The existence of the Tree of Life and its connection to the Cintamani Stone is foreshadowed throughout the game. The walls in the underground area of the Nepalese temple feature carvings of tree imagery. Also, one of the corpses from the Nazi expedition is holding a book with the image of a tree on its cover. Also, the stairs leading to the entrance of Shambhala is hidden beneath a lone, dead tree in the Tibetan monastery.
Tenzin is voiced by Pema Dhondup. In the game, Tenzin's daughter is named Pema.

Tenzin's namesake is Tenzin Norgay, a Tibetan Sherpa who accompanied Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mount Everest, becoming one of the first people to complete the climb.
Karl Schäfer is based on Ernst Schäfer, who led the real-life Nazi Ahnenerbe expeditions to Tibet in the 1930s. However, the real Schäfer was interned by the Allies in 1945, became a professor in Venezuela in 1949, was an adviser to King Leopold III of Belgium in 1954, and the curator of the Department of Natural History at the Lower Saxony State Museum through the 1960s. He died in 1992, long before his fictional counterpart.
In his introductory scene, Harry has NDI printed on his shirt. This stands for Naughty Dog Incorporated.
At the end of the Borneo area, Nate and Sully have to jump off a cliff. Sully's quip, "After you, Butch," is a shout-out to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which had a similar scene.

The Cintamani is a wish-fulfilling jewel within both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It is one of several Mani Jewels seen in Buddhist scripture.
