Game Trivia

  • In 2010, the U.S. Air Force linked 1,700 PS3 consoles together to form a supercomputer. This computer could form over 500,000,000,000,000 calculations per second, over 50 times faster than the average laptop at the time. This was done to save costs; a traditional system would have cost 10 to 20 times more than the PS3 consoles did!

  • Some early criticism of the PS3 was directed at its logo, whose font is derived from the font for the logo of the 2003 "Spider-Man" film, and thus dubbed lazy and unoriginal.

  • While Sony was criticized early in the PS3's launch for its high costs, these costs were actually below what the console should've sold for; early sales of the console lost Sony as much as $200 for each console sold. Sony did this because they expected the cost of making the console to drop over time - thus resulting in profits. This was a flub, however, as Sony lost approximately $2,000,000,000 (U.S. dollars) by the end of the 2007 fiscal year. Production costs would eventually be halved by January 2008.

  • Most games on the PlayStation 3 support trophies, which are earned by completing in game tasks. If one were to look closely at a larger image of any trophy -- from Bronze to Platinum -- in order, one can see the Square, Triangle, Circle, and Cross buttons from the traditional PlayStation controllers in the middle.

  • The 2011 PSN (Playstation Network) hack caused the service to go down for 23 days, preventing all PS3 and PSP users from accessing it. During that time, over 77 million accounts had personal information exposed, making it one of the largest data breaches in history.
