Wow! My 60th review. You will also say wow when you see Fiona's lovely features.
If there is one thing that Capcom does right, it's Megaman and survival horror games. They invented survival horror games with their brilliant Resident Evil franchise. Back in March, I heard about a game being produced by Capcom called Haunting Ground. It seemed interesting, especially because it was in fact made by the same people that made Resident Evil. While the game isn't perfect, it should be played if you like Resident Evil.
Controls have always been weird in survival horror games. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and now Haunting Ground all share the same awkward control scheme. Of course this is to add tension. Besides, you do get used to them after a while. However, Fiona sometimes has a hard time turning, especially when being pursued by enemies. Overall, the game is pretty easy, but the controls make controlling Fiona a bit challenging at times.
The story is quite nice. Fiona Belli awakens in a dungeon in a deserted castle. All she remembers is that her parents died in a car crash, and now she is in the castle. This castle does have a few creepy occupants who pursue Fiona. Of course Fiona stands to inherit this castle, as it belongs to a distant relative.
The graphics are something else. First of all, each environment looks great. All of the character models look great as well. Fiona looks the best of all. Of course being pursued in a haunted castle does inspire you to dress quite skimpy. Seriously, I've never seen a main character with such a low cut skirt, and such bouncy boobs. The sound is very creepy, and tries to scare you at all times.
The game basically is all about puzzles. I think they are well designed, but it is easy to get lost at times. There are only a handful of enemies, but that's a good thing because Fiona can't attack. She does however; free a dog called Hewie, who becomes her companion. Hewie can attack enemies, and solve puzzles as well. There is also a cool panic mode in the game as well. It happens if Fiona becomes scared, or is being pursued by an enemy. The only flaw is that Hewie sometimes runs off, and doesn't always listen to your commands, which can be very annoying.
In conclusion, I think that this is a fine videogame. Some people have bashed it because it wasn't like Resident Evil 4's control scheme. Instead it's like the other Resident Evil games. To get right to the point, if you like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, you'll like Haunting Ground as well.
Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
