Walkthrough

Drifters on the Mountain

At the top of the watchtower, check the Weapons Locker and grab the Crossbow. Turn towards the door and check the Ammo Crate for ammo. This should top you off for both of your current weapons. When you’re done checking things out, go through the door and take a right to make your way downstairs.

The Crossbow is a stealth weapon. It’s got pretty good punch, but the main advantage is that it’s a silent weapon. As long as you have bolts, you have a way of killing people from far away quietly.

The trade-off is that you need to adjust for gravity. The further the target, the higher up you need to aim over your target to hit. Conversely, that’s mitigated by your height. If you’re above your target, you don’t need to aim as high. You’ll also need to account for enemy movement. Make sure you lead your target so the bolt arrives at the spot they will be instead of where they were.

At the bottom, we can check out the camp for a few supplies. Immediately to your left is a little craft area under a canopy. The closest corner will have Scrap and Kerosene, while the far side will have a Baseball Bat. On the opposite side of the camp will be an overlook platform with Sterilizer, a Bandage, and a Rag. Use as much of this to craft as you can, especially if your inventory is full of these raw materials.

Find the path in the camp and follow it out of the complex. As you walk past Boozer’s bike, you’ll find out that you can make Crossbow Bolts from Cedar Saplings and Scrap. You’ve found plenty of scrap by this point. You’ll find the Saplings in small trees scattered around. Keep an eye out for little trees that are roughly your height to find more of what you need.

Marauder Hunting

As you make your way out of the camp, Deacon will notice something that you may not have: a drifter. Drifter is a catch-all term for groups of people that don’t have affiliation with a major group or camp. You’re probably considered a drifter, but it’s never really addressed.

Anyway, follow the path as it wraps around your tower to the right. You’ll start to head downhill, but when the path splits, follow it to the left to find a police car with ammo in the trunk. Continue down the right side (no need to sneak yet) until you come to a bend in the road by a blue car. Check the car for a Sidearm Suppressor if you need one before following the path.

As you make your way down, you’ll start to see flashlights off to the left. Not long after, it’ll explain that you can use your binoculars to mark enemies so they are always on your screen. This allows you to keep track of where they are, their awareness of your presence (for human enemies), and how much health they have.

Marauder Camp

Move down towards the camp a little and crouch down in the bushes so you can scope out the camp.

New Enemy: Drifters

Drifters are not much different the Rippers in practice, though they are less frantic, more composed, more coordinated, and generally better armed. They also come in relatively large groups set in easily defensible positions that will often have traps to deter intruders, so watch out.

They can hear you much better than Freakers can, so if you’re sneaking up on them, you need to crouch-walk slowly or crouch-walk decisively. It’s possible to get close and perform a stealth kill before they react, but if you dawdle, you’ll lose that advantage. Watch the little speaker icon just to the left of your compass to get an idea of how loud you’re being.

Once things break out into a fight, you’ll want to be careful of being ganged up on. They aren’t the smartest, but they can be very focused and will absolutely walk around behind you if that’s the shortest path to you.

They tend to take cover while fighting and will sometimes move between cover. Often, they are somewhat conservative in their actions, so use this to your advantage. If you can see them and you’re not being shot at, take them down.

Beyond those points, strategy will be covered on a case-by-case basis due to the variety of weapons they carry.

The camp is split into two parts, more or less. There’s a top level with two Drifters and a bottom area with four Drifters, a couple of which will be on patrol. This camp is quite long and so you may only be able to see one drifter on the top level and two or three on the bottom. Mark as many as you can, and feel free to wait to see if a patrol walks into your line of sight.

Once you have a few marked, move to the left. There’s a slight elevation that runs above the upper level to the east. Go up here and you can quietly sneak up on the two Drifters on the top level. Before you go in for the kill, you may be able to see the remaining Drifters you couldn’t see before. They would be S/SW of your position. You can also find a Cedar Sapling up here by a rock if you need it.

The two on the upper level should be static and just looking over the lower section. The guard on the right is a simple kill, but make sure that a patrol hasn’t come way up on the left side before killing the left guard.

This is your first opportunity to search a body. Most intelligent enemies will have searchable bodies. Sometimes you’ll just find a piece of scrap, but you can sometimes find better weapons on the ground next to them and ammo on their body. It’s a pretty quick process, and it doesn’t generally hurt to check.

Search the bodies and then take your time making sure you’ve marked the four other enemies in the camp. You may also want to make sure that what you THINK is a drifter isn’t actually a Freaker off in the distance, because I definitely did that by accident.

Once everyone is marked, you’ll want to start from the right/west side of the camp. There should be a static guard by some logs near the mouth of the camp and a patrolling guard that walks nearby. Wait for the patrol to walk away and take out the static guard. Hide in the nearby bushes and wait for the patrol to return for an easy kill.

Climb back to the upper level and move south. From here, look back to the lower level. There are bushes near the static guard. The patrol stops pretty closely to the stationary guard, so don’t attack either until the patrol moves away. After a few steps, he’ll start to turn away from the bush. Take out the patrol since you know that other guard will never turn around and poses no threat. After that, kill the final guard.

Search their bodies before moving on to find your bike.

Dude, Where’s My Bike?

You’ve got a fair bit of a hike to make back to your bike. If it’s dark, you may want to wait until it’s light out, but I suspect that the rain is scripted at this point, which makes it harder for enemies, including Freakers, to notice you.

You can either slink through bushes a little at a time towards your bike or you can just book it. I did the sneaking thing for a little bit, but it’s time-consuming and natural land formations make it tough to get by some of the Swarmers, all of which are somewhat randomly placed, it seems.

I would recommend just running for your bike. Try to keep an eye out for where Swarmers might be the same as you’d keep an eye for obstacles and take a jog. Try to save your stamina in case a couple of Swarmers spot you. At that point, you should be able to lose them by sprinting with about half of your stamina bar. Don’t expend it all at once lest you find yourself in a jam and really need that energy.

You’ll reach your hiding spot before long. Unfortunately, it looks like your bike wasn’t so well hidden.

Follow the guy nearby. He’ll lead you all the way back to Copeland’s camp. As before, you can just b-line it straight for your target, just make sure to keep your stamina up so you can use it if Swarmers start chasing you.

When you get to the camp, approach the front gate and the guards will open it for you.

Welcome to Camp Copeland

Upon entering the camp, a new marker appears directing you to talk to Manny. There’s some stuff to see in the camp, but we’ll do that after. Stroll over to chat with Manny.

After the chat with Manny, you’ll meet Copeland. Follow Copeland upstairs as you chat with him. When the conversation is finally finished, check under the flag by the couch to find Copeland – “Hunting Season”, and then look around by the Ham Radio in the corner to find Copeland – “The Right to Bear Arms”. With those in hand, follow the markers down the ramps and back to Manny to get a new bike.
