While Sony was criticized early in the PS3's launch for its high costs, these costs were actually below what the console should've sold for; early sales of the console lost Sony as much as $200 for each console sold. Sony did this because they expected the cost of making the console to drop over time - thus resulting in profits. This was a flub, however, as Sony lost approximately $2,000,000,000 (U.S. dollars) by the end of the 2007 fiscal year. Production costs would eventually be halved by January 2008.
