as long as Arthur is still in your party However you gain access, complete the Parm vs Zegna Soldiers Side Quest, and then converse in Zegna to have Lamar join. FAILURE CONDITION FOR ALL METHODS: Decline request for Lamar to join. 29) Lewis Darling Lighthouse Keeper "I am the last of the Ilfee lighthouse keepers. Alas, I fear our end was inevitable." Formation Acquired: Contingency Plan Unique Role: The Hearty (Poison/confusion/sudden death resistance up (M)) Location: Mare Ilfee (New Wise) Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Despite his claims of just being a lighthouse keeper and nothing more, let Daddy Lighthouse punch things. When Lewis Darling enters the Mare Ilfee, he doesn't get wet. The water gets Lewis Darling. Too bad his base DEX and ACU aren't a little higher (give him some equipment to make up for it so you can Tumble and Stun things for days). How to Acquire: Urpina: During Chapter 1 when you pursue Savnok's cronies to the Mare Ilfee, ask your Daddy...I mean Lewis to guide you. FAILURE CONDITION: Do not acknowledge Lewis as Your Daddy by not having him guide you. Leonard: Before Part 3, enter the Mare Ilfee from Cerenaif (Zegna). In New Wise, choose to wait for a bit. Now when Lewis tells you to get coal, you do two things: 1) Get Coal 2) Like it. After doing so, sail to the Middle Road Lighthouse and clean up the big pile of bird poo the Phoenix left behind. Finally, complete the plague-related events. Then and only then will he grace his magnificent presence in your piddly little party. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline the greatness that is Lewis M. F. Darling by telling him "What are we, your servants?" Yes, Leonard. You are his servants. Taria: During Chapter 1 when you finally reach New Wise, you'll be asked to get coal. I think you know what to do by now. Get Coal, Like It, and clean up flaming bird poo from Middle Road Lighthouse. Go back to New Wise and get this "ordinary lighthouse keeper" to join your team. "Ordinary" indeed. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline to have your party join Lewis Darling. He doesn't join parties. Parties join him. Balmaint: During 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent (Part 6A), Urpina Kidnapping Route: when you pursue Savnok's cronies to the Mare Ilfee, have Mr. Lighthouse guide you. I'm pretty sure you have to acknowledge him as such. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Do not go down the Urpina Kidnapping Route during 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent (see Antonius' entry for details--failing Antonius means failing Lewis as well, and of course failing Lewis means failing life). 2) Start some other Common Quest during the 2nd Intermission or start the Earth Serpent Common Quest sooner than Part 6A. Again, if you want Magnificence to acknowledge you, you must play by the rules. 3) Refuse to have said Magnificence join and thus fail at all things. 30) Lord Stabiae ???? " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Thracini (Stabiae) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Given how late it is when he's available (Second Common Quest, so the last 1/3 of the Playthrough), either keep him as a mage or have him be another bench warmer. How to Acquire: Urpina and Leonard: Can't recruit. Taria and Balmaint: Chapter 3 or 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent: In Thracini, defeat the Earth Golems around Elhuacan. Next, go to Elhuacan and witness the events there. After doing so, go to Stabiae and converse. *************************************************************************** * NOTE: If you go down the Urpina Rescue Route and allow the Saw to be * * destroyed, the events in Thracini/Elhuacan won't occur until the Saw is * * rebuilt and you leave/re-enter Thracini. * *************************************************************************** FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Decline Lord Stabiae's request to join 2) Defeat the Earth Serpent with the Saw in your possession without witnessing the Earth Golem attack on Elhuacan. 3) (Unconfirmed) Erupt the volcano while the Earth Golems are attacking Elhuacan? 31) Luna Imperial Librarian "I'm a second-level clerk. ...Which is fine. First would be way too much." Formation Acquired: Overpowering Might Unique Role: Second-Level Clerk (All ally resistances up (S)/Attack Damage down (M)) Location: Northeast Boundary (survey hut near the large glaciers) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Anything that can take advantage of DAT STRENGTH! Wow! Too bad she only has 3 LP... How to Acquire: Urpina: Can't recruit. You'll find out why if you go through the steps below with her... Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Requires Scarlet Shard Common Quest for Taria and Balmaint: 1) Use Scarlet Shard, Hairpin, or Pendant from Belongings Menu. The shooting star will land at the wreckage in the far north, and the path to get there is blocked by three large glaciers. 2) Go to the survey hut and speak to Luna. She has a plan for breaking down the glaciers... 3) Leave the survey hut and go to another location on the Northeast Boundary map (like one of the two towns) 4) Go back to the survey hut and witness what looks like a crime scene. 5) Go to the glaciers. They'll all break. 6) Fight the giant monster. 7) Accept Luna's request to join. FAILURE CONDITION: 1) Don't use Scarlet Shard/Hairpin/Pendant before completing the above steps. 2) Complete the following steps outside of the Scarlet Shards Common Quest. 3) Decline Luna's request to join. 32) Maximus Lord of the House of Swords "Despite what difficulties may come, House Julanius must revive the Empire." Formation Acquired: Trickster Unique Role: Wizened Duelist (Enables dual wield/Weapon block rate up (M)) Location: Rhonicum (Silmium) for Urpina, Taria Chapter 3, and Balmaint Part 6A 2nd Intermission, Azhuacan for Taria Chapter 2 and Balmaint 1st Intermission Specialty: Long Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: No (can leave Taria and Balmaint's Parties) Recommended Use: Julanius means Duelanius. How to Acquire: Urpina: Chapter 1, continue down the Antonius Rescue Route in Old Wise and the Sugar Castle Lighthouse (Chapter 1 ends in Cindrea if you made the right choices): At the beginning of Chapter 3, when asked to choose between Hilda, Maximus, and Antonius, choose Maximus. (not recommended if you want to acquire all characters in the fewest number of playthroughs--Hilda is exclusive to Urpina while Maximus is not) FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) End the Antonius Rescue Route in Sugar Castle Lighthouse in Chapter 1 (Chapter 1 ended in Thracini). 2) Choose Hilda or Antonius at the beginning of Chapter 3. Leonard: Can't recruit. Taria: Two methods: A) Chapter 2 Earth Serpent: after defeating the Serpent once, go to Azhuacan and ask for the Saw. You'll get it under the condition that Maximus joins you. B) Chapter 3 Earth Serpent started in a region other than Rhonicum: Fight the Serpent once, then go to Azhuacan and talk to the Holy Republic Soldiers. This time you'll have a choice to either steal the Saw yourself or rely on House Julanius--choose the latter. Now go to Silmium in Rhonicum and speak to Urpina and Mondo, who will get Maximus to join your party. PUT MAXIMUS IN YOUR RETINUE!!!! Now go back to Azhuacan and fight the double-encounter. If done correctly, Maximus will stay in your party after the encounters. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start Chapter 3 in Rhonicum. No option occurs to recruit Maximus at all, but you can recruit Antonius and go down the Urpina Kidnapping Route this way. 2) Choose to steal the Emperor's Saw instead in Chapter 3. 3) In Chapter 3 go to Rhonicum to get Maximus, go back to Azhuacan, and fight in Marigan Temple WITHOUT Maximus in your Retinue. He will leave your party and the double-encounter becomes a TRIPLE-encounter... Balmaint: Three methods: A) 1st Intermission Earth Serpent: after defeating the Serpent once, go to Azhuacan and ask for the Saw. You'll get it under the condition that Maximus joins you. B) 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started in Megdasse during Part 6 or 6A: after defeating the Serpent once, go to Azhuacan and choose to rely on the Julanius family. Maximus will join you, however, you must choose NOT to have him dedicate himself to the Holy Empire. Otherwise he will leave (and if this occurs during Part 6A, then this will start the Urpina Kidnapping Route, and you can recruit Antonius along the way). C) 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started in a region other than Megdasse during at least Part 6: Defeat the Serpent once, then go to Azhuacan and choose to rely on the Julanius family. You'll get the Saw under the condition that Maximus joins you. FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR EACH METHOD: B) Choose to have Maximus dedicate himself to the Holy Empire (he'll leave your party). B) and C) 1) Choose to steal the Emperor's Saw instead 2) Start 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent sooner than Part 6. Arthur will say that the Julanius family will come up with some excuse not to help. 33) Mirane Nun of Astel "Astel is a wonderful Celestial who grants me a full belly every day." Formation Acquired: All For One Unique Role: Ascetic (Increases frequency of Astel's Mercy) Location: Jusitania (Astel Temple) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: 6 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: She's an easy enough Mage to acquire. Although it's frustrating to train a Mage that only has Earth Heal and Rain of Life, do it, and she'll be a reliable choice for New Game Pluses to come. She also likes candy, especially cotton candy when she glimmers techniques. How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Simply go to the Astel Temple in Jusitania and accept the trial for Astel's love (aka: a boss fight). Once finished, go back into the temple and you'll get an option to have her join. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline request to have her join. Leonard: Acquire the Scarlet Shard in Jusitania, and then go to the Astel temple. If you haven't asked about Ei Hanum already, that will happen first. Exit and re-enter the temple to take the trial for Astel's love (boss fight). Win the fight and enter the temple one more time and you'll get an option to have her join. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline request to have her join. 34) Muiredach Mayor of Nekwa "Mayor is an important job! I'm charged to know every little thing about my town." Formation Acquired: Browbeat Unique Role: Location: Rhonicum or Bicyniro (Nekwa) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: 1 Battle!!!! Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Protector/Tank. His only good stat is Endurance, and he recovers from getting LP-killed in one battle! Why not put this wacky ass mayor to work? What does he think he is, a vampire? How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Complete the Doppelganger quest. Go to Nekwa and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Decline when asked to have Muiredach join your party. 2) Have Leonard-exclusive character Keegan in your party (violates Palette Swap Rule). 35) Nasir Belike Man " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Good For Nothing ( ) Location: Numadica (Belike) Specialty: Great Swords LP=0 Recovery: 11 Battles!! Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: That Acuity is pretty good, but that Dexterity is not. Could take advantage of that with certain techniques that can Stun or Paralyze, so Spears or Martial Arts may be a better fit. Overall a much faster Jamto. How to Acquire: Urpina: Sigfrei or Scarlet Shards Common Quest (Chapter doesn't matter): Simply go to Belike and Converse. Accept his request to hire him. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Trigger the Catastrophe during the Urbs Aurea Excavation Side Quest before conversing with Nasir (this destroys the Belike town) 2) Refuse to hire Nasir. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 36) Nemain Aspiring Sorceress "Now that you've joined me, you better be sure to win all the time!" Formation Acquired: Puissance Unique Role: Magician (Increases frequency of Macha's Brilliance) Location: Hibernia (southwest hut with yak...s...) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: If this were the original SaGa Scarlet Grace (no "Ambitions" in the title), I'd say stay FAR away from being a Mage since her INT wasn't so hot. Since she has a more serviceable 12 INT, go ahead and feed her hubris. :D Should you choose not to, put that 15 ACU to work by having her Stun/Paralyze things somehow. Also if you recruit her late, she will have A LOT of catching up to do in Magic levels. Speaking of 15 ACU...that makes her another "statistically ironic" character. :/ How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Complete her rather long Side Quest, which usually starts in Chapter 2 for the ladies, after Part 4 (Hibernia) for Balmaint, and after completing the Earth Serpent and Scarlet Shard events in Hibernia for Leonard: 1) Start the wackiness by going into the southwest hut in Hibernia. 2) Defeat the monster that Nemain haphazardly summons. 3) Go back into the hut. For some reason, they want to train at a waterfall. 4) Now go to the waterfall east of Ceobhran. Watch attempted siblicide. 5) Now go further east to a spot somewhat west of Teach Na Macha and watch for bubbles. After thwarting what otherwise would be semi-involuntary manslaughter by drowning, you'll get a choice about Nemain's next spell. "Abracadabra?" = fight with another monster while the other choice is otherwise uneventful. 6) Return to that Wacky Yak Hut and witness Nemain wanting to do a job search. Maybe she should stick to LinkedIn? 7) Now go to ALL THREE outer houses (Ceobhran, Fomoire, and Makulilkali) and Converse. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: You may have issues with going to Fomoire if you're Balmaint * * and you don't have access to Jusitania yet. Best way around this is * * to either unlock Jusitania via Intermission/Common Quest (1st Inter-* * mission Scarlet Shards during Part 4A or 2nd Intermission Phoenix), * * and then head north to Hibernia to resolve the flag conflict * * (you'll have to finish the Intermission in question before you can * * continue with these steps) or you can wait until Part 7: Endgame, * * access Jusitania via Bicyniro, and then go north to Hibernia to fix * * the flag-spaghetti. * *********************************************************************** 8) Talk to the guards near the Grove of Silence (or the spot where it used to be depending on past events) and examine the rock around that area to find a third guard. :) 9) Now go southeast to find another rock east of Fomoire. Destroy the rock, enter the cave, and win the battle there. 10) Go back to Dat Wacky Yak Hut to find out what happened ^_^ 11) Now go to the Grove of Silence (if it's gone, leave and re-enter Hibernia instead). 12) Go back to the hut again, and this time there's maybe-illegal animal cloning going on here, and you're going to help her profit from it!
Accept her request to go to Ceobhran with the cloned yak fur (unless you're Balmaint--he and Arthur won't accept because of the legal issues, but you still need to go to Ceobhran for the next step). 13) Go to Ceobhran and the mage will talk about the yak fur. Afterwards, go back to the hut **again** for another event. Leave animal cloning to the professionals, folks. 14) **VERY CRITICAL STEP--MESSING UP HERE WILL TRIGGER A FAILURE CONDITION!!!** Go to Fomoire Castle and then Ceobhran afterward! If you return to the hut before going to these locations, Nemain and her sister will return to Yaxart instead of giving you the option to have her join! 15) Again, make sure you went to Fomoire and Ceobhran. Did you go to Fomoire and Ceobhran? Yes? Good. Back to the yak hut now and Nemain will summon a poisonous mushroom...yeah...that again. That might explain Nemain's behavior. Tongue off the screen please. 16) After seeing something that would piss off Smokey the Bear if he were in this game, defeat the monster. 17) Back to the hut again. You'll find that Nemain was taken away by Ceobhran. Reckless endangerment, illegal cloning, and arson...gee, I wonder why?!!! 18) Now go to Ceobhran and Converse. Not that they'll tell you anything you don't already know, but do it anyway. 19) FINALLY! Go back to the hut. Nemain thinks she'll be hired by one of the houses. Ask her to join you instead. Please. For the children. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) On Step 14 above, go back to the hut too soon. This will cause Nemain and her sister to go back to Yaxart on Step 19. 2) Do not choose the option to have her join you instead on Step 19. May the Celestials have mercy on us all. 37) Nolan Shepherd "I may be a shepherd, but I lead much more than sheep now." Formation Acquired: Black Sheep Unique Role: Shepherd (Increases frequency of Tukuz's Swiftness) Location: Megdasse (tiny sheep next to the Walomir Settlement) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Tough one here. Out of all characters with a Specialty of Staff (Incantations), Nolan has the lowest Intelligence at 10. With a Strength of 11, he is a serviceable fighter, but that Dexterity is horrible so he needs to stay away from Axes, Bows, Short Swords, and maybe Spears. With so many better mages, he just might be a bench warmer despite all the trouble it takes to recruit him. He is one of two characters that can give you the Black Sheep formation (Aslana is the other, and she is just as much of a pain to recruit). How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Socrates must not be in the party (Palette Swap Rule): Follow the steps for recruiting Hagar (see her entry for details). The apples on the tree should now turn red. Go ahead and pick the apples and feed them to the tiny sheep outside of the Walomir Settlement. They'll grow up so fast that one would wonder if PED testing will be in the near future. In any case, Nolan will offer to join. FAILURE CONDITIONS: All the same Failure Conditions for Hagar apply to Nolan. In addition: Pick the apples from the tree near the eastern glyph when they are black. Epic Failure occurs when you feed them to the sheep (they become monsters). 38) Ogniana Princess of Grumon "I gots no interest in bein' queen--I just wanna walk around and look at stuff!" Formation Acquired: Momentum Unique Role: Oppressor (Physical-attack damage up (L)/Chance to be blocked/evaded up (M)) Location: Jusitania (varies depending on Protagonist and method) Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: 2 Battles! Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Her DEX, MOB, and ACU lend well to a variety of uses. Keeping her with an Axe is not a bad idea, as that DEX helps offset the built-in accuracy issues. How to Acquire: Urpina: In Chapter 1 when you go to Grumon in Jusitania, you'll be forced to include her in your party (you'll actually have a choice, but refusal leads to her joining anyway--try it if you want. :D ) Leonard: Two methods: A) Walk toward the Jusitania southern coast a bit west of Misery. The Phoenix will drop its load around there. Inspect that spot and you'll find pirates and bandits duking it out. Side with the bandits and you'll get a choice to have Ogniana join you. If you side with the pirates, you can go back to Grumon and Converse to have Ogniana join you. B) Use a Scarlet Shard from the Belongings menu to see the shooting star fall on Donseille Mine. Choose to lend a hand to Ogniana to have her join. Lend a hand to another faction, and you'll have one more opportunity to have her join by going to Grumon and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) For either method, choose to help a faction other than the bandits, win the resulting battles, go back to Grumon, and choose to fight Ogniana. 2) For either method, choose to help the bandits and decline Ogniana's offer to join. Taria: Two methods: A) During Chapter 1, use the Phoenix Feather in Jusitania. The Phoenix will drop a deuce a little west of Misery. Inspect that spot and you'll find pirates and bandits duking it out. Side with the bandits and you'll get a choice to have Ogniana join you. If you side with the pirates, you can go back to Grumon and Converse to have Ogniana join you. B) During Chapter 2 or 3 Scarlet Shards, Use the Hairpin from the Belong- ings Menu to see the shooting star fall on Donseille Mine. 3) Do not recruit Ogniana using Method A) and choose Earth Serpent and Sigfrei as your Chapter 2 and 3 Common Quests (in any order). Balmaint: Two methods: A) During either Intermission Scarlet Shards (first Intermission must be triggered from Jusitania during Part 4A, second Intermission requires first Intermission Phoenix to be completed and to trigger from Jusitania during Part 5 or later), Use the Hairpin or Pendant from the Belongings Menu to see the shooting star fall on Donseille Mine. Choose to lend a hand to Ogniana to have her join. Lend a hand to another faction, and you'll have one more opportunity to have her join by going to Grumon and Converse. B) During second Intermission Phoenix triggered from Jusitania (Part 5 or later), defeat the weakened Phoenix and then go to Grumon Queendom. Ogniana will question you about the Phoenix. When she asks you to take her with you, as she's tired of being a princess either accept her offer outright, or decline it, fight her, and then accept her offer afterward. FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR EACH METHOD: A) 1) Trigger first Intermission Scarlet Shards in Normi. Jusitania won't be accessible during the Intermission. You can salvage this by triggering second Intermission Phoenix from Jusitania and using Method B). 2) Complete first Intermission Phoenix and trigger second Intermission Scarlet Shards from Normi or Bicyniro. Jusitania won't be accessible during the Intermission. 3) Choose any other combination of Intermissions in which neither of them are Scarlet Shards or if one of them is Scarlet Shards, does not allow access to Jusitania. 4) Choose to help a faction other than the bandits, win the resulting battles, go back to Grumon, and choose to fight Ogniana. 5) Choose to help the bandits and decline Ogniana's offer to join. B) 1) Trigger second Intermission Phoenix from the Mare Ilfee. Jusitania won't be accessible during the Intermission. 2) In the Grumon Queendom, decline her request to join, fight her, and then decline her subsequent request. 39) Orville ??? " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Birdman Location: Southeast Boundary (Birdman Village) Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Mobility = Awesome! Dexterity = Ewww! If you keep him as a Martial Artist, don't expect Stun to proc very often. Might be better off switching to Long Sword (and don't rely on Heaven and Earth for Stun) as his 11 Strength is serviceable. How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Balmaint: 1) Visit the Birdman Village and Orville will fly and then crash land. You will then be in the Village itself (unless you are in the process of recruiting Tsubaki, in which then you'll have to press Confirm at the Village again for a Tsubaki-related event. See her entry for more information). 2) Next, go to where Orville crash-landed and he will mention needing moa feathers. A Wild Moa has appeared! 3) Approach the moa, and it will run away to one of three areas that each have three bushes. 4) Approach each bush, but DO NOT press Confirm yet! A gazelle will appear in one of the bushes. The moa is one bush CLOCKWISE from the gazelle. For example: ***** *(1)* ***** ^ / \ v ^/ \v ***** ***** *(3)* <-<-<-<- *(2)* ***** ***** If the gazelle is in bush #1, the moa will be in bush #2. If the gazelle is in bush #3, then the moa will be in bush #1. If you press Confirm on the gazelle, it will turn to stone and you'll have to battle a cockatrice and its friends. Remember that Orville did say that cockatrice feathers work as well, but as you can tell it takes a bit more work to get those. 5) Repeat Step 4 about 10 times or so (perhaps battling a cockatrice or two along the way) and go back to Birdman Village. Orville will crash-land again. Approach him (you may have to save him from being attacked by fiends) and he'll say something about not giving up on his dream. He'll take your moa and cockatrice feathers, though. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: Before proceeding with the last two steps, make sure you've * * completed the steps necessary for recruiting Tsubaki (again, see * * her entry for details). Once you complete the remaining steps for * * recruiting Orville, Tsubaki will no longer be available. * *********************************************************************** 6) Now go back to the Birdman Village and if you've given him enough feathers, he'll fly a wide lap and land safely in the Village! Weeeee!! 7) Go back to the Village one more time and Converse. You'll now have an option for Orville to join. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline option for Orville to join. Taria: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Snail). 40) Paul Churro Vendor " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Maurehua (Prayer Tower) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Anything but magic. Everything except INT is serviceable (highest stat is ACU 12). How to Acquire: Let's get the easy ones out of the way first: Leonard: Assist in developing the Prayer Tower. Once the Tower is completed, approach it and press the Confirm button. Paul will offer to join. FAILURE CONDITION: Decline Paul's offer to join. Balmaint: Can't recruit. You'll find out why very early in his Story. Now for the tricky ones: Urpina and Taria Sigfrei method: Requires the Sigfrei Common Quest of course (Chapter doesn't matter) AND the Prayer Tower Quest NOT STARTED PRIOR TO THIS!: Complete the Sigfrei-specific Prayer Tower events before finding the man himself (finding him early will end the event prematurely and you will not be able to complete the tower so you may want to make a separate save beforehand). If you choose to protect the tower, examine it and Paul will join. If you choose not to, then after it's destroyed, examine the rubble and ask Paul to join. Urpina-specific methods: A) Requires Chapter 2 Phoenix: Use the Phoenix feather to have our favorite flaming chicken make a nest. Examine the nest and Paul will offer to join. B) Requires Chapter 3 Phoenix and the Prayer Tower quest completed BEFORE Chapter 3: Use the Phoenix Feather to have ol' Crispy drop something on the tower. Examine the Tower and Paul will offer to join. Taria-specific method: Complete the Prayer Tower Side Quest during the Scarlet Shards or Earth Serpent Common Quests (Chapter doesn't matter for either one). Inspect the tower afterwards. FAILURE CONDITIONS FOR ALL URPINA AND TARIA METHODS: 1) Split up the tower development between Chapters and Common Quests. This is a recipe for Flag Spaghetti. 2) Using the Sigfrei method, find Sigfrei before completing the Prayer Tower. The event ends on the spot. 41) Raphael Angler "Can't fish without the dam, so may as well join ya." Formation Acquired: Katarina Wedge Unique Role: Scallywag (Chance to be targeted up (S)/Speed up (S)) Location: Cindrea (fishing north of Saqqara) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: 6 Rounds Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Unfortunately, this is another character that joins late and has mediocre stats (8 LP is pretty good, though). As much as I like him personally, there are so many better characters, so he may be fishing from the bench alongside the likes of Lady, Ignatius, etc. He does start with the Holy Grail spell, but then again so do a lot of other characters... How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Requires the second Elective Common Quest to be either Phoenix or Earth Serpent and started as late as possible: Urpina: Chapter 3 Phoenix Taria: Chapter 3 Earth Serpent Balmaint's 2nd Intermission can be Phoenix or Earth Serpent, but must be started during Part 6A: Talk to the fisherman near the lake north of the Imhokiel Dam. He will mention that there's a monster in the lake. Defeat the "monster" in question. Next, proceed with the events required for the dam to be destroyed: For Earth Serpent, you'll have to talk to the soldiers guarding the dam and Converse in Saqqara. Fight the Earth Golems at least once, and then finally defeat the Earth Serpent. For Phoenix, use the Phoenix Feather, and after the bird drops its load on the dam, go to it and examine. Win the battles inside the dam. After the dam is destroyed, talk to Raphael and you'll be given a choice to have him join. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Go through the above steps too soon (wrong Chapter or Intermission or starting the 2nd Intermission too soon). 2) Defeat the Earth Serpent before talking to the soldiers guarding the dam or the lady in Saqqara. The event ends and the dam is saved! Yay!!!... ...oh wait. 3) Decline to have Raphael join when prompted. 4) Forget to talk to Raphael initially before triggering the dam's destruction. Leonard: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Gabriel). 42) Rico Nangoon Gang Member " " Formation Acquired: Black Belt Unique Role: Location: Kei (Castle Kohan) Specialty: Martial Arts LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: High Strength, OK Dex, might as well keep him on Martial Arts. Acuity is poor, though. How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, and Taria: Ladies require the Phoenix Common Quest: 1) Use the Phoenix Feather to have the bird perch itself on it for a bit. 6) Go to the hut and enter the cellar. You'll find Rico there. 7) When given the choice to battle, choose to do so. You'll fight Rico and some Nangoon gang members. Once finished, you'll rescue Marion (see her entry for details). 8) Now go to Castle Kohan (with Marion in your Retinue if you want to keep her with Leonard) and Converse. You'll get an option to have Rico join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) On Step 7, choose not to fight (the actual verbiage varies by Protagonist). 2) Decline option for Rico to join. Balmaint: Can't recruit (Palette Swap of starting character Robert). 43) Roh Sung Governor of Provincia Termina " " Formation Acquired: All For One Unique Role: Location: Termina or Cindrea (Castle Knym) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Keep him as a mage. He starts with Poison Mist and has INT 13, so why not? How to Acquire: Urpina: Chapter 1, Antonius Rescue Route: He'll offer to join at the end of the Termina events. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Do not go down the Antonius Rescue Route (Chapter 1 ends much sooner than Termina in this case) 2) Decline Roh Sung's offer to join. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 44) Sabit Weapons Enthusiast " " Formation Acquired: Together We Stand Unique Role: Location: Azhuacan (Black Market) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Absolute. Unit. With that Endurance, set this man up with a Club/Shield or Long Sword/Shield, put him in the front of an Erakleos Guard Formation, and watch him tank lots of damage! Also helps that he has 10 LP! How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Go to the Black Market and select the Dark Alley. For every weapon Sabit is interested in, he will talk about it ad nauseum. He will join you after speaking about certain combinations of weapons depending on the main character, which include, but are not limited to: Taria and Balmaint: A) (True) Katana, Twister, Estoc Leonard: Any of the three combinations below: A) (True) Katana, Twister, Battle Bow B) Bladebreaker, Staff of Glory, Maul, Twinspikes C) Samurai Sword, Vermilion Rose (per Synyard's post on GameFAQs) Urpina Any of the two combinations below: A) (True) Katana, Vermilion Rose, Staff of Glory (per Synyard's post) B) Bladebreaker, Twinspikes, Maul, Battle Bow (per Synyard) *************************************************************************** * NOTE: There are numerous other combinations that work for recruiting * * Sabit. As more combinations are found, this FAQ will be updated * * accordingly. * *************************************************************************** How to get these weapons: (True) Katana: Luna starts with one (see her entry for details). You can also get one after the third part of the Imperial Library Survey Hut Side Quest Twister: Complete all of the Mare Ilfee events and visit the Diemazu Shrine. The third reward is this Curved Sword. Estoc: Forge the Fleuret to a Rapier and then that to the Estoc. Battle Bow: Adill starts with one (see his entry for details). You can also get one during the "Thou Shall Not" ghost event in Cerenaif. Bladebreaker: Irene starts with one (see her entry for details). Per Synyard, from the GameFAQs message boards, you can also get one through the secret room in Cerenaif's Haunted Mansion (after battling there, there's a chance that the event will occur), believe the Bigfoot rumor in Caprese (in Bicyniro) and complete the resulting battles, open the closest box to the Imhokiel Dam dog from the third set of boxes, or develop Compost in Megdasse (Nyu Settlement). Staff of Glory: Kreisa starts with one (see her entry for details). You can also get one by forging a basic Staff into a Great Staff and then that into a Staff of Glory. Maul: Many Characters with a Club specialty start with one. You can also get one through the Kei (Castle Kohan) trading post. Twinspikes: In Termina in the south-southeast cave there is a monster that asks for either jellyfish (first and every odd request) or a shark fin (second and every even request). Get the jellyfish or shark fin from the Mare Termina and then return to the cave. Next, REFUSE to give him the item requested and you'll end up in a fight. Receive the Twinspikes after the fight (At 42 Attack power, this is a great weapon to have early in a Playthrough!!) Samurai Sword: Reward from the first part of the Imperial Library Survey Hut Side Quest. Also according to Synyard, a specific type of Merfolk enemy may drop this, but is unsure of the exact type. Vermilion Rose: Reward from winning three battles in the Azhuacan battle arena for the first time (each time after you win Dragon Scales). Carry over the above weapons to every New Game+ and as long as you don't get rid of them in some way (forge, trade, etc.) you'll be able to recruit Sabit every time! FAILURE CONDITION: Somehow get rid of one of the required weapons above without having a means to get another in the same Playthrough before talking to Sabit. 45) Sasha Traveling Woman "I pray my little bit of assistance is enough to defeat the Firebringer." Formation Acquired: Poison Pill Unique Role: Spiritualist (Elemental damage up (XL)/HP down (L)) Location: Azhuacan (Central Temple, literally one dialog choice before the Point of No Return!!) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: 4 Battles Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With that INT score? Obviously stick with magic!!! As for actually using her, you'll need to get out of the final area if you want to spend any reasonable time with her in battle... Situation is somewhere between Yan Fan (Romancing Saga 3) and Josef in Judy's Story (Unlimited Saga) in that you can use Sasha if you want, but the only mandatory event afterwards is the final boss. How to Acquire: Urpina: Requires Chapter 3 Scarlet Shards, NOT conspiring with Adill, AND to have Elysed as one of your Top 15 most used characters for starters. You will need to destroy every single Scarlet Shard. All. Of. Them. (or at least make the game think you did in one possible circumstance). You're probably wondering how to get to the one in Hibernia since Chapter 3 Shards prevents you from getting there initially: once you blow up all the other Shards, Hibernia will be accessible again: the game wants you to save that one for last. So you will need to destroy the Shards in the following locations before having access to Provincia Hibernia: - Marchiam Normi - Northeast Boundary - Provincia Cerenaif - Provincia Gradion - Provincia Jusitania - Marchiam Bicyniro - Marchiam Numadica - Marchiam Megdasse You want to make sure NOT to "bug out" the Shards in Bicyniro and Megdasse, as they can be rendered inaccessible by past actions (running out of rumors in Bicyniro, visiting the Walomir Settlement in Megdasse and lighting up its glyph during Chapter 2 Sigfrei) because if you do, you may be locked out of Hibernia for the rest of the Playthrough. Also in Megdasse, if you complete all of the Glyphs and choose not to conspire with Adill, he will run off with that Shard. According to Axersia from the GameFAQs Message Boards, this actually counts as a "destroyed" Shard, so if Adill ran off with your Precious, don't reset the game! Don't panic! This is NOT a Failure Condition! So my recommendation is to save Megdasse for last (or second-to-last if you count Hibernia). Once you get that one, SAVE YOUR GAME IN A SEPARATE SLOT SINCE THE NEXT STEP IS EASY TO MESS UP! Did you save? No? DO IT! After you made your separate save...WHADDYA MEAN "WHAT SAVE?!!!" (please standby...experiencing technical difficulties...) :lots of screams followed by loud crashes from Frying Pans and Blunt Instruments: (we now return to your regularly scheduled FAQ...) A...ahem. As I was saying...now that you have blown up eight Shards... Hibernia. It's important to get this one right. If you mess up, no Sasha 4 U. 1) Use the Ibex Ring. Shooting Star falls near Teach Na Macha. 2) Fight at Teach Na Macha. Someone ganked the Shard. 3) Go to the Grove of Silence. Lord Gwynese will talk about the Shard, not believing that it's around, and that any old rock could become a Scarlet Shard. Not very helpful right now... 4) Go to Ceobhran. You'll find that the Shard has been divided amongst the three outer houses (Ceobhran, Makulilkali, and Fomoire), and that Ceobhran is not exactly willing to part with their fragment... 5) Now go to Makulilkali. The Commander thinks that Ceobhran and Fomoire are going to misuse their fragments to summon something bad--for Ceobhran a Spiritual--for Fomoire an Infernal. Select "Let me think it over." DO NOT CONSPIRE WITH MAKULILKALI! 6) Now go to Fomoire. Lord Fomoire wants to use his fragment to gain power and take over. Select "Let me think it over."--DO NOT CONSPIRE WITH FOMOIRE! 7) Go back to the Grove of Silence. Lord Gwynese will offer to teach you one of three techniques for addressing the battles at each of the outer houses. It doesn't matter which one you take, but the threat of a non- standard Game Over from a lackey sounding the alarm in Makulilkali may influence your decision... 8) Now go to each of the outer houses and fight a boss battle. Again, the alarmer in Makulilkali could sound the alarm and end the battle (and your game) right then and there, so get rid of him ASAP! 9) After getting all three Shard fragments, go back to the Grove of Silence. Elysed will leave your party and you'll be given two choices: the first one will put you in a boss battle with Elysed and a Sublime Spiritual of Natura (and some other miscellaneous mooks) and the second one ("Farewell, Elysed.") results in permanently losing her, a FAILURE CONDITION for recruiting Sasha, and a Natura Weapon. For purposes of this FAQ, pick the first one. Otherwise I may need the Blunt Instrument again, and right now it's on the stove with bacon frying. 10) After the boss battle, if Elysed was among your top 15 most used characters, she will rejoin your party. If not, go back to that separate save, put Elysed in your party, fight for 50 or so battles, and repeat these steps again. The Ibex Ring and the final Shard will be destroyed. We're done in Hibernia, but still no Sasha! Yep, there's more... Azhuacan. When you enter Azhuacan, Urpina will ask Sasha if there's a Shard there. Sasha says that there isn't! Wat?!! She asks Urpina to go back to Silmium and resume living a normal life. Um...Sasha? Did someone smuggle any mind- altering substances from Cerenaif or Kei into the party? No, we're seeing a very rare side of her here, and I'm not talking about the side you see in Leonard's ending or after Taria's Chapter 2 Scarlet Shards either. In any case, if you comply with Sasha's request, you'll get a nonstandard Game Over. Reload your last save and read on. Otherwise you need to go through the usual Endgame events by making your way to the Central Palace. Inside the Palace, Sasha will join you! There will be one dialog box after that asking if you are ready for the final boss or if you need time to prepare... FAILURE CONDITIONS: Oh so many: 1) Select Scarlet Shards for Chapter 2 instead of Chapter 3. 2) Run out of rumors in Bicyniro to render the Shard there inaccessible. 3) Light up the Walomir glyph in Megdasse during Chapter 2 Sigfrei to prevent the Scarlet Shard events from occurring. 4) Conspire with Adill during the Megdasse Shard events. This will render all future Shards from being accessible and Sasha won't like this choice either... 5) Conspire with one of the outer houses in Hibernia when acquiring the Shard fragments 6) Go to Azhuacan during the Hibernia events. Talk about Flag Spaghetti... 7) Choose the second option "Farewell, Elysed." at the final step of the Hibernia events. 8) Choose the first option at the final step of the Hibernia events with Elysed not being in your Top 15 most used party members. Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. 46) Socrates ?? " " Formation Acquired: Desert Lance Unique Role: Location: Mare Ilfee (Edinport) Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Has a lot of competition from characters like Tissisaaq, Mondo, Kahn, etc. and he ain't going to win that competition with such piss-poor stats. He does have 7 LP, so that's something going for him... How to Acquire: Urpina: In Chapter 1 after the events in Sugar Castle Lighthouse, go back to New Wise and have your Daddy...I mean Lewis Darling guide you to Edinport. Exit and re-enter Edinport, and then Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Have Nolan in your party, which violates the Palette Swap Rule. 2) Decline choice to recruit while conversing. Finally, go to Edinport without Nolan in your party and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Enter the Mare Ilfee from Thracini instead of Cerenaif for the first time. 2) Visit the Spirit Lake in the Northeast Boundary before visiting the Mare Ilfee. 3) Have Nolan in your party, which violates the Palette Swap Rule. 4) Decline choice to recruit while conversing. Taria: Any time after the Mare Ilfee Phoenix events are completed, go back to Edinport without Nolan in your party and Converse with Socrates. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Have Nolan in your party, which violates the Palette Swap Rule. 2) Decline choice to recruit while conversing. Balmaint: During 2nd Intermission Earth Serpent started after Part 6, Urpina Kidnapping Route, go to the Mare Ilfee through Cerenaif (Zegna). After the Urpina events, have Lewis Darling guide you to Edinport. Exit and re-enter Edinport and Converse. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Start Intermission 2 Earth Serpent in a way that prevents the Urpina Kidnapping Route from occurring (sooner than Part 6, keep Maximus in party, etc.). 2) Enter the Mare Ilfee from Thracini instead of Cerenaif for the first time. 3) Decline choice to recruit while conversing. 47) Strumiknen Normi Mercenary "I lost to Adill in Megdasse, but someday I will defeat him by my own hand!" Formation Acquired: Dragon's Rage Unique Role: Selfish Location: Maurehua (southern bridge) Specialty: Axes LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: As min-maxed as he is, take advantage of that Strength!!! Either stick with Axes (and probably miss a lot) or switch to Great Swords. How to Acquire: Urpina and Taria: Requires the Sigfrei Common Quest started (Chapter doesn't matter) and the Prayer Tower quest in Maurehua NOT STARTED before this point: Start the Prayer Tower quest, and then Converse in the town of Kilik (Per Leon481 DO NOT wait until the last step of the Prayer Tower's construction! Do it early!). This person will speak about tensions between House Erakleos and House Yanyouji regarding the Order of Shaams and Maurehua. Afterwards, go to the drawbridge to the south (while still in Maurehua--again, don't wait until the last step of tower construction). Strumiknen will be guarding the bridge, and you'll have the option to fight him (accept the challenge). After the fight, you'll have the option to recruit. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Find Sigfrei before going to Kilik or the southern drawbridge. 2) Wait until the final step of the Prayer Tower's construction before going to the southern drawbridge (per Leon481), as the final step overwrites the drawbridge events. 3) Decline option to fight Strumiknen, and then either find Sigfrei or get to the final step of the tower's construction. 4) Decline option to have him join your party. 5) Finish the Prayer Tower quest with any result (completed tower, Sigfrei found/incomplete tower, destroyed tower) before attempting to recruit. Leonard: Can't recruit. Balmaint: In Part 1 (Maurehua), once tower construction begins, Converse in the town of Kilik. This person will speak about tensions between House Erakleos and House Yanyouji regarding the Order of Shaams and Maurehua. Afterwards, go to the drawbridge to the south (while still in Maurehua). Strumiknen will be guarding the bridge, and you'll have the option to fight him (accept the challenge). After the fight, you'll have the option to recruit. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Wait until the final step of the Prayer Tower's construction before going to the southern drawbridge (per Leon481), as the final step overwrites the drawbridge events. 2) Decline option to fight Strumiknen, and then get to the final step of the tower's construction. 3) Decline option to have him join your party. 4) Finish Part 1: Maurehua before attempting to recruit. 48) Tissisaaq Hunter of the North "I take life from game, as mine'll someday be taken. Only being itself is eternal." Formation Acquired: Final Frontier Unique Role: Hunter (Initial position up (S)/Speed up (S)) Location: Northeast Boundary (Village of No Presence) Specialty: Spears LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With that formation?!! She's a speed demon! She's almost always going to be near-first on the timeline! Her DEX is not the greatest, but that can be managed with equipment. She'll do just fine with Spears (might have slight problems inflicting Stun (Sweep, Triumvirate) or Poison (Mizuchi)) or you can take advantage of that END and make her a tank, but that would be a complete waste of her unique role! How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Probably one of the easiest characters in the game to recruit for ANY Protagonist, go to the Village of No Presence twice and Converse. Accept offer to join. Simple as that! :) FAILURE CONDITION: Decline offer to join. 49) Tsubaki (Camelia) Witch Hunter " " Formation Acquired: Triple Threat Unique Role: Location: Southeast Boundary (Hole of Chaos) Specialty: Short Swords LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: With the third best overall stats in the game (Sasha is first, Hagar is second) and no real drawbacks (Sasha joins VERY late, Hagar has 1 LP)), take your pick! Whatever you want her to do, have her do it! Will she be the best at one particular weapon? Probably not, but she'll always be at least decent! You can even have her be a Mage if you want! How to Acquire: Urpina, Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: 1) The Arch Witch must NOT be in your Party during this entire process! 2) You will need to encounter her in at least ONE of the following places: - Gradion: After picking up the baby, go back to the same spot. Tsubaki will accuse the baby of being a witch, and you'll have to fight her. - Yaxart: At the shrine farthest to the north, you'll encounter her there. Then you will need to proceed with the pilgrimage until you unlock the True Macha Shrine, in which then you will need to fight Macha and then talk to Tsubaki again. - Termina (Erreich): During the process of recruiting or fighting Kreisa, talk to Erreich (the fisherman south-southeast of the Mare Termina). Tsubaki will interrupt some of this conversation. After recruiting or fighting Kreisa, go back to Erreich (if Kreisa was fought) or the spot he was at (if Kreisa was recruited). If Erreich is there, you can either accept or decline the option to recruit him (or if you're Leonard, you won't get the option because of Palette Swapped Jerome), in which you'll get another Tsubaki event afterward. If Erreich is not there, go to his spot to get the Tsubaki event to occur. - Termina (Taria's Workshop): With Taria in your party (Taria and Leonard only), visit her workshop. If you're playing Taria's Story, you'll have to go to Thracini first before this event can occur. 3) Once you encounter her in one of the four above places (again, WITHOUT the Arch Witch in your Party!!!), go to the Southeast Boundary and visit the Birdman Village. Normally after Orville flies and crash- lands, you'll immediately be taken inside the village. If this DOES NOT occur, then you visited the correct places. Visit the village again and Tsubaki will talk about slaying the witch of all witches. When this happens, go northeast to the Hole of Chaos. Depending on the Protagonist, a different set of events may occur: Urpina and Balmaint: After La Chasse gets pwned by the Chaos, choose to fight it. After the fight, choose the option to have Tsubaki join you. Leonard: After Tsubaki interrupts your conversation, Leonard gets pissed off and fights her. Afterward, the Arch Witch will offer to teleport you to the Solitary Island to get to the Phoenix Egg. Choose to accept and she'll send Tsubaki with you! Accept the offer to have her join. *********************************************************************** * NOTE: You will not be able to acquire Kumi's ship with this method, * * thus not being able to fight the Scarlet Fiend or acquire any of * * the items requested by the Imperial Library survey hut in the South-* * east Boundary in this Playthrough. You MIGHT be able to have the * * librarian ask for a different set of items located in the Southeast * * Boundary Mainland depending on when you started each phase of the * * Imperial Library side quest and when you finished each Part of * * Leonard's Story. * *********************************************************************** Taria: After La Chasse gets pwned by the Chaos, choose to knock out Tsubaki. :D Taria will ask for help from her master, but she tell her to take care of the problem herself. ^_^ Defeat the Chaos and then choose the option to have Tsubaki join you. FAILURE CONDITIONS: 1) Recruit the Arch Witch before attempting these steps. 2) Complete the Birdman Side Quest at any point before recruiting Tsubaki. 3) Decline offer for her to join. 50) Victoria Grand Empress Dowager " " Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Thracini (Elhuacan) Specialty: Staff (Incantations) LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: She's a very good Mage, so you might as well keep her that way. She's also a cool granny with some funny ass spoken lines! (some even break the fourth wall!) How to Acquire: Urpina, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. Leonard: Simply visit Elhuacan before Part 3 and Converse with the guard there. FAILURE CONDITION: Visit the Silver Lake in the Northeast Boundary before visiting Elhuacan. 51) Yohman Suspicious Person "" Formation Acquired: Unique Role: Location: Azhuacan (eastern shore, same way you got there in Urpina Chapter 1) Specialty: Clubs LP=0 Recovery: Can Send on Mission: Yes Recommended Use: Protector/Tank. He starts with the right weapon for it and has an Endurance of 13, so you might as well. You can try other weapons with him, but since he's only available for one character, I wouldn't put too much work into him beyond one weapon type. How to Acquire: Urpina: Simply leave Azhuacan the same way you came in: via Yohman's services. FAILURE CONDITION: Leave Azhuacan in Chapter 1 through any other method (like going back to Testika) Leonard, Taria, and Balmaint: Can't recruit. ========== V. Credits ========== 1) The authors and contributors of both Japanese Wikis: https://kamikouryaku.com/saga_sg/ https://www.spoiler.jp/game/saga_sg/hiiro/index.php The biggest reason this game had no FAQs for so long is because it has branches upon branches upon branches that are often not seen in most video games, much less most RPGs! The above two sites + Google Translate have been the closest thing the west has had to a strategy guide! 2) All the fine folks on GameFAQs Message Boards ranging from back in 1998 when I first played SaGa Frontier up until today! A few come to mind: - im_biggy: Unlimited Saga Character Build FAQs (Autowin is autowin) and Let's Play on YouTube. - NessEggman: contributions to Unlimited Saga and SaGa Scarlet Grace. He also mentioned that Angle and Socrates recruiting options are more lax than what's mentioned in this FAQ. I'll confirm this in my next lap, and will put the updated success and failure conditions in the next version. - Zach Keene for confirming that the Kahn Side Quest works in Urpina's Story if you decline the Grand Empress Dowager's offer in Chapter 1. - /u/LanceHeart for pointing out that Tsubaki cannot be recruited if you have the Arch Witch in your Party. 3) Square ENIX for continuing to develop this often-misunderstood RPG series that is not for everyone, but those that love it love it a lot! Since this is one of the first FAQs for this game on GameFAQs, and there is SOO much to this game, it's possible that I may not have the correct information in a few places. Please let me know on the GameFAQs Message Boards, so the next version will have the appropriate corrections (don't worry about pointing out the blanks--they will be filled in in the future).
