NERO Installations

Cascade Installations

Little Bear Lake

This Nero Camp is the first that you encounter in the game and completing it is part of the story. It can't be missed.

Mark the waypoint and enjoy the leisurely ride there but make sure to stop before you reach the gate as there are potentially a couple of Swarmers by the gate.

Take care of any Swarmers before heading in sneak around the outside of the camp to see what danger awaits within. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to wander quite a bit, so you'll need to look alive to stay alive. There are likely a couple more Swarmers on the main road running through the camp.

If that's all you see at the moment, there are probably more near the main structure. For now, use the jersey barriers and sandbags to hide you from view while taking care of any Swarmers on the road.

Start circling the main building counter-clockwise. You'll see a dumpster. If an enemy is coming, jump in there and wait for them to pass for an easy kill. There are also crates leading up to the roof. You'll likely find at least one Swarmer patrolling around the building and probably one more Swarmer by the barracks. On the back of the building will be a little nook leading to a body with a Fire Axe.

Once you're done with your initial pass, do another sweep around the perimeter and go up each path out of the camp a little way to make sure you've killed any enemies that might wander into the camp of their own volition.

If you haven't seen it, the Generator is on the west side of the main building. Feel free to explore the camp for goodies. Check the police car for Ammo. The barracks has some Kerosene while the other cars will have basic supplies like Scrap. Once you're done, we'll get the gas and prepare.

Preparation

First thing's first, to find the fuel, stand in the middle of the camp and follow the road leading east out of the camp. You'll pass a blue car before coming to an intersection with a dirt road. On the grass between the two paths will be a blown out SUV/wagon and the Fuel will be on the ground in full view from where you are.

Take this back to the camp and put it into the generator, but don't activate it yet. Take the fuel back to your bike and top it off. Finally, you can take the fuel back to the camp and set it next to the building where the giant blue crates lead up to the roof.

There's one last thing (don't know if this works right now). When you activate the generator, it's going to turn the loudspeakers back on which will inevitably draw Swarmers. You can definitely destroy the speakers AFTER, but check and see if you can do this BEFORE activating the generator. There's one set on each forward-facing corner. You'll just need to cut the wires, but even if it doesn't let you yet, it's worth finding them so you can cut them quickly.

With that done, head back to the generator and turn it on. Scramble quickly to the roof and cut the speaker wires if you haven't yet. Once you're done with that, look down on the side of the building to where you put the gas can. If you were fast, you should only have three Swarmers to deal with, and if you're very fast, you should be able to shoot the gas to cut that number even more.

Kill them as they come up and don't be shy about jumping off the roof if you need to.

Once they are all dead and the speakers are silent, find any of the doors into the main building and head inside. There are two main sections and a corridor connecting them. Check the east section first to find your Sterile Bandages in a white crate. You'll also find a Nero Injector. This will raise one of two (and eventually three) attributes. I hardly have issues managing stamina, so I tend to go with health, but the decision is really about what you feel like you need. After making your choice, you'll unlock the Better Living Through Chemistry trophy.

Once you've got that, head further into the section and grab the Nero Recorder on the right with Mobile Medical Unit Recording - 0820. You'll also find a Gun Locker and Cot to sleep on in case you need to recover. As you loop back to the door, you'll find a Bandage on a bookshelf to the right.

In the main corridor, you'll find a Med Kit on a shelf on the right as you head to the next section. Just beyond that will be Ammo before heading into the next section.

In the west section, you'll find a Beer Bottle on a shelf just as you enter. Check the storage closet nearby to find a Swarmer Ear and then search the body at the end for an IPCA Tech.

Old Pioneer Cemetery

You'll find this checkpoint far to the NE of the Old Pioneer Cemetery and the Pioneer Cemetery Infestation. This is just NE of where the game begins and where you find Leon's Stash during Out of Nowhere.

From the Cemetery, hop on the road and keep heading NE. The road will wrap around the north end of the cemetery until you come across the gate.

As soon as you reach the front gate, hop up on the guard booth and cut the wires for the Speaker. Next to the booth, you'll see a barracks building blocked by an SUV. Push it out of the way to clear a path, but don't go in just yet.

Proceed further into the camp and before you reach the NERO building, you'll see a body slumped over a desk on the right side near a tree. Tucked in a corner to the right of him is a Gas Can. Grab that and the Pistol next to the body if you like.

Go through the barracks tent now and you'll enter the back yard of the building. There are four Swarmers munching on bodies to the back of the yard. Immediately to your left, you'll find the Generator just on the opposite side of the fence from where you found the Gas Can.

Use the portapotties to get up on top of the NERO building and cut the two Speakers up here. Once they are destroyed, fill the Generator. Once it's filled, turn it on, and you should be able to enter the building. Inside, you'll find Sterilizer, a Bandage, a Medkit, a Nero Injector and a Nero Recorder with collectible Mobile Medical Unit Recording - 1111.

Horse Lake

You'll find the Horse Lake checkpoint north of the O'Leary Mountain Safehouse and a little before the tunnel leading to Marion Forks.

This checkpoint is a nightmare because it has a literal Horde of Swarmers right in the middle. You should only take this checkpoint on during the day and only with an excessive amount of throwable explosives. A rifle with good range is also useful here.

Approach the checkpoint from the south and you'll come upon a slightly derailed train on the tracks that run over the checkpoint below. Leave your bike facing away from this area in case you need to make a quick getaway.

Looking at the train, you'll see the engine on the south end, an attached car just behind that. On the middle of the bridge are two more cars that have partially capsized. Inside of each of these is a huge number of Swarmers. Each one has an ideal angle for tossing into it.

South Car

For the south of the two cars, walk up to the engine and then to the next car (the one attached to it). On the east side of the car will be a bush and a rock outcropping. If you wedge yourself in between the rocks and the train car, you can toss an explosive in through the side door of the first car. After you do so, retreat down the hill some and hide behind the large truck so they don't see you when they come out. Try to mark them if you can.

North Car

To hit the north car, you'll want to situate yourself in a mirror position on the other side of the train. Run the long way around the area to make sure none of the Freakers accidentally see you. Look back at the train from the north and walk down the hill to the right to stand next to the Nero building. Wedge yourself between the rock wall to the left and the Nero building to the right. You want to throw explosives in from as far away as possible and then immediately run around the building to hide from view.

Each time you bomb one of the cars, you'll want to wait until they go back to their train car to rest. Once they are ALL back (so you get the maximum effect), toss another explosive. You'll want to whittle them down like this a little at a time. When they get low, you can wrap around the north end of the train and sit in the bush just to the east of it. This gives you a good line of sight for most rifles and you can clean them up.

This is likely to be your first Horde, which would unlock the One Down trophy.

The Checkpoint

Once all of the Freakers are dead, the Horde will stay dead and you can proceed with fixing the camp. First, go under the bridge and climb on the guard booth. From here cut the wire for the Speakers here. Go to the north end of the train and you'll find gas sitting up against the front/back. On the nearby hill (leading down) will be an SUV that you can push down to the Nero building and use to climb up onto the building.

Climb up on the building and cut the wires for the two Speakers, one on each of the building parts. With those cut, grab the Gas Can and bring it onto the roof. From here, drop into the small fenced in yard. Pour that gas into the Generator and turn it on. Once it's on, the gate nearby will open.

Inside the building, you'll find a Nero Injector, Field Recording - 1260, Sterilizer, two Beer Bottles, a MedKit, a Bandage, a Box of Nails, and a Rag.

Nero Research Site 1

This spot is pretty hard to get to, and you may not be able to reach it until you improve your bike pretty considerably. Even with the mid-level upgrades from Copeland's Camp, I missed the jump for this twice and only made it up there as early as I did by accident. I bounced off a rock near the side of the ridge and it zipped me to the top for some reason.

This Research Site is just a small outcropping and not a building like the other installations in the Cascades. It's up on a ridge and the only way to get to it (without glitching) is to make a tough jump by approaching from the NW.

Once you land, there's no other puzzle. Simply collect your reward, which a Nero Injector, Scrap, a Beer Bottle and a Nero Recorder with the Flight Data Recording - 2097 collectible. If you need gas, there's also a Gas Can nearby.
