Two Years Later
He Can’t Be Far
When you finally gain control of Deacon, you’ll be riding your bike. Follow along after Boozer and Leon as they make their way along winding paths. This is a bit of an auto-scroller, so no matter how fast you go, you’ll never catch up. Save your nitrous booster in case something goes wrong and you need to catch up.
Follow the two up the road, watching out for cars, especially the ambulance on the left ahead. Using the O button may help you drift on sharper corners.
Not long after you ditch the road, you’ll head down a dirt path. Stay to the right as Leon will toss a Molotov to the left of a small rock ramp. Go over the ramp on the right to avoid. The next time he does this, he’ll block a bridge. There will be a smaller ramp just to the side of it that will allow you to hop onto the bridge past the flame, but watch out for the tree on the right just after launching.
Keep following Leon until Boozer gets a good shot in on him. Not long after that, the bike chase will end.
We’ll Make it Quick
It’s time to track this guy on foot. Press the right analog stick in (like a button) to activate Survival Vision. You’ll see footprints in the direction in the direction of Boozer. Follow that path to the right. Follow Boozer along the path and through a small gap in the rocks, after which you’ll come to a clearing.
Use your Survival Vision again before you reach the intersection and you’ll see a clue on the ground right next to you. Press Square to inspect it. This will lead you to the right again. Continue following Boozer down the hill and into a camp.
Run through the camp and across the bridge. On the other side, follow Boozer to a railing and hop the railing instead of going through the rocks. Continue down the hill to the bottom.
Return to Bike
After the scene ends, you’ll earn the Finders Keepers trophy and get a collectible: Leon – Crude Drawing of an Angel Statue. Return up the hill and backtrack to the camp. As you approach the unlit campfire, watch the ground to the left to find Sterilizer. On the far side of the campfire, you’ll see a Rag sitting on the ground sitting between a tent and… an outhouse?
Open the Survival Wheel by holding the L1 button, press up and left to select the healing section. From there, hold the R1 button to craft bandages, and then hold R2 to use them and heal up.
Once you’re healed up, follow Boozer back up the hill to your bikes.

I Say We Head North
There’s nothing to do for most of this trip, but half-way through, you’ll get a tutorial about what is essentially the player menu. It’s made up of four parts: Map, Skills, Inventory, and Storylines. You can access the entire menu by pressing the touch-pad or swipe in the appropriate direction to skip to that part. Most of this is exactly as you’d expect, but the Storyline tab also houses information on your collectibles as well.
Once you’re done, bounce out of the menu and you’ll continue along with Boozer until you come to a blockade. Move to the front of the jeep with Boozer and hold the Square button to move it.
Immediately after it’s been moved, you’ll be greeted with another quick time prompt. The flashing icon indicates you need to keep pressing the button on-screen. For me, it was the O button, but I’m not sure it’s the same every time.
With the event complete, you’ll get taught the basics of melee combat. The basics are quite simple: R1 dodge rolls in the direction you were moving, R2 swings your weapon, and moving towards an enemy and pressing R2 will automatically change targets for you.
Rolling is your friend! It costs stamina to roll, but it’s a relatively small amount, so unless you just sprinted non-stop, you’re unlikely to run out. It’s cheap, fast, has great range, and prevents melee damage, which can be quite substantial. Don’t be shy about using it. |
If you haven’t finished the actual tutorial steps, after the quick time event, press R2 to instantly kill the enemy in front of you. After that, turn around and attack the other drifter to make him fall. Follow the dodge tutorial to evade your next enemy and get some distance. Strike one of the two enemies before rolling away. This should hopefully create some distance between the two, giving you the opportunity to safely kill each of them one at a time. Normally I'd do a "New Enemy" Section here, but this is a pretty scripted event.
Hop back on Boozer’s bike when you’re ready, and he’ll take you to a tunnel.
Storyline Update
- Chasing Leon – 50%
Bad Way to Go Out
Continue along in the tunnel until a scene plays. When you regain control, just aim directly at the flames ahead. Two Swarmers (a type of Freaker) will come out, one at a time, to attack.
New Enemy: Swarmers |
Treat them like very aggressive, melee only human enemies. Fighting only one or two with a melee weapon is doable, but any more than that you’ll need distance. If you have more than three or four at anything but long range (or traps), run. They can keep up pretty well, but they have a pretty short attention span, so you can loop back around and try again. They can be killed with stealth attacks, but they start gathering in large groups pretty early in the game, so be extra careful when sneaking around. |
The shotgun is more than powerful enough to take them out at a decent range and you’ll find plenty of ammo, so once you have a decent shot lined up, just fire.
Continue into the tunnel, but make sure to turn on your flashlight (D-Pad down). Further ahead, you’ll see a set of cars, one of which will have a red blinking light. Once you see the three Swarmers become active, back up a little. The blue truck on the right and the white truck and red car on the left form a nice bottle-neck, making it easy to pick your enemies off as they come for you.
You may have noticed small icons by the Swarmers’ bodies that disappear when you walk over. You can collect Freaker Ears from their bodies by simply walking over them. They’ll automatically go into your inventory and can be turned in to merchants for rewards. |
Approach the car with the blinking light and go around to the front. Hold square to open the hood (or bonnet) and then hold it again to take the alarm out, which will turn into Scrap. From here on, most fully closed trunks (boots) or hoods will have basic crafting supplies, but cop cars in particular, can have better things like ammo.
With that in mind, check other cars in the area and watch for an open door next to a cop cruiser on the left. Check the trunk for some shotgun ammo before heading into the doorway.
Turn left and check the small room for a Sterilizer and a Rag. Use the Survival Wheel to turn that into a bandage.
Crafting supplies and final products each has its own max capacities, so it’s usually worth it to immediately craft with supplies to maximize your holding capacity. |
Once you’re ready, take a trip through the foreboding hallway nearby. A Swarmer will burst out of the doorway and lunge onto you. You’ll need to rapidly press the button that appears on-screen (was O for me both times). If you succeed, you’ll instantly kill it. If you don’t, you’ll die.
Check the room the swarmer just came out of to find some supplies. On the floor to the left will be a Sterilizer and on the right will be a Bandage and a Rag. Grab these before continuing down the hallway.
At the far end, hold square to push the truck out of the way. Enemies will appear to your left, so back up a little to the right (where Boozer is) to put yourself on the other side of a choke-point. As with last time, wait for the two Swarmers to come to you and kill them. Make sure to grab the Scrap from the car alarm.
Near where you grabbed the alarm, there’s another doorway leading into a small hall (this is on the right side of the tunnel). Move along to the far side of the hallway. You’ll see a door leading back into the tunnel and some Scrap sitting in corner of the hallway. Grab that when the Freakers outside aren’t looking and then head into the tunnel to clean up the three Swarmers.
When they are dead, check the police cars on the left side of the tunnel for ammo. On the way out of the tunnel, you’ll find the last Nest on the right side. Grab the supplies out of Boozer’s bike and make some more Molotovs (upper right on the Survival Wheel). Toss it into the Nest and two Swarmers will come out to attack you.
After leaving the tunnel, hop on the back of Boozer’s bike to get to Crazy Willie’s.
Storyline Update:

- Gear Up for the Ride – 17%
You Got a Death Wish
Make your way down into Crazy Willie’s, you’ll see a pop-up that says “Infestation Zone Discovered: Crazy Willie’s Infestation.”
An Infestation Zone is an area with a high density of Freakers and several nests. You don’t need to clear out the infestation now, but to do so, you’d need to burn all of the nests in the area. Right now, you shouldn’t have the materials to do so anyway, so we’ll come back for that later.
For now, continue down the path and towards the flatbed truck to be introduced to the Newts.
New Enemy: Newts |
Surprisingly, the real trouble is that exact dynamic. Because they tend to stay away from you and go to certain points, it also means they tend to congregate in large packs, so if you get low on health or are forced to go through their territory, you’ll likely be dealing with a lot. Try to twist that to your advantage. If you know where they’ll be, you can try to manipulate the battlefield to your advantage and engage them when you want to. Know when they’re around and make sure that they enter play on YOUR terms. |
You can completely ignore this batch of Newts, just don’t attack them. On the flatbed truck directly between you and them, you’ll find a 2x4. Grab that and wrap around the flatbed to the right. Continue around the large silos on the right but be careful as there will be a Swarmer in the field beyond. You can sneak around it from behind to kill it with a stealth kill if it’s still busy eating, or you can just walk up to it and shoot it.
Keep moving towards the rest of the settlement to the west (follow the slightly lit up section of your compass). On the way will be a cop car you can check for ammo.
From that car, stick to the grass to your right as you descend into the settlement. By a station wagon ahead will be another Swarmer with the munchies. Take him out with a stealth attack before heading to the house to the right of the station wagon.
Jump through the window into the bathroom to find a Bandage by the sink. Move through the door and go through the hole in the wall at the other end of the next room. Search the room for a Baseball Bat on the left and a Sterilizer in the fridge on the right. In the next bathroom, grab the Bandage on the sink before hopping out of the window.
Keep sticking to the rock wall on your right and follow it as it wraps around and turns into a fence. Move through the grass to stealth kill the Swarmer munching. From this position, there should be 2 or 3 Swarmers in a small lot to your left and an orange building in front of you. Go around the right-hand side of the building so you can jump into the bathroom.
Grab the Bandage on the sink. In the next room is a Baseball Bat to your left, if you need it. To your right will be a dresser with the Frontier Motel Safe Combination in it. Grab that. Check the kitchen for a Rag. To the back of the living room, you’ll find more ammo. Leave the house the way you came so you don’t accidentally bump into the Swarmers in front of the building.
From where you hopped out, head down the hill and check the crate next to the shack on your left for Kerosene. Just ahead of that is a truck with a Rag on the back. From the back of the truck, take a right and head into the garage. Inside, you’ll find Kerosene and a Rag on the left as well as a Sidearm Suppressor under the hood of the car. Beyond the car will be more Kerosene and a 2x4.
Go through the door in the corner to your left. You’ll end up in a small enclosed yard. The blue car will have another Sidearm Suppressor, but you can only carry one at a time. Turn to face the blue building with the large garage door. To the left of the garage door is a small white storage shed you can climb on (press X) to reach the roof.
On the roof, you’ll be attacked by three Newts. While the sidearm may be more effective at first, the Newts will close fast and you won’t need the Shotgun ammo later. They come up slow enough that you should have time to pick-off each one individually, but you can use the vents as barriers if you need a little distance from your enemies.
Remember to collect the Freaker Ears from the Newts. Load up your shotgun and check the South East corner of the roof for a hole leading into the building.
Upon landing, a Newt will take notice of you and attack, usually coming from the cash register area. Kill it before scrounging the area for a Beer Bottle on the fridge, Scrap in the back right corner, Kerosene by the empty cold drink display, and more Kerosene on the shelves behind the register.
Go through the door behind the registers and check the desk to find the Seeking Gorgeous Man collectible. Check the tall metal cabinet nearby for ammo before heading into the garage proper.
As soon as you enter the workroom, grab the Sterilizer on the table to the right. You’ll also find Scrap and Kerosene on a shelf in the far right corner. Move along the back wall to find Scrap on a work-bench. Continue around the outside of the room to find a Rag and the Fuel Pump you need by/on the bike. Under the hood of the truck will be Scrap and a Rag will sit on the floor next to it.
Find Boozer
Return back through the building to the store-front and exit through the front door. Make sure to check your surroundings and then head straight for the waypoint to help Boozer. When you get there, take cover behind one of the barriers and starting shooting at the three Rippers with your sidearm (make sure to take off the suppressor if you put it on).
New Enemy: Rippers |
Go for headshots and try to hit them when they are slightly visible behind cover to clear them out with minimal risk to you. Just be careful if they rush you. It’s not common, but it can happen. You could use a close-range weapon if you have one, but running is a viable option as well. |
Try to take out the one standing Ripper with a single clean shot before the fighting really begins. If you need to, you can also go for body shots. They don’t take a whole lot to take down either way. They have a tendency to wiggle while in cover, so try to get in as many hits as possible while they are hiding and not shooting on you.
Once you’ve cleared out the three, run up to check on Boozer. When you reach him, you'll unlock the Just a Flesh Wound trophy.
Storyline Update
- He’s My Brother – 6%
- Ripped Apart – 4%

Swarmers are your basic Freaker. They have most of the capabilities of regular humans except they trade-off the use of items and a little bit of awareness for physical ability. These enemies are very fast, agile, can climb quickly, can lunge pretty far, and do huge damage if they hit you. If they get a hold of you, they can also kill you with a single bite, though this is rare and can be countered.
Newts are essentially small, less aggressive Swarmers. They don’t move quite as fast and tend to hide in rafters or on rooftops unless you go after them or you’re weak.
Rippers are basic enemies. They will use ranged attacks and take cover, but they are little more beyond that. If you’ve ever played any cover-based shooter, you can handle them just like you would handle most basic enemies in any other game.
