Why won't Freke teach me spells?

I rescued Sage Freke from 3-1. He's safely in the Nexus. My intelligence is 11. All Freke ever says is that he's too old to help me. Oh, and his apprentice wouldn't teach me spells either (and now won't talk to me cause I dropped my controller and attacked him and he fought back). What am I doing wrong? Is it that my magic level that needs to be above 10 instead of intelligence like I've been told?

You need your magic stat 10+ to learn magic and your intelligence stat 10+ to have a spot to remember a spell. As for getting Freke to stop attacking you I'm not sure if there is a way to do it other then finishing the current game and starting a new one.
