Combat and Abilities

Stats and Abilities

Past games had various means of improving your character's abilities, whether they be focused around XP points, or even putting money into yourself. Here in Kiwami 2, you will earn five differently colored types of experience, and these experience points are then applied to either directly improving your base stats or to learning new skills.

It's kinda obscured what these mean, but a thorough look through abilities show that these are what the different experience types translate to:

  • Red - Strength
  • Blue - Agility
  • Yellow - Spirit
  • Green - Technique
  • Purple - Charm

Experience is earned through combat, through eating, through playing Minigames, through earning completion awards, through completing Substories. Just about anything you do in this game can net you some form of experience.

Base Stats

Your four base stats can be improved by applying increasing amounts of experience to each. You'll first fill ten markers at the same amount of experience per increase, then buy the "Limit Level" upgrade to reset the bar down to zero and apply ten more at a greater amount. Each increase adds two points to that stat. This can continue until you gone past the "Lv. 4" amount. Once you hit that, you're locked in until all four base stats are at 200, then you can buy the "Limit Break" upgrades to increase through the final level. At that point, each upgrade will increase the stat by ten points.

The base stats are as follows:

  • Health - Increases your maximum health.
  • Attack - Increases your attack damage.
  • Defense - Decreases your damage lost.
  • Heat Gauge - Improves your maximum Heat Gauge.

And here's how all the costs shake out:

Battle Skills

These are skills tied strictly to battle. Buying them tends to cost more than straight stat increases, but they'll tend to have a greater noticeable effect once you get them, comparatively. These can be thought of as a combination of the "Soul" and "Tech" routes in older Yakuza games.

Heat Actions

Unlike Yakuza 6, Kiwami 2 tracks your Heat Actions. You can see which ones you complete by going to the Completion List, going to the "different Heat Action" section, and pressing Square to see the list. This actually does not list every single Heat Action. There are quite a few Extreme Heat Actions that don't show up here. That said, those are not tracked for the purpose of completion, so I don't intend to cover them too deeply here.
