II – Trophy Guide After years of waiting, fans of trophies can finally rejoice! Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the most critically acclaimed games on the Playstation 3, has finally received a trophy patch. The trophy list includes 34 trophies – 1 platinum, 5 gold, 9 silver, and 19 bronze - that you can add to your collection. Before jumping in, however, be sure to download patch 2.00. Also, be aware that any save file created before downloading this patch will not be able to earn trophies, and you do not receive trophies retroactively if you load up an old save. After installing the patch, fire up the this PS3 classic and start a new game to begin your hunt for the platinum! 000.0 – Road Map Earning all 34 trophies won’t be easy, and you’ll have to play the game at least eight times to get everything. You can earn almost all of them within two or so runs, but you are required to have all 40 emblems in order to obtain the Snake Eater iPod track, which is needed for Sounds of the Battlefield. Although you can earn multiple emblems in a single run, five require their own playthrough. Step One: First Playthrough Just play the game naturally, focus on enjoying the game and earning all of the story-related trophies. If you want, start looking for collectibles and weapons, and nab any of the miscellaneous trophies while you’re at it. The main purpose here is to get a basic feel for the game. Try to use stealth and non-lethal tactics as you prepare for the Big Boss emblem, and definitely consider defeating the Beauty and the Beast Corp bosses non-lethally to obtain the Solar Gun. For the sake of this road map, however, let’s assume that you only earn the unmissable trophies for now. Trophies Earned: (5/34) Liquid Sun Solid Sun Third Sun Twin Suns Old Sun Step Two: Preparing for Big Boss and Miscellaneous Emblems You now have to decide whether you want to try to obtain the Big Boss emblem or practice a bit more. If you aren’t ready, now is the time that you want to really ramp up your efforts and get familiar with the game. Your time won’t be wasted, however, since you will need five separate playthroughs to earn five different emblems: Centipede, Spider, Jaguar, Panther, and Leopard. Additionally, it is very important to obtain the Solar Gun to make your Big Boss run a lot easier. Consider earning some of the easier miscellaneous trophies along the way while you’re at it as well. Trophies Earned: (27/34) Laughing Octopus Doll Frog Soldier Doll Raging Raven Doll Crying Wolf Doll Screaming Mantis Doll SUNLIGHT! Are you an Otaku too? Can you feel my power now!!!? Crop Circle Divine Wind Drum Can Addict Emotion Control FaceCamo Addict Ghost Photography Addict Handle with Caution Hands Up! Hurt me more! I Just Don’t Fear Death LIQUID! Overhead view — just like old times. That Tune Is His Mind Control Music You’re pretty good. Emblems Earned: (5/40) Centipede Spider Jaguar Panther Leopard Step Three: Big Boss Emblem Now it’s time to tackle the most difficult challenge – the Big Boss emblem. While there isn’t a trophy directly related to this emblem, you need to unlock it along with the other 39 emblems to earn the Snake Eater song for Sounds of the Battlefield. The requirements for Big Boss are tough, but fortunately you can save as often as you’d like. This means that you can save after every checkpoint and reload if you die or raise an alert. By now you should be very familiar with the game, so it’s just a matter of putting it all together. Refer to the Big Boss emblem section of this guide for more info and tips. If you haven’t purchased them from Drebin’s store, you’ll obtain the stealth camo and bandana as a reward at the end. Trophies Earned: (29/34) Stealth Camouflage Infinite ammo. Emblems Earned: (15/40) Big Boss Fox Hound Fox Hound Mantis Wolf Raven Octopus Pigeon Scorpion Step Four: Chicken Emblem With Big Boss completed, it’s time to earn the Chicken emblem. With special items such as the stealth camo, bandana, and Patriot, you’ll be able to clean up any other trophies you have missed up until now and have some fun meeting the ridiculous requirements for Chicken. See the emblems guide for more details regarding your emblem runs. Also be sure to watch all of the flashbacks for Flashback Mania and find as many of the iPod songs as you can. You can’t earn Sounds of the Battlefield just yet, but you can collect the majority of them now to save time later. Trophies Earned: (31/34) Flashback Mania You enjoy all the killing, that’s why. Emblems Earned: (37/40) Chicken Puma Crocodile Pig Giant Panda Cow Hyena Hog Eagle Bear Gibbon Ant Rabbit Blue Bird Hawk Bee Scarab Frog Tortoise Gecko Inch Worm Lobster Step Five: Little Grey Emblem, Assassin Run, and Clean Up You’re almost there! If you’ve been following this guide, there are only three more emblems and trophies remaining each. Assassin and Tarantula have similar requirements, so go for both of those in a single run. You may have earned the Little Grey emblem at some point prior to this, but if not now is the time to focus on collecting the remaining weapons as well. It is also possible that you didn’t earn the five emblems that require five individual playthroughs before attempting Big Boss in Step Two; if that’s the case you’ll have to obtain those as well now. Once you earn all forty emblems you’ll score the Snake Eater iPod song, and if you’ve obtained all of the other iPod songs you’ll nab the Sounds of the Battlefield trophy. Assuming you’ve earned all of the other trophies as well, enjoy that sweet, sweet platinum trophy. You’ve certainly earned it. Trophies Earned: (34/34) I am THE expert on weapons Sounds of the Battlefield The Legendary Hero Emblems Earned: (40/40) Little Grey Assassin Tarantula 001.0 - Trophies Name: The Legendary Hero Rank: Platinum Description: Obtained all trophies. How It’s Earned: Like all platinum trophies, you earn this when all other trophies have been obtained. Name: Liquid Sun Rank: Bronze Description: Cleared Act 1 (Middle East). How It’s Earned: This is a story related trophy and will automatically unlock when you finish Act 1. Name: Solid Sun Rank: Bronze Description: Cleared Act 2 (South America). How It’s Earned: This is a story related trophy and will automatically unlock when you finish Act 2. Name: Third Sun Rank: Bronze Description: Cleared Act 3 (Eastern Europe). How It’s Earned: This is a story related trophy and will automatically unlock when you finish Act 3. Name: Twin Suns Rank: Bronze Description: Cleared Act 4 (Shadow Moses). How It’s Earned: This is a story related trophy and will automatically unlock when you finish Act 4. Name: Old Sun Rank: Bronze Description: Cleared Act 5 (Outer Haven). How It’s Earned: This is a story related trophy and will automatically unlock when you finish Act 5. Name: You enjoy all the killing, that's why. Rank: Bronze Description: Killed many enemies in one area, and vomited. How It’s Earned: If you kill 50 or more enemies in a single act, you will trigger a flashback of Liquid from Metal Gear Solid 1 telling Snake that he enjoys killing, which will cause Snake to throw up. A good point in the game to earn this is during one of the conflicts between PMCs and rebels in the first two acts. Specifically, Downtown in Act 1 or just outside Vista Mansion in Act 2 are two good places to camp out and rack up kills. Name: Laughing Octopus Doll Rank: Bronze Description: Defeated Laughing Octopus by non-lethal means, and obtained the Laughing Octopus Doll. How It’s Earned: Defeat Laughing Octopus’ Beast form using non-lethal tactics. Afterwards, the doll will be on one of the beds in the lab during the Beauty fight. Name: Frog Soldier Doll Rank: Bronze Description: Escaped the Haven Troopers in the Middle East by non-lethal means, and obtained the Frog Soldier Doll. How It’s Earned: Complete the Advent Palace portion of Act One using non- lethal methods. After several cinematics with Meryl and the Rat Patrol, the doll will be in the underground parking garage where the Rat Patrol parts with Snake. Name: Raging Raven Doll Rank: Bronze Description: Defeated Raging Raven by non-lethal means, and obtained the Raging Raven Doll. How It’s Earned: Defeat Raging Raven’s Beast form using non-lethal tactics. Afterward, the doll will be on the highest floor of the tower during the Beauty fight. Name: Crying Wolf Doll Rank: Bronze Description: Defeated Crying Wolf by non-lethal means, and obtained the Crying Wolf Doll. How It’s Earned: Defeat Crying Wolf’s Beast form using non-lethal tactics. Afterward, the doll will be against the wall behind where Snake begins during the Beauty fight. Name: Screaming Mantis Doll Rank: Bronze Description: Defeated Screaming Mantis by non-lethal means, and obtained the Screaming Mantis Doll. How It’s Earned: Defeat Screaming Mantis’ Beast form using non-lethal tactics. After hitting the Psycho Mantis doll with non-lethal rounds and picking it up, finish off Screaming Mantis and find the doll by the south exit of the area during the Beauty fight. ((Thanks to Nova666 for contributing to this section) Name: Divine Wind Rank: Silver Description: Caused a "divine wind" using the Tanegashima. How It’s Earned: At first glance, the Tanegashima doesn't look like much. Not only is it a mediocre weapon at best with an ungodly reload time, but it costs a whopping one million Drebin Points. However, when fired outside, the Tanegashima has a thirty-percent chance of immediately eliminating every enemy in the area by summoning a devastating tornado, or divine wind, which also causes them to drop any weapons and items they're carrying. Simply purchase the Tanegashima, preferably in Act 5 when you can take advantage of Drebin’s 50% war discount, and fire it somewhere outside. If you’re lucky, you’ll create the divine wind and earn the trophy. Name: Handle with Caution Rank: Bronze Description: Broke off the most important part of a statue. How It’s Earned: Early in Act 1, right before you meet Otacon, you will enter an area called the Red Zone. At the beginning of this area is a statue near some stairs. If you jump onto the statue’s base, you’ll have the option to blend in with it. Along with changing camouflage, Snake will grab the statue’s genitals while posing. Do this a few times, and eventually that part of the statue will break off. Name: Hands Up! Rank: Bronze Description: Held an enemy soldier at gunpoint and performed a body check. How It’s Earned: Sneak up behind an enemy, ideally your run-of-the-mill PMC and not a frog soldier, and point your gun at them. Snake will say “Freeze!” and the enemy will put their hands up in surrender. Now, an option will appear to perform a body check, so press Triangle and Snake will begin patting him down. When an exclamation mark appears, press Triangle again and you’ll receive an item. If, however, you press it while Snake is checking the enemy’s crotch, Snake will take a cheap shot and knock him out instead. Ouch. Name: Flashback Mania Rank: Gold Description: Viewed all flashbacks. How It’s Earned: While watching the cinematics, you will occasionally see the X button flash onscreen. If you press X, images, audio, or both from previous Metal Gear games will be spliced into the scene, serving as a flashback for Snake during his mission. You don’t have to watch all of these in a single playthrough, the trophy is cumulative as long as you start a new game using the same completed save file. The majority of these flashbacks occur during cutscenes, but some, such as the one for “You enjoy all the killing, that’s why.” are triggered during gameplay. A full list of these flashbacks will be provided shortly. Name: SUNLIGHT! Rank: Silver Description: Obtained the Solar Gun. How It’s Earned: Defeat the Beast forms of the Beauty and Beast Corp and complete the Advent Palace sequence with the Rat Patrol using non-lethal tactics. Afterwards, collect the dolls left in each area to earn the Solar Gun at the end of the game. Remember that even if you shoot a Haven Trooper with a tranquilizer gun while they're hanging from a ceiling, they'll fall to their death and count as a kill. For more information on the specific dolls, check out each individual doll-related trophy. Name: Sounds of the Battlefield Rank: Gold Description: Obtained all iPod® tracks (excluding tracks obtained via password). How It’s Earned: Like the description says, you must obtain all iPod tracks that can be found or earned in the game. Many of them are lying around and some are given to you by holding up enemies or giving health items to rebel allies, but the two toughest ones by far are the Big Boss and Snake Eater tracks, which require you to earn the Big Boss emblem and all forty emblems, respectively. There are 33 tracks that you need to obtain, a full list will be provided as soon as possible. Name: I Just Don't Fear Death Rank: Silver Description: Ended ALERT status while wearing the Corpse Camo. How It’s Earned: To obtain the Corpse Camo, you must finish a game with 51 or more continues. Afterward, while in an alert, if you equip the Corpse Camo and lay flat, enemies who discover you will think that Snake is dead and dismiss the alert. Name: I am THE expert on weapons Rank: Gold Description: Obtained all weapons (excluding weapons obtained via password). How It’s Earned: There are 69 weapons that you will need to obtain, many can be purchased from Drebin’s store or found in various areas throughout the game. Of those, only 65 are required for this trophy, since the other four can be obtained via password. Check the weapons section of this guide for more information regarding their locations. (Thanks to Nova666 for contributing to this section) Name: Infinite ammo. Rank: Gold Description: Obtained the Bandana. How It’s Earned: You can either earn the bandana by playing through the game without killing a single enemy, or you can purchase it from Drebin for five million Drebin Points. Name: Stealth Camouflage Rank: Gold Description: Obtained the Stealth Camouflage. How It’s Earned: You can obtain the stealth camo by either playing through the game without going into a single alert, or you can buy it from Drebin for five million Drebin Points. Name: Ghost Photography Addict Rank: Silver Description: Snapped at least 5 shots of ghosts on Shadow Moses Island. How It’s Earned: The ghosts are exclusively located in Act Four, and can be found in nearly every area you pass through. Before attempting to find the ghosts, you must at least have the Digital Camera to take photos - you can find it during the mission briefing sequences next to Sunny's desk. It's highly recommended that you also have the Sorrow Doll and some Chaff Grenades, though. Once you collect five photos, you will earn the trophy. For more information, check out the Ghosts of Shadow Moses section of this guide. Name: FaceCamo Addict Rank: Silver Description: Obtained 10 or more types of FaceCamo (excluding types obtained via password). How It’s Earned: There are more than ten FaceCamos in the game, but you only need ten. You will automatically earn three FaceCamos while playing the game naturally, so you will have to find the other seven. - Big Boss - Earn the Big Boss emblem (see the Emblems section for details). While wearing this camo, enemies that see you will become terrified or pass out. - Colonel Campbell - Stun Campbell with the MK.II during Act One's mission briefing. - Crying Beauty - Defeat Crying Beauty using non-lethal tactics. - Drebin - Acquire sixty weapons in one game. - Laughing Beauty - Defeat Laughing Beauty using non-lethal tactics. - Otacon - Stun Otacon with the MK.II during Act Three's mission briefing. - Raging Beauty - Defeat Raging Beauty using non-lethal tactics. - Raiden A - Stun Sunny with the MK.II during Act Three's mission briefing. - Raiden B - Stun Naomi with the MK.II during Act Three's mission briefing. - Screaming Beauty - Defeating Screaming Beauty using non-lethal tactics. Name: Can you feel my power now!!!? Rank: Silver Description: Took control of an enemy soldier's body using the Mantis Doll or Sorrow Doll. How It’s Earned: You obtain the Psycho Mantis and Sorrow dolls during the boss battle with Screaming Mantis. During the fight, shoot the dolls until Mantis drops them, and then run over and pick them up. The Mantis doll allows Snake to control living enemies, while the Sorrow doll grants you power over the dead. Simply equip a doll and use it like any other weapon on the appropriate enemy and the trophy is yours. Name: Emotion Control Rank: Bronze Description: Controlled an enemy soldier's emotions using an Emotive Magazine. How It’s Earned: The Emotion magazines can be purchased from Drebin’s shop for 2000 DP and are essentially identical to the Playboy magazines. Drop one on the ground, and when an enemy finds it you will earn the trophy. Keep in mind that this will not work during an alert phase. Name: Hurt me more! Rank: Bronze Description: Shocked an enemy soldier using MK.II/III. How It’s Earned: You obtain the MK.II early in Act 1 and can use it as an item from then one. When you take control of the MK.II, drive it up to an enemy, hold L1, and press R1 to attack. If it hits, the enemy will be knocked out and you’ll earn the trophy. Name: Drum Can Addict Rank: Bronze Description: Knocked an enemy soldier flying using a Drum Can. How It’s Earned: You obtain the Drum Can early in Act 1, and afterward you can hide and roll around in it. If you press X while hiding in the Drum Can, Snake will tip it over and start rolling. If you connect with an enemy you will earn the trophy, just keep in mind that if you roll for too long Snake will get dizzy and throw up. Name: Crop Circle Rank: Silver Description: Found a crop circle and heard a mysterious voice. How It’s Earned: After fighting Laughing Octopus in Act 2, you will have to track Naomi through the woods. In this section you will come across a river, follow it to the left until you find a crop circle near the riverbank. When you step on it, you will hear a flashback from Metal Gear Solid 2 and earn this trophy. Name: Are you an Otaku too? Rank: Silver Description: Viewed all model posters. How It’s Earned: There are four posters that you need to find, two in Act 2 and another two in Act 3. 1. On the first floor of Vista Mansion, look against the wall in the hallway near the staircase. Look for a painting of two nude figures on the wall, and shoot it. The painting will fall down and reveal a poster of Japanese model Akina Minami. 2. Still in Vista Mansion, head upstairs and lie prone on the bed. Press Triangle to roll over, and enter first person view to find the poster on the ceiling. 3. In Act 3, from where you begin in Midtown S Sector, follow the resistance member until you reach the park. Then head to the right until you reach a dead end, where you will find the poster. 4. In Midtown Central Sector, find a white van at a T-intersection where the helicopter is patrolling. Head up the street that’s on a slight incline and follow it up you reach another parked vehicle. Look at the wall near the vehicle for the fourth poster. For each poster, you have to look at the poster in first-person view and wait for Snake to say something like, “Akina!” Snake must say something to confirm that it has registered. Name: You’re pretty good. Rank: Silver Description: Got kissed by Ocelot during the final battle. How It’s Earned: During third phase of the final battle with Liquid Ocelot, when Ocelot begins using CQC and the Snake Eater theme is playing, one of his attacks involves putting Snake in a headlock that you have to wiggle out of. If you do nothing, however, Ocelot will say Snake’s name and give him a quick peck on the cheek. Name: That Tune Is His Mind Control Music Rank: Bronze Description: Played Oishii Two-han Seikatsu and made one of the BB Corps dance. How It’s Earned: During the Beauty forms of any of the B&B Corp boss fights, avoid fighting the Beauty for three minutes until the screen goes white and the environment disappears. You begin with Oishii Two-han Seikatsu in your iPod, so equip it and watch the Beauty dance. Name: Overhead view -- just like old times... Rank: Bronze Description: Used overhead view on Shadow Moses Island. How It’s Earned: Very simple, once you reach the helipad during Act 4 readjust the camera so that it’s pointing down over Snake, similar to the original camera angle from the earlier Metal Gear Solid games. Run around for a bit and Snake will say the line that the trophy is based on. If it doesn’t trigger, try tweaking the camera angle a little bit. Name: LIQUID! Rank: Bronze Description: Piloted Metal Gear REX and screamed at your enemy. How It’s Earned: Easy trophy. During the boss battle with Liquid’s RAY at the end of Act 4, press and hold Triangle to make REX roar while Snake screams out Liquid’s name. 002.0 – Weapons You will need to collect the 69 in-game weapons for the “I am THE expert on weapons” trophy as well as the Little Grey emblem as you work towards “Sounds of the Battlefield.” Below is a list of all 69 weapons and a brief description of how they can be obtained. 002.1 - Handguns - Mk2 - Otacon gives you this weapon in Act One when Snake meets up with the MK.II. - Operator - Otacon gives you this weapon in Act One when Snake meets up with the MK.II. - GSR - The GSR can be purchased from Drebin for 3000 DP or found in the Middle East Militia's safe house in Act One. Scarabs will also occasionally drop them. - Five-Seven - The Five-Seven is the alternate weapon for Haven Troopers, so if you force them to drop their weapon - either by holding them up or knocking them out - they'll resort to using their Five-Seven afterwards. You can also buy it from Drebin for 6000 Drebin Points. - PMM - Resistance members in Act Three carry them, but you'll have to alert them to your presence before they equip the PMM and attack you. The PMM can also buy purchased from Drebin for 3500 DP. - PSS - The PSS is a fairly common weapon, but the easiest way to find one is by destroying Scarabs. Many of them carry the PSS, so pick off a few in the tank hanger in Act Four, for example, and you'll score one easily. If that's not an option, the PSS is available at Drebin's shop for 5000 DP. - G18C - Some of the rebels in Act Two carry this weapon, so your best bet is to stick around in an area where rebels and PMCs continuously respawn and loot the corpses for a G18C. If grave robbing isn't you thing, Drebin will sell you one for 8000 Drebin Points. - Mk.23 - At the Shadow Moses helipad in Act Four, find the truck directly in front of the main entrance to the tank hanger. The Mk.23 is under the truck. - Race Gun - Complete the game once on any difficulty. - Type 17 - Earn the Hound Emblem (see the Emblem section for details). - Desert Eagle - Purchase this weapon from Drebin for 20000 Drebin Points. Scarabs can also drop one, but it’s less frequent than the GSR’s they usual carry. - Desert Eagle (Long Barrel) - Earn the Fox emblem (see the Emblems section for details). - Thor .45-70 - Earn the Fox Hound emblem (see the Emblems section for details). - Solar Gun - Defeat the Beast forms of the Beauty and Beast Corp and complete the Advent Palace sequence with the Rat Patrol using non-lethal tactics. Afterwards, collect the dolls left in each area to earn the Solar Gun. Remember that even if you shoot a Haven Trooper with a tranquilizer gun while they're hanging from a ceiling, they'll fall to their death and count as a kill. Check out each individual doll-related trophy for where the dolls themselves can be found. 002.2 - Submachine Guns - P90 - The P90 is the weapon of choice by Haven Troopers, so you can first pick one up in the Advent Palace while escaping with the Rat Patrol. - M10 - The rebels in Act Two carry this weapon, particularly the ones being held in the Cove Valley Village. Alternatively, you can purchase this from Drebin for 3000 Points. - MP7 - PMCs in Act One's Downtown carry this weapon. You can also find them in Drebin's shop for 3000 DP. - VZ.83 - Big Mama gives you the VZ before the motorcycle chase sequence in Act Three - Bizon - Obtain this weapon from Drebin for 7000 Drebin Points. - MP5SD2 - The MP5 can be purchased from Drebin for 15000 Drebin Points. - Patriot - Earn the Big Boss emblem (see the Emblems section for details). 002.3 - Rifles - AK102 - This is the standard weapon for PMCs in Act One, and you find one during the prologue sequence. - M4 Custom - Drebin gives you this weapon for free in Act One. - Mk.17 - A fairly common weapon in Act Three, the Mk.17 can also be found in the Militia Headquarters in Act One or purchased from Drebin's store for 3500 DP. - G3A3 - Some of the rebels in Act Two carry this weapon, and it can also be found in Drebin's shop with a 4000 DP price tag. - FAL Carbine - Score this weapon from Drebin for 4500 Points. - AN94 - In Act Two's Cove Valley Village, check some of the buildings to find the AN94. You can also buy it from Drebin for 5000 DP. - XM8 - In the Power Plant area of Act Two, explore the west side of the plant to find the XM8. - Tanegashima - This weapon is only available in Drebin's shop for a staggering one million Drebin Points. I suggest buying it in Act Five when Drebin cuts his prices by 50%. 002.4 - Machine Guns - HK21E – In the rebel hideout in Act 1, knock out the rebel talking about a gun launderer to find this weapon. Alternatively, purchase this weapon from Drebin's store for 6000 DP. (Thanks to Arcadia Evander for contributing to this section) - M60E4 - PMCs in Act Two carry this weapon, or it can be bought from Drebin for 10000 Drebin Points. - PKM - Rebel soldiers carry the PKM in the Vista Mansion area. - MK.46 Mod 1 - The weapon can be found in Drebin's store for 9000 DP. 002.5 - Shotguns - Twin Barrel - The Twin Barrel is located in the locked building in the southern part of Cove Valley Village, in Act Two. If Snake gets into a firefight with the PMCs holding the rebels hostage, the PMC inside will come out, and later on the surviving rebels will head inside and explore the building. This is the same building that contains the South American rebel costume. - M870 Custom - In the Northwest corner of the Confinement Facility in Act Two is a small shed that contains the M870. It's also found in Drebin's shop sporting a 30000 DP price tag. - Saiga-12 - Snake can buy this weapon from Drebin for 40000 DP. 002.6 - Sniper Rifles - M14EBR - Many PMC snipers use the M14, so you can find them around Downtown in Act One. You can also buy it from Drebin for 9000 DP. - DSR-1 – You automatically earn this weapon after completing Act 2. (Thanks to Arcadia Evander for contributing to this section) - SVD - Besides being a weapon carried by some PMC snipers, you can find the SVD in Cove Valley Village in Act Two. You can also buy the SVD from Drebin for 18000 Drebin Points. - VSS - In Act Two, take the west path from the Power Plant to reach a part of the Confinement Facility that isn't in the midst of a skirmish between the rebels and PMCs - but does have several rebel POWs. You'll find the VSS in a large building with a partially destroyed floor. - Mosin Nagant - Purchase this weapon from Drebin for 60000 DP. 002.7 - The BFG's - M82A2 - You can buy this weapon from Drebin for 200000 Points. - Rail Gun - Snake automatically gains this weapon after defeating Crying Wolf. - XM25 - Purchase this weapon from Drebin for 80000 Drebin Points. It's also occasionally dropped by Haven Troopers. - MGL-140 - Snake automatically gains this weapon after defeating Raging Raven in Act Three. - RPG-7 - In Act One's Red Zone, you'll find two RPG's - one in a building northwest of where Snake meets the MK.II, and another in a small inlet right next to the entrance to the rebel's safe house. You can also find numerous other RPG's in the safe house itself. - M72A3 - In the Marketplace in Act Two, find a small inlet on the left side of the main street behind the first few stalls. You can also purchase this weapon from Drebin for 40000 Points. - Javelin - After meeting Drebin behind the Power Station in Act Two, take the southern of the two paths in the northwest corner. Near a small overhang in the corner is a Javelin along with some other weapons and items. If you don't mind the steep price, Drebin will sell you one for 150000 DP. - FIM-92A - In Act Four, jump into the back of the truck in the Nuclear Disposal Facility in Shadow Moses to find a FIM. There's also another one located in the northwest corner of the inner compound of the Power Plant in Act Two - you'll need to turn off the current and use the power lines to cross over the wall, though. Otherwise, Drebin's got them in stock for 100000 Drebin Points each. 002.8 - Explosives - Grenade - Many soldiers carry standard grenades - just hold up and search a few and you're bound to find one eventually. - Petro Bomb - The rebels in Act One use these the most, and you can find some directly across the street from where you begin Act One, in a narrow alley to the north. Drebin also has them in stock for 100 Drebin Points. - White Phosphorus Grenade - While escaping from the Advent Palace with the Rat Patrol in Act One, a box of WP grenades can be found on the staircase behind the bar leading down to the first floor. WP grenades are pretty common, however, so you can find them in a myriad of other locations throughout the game. Drebin also sells them for 110 Drebin Points per box. - Stun Grenade - As with the other grenades, stun grenades are scattered throughout the five acts, but specifically can be found in the second floor of the Advent Palace in Act One, just behind a claymore mine in a dead end. - Chaff Grenade - On the Shadow Moses helipad in Act Four. - Smoke Grenade - Smoke grenades are extremely common, so you can find them just about anywhere. Specifically, check out the second floor stairs in the Advent Palace in Act One to find some. Drebin will also sell them for 100 DP. - Smoke Grenade (Yellow) - Purchase them from Drebin for 100 Drebin Points after completing the game once. - Smoke Grenade (Red) - Purchase them from Drebin for 100 Drebin Points after completing the game once. - Smoke Grenade (Blue) - Purchase them from Drebin for 100 Drebin Points after completing the game once. - Smoke Grenade (Green) - Purchase them from Drebin for 100 Drebin Points after completing the game once. - Claymore Mine - Several claymores are planted around the Advent Palace in Act One, but you'll have to crawl over them or use the MK.II to disarm them before collecting one. - Sleeping Gas Mine - Several are planted as traps around the Advent Palace in Act One, but you'll have to crawl over them or use the MK.II to disarm them before collecting one. - C4 - Enter the Power Plant's inner compound in Act Two. Look under some computers in the first room to find a box of C4 lying on the floor. Drebin will also sell C4 for 400 DP. - Sleeping Gas Satchel - Drebin sells Satchels in his shop for 400 DP. 002.9 - Miscellaneous - Stun Knife - Snake begins the game with this weapon. - Magazine - Any time Snake picks up a weapon with extra ammo in it. - Playboy - Playboys are quite popular among the PMCs, but you can find one lying on a couch on the first floor of the Advent Palace in Act One. - Emotion Magazine - Drebin sells this item for 2000 Points. - Psycho Mantis Doll - Shoot the Psycho Mantis doll hanging from a string on Screaming Mantis' right side until it drops to the ground. You have to do this anyway to defeat the boss. - The Sorrow Doll - Shoot the Sorrow doll hanging from the string on Screaming Mantis' left side until it drops to the ground. Unlike the Psycho Mantis doll, this is an optional item that you do not need to use against the boss. I recommend obtaining this doll early before attacking the Mantis doll, since Screaming Mantis will attack you more aggressively as her Psycho Mantis doll takes damage. 003.0 - Emblems Emblems are the rankings - or code names, as it's been known in previous games - that you're awarded after completing the game. You earn different rankings by fulfilling certain requirements, which occasionally reap rewards. There are forty emblems in the game, and unlike in previous titles you can earn multiple emblems in a single play-through. While there isn’t a trophy specifically related to any emblem, you’ll need to earn all 40 for the Snake Eater iPod song and eventually the Sounds of the Battlefield trophy. 003.1 - The Emblems - Big Boss - How It's Earned - This is the most difficult emblem to earn, as there are several difficult requirements to fulfill. Complete the game under the following requirements: - Difficulty: The Boss Extreme - Continues: Zero, so no dying and no failing missions. - Alerts: Zero, though cautions are fine. - Healing Items Used: Zero, including non-ration items like noodles. - Kills: Zero, including all bosses. - Completion Time: Under five hours. - Special Items Used: None. What It Unlocks - After all of that work, earning the Big Boss ranking scores you the Patriot machine gun, the Big Boss face camo, and the Big Boss iPod song. - Fox Hound - How It's Earned - This is the second most difficult emblem to earn, as it's nearly identical to the Big Boss with a few exceptions. Complete the game under the following requirements: - Difficulty: Big Boss Hard or higher. - Continues: Zero, so no dying and no failing missions. - Alerts: Under three. - Healing Items Used: Zero, including non-ration items like noodles. - Kills: Zero, including all bosses. - Completion Time: Under five hours and thirty minutes. - Special Items Used: What It Unlocks - For your efforts, you receive the Thor .45-70 pistol, which is pretty much a shotgun that's the size of a pistol. It holds only a single bullet, but that's about all you're going to need. - Fox - How It's Earned - I suppose this would be the third most difficult emblem to earn then, wouldn't it? Fox is about the same as before, but with more relaxed requirements. - Difficulty: Solid Normal or higher. - Continues: Zero, so no dying and no failing missions. - Alerts: Five or fewer. - Healing Items Used: Zero, including non-ration items like noodles. - Kills: Zero, including all bosses. - Completion Time: Under six hours. - Special Items Used: None. What It Unlocks - Getting the Fox ranking earns you the long-barreled Desert Eagle, which has a long-range scope to attack from a distance. Not bad. - Hound - How It's Earned - Same as the others, this is nothing more than a watered- down Big Boss run. Complete the game under the following requirements: - Difficulty: Naked Normal or higher. - Continues: Zero, so no dying and no failing missions. - Alerts: Under three. - Healing Items Used: Zero, including non-ration items like noodles. - Kills: Zero, including all bosses. - Completion Time: Under six hours and thirty minutes. - Special Items Used: None. What It Unlocks - For your efforts you get the Type 17 pistol, which has fully automatic and semi-automatic options like a machine gun. - Mantis - How It's Earned - Complete the game under the following requirements: - Continues: Zero - Alerts: Zero - Healing Items Used: Zero, including non-ration items like noodles. - Completion Time: Under five hours. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Wolf - How It's Earned - Complete the game without using any healing items like rations, noodles, or Regain. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Raven - How It's Earned - Finish the game in less than five hours. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Octopus - How It's Earned - Play through the game without setting off a single alert phase. What It Unlocks - Stealth Camouflage - Bear - How It's Earned - Eliminate one hundred enemies using CQC chokeholds. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Eagle - How It's Earned - Register 150 or more headshots. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Assassin - How It's Earned - This one's interesting: you need to stun or kill more than fifty enemies with the knife, have more than fifty CQC chokeholds, and have fewer than 25 alerts. What It Unlocks - The Altair disguise as seen in the April Fools trailer. I don't think Kojima quite understands the concept of April Fools... Or maybe he does all too well. - Pigeon - How It's Earned - Finish the game with zero kills, including bosses. What It Unlocks - The Bandana, which gives the wearer infinite ammo. - Blue Bird - How It's Earned - Give fifty healing items to the rebel soldiers in Acts One and Two. To do this, equip a healing item and press Triangle while standing in front of a soldier. As a bonus, sometimes they'll give you something in exchange. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Hawk - How It's Earned - Be praised by rebel soldiers more than twenty-five times. This will only happen if you kill a PMC near a rebel, so stand near some rebels and pick off PMCs during one of the many gunfights you'll stumble across. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Little Gray - How It's Earned - Obtain all sixty-nine weapons in the game. Unfortunately, this includes the Patriot, which you can only get your hands on by earning the Big Boss emblem. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Ant - How It's Earned - Hold up fifty soldiers and search them for items. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Gibbon - How It's Earned - Simply hold up fifty soldiers. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Tortoise - How It's Earned - Spend an hour or longer sitting in a cardboard box or oil drum. Your best bet is to find a safe place to hide, equip the box, and switch the TV to something and kill your hour that way. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Rabbit - How It's Earned - Flip through one hundred or more pages in a Playboy magazine. You pervert. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Bee - How It's Earned - Inject fifty soldiers with the syringes, or scan them with the scanning plug. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Gecko - How It's Earned - Spend at least one hour hugging the walls. Only the wall hugs where you must press Triangle first count. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Scarab - How It's Earned - Perform one hundred sideways rolls. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Frog - How It's Earned - Dodge or forward roll two hundred times. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Inch Worm - How It's Earned - Crawl on the ground for at least one hour. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Lobster - How It's Earned - Remain crouched for at least two hours and thirty minutes in the game. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Hyena - How It's Earned - Collect four hundred weapons or items from dead soldiers. What It Unlocks - Nothing, but you should be doing this anyway for the ammo and Drebin Points. - Hog - How It's Earned - Enter ten or more combat highs. Combat highs occur when you fire one hundred or more rounds during an alert. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Pig - How It's Earned - Use forty or more rations or other healing items. This is actually more difficult than it sounds, but you can just leave your PS3 on overnight or something. What It Unlocks - Nothing - Scorpion - How It's Earned - Complete the game under the following requirements: - Continues: Twenty-five or fewer. - Alerts: Seventy-five or fewer. - Kills: Two hundred and fifty or fewer. What It Unlocks - The Corpse Camo, and the satisfaction in knowing that you managed to play the absolute worst game of Metal Gear Solid 4 imaginable. 003.2 - Emblems Runs At first, getting all forty emblems might seem like a real pain. After all, playing through the game forty times sounds like it would become more like work than fun. However, you can earn multiple emblems in Guns of the Patriots, so you actually can kill several birds with one stone if you play your cards right and plan ahead. This section will outline how to get all the emblems in the fewest number of games. 003.21 - The Big Boss Run This is the run where you get all of the difficult emblems, the ones that require you to limit your alerts, play time, et cetera. Fortunately, none of the emblems have a save requirement, so you can save after every checkpoint if you'd like. What Emblems You'll Get: - Big Boss - This is the emblem you're shooting for. - Fox Hound - A watered down Big Boss emblem. - Fox - Another watered down Big Boss emblem. - Hound - A third watered down version of the Big Boss emblem. - Mantis - Contains four of the seven requirements for Big Boss. - Wolf - Requires no healing items, a requirement for Big Boss. - Raven - A completion time of five hours is also a requirement for Big Boss. - Octopus - Zero alert phases is a requirement for the Big Boss emblem. - Pigeon - Zero kills is a requirement for Big Boss. - Scorpion - Has requirements that will all be fulfilled in a Big Boss run. 003.22 - The Chicken Run Now it's time for the complete opposite. Earning the Big Boss emblem requires you to play the best game of Metal Gear Solid 4 possible, and the Chicken emblem requires you to play the worst. The key here is that you must complete the game in over thirty-five hours, which gives you plenty of time to fulfill the requirements for many of the remaining emblems because, quite frankly, there isn't a whole lot else to do for thirty-five hours. Also, if you do this emblem after your Big Boss run, you'll be able to use items like the Stealth Camo and Bandana to allow you to quickly get to where you need to be to earn another emblem. What Emblems You'll Get: - Chicken - Like Big Boss, it's the emblem you're working towards. - Puma - Contains requirements that are going to be far surpassed by Chicken. - Crocodile - Requires four hundred kills to Chicken's five hundred. - Pig - Requires forty healing items used to Chicken's fifty. - Giant Panda - Chicken's game time requirement is five hours longer than this one. Personally, I'd recommend leaving your game on overnight or something. - Cow - This emblem requires you to have more than one hundred alerts, which you will easily exceed with Chicken’s requirement of 150. - Hyena - Since you have to kill five hundred people, it shouldn't be too difficult to collect four hundred weapons or items. In fact, if you hang around in Acts One and Two where PMCs and rebels continuously respawn, you should easily be able to collect four hundred weapons. - Hog - Combat highs occur when you fire one hundred or more rounds during an alert phase. Since you want to kill as many people as possible, want to enter as many alerts as possible, and may have the Patriot and/or Bandana, this shouldn't be too difficult. - Eagle - Again, you're aiming to kill five hundred people and you shouldn't be worried about dying, so take your time and aim for headshots. You can also hold soldiers up for the Gibbon emblem and execute them with headshots. - Bear - If you have the stealth camouflage from a Big Boss run, you can easily sneak up to an enemy and put them in a CQC hold. - Gibbon - Holding up fifty soldiers is easy if you have the Stealth Camo. - Ant - Searching fifty soldiers is easy and time consuming, the perfect combination when trying to get the Chicken emblem. - Rabbit - Same as Ant, continuously flipping through the porno magazine takes time, which you have plenty of. - Blue Bird - Since you're going to be hanging around the rebels and are actively trying to die anyway, take the time to give them any healing items you may have. As a bonus, when you’re low on health the rebels may actually give you items like noodles that you can give right back to them. You can use health items on yourself in Acts Three through Five when you don't need them to earn this emblem. - Hawk - Again, since you should be engaged in combat with the PMCs, as long as you're near a rebel you're bound to be praised by them. I personally like to stay just outside of Vista Mansion in Act Two before the bulldozer destroys the gate and use the VSS to pick off PMCs as they show up. You'll hear the rebels praise you when they shout out, "Oh yeah!", "That's how you do it!", or "Nice shot!" among other phrases. - Bee - My advice is to pick a soldier that's alone while tracking Naomi in Act Two and just inject them fifty times. Easy emblem to earn. - Scarab - To roll, lay on the ground and press X while pointing the right analog stick to the left or right. Find a quiet, open area and just roll around for a while. - Frog - Similar to Scarab, just stand around dodging back and forth. If you want, stand in front of a Stryker while it's shooting at you or something. - Tortoise - It's boring to hide in a box for an hour, so equip it and go find something else to do. - Gecko - This emblem is equally as boring, but you can kill two birds with one stone by crouching while hugging the wall. Once again, read a magazine or take an hour-long walk while this is going on. - Inch Worm - Same as the previous two, just lie prone and wait for the hour to pass by. - Lobster - This emblem seems a bit more annoying since it requires you to remain crouched for two and a half hours, but you can earn this emblem while getting a few others. Remember, you're crouched while under a cardboard box, and you can crouch while hugging a wall as well. 003.23 - The Assassin Run The Assassin run won't earn you as many emblems as the previous two, but you can still earn multiple emblems in one run. What Emblems You'll Get: - Assassin - This run should be designed to get this emblem. - Tarantula - This emblem isn't really a perfect fit with Assassin, but the minimal alerts and high number of kills is good enough to link the two. 003.24 - Miscellaneous Big Boss, Assassin, and Chicken combined can earn you thirty-four of the forty emblems, but that still leaves another six to complete. Unfortunately, five of the six all have separate requirements, so you will have to play through five individual games to get them. The final emblem, Little Gray, is a bit of a black sheep, since you need to pick up all sixty-nine weapons in the game - not including the 1911 Custom - to earn it. You'll probably end up scoring this emblem eventually during one of the other runs. If you need help finding a specific weapon, check the Weapons section in this guide for a specific location. 004.0 - The Ghosts of Shadow Moses In the original Metal Gear Solid, the player could use the digital camera to find ghostly images of the developers throughout the game. These ghosts couldn't be seen by the naked eye, but they would show up in the photo album after taking a picture of them. A similar Easter Egg is included in Guns of the Patriots, and now you can use the camera to find thirty images of both the developers and a few familiar characters from the original Metal Gear Solid. These ghosts are exclusively located in Act Four, and can be found in nearly every area you pass through. If you collect five photos, you will earn the trophy Ghost Photography Addict. Before attempting to find the ghosts, you must at least have the Digital Camera to take photos - you can find it during the mission briefing sequences next to Sunny's desk. It's highly recommended that you also have the Sorrow Doll and some Chaff Grenades, though. The Sorrow Doll, when equipped along with the camera, allows the player to see any ghosts before taking a picture, and Chaff Grenades will allow you to search areas infested with Scarabs for ghosts without having to worry about being seen. 004.1 - Heliport - Nishimura - Description: The profile of a man wearing glasses. Where It's Found: Stand on the far side of the actual helipad and look towards the facility - the ghost is just above the box of chaff grenades in the middle of the helipad. - Shigeno - Description: The man with hair covering his left eye. Where It's Found: East of the main entrance is a surveillance camera and a staircase leading up to the catwalk above. Stand on the snow or the staircase and focus the lens under the surveillance camera to find the ghost. - Genome Soldier I - Description: The full body of a genome soldier dressed in a heavy white outfit to stay warm outside in a blizzard. Where It's Found: There are several munitions warehouses on the west side of the heliport. Head inside the southern-most warehouse and look between the two crates against the south wall - the soldier will be hovering inside there. - Muraoka - Description: A nondescript man's face staring straight ahead. Where It's Found: From the south side of the helipad, walk towards the elevator so that you're as close as possible but can still see over the fence. Look towards the top left corner of the elevator near the steel beams to find the ghost. Muraoka is one of the toughest ghosts to photograph because the ghost's gray complexion blends in with the snowstorm swirling around behind it. Use the elevator as a background and wait for the wind to die to down to get a clear shot. - Tanaka - Description: A somewhat chubby man's face staring straight ahead. Where It's Found: Stand on the helipad and face the northwest corner, where the second surveillance camera and the first floor ventilation shaft are. The ghost can be found just under the camera. 004.2 - Tank Hanger and Canyon - Master Miller - Description: The face of Master Miller. Where It's Found: Crawl through the ventilation shaft on the first floor - the one where Tanaka's ghost can be found - and look where the two vents intersect just inside the facility. - Genome Soldier II - Description: A regular genome soldier, dressed in the plain olive drab and talking into a radio. Where It's Found: Enter the tank hanger and face the northwest side of the tank parked inside. You probably want to toss a chaff grenade here to temporarily knock out the Scarabs. - Decoy Octopus - Description: Decoy Octopus' real face, not disguised as the DARPA Chief. Where It's Found: Stand in front of the elevator on the first floor and look up in the top left corner to find him. As with the previous ghost, make sure the Scarabs are indisposed or take the photo before they spot you. - The DARPA Chief - Description: The face of the DARPA Chief. Where It's Found: Crouch down and walk under the partially open door that leads to the canyon, and then face the southeast corner to find the Chief's face hovering near the ceiling. The ghost is located near the first door that connects the tank hanger to the corridor with the Scarabs on the ceiling, not the one that connects the corridor with the canyon itself. - Kobayashi - Description: A man that's in the middle of screaming. Where It's Found: As you enter the canyon, look to the west to find two large rocks in the ground. Stand just north of here and aim the camera at the rock closest to you - if you use the rock as a backdrop you should be able to spot the ghost. - Vulcan Raven - Description: The grinning face of Vulcan Raven. Where It's Found: Stand near the entrance to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building and hug the west wall. Now slowly walk southwest with the camera equipped until you see Vulcan Raven's face where the rock wall juts out. - Korekado - Description: A man with a thin beard and extremely bright eyes staring straight ahead. Where It's Found: Stand near the entrance to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building and look towards the east. There are some pipes that you can crawl under and a large tank, and the ghost is hanging around just above the pipes. Face the rock wall to see him better. 004.3 - Nuclear Warhead Storage Building 004.31 - Nuclear Warhead Storage Building: First Floor - Makimura - Description: A man that looks like he's just been surprised by something, with his mouth wide open and eyes like saucers. Where It's Found: After crawling under the first door, there's a narrow catwalk on the west side of the first room. At the very end is a window that looks into the room with all of the warheads - the ghost is sitting in front of the window. If you can't see him, back up a little. - Genome Soldier III - Description: A genome soldier dressed wearing a HAZMAT suit and a gasmask. Where It's Found: In the southwest corner of the main room are two nuclear missiles next to the staircase. Stand at the base of the stairs and look at the tip of the nearest warhead to spot the ghost. 004.32 - Nuclear Warhead Storage Building: Second Floor - Matsuhana - Description: A man that's screaming, with his hands on his face in a "Home Alone" way. Where It's Found: The hallway just before Otacon's office where Grey Fox killed a handful of soldiers is shaped like the letter "L". The ghost is located in the inner corner of the "L" and can be seen from both sides. - Kenneth Baker, ArmsTech President - Description: The face of Kenneth Baker. Where It's Found: In Otacon's office, look at the super computers against the wall near the locker where Otacon was hiding in the original game. Baker's face can clearly be seen against the wall. - Hideo Kojima - Description: The face of the man himself, Hideo Kojima. Where It's Found: In Otacon's office, look against the wall where Snake inputs the password to find a Policenauts poster. Hideo's face can be found near the top left corner of this poster. - Takabe - Description: A bearded man's face staring straight ahead, though the face is tilted slightly to the left. Where It's Found: In Otacon's office, stand in between the two cubicles and face the one farthest from the Policenauts poster - and therefore nearest the exit. Takabe's face is in front of the computer on the desk. - Shimizu - Description: A girl with hair partially covering her face. Where It's Found: Leave Otacon's office and destroy the Gekko that crashes through the ceiling. Stand underneath the hole that was created and take a photo of the ghost. 004.4 - Snowfield and Communications Tower Note: The ghosts in the snowfield can be found during or after the fight with Crying Wolf. It's much easier to find them afterwards since you don't have to worry about being attacked, so it's recommended to finish her off first. - Sniper Wolf - Description: The face of Sniper Wolf. Where It's Found: After defeating Crying Beauty, you're supposed to enter the munitions warehouse you're standing in front of to continue down to the Casting Facility. Instead, look to the munitions warehouse east of the one you can enter and look near the top of the doorway. - Sato - Description: A man covering the lower half of his face with his hands. Where It's Found: Head east from the exit that leads to the Casting Facility until you find the wreckage of the Hind D. Stand south of the wreck and focus on the cockpit to see the ghost. - Shinkawa - Description: A nondescript man looking slightly to the right. Where It's Found: Stand near the collection of storage containers near the southwest corner of the southern communications tower. Focus the camera above the area that juts out and has a ladder attached to the north side of it. - Nakamura - Description: A man with a beard standing in between two cartoon characters reminiscent of the Three Stooges. Where It's Found: From the southern communications tower, jump down into the area where Snake and Meryl first encountered Sniper Wolf and follow that to the end where the mines were. Stand back and look up by the railings to find the ghosts. 004.5 - Casting Facility 004.51 - Casting Facility South - Hirano - Description: A bald man sucking on his thumb. Where It's Found: Near the north side of this area is an old furnace that's partially collapsed. Stand to the south of the furnace and look between the two towers. 007.52 - Casting Facility North - Sasaki - Description: A bald man with a very thick moustache. Where It's Found: Climb onto the conveyor belt and crawl north until you reach an area that you can only crawl under. Be about twenty feet south of the obstruction and look on the right side to see the ghost. Make sure to lie prone to avoid being spotted by the patrolling Gekko or any of the Scarabs. 004.6 - Underground Base - Kaneda - Description: The head and upper body of a woman with both arms raised, showing her palms. Where It's Found: In the first hallway of the base, you have to run down some stairs and crawl through a grate to reach the main area from the original game. At the bottom of the stairs, turn around and look back up. - Negishi - Description: A frowning man looking up and to the left. Where It's Found: Crawl through the broken grate to reach a familiar area from the original Metal Gear Solid that's filled with ravens and Scarabs. Destroy the two Scarabs and stand on the catwalk that connects the two sides. Now look over the edge towards the sewer and focus the camera on the spot where the water falls over the side to find the ghost. 004.7 - Underground Supply Tunnel Note: The final three ghosts can only be photographed during the boss fight with Vamp. This can be pretty annoying because while you're trying to zoom in on a ghost, Vamp will run and knock you down. Your best bet is to "kill" him and use the few seconds of free time to snap the photo. - Kimura - Description: The upper body of a woman with one arm raised. Where It's Found: Stand in the far corner behind Rex to view the back right side of its head. Hug the wall and look up to find this ghost. This is one of the most difficult ghosts to photograph because it may take some searching to pinpoint, so keep an eye on where Vamp is to avoid taking damage. - Grey Fox, Frank Jaeger - Description: The profile of Grey Fox wearing his cybernetic helmet. Where It's Found: Stand in front of Rex and look under its right foot, where Fox sacrificed himself to save Snake. - Liquid Snake - Description: The face of Liquid Snake. Where It's Found: Look up from where you begin the Vamp fight and focus on the camera lens on Rex's cockpit. 005.0 – Flashbacks During the game, you will occasionally see an (X) icon flash on screen. If you press X, you’ll see a flashback from a previous Metal Gear game. The majority of these flashbacks appear during cutscenes, but some are triggered during gameplay as well. There are 66 moments where you have to trigger a flashback, but that number is not related to the “Flashbacks Viewed” figure you see at the end of each act. That number just shows how many times you’ve pressed X during the flashbacks. 005.1 – Prologue 1. At the end of the opening cinematic, when Snake is saluting in front of the grave. 2. The next flashback occurs in the same scene when Snake mentions FOXDIE. 3. The third flashback can be obtained when Otacon brings up Naomi, almost immediately after the previous one. 4. The last flashback in the prologue occurs when Otacon says that they have located Liquid Ocelot. 005.2 – Act 1 1. When you rendezvous with Otacon and the MK.II. 2. After Snake is held up at gunpoint by Johnny and calls him a rookie for having the safety on. 3. In the same cinematic, when Meryl is introduced. 4. Near the end of this cutscene, when Johnny’s stomach problems flare up. 5. At the end of Act 1 when Snake finds Ocelot. 6. After the soldiers start getting sick, when Snake sees Naomi. 005.31 – Act 2: Mission Briefing 1. This flashback occurs when Otacon mentions that the Rat Patrol team survived Liquid’s attack at the end of Act 1. 2. Just before Snake mentions Naomi and Otacon brings up the message he received from her. 3. During Naomi’s video. 4. When Otacon is talking about how Naomi used radar data from Shadow Moses to prove that the message is legitimate. 5. Around the same time as the previous flashback, when Otacon mentions Mei Ling. 005.32 – Act 2 1. When Snake mentions Solidus during the opening cinematic. 2. Still in the opening cutscene, but this time when Vamp appears for the first time. 3. After meeting Drebin, you will be prompted to see a flashback as he recites the names of the Beauty and the Beast Corp. 4. Soon after the previous flashback, when Snake mentions the FOXHOUND members who share codenames with the B&B Corp. 5. In the same cinematic, when Drebin talks about keeping “this whole mess” in check. 6. After meeting Naomi and she mentions Shadow Moses. 7. After the game prompts you to save, when Snake is talking about FOXDIE. 8. When Naomi tells you about a new strain of FOXDIE. 9. Once you leave Naomi’s lab, Snake will begin examining the footprints with a knife. 10. While following the trail to find Naomi, you will reach a river. Go downstream until you find a small patch of grass that has been flattened down into a crop circle and you will hear Roy Campbell’s alien abduction story from Metal Gear Solid 2. This is the same location where you earn the Crop Circle trophy. 11. Near the end of the act when you enter the marketplace, Drebin will notice how Snake and Naomi are holding the monkey’s hands. 12. When Raiden appears and defeats several Gekkos, he will sheath his sword and the flashback prompt will appear. 005.41 – Act 3: Mission Briefing 1. Naomi will comment on the photo of Olga in Sunny’s kitchen, and later Sunny says, “Her name was Olga.” 2. Snake and Otacon are talking about how Liquid and Snake don’t have the same DNA as Big Boss, and Snake will say, “So that’s what Liquid was talking about!” 3. Right when Naomi says that Liquid has left for Europe to find Big Boss’ corpse. 4. The next flashback will occur when Naomi is looking over Raiden’s body. 5. The final flashback appears when Naomi comments about Otacon’s photo of his sister, Emma. 005.42 – Act 3 1. After Big Mama destroys a Scarab. 2. Before exiting the church, when Big Mama says, “Nowadays, anyone with a computer can get combat training.” 3. After the motorcycle sequence, when Big Mama reveals that she was impaled by a metal spike during the crash. 4. When Big Mama tells Snake to promise that he’ll return. 5. After the fight with Raging Raven, Big Mama will glance back at her crashed motorcycle. 005.51 – Act 4 Mission Briefing 1. When Otacon and Snake are talking about the Patriot AIs while Sunny is walking down the stairs. 2. When Snake and Otacon are talking to Campbell and Snake says, “What’s his plan?” 005.52 – Act 4 Audio Flashbacks There are several audio flashbacks in this act. They may not be required for the trophy, but either way you earn 1000 Drebin Points for listening to them. 1. When you walk onto the helipad, where the Chaff grenades are. 2. In the little warehouse before entering Shadow Moses, Snake will comment about the surveillance camera. 3. In front of the elevator by the helipad. 4. Under the truck in the helipad is an Mk.23, the SOCOM from the original Metal Gear Solid. When you equip and aim it, Snake will say, “Just like old times...” 5. Angle the camera so that it’s looking down on Snake, and he’ll comment about using overhead view. This is also required for the “Overhead view – just like old times...” trophy. 6. Enter Shadow Moses from the second floor ventilation shaft. 7. Between the tank and the cargo door that leads outside to the canyon where Snake fought Vulcan Raven. 8. As you enter the canyon, Snake will hear Grey Fox’s introduction. 9. When you run down the hallway towards Otacon’s office. 10. After the cinematics in Otacon’s office, check out the lockers. 11. After defeating Crying Wolf, run up the south communications tower and run around the second floor catwalk. 12. After defeating Crying Wolf, find the crashed wreck of the Hind D behind the towers to hear this flashback. 13. After defeating Crying Wolf, run down the trench leading up to the communications tower. 14. After defeating Crying Wolf, near the northern tower by a wolf wandering around. 15. Enter the underground base and crawl through the open grate. Otacon will say, “Finally, it’s just up ahead.” Wait for him to finish and stand near the locked door behind you. 005.53 – Act 4 1. After inputting the password in Otacon’s office, Snake will look around and reminisce about meeting Otacon for the first time. 2. In the same cinematic, when Otacon reminds Snake that Naomi stole his blood. 3. When Otacon claims that Vamp and Naomi are likely heading towards the underground hangar where REX should be. 4. Shortly after, when Snake talks about the good ol’ days when doors required keycards. 5. After defeating Crying Beauty, Otacon will say, “Welcome home... Wolf.” 6. As soon as you enter the underground hangar, Snake will look up and mimic the same scene from the original Metal Gear Solid. 7. After defeating Vamp, when Otacon says, “Why does it always end this way?” 8. After defeating Liquid’s RAY, Raiden will appear to help Snake. There are a few hidden flashbacks here, so the usual (X) icon won’t appear to alert you when to press X. Basically, from the moment Raiden screams out Rose’s name and the screen turns black, continue to press X until the cinematic finishes. 005.61 – Act 5 Mission Briefing 1. When Otacon is talking about how Naomi was determined to stop Liquid. 2. When Otacon tells Snake that Naomi gave Sunny a program that she was working on that could destroy the Patriot AIs. 3. When Otacon claims that the program Sunny and Naomi developed is even better than Emma’s from Metal Gear Solid 2. 005.62 – Act 5 1. When Screaming Mantis appears and the ghostly figure of Psycho Mantis appears behind her. 2. After defeating Screaming Mantis, Psycho Mantis will ask about your saved data, referencing the boss battle from Metal Gear Solid 1. 3. In the same scene, Mantis will also attempt to move your controller with his psychokinetic powers. If you have an older PS3 controller, Mantis will get upset that there’s no vibration feature either. If you have a newer DualShock controller, Mantis will gleefully exclaim that the vibration feature has returned. 4. This is another hidden flashback. When Psycho Mantis is seizing and the Screaming Mantis armor explodes, keep pressing X to see a few images of Hideo Kojima. 5. When you hear The Sorrow say, “The spirit of the warrior will always be with you.” 6. During the scene where Johnny and Meryl are trying to hold off the Frogs, Johnny will reveal that he doesn’t have any nanomachines. 7. Soon after the previous flashback, Meryl deduces that Johnny’s stomach problems were because he didn’t have nanomachines to suppress them. 8. Shortly after, when Johnny talks about meeting Meryl the first time in Shadow Moses. 9. At the wedding, when Drebin reveals that he was a child soldier and talks about his family. 005.7 – Epilogue 1. When Big Boss says that “Someone can be made to play a specific role.” 2. Later, when Big Boss says that all of the original members of the Patriots have passed on and only Zero remains. 3. When Big Boss kills Zero. 4. When Big Boss reveals that the new strain of FOXDIE that Zero planted in Snake will kill him. 5. Shortly after, Big Boss will reveal that the FOXDIE virus also killed EVA and Ocelot. 6. When Snake is carrying Big Boss, he looks down at his Patriot and says that had Snake been in his place he might not have made the same mistakes. 7. The final flashback occurs when Big Boss salutes in front of the grave. If you have viewed all of the other flashbacks, you should earn the trophy immediately. 006.0 – iPod Tracks One of Snake’s items is an iPod, and you begin the game with nine songs on it. However, you can add several more songs to your library by finding them throughout the game, inputting passwords in the Extras menu, or downloading them in the same area. Effect: Increased stun damage, steady aim while sniping, enemies in a CQC hold will fall asleep, increased life recovery speed while lying down. 007.0 – Big Boss Emblem Guide The Big Boss emblem is easily the toughest part on your road to the platinum trophy. However, it’s not as difficult as it may appear to be as long as you know what to do and plan ahead. This section isn’t going to serve as a full, detailed guide to play through the game, but is rather a collection of tips for the trickier parts. 007.1 – Pre-Game Planning 1. Have the following items before starting your Big Boss run: - The Solar Gun - The Mosin Nagant - “Sailor” or “Rock Me Baby” iPod tracks - Full ammo for the Mk2, Mosin Nagant, Chaff, and Stun Grenades - The Act 1 rebel costume. One of the most important things to remember is that you can’t buy tranquilizer rounds from Drebin on The Boss Extreme difficulty, so if you run out you’re stuck until you can find some. When you begin a New Game+, you’ll start with the same amount of ammo that you ended the last game with, so beginning with the max can only help. The Solar Gun is immensely helpful for several reasons. First, it’s a non- lethal weapon that you can recharge with sunlight, allowing you to conserve your Mk2 and Mosin Nagant rounds. An added bonus is that enemies hit by the Solar Gun will drop random items, which often ends up being tranquilizer rounds since all of your other weapons will be maxed out. Lastly, the two iPod tracks increase you life recovery speed while prone, so if you get hurt you can quickly heal without wasting time. Alternatively, you also regenerate health for every day you don’t play, so you can change the internal clock on your PS3 to heal up as well. 2. Time Management Five hours is very doable, but you have to know what you’re doing and not waste valuable time. Everything adds to your total time – cinematics, codec conversations, pausing or going through the menus, etc. If you ever need to take a break, reach the next checkpoint, save, and quit to the main menu. It’s a little annoying, sure, but it’s the only way to stop the clock. Obviously, you’ll want to skip all of the cutscenes and codec calls, there are a few that you have to watch but they’re fairly short and won’t eat up too much time. For reference, here are my times for my first post-patch Big Boss run. The first times are an estimate of how long it took to complete that act, while the times in parenthesis indicate my overall time. Act 1: 45 minutes (00:44:33) Act 2: 45 minutes (01:29:05) Act 3: 40 minutes (02:09:17) Act 4: 40 minutes (02:46:25) Act 5: 30 minutes (03:15:15) Total: 16 minutes (03:31:53) These times are all very easy to match, and in fact could be surpassed without too much trouble. Finishing the first two acts with a good time is the key to meeting the time requirement, the final three acts are shorter so if you give yourself a little wiggle room you don’t have to worry if you get stuck and take a bit longer later on. On the other hand, you will really hate it if you’re pressed for time near the end and have to try and race through to finish in time, recklessly rushing through only leads to mistakes and frustration. As a final note, your goal should be to complete each act in a little under an hour. You may notice that there is an extra 16 or so minutes at the end, this comes from the credits and some of the post-credits scenes, which you can’t skip. With that in mind, your goal should be to complete the game in 4:30:00 just to be on the safe side. 3. At any time, you can check your stats by viewing the Act 2 Mission Briefing. If you ever think you may have accidentally registered a kill, create a new save and check. On the same note, you should have at least three save files – one made at the beginning of each act, and alternating between the other two just in case you accidentally save when you made a mistake. If this happens, you simply have to replay one or two areas, or in an absolute worst-case scenario the entire act instead of the entire game. 007.2 – Tips As mentioned, this guide is not meant to be a full walkthrough. With that in mind, here are some tips for some of the trickier parts of each act. 007.21 – Act 1 1. Sneaking through the warzones between the PMCs and rebels is not terribly difficult, but one of the perks to helping the rebels is that they will consider you an ally and won’t attack you. Obviously, you don’t have time for that now. If you have the rebel disguise, however, you can equip that in the caves, for example, and not have to worry about it. 2. Advent Palace is your first real test for surviving The Boss Extreme difficulty. This section can be tricky because you have to be careful and avoid dying, but still fight enough to keep the Rat Patrol alive. In this case, the Mk.II is your best friend. Other than the areas where the FROGs are attacking from across the main area, find a good place to hide and take control of your little robot buddy. You can activate stealth camo by pressing X, and then sneak up to the FROGs and zap them, which knocks them out. Additionally, use any of the sleeping gas mines that you picked up on the way up to knock out a few FROGs in key areas. I find that the two most effective places are near the stairs after fighting in the main area for the first time, as you and the Rat Patrol make your way into the diner and kitchen. Several FROGs follow after you and this is an easy way to take them out and focus on fighting in the next area. The second point is right after you enter the bathrooms where Johnny is knocked out and later disables the laser trap. 007.22 – Act 2 1. Before fighting Laughing Octopus, you’ll have to fight several FROGs that burst through the windows. To save time, plant any remaining sleeping gas mines you may have in the hallways to quickly knock them out. If you miss any, you can just use your Mk2 from under the bed without a problem. 2. The Stryker sequence is not very difficult except for perhaps right after leaving Vista Mansion. You have to fend off a wave of Gekkos that are trying to charge you while the zombie-like PMCs attempt to climb onto Drebin’s Stryker and grab you. You should be fine as long as you check for nearby enemies when you get a break, but you have to be extra careful to avoid killing anyone here. You’ll have Gekkos exploding, dirt and dust clouds obscuring your view, and general chaos making it difficult to see everything, and all it takes is one stray PMC to climb up the front of the tank and get shot to ruin your Big Boss run. Just to be safe, save immediately after completing this section and check your stats in the Mission Briefing. 007.23 – Act 3 1. The motorcycle scene is notoriously difficult, and it will undoubtedly take you a few tries. There are, however, a few ways to make your life easier. A. First of all, take advantage of the twin barrel shotgun and stun grenades. They’re a lot more useful than the Mk2, though they certainly have their own drawbacks. Use stun grenades for any area with a group of enemies, particularly when Big Mama stops at various points. The twin barrel, while slow to reload, will help you quickly take out enemies otherwise. B. If you’re really having trouble, enable auto-aim to help you target enemies. Don’t be afraid to disable it when you stop, though, as sometimes it can be tricky to target exactly who you want. C. Take out the gunners in the Hummers first, they’ll inflict a massive amount of damage if they shoot you and it will probably ruin your chance at reaching the next checkpoint. Any time you come up to one, they should be your first priority. D. Exploding barrels don’t count as kills. There are several scattered around the streets, and you’ll often find a group of enemies surrounding them. Take advantage of them. E. One of the trickiest parts is in the last section when two Hummers try to cut you off and Big Mama is forced to weave through them. Simply put, you can’t kill both gunners, and it often leads to getting hit and losing a large chunk of your life. The solution? Smoke grenades. As you’re driving down that street, toss a smoke grenade into the intersection to blind the gunners and slip through unharmed. F. Save the Solar Gun for the end when you’re being swarmed by FROGs. Don’t worry about charging it, just fire off as many shots and hit as many FROGs as you can to get through. It’s nearly impossible to do this flawlessly, but as long as you hit enough of them you’ll retain most of your life. 007.24 – Act 4 1. Save your chaff grenades until after you defeat Crying Wolf. You can get through the other areas without too much trouble, while the later sections can be problematic without them. Make sure to have at least two or three in case you get stuck somewhere. 2. When Otacon is unlocking the door in the Warhead Storage Building, you’re supposed to protect the Mk.III from the Gekko that appears until he can finish. If you’re playing on a New Game+, you can use the rail gun to destroy it as soon as you take control. The game will jump ahead and immediately unlock the door for you, saving you a good three minutes. 3. You can defeat Crying Wolf through normal means, but a quicker ways involves smoke and stun grenades. When you sneak up on her, throw a smoke grenade to blind her and spam stun grenades to quickly knock down her stamina gauge. Stand far back enough that it doesn’t blind you, and throw an additional smoke grenade every three stun grenades to keep her incapacitated. You can easily end this battle in a few minutes this way. Alternatively, if you’ve previously purchased stun grenade rounds for your grenade launcher from Drebin, you can use those instead as well. 007.25 – Act 5 1. Screaming Mantis is the only real challenge in this act. In the battle with the FROGs beforehand, hide in one of the exits on the highest floor and wait for them to come to you. 2. When the Screaming Mantis battle actually begins, immediately run up and hide in one of these areas again. Any damage you received previously will carry into this fight, and you’ll want to be at full strength before Mantis begins attacking more aggressively. Once you starting attacking her Mantis doll, keep the pressure on. When you damage the doll, she’ll lose control over her minions and give you a short break, otherwise her army of FROGs will grow and make it much more difficult to stay alive and get a good shot at the Mantis doll. Additionally, if you have the Solar Gun, use it here. The blast it creates is much larger than the standard bullet, which gives you a slight advantage to actually hit the doll. As a bonus, since it’s a non-lethal weapon, if you miss there’s no risk of accidentally kill a FROG.
