ABOUT
=========================================================================
========================================================
This guide is written to provide a complete blueprint of all possible weapon
forging combinations in Shining Tears. Unlike most RPGs, characters' weapons
are permanently equipped to them, and so they are forged (combining materials
and a fee to produce a new weapon or increase the power of the current one)
instead of finding or buying replacements. Although materials are relatively
common, they are used up quickly when forging weapons and the fees are quite
costly, especially for the higher-level weapons, so it is important to know
how best to utilize these resources to provide party members with their best
options.

This guide contains relatively minor character name spoilers for characters
who join later in the game. However, the significance of the names to the
story should be minimal until such time as their purpose is revealed anyways,
so hopefully they won't be too terrible of a spoiler.

*1* MECHANICS OF WEAPON FORGING
=========================================================================
========================================================
Unlike many RPGs, in Shining Tears each character has a set weapon they always
have equipped and that cannot be removed. Rather than changing it out for
newer, stronger weapons, you must forge it into a newer (possibly stronger)
weapon using materials. Each character has 4 "tiers" of weapons, with tier 1
being their starting weapon, and tier 4 being their strongest.

======= *1.1* TIERS AND XION'S LEVEL =======
Tier 1 is strictly the starting weapon.
Tier 2 is an intermediary tier, available as soon as you have the materials.
Tier 3 is available once Xion reaches level 20.
Tier 4 is available once Xion reaches level 40, except for one that needs 50.

Xion reaches level 20 at 122,000 EXP.
Level 40 at 632,000 EXP.
Level 50 at 1,038,000 EXP.

Tiers 2 and 3 have three weapons each, and tier 4 has four weapons: three are
available once Xion reaches level 40, while the fourth (and in some cases
"ultimate") requires him to be level 50.

Tier 1 can be upgraded into any of the three tier 2 weapons. Tiers 2 weapons,
however, can each only upgrade into one specific tier 3 weapon. Additionally,
tier 3 can only upgrade into one tier 4 weapon, except for one tier 3 weapon,
which can upgrade into one of two tier 4 weapons. The level 50 weapon for a
character is sometimes, but not always one of the "two weapon" possibilities.

Weapons can also change within tiers. This allows you to change their current
weapon to others within their tier, whether you may prefer one over another,
or to ensure it can upgrade directly into the desired higher-tier weapon when
the time comes. This function is only available after the story mission "Siege
on the City Walls," however, much later than upgrading weapons.

Finally, weapons can acquire an ATK bonus, represented as a "+X" number, from
+1 to +15. The bonus is added directly onto the displayed ATK value. For every
+1, the price of forging a weapon (shown in the tables throughout the guide as
"Fee") is increased by 20% of the base cost. Thus, a +15 weapon will cost four
times as much as a basic (+0) weapon.

======= *1.2* BLACKSMITHS =======
There are four blacksmiths available for use. Each one performs a specific
function, and attempting any function besides the one they perform will
result in just an increase to the weapon's bonus. All blacksmiths can be used
to boost a weapon or armor's bonus, however.

The Promenade blacksmith: Upgrades the weapon's tier.
Blacksmith's Quarter, upper level: Upgrades the weapon's tier.
Blacksmith's Quarter, lower level: Changes armor.
Dwarven Caverns: Changes a weapon within its current tier.

The first three blacksmiths are available immediately following the first
battle. The Dwarven Caverns blacksmith becomes available after finishing the
ninth story mission, "Siege on the City Walls."

======= *1.3* MATERIALS =======
Materials are the items used to forge, power up, or change a character's
weapon. Every time a blacksmith is utilized for any of these functions, three
different materials are needed; more than one of the same material cannot be
used in a single forge.

Each weapon has a "base" material type, based on the character, that is always
used when upgrading or changing a character's weapon. Other materials have
an associated "property," elemental or otherwise, that is used for upgrading
certain weapon types.

Outside of materials specific to upgrading or changing a weapon, ANY material
can be used equally for any purpose. Mithril, for example, is for upgrading
Xion's weapons, but any character can use it to power up their own weapon
(raise the + bonus) or for any "open" slots in weapon recipes.

Different materials will give different initial bonuses when forging. Other
weapons' materials (such as using Yew for Xion's weapon) will give the lowest
bonus (usually +2-3), while elemental materials give a higher bonus (+3-5).
Orihalcum and Dark Matter can push it higher, and when combined, will often
push it to +7-8 immediately. The best initial forge for a weapon, however, is
the character's weapon material + Orihalcum + Dark Matter. This will regularly
result in +10-11 on the first forge.

Note that "first forge" is a relative term, not an absolute. Any bonus a
weapon has after forging will be irrelevant when forging to give it a higher
bonus, and the above listed material "first forge" limits are more of a
threshold. If a weapon is currently at +4, forging with Dark Matter +
Orihalcum will push it to around +8, even if it was forged a couple of times
to get it to +4 in the first place. Similarly, if a weapon ends up +4 after
upgrading (it can happen), forging with three other character's specific
materials will probably only give +1, since it is beyond the +3 threshold for
those materials.

**CHARACTER MATERIALS**
Mithril: used for Xion's broadswords.*
Yew: used for Elwyn's bows.
Holy Water: used for Ryuna's canes.
Dragon Scale: used for Lazarus' axes.
Magestone: used for Neige's staves.
Beast Fang: used for Volg's claws.
Shinobi Stone: used for Mao's tanto.
Tamahagane: used for Keiner's katanas.
Pegasus Mane: used for Cupido's harps.

**ELEMENTAL MATERIALS**
Mithril: Powerful/exotic physical material.*
Ceramic: Non-elemental/physical material.
Fire Crystal: Fire-elemental material.
Unmelting Ice: Ice-elemental material.
Tourmaline: Lightning-elemental material.
Ether: Aerial/flying/speed-type material.
Orihalcum: Multi-element/holy (undead-killing) material.
Dark Matter: Status/dark/evil-type material.

* Sometimes, Mithril is used as an "elemental" material in other characters'
weapons, so don't use it up as frivolously as character-specific materials
once Xion has a satisfactory weapon.

======= *1.4* FORMULAS =======
There are two general weapon formulas, of which there are few deviations. Note
that the order materials are added at the blacksmith does NOT matter, and will
NOT have any effect on the resulting weapon.

The general upgrade formula, to raise a weapon to the next tier:
[CHARACTER MATERIAL] + [ELEMENT MATERIAL OF WEAPON UPGRADE] + [ANYTHING]

Thus, if you wanted to upgrade Xion's weapon to an ice weapon, you would use:
[Mithril] + [Unmelting Ice] + [Anything]
This, of course, assumes that you are using the correct starting weapon for
the upgrade, which can be found in the character tables later in the guide.
While most weapons can use anything as the third material, upgrading from
tier 1 to 2 has three possibilities from the same starting weapon, and so
certain materials will have priority over the others. These instances are
lised within the guide. There are also rare instances where two specific
materials are needed for an upgrade, also noted within the guide.

The general change formula, to change weapons within a tier:
[CHARACTER MATERIAL] + [CURRENT WEAPON ELEMENT] + [NEW WEAPON ELEMENT]

Thus, to change Neige from a fire staff to an ice staff, you would use:
[Magestone] + [Fire Crystal] + [Unmelting Ice]
Again, this assumes you have the correct starting weapon to make the new one,
which can be found in later sections. Changing within a tier cycles between
the available weapons.

======= *1.5* WEAPON EFFECTS =======
All upgraded weapons have at least one special effect, ranging from an
elemental attack, effective against enemy type, chance of a status, bonus to
a derived stat, or something else. Most higher-tier weapons have a
combination of these effects. This is a detailed list of effect abbreviations
used in the guide and what they specifically mean.

Everything except stat bonuses only affect physical attacks, not magically-
based attacks. Physical skills ARE affected. All effects under Status Effects
and Other Effects will stack with other sources of the effect. Stat Bonuses
stack with other bonuses to the stat as well as a character's natural stat.

The base elemental effects - fire, ice, and lightning - can be useful in
some situations, but tend to cause more problems than they solve over the
longer term, especially on Advanced mode. Elemental effects double the damage
a character would deal for a given ATK stat, but the final damage is then
reduced by the enemy's resistance. A resistance stat of 0 means 2x damage,
while 25 resist is 1.5x damage. The elemental damage bonus is completely
nullified at 50 resistance, and above 50 resist, the element will reduce in
LESS damage than a non-elemental equivalent.

Due to the difficulty and cost (both materials and gold) of changing weapons,
plus the loss of its bonus, go for non-elemental weapons whenever possible.
The Crystal Bracelet accessory will remove a weapon's default element, but
given how many other more useful accessories exist, it's worth avoiding this
when possible. Should you ever decide to exploit elements for a damage bonus,
you can use a Scarlet, Cobalt, or Amber Bracelet.

======= *1.6* TIER 4 AND "STUCK" WEAPONS =======
If Xion is below level 50, characters cannot upgrade to their level 50 weapon,
OR change to it from one of their tier 4 (level 40) weapons. However, changing
weapons at the Dwarven blacksmith cycles through tier 4 weapons, with the
level 50 weapon being one of them. There are NO alternate formulas for
altering tier 4 weapons, and thus the tier 4 weapon that changes into a
character's level 50 weapon is where they will be "stuck" if Xion is not at
level 50 yet. Here is a quick list of each character's "stuck" weapon:

-XION: Ice Disperser
-ELWYN: Snowstorm Bow
-RYUNA: Cane of Love
-LAZARUS: Spark Axe, Freeze Axe, or Burning Axe
-NEIGE: Topaz Wand
-VOLG: Demon
-MAO: Fubuki
-KEINER: Inferno
-CUPIDO: Zeus' Harp

Several of these are elemental weapons, so if you do get stuck with one,
remember these accessories will override the element of a character's weapon.
All four bracelets also give a bonus of ATK +12 and require level 20 to equip.
-Crystal Bracelet (no element)
-Scarlet Bracelet (fire)
-Cobalt Bracelet (ice)
-Amber Bracelet (lightning)

======= *1.7* WEAPON ICON COLORS =======
Elemental weapons will give a character a colored icon for their weapon slot.
Fire weapons have a red blaze behind them, ice weapons have a blue and white
wave, and lightning weapons have an electrical shock behind them. There is
also a fourth "color," used for holy/light weapons: a burst of gold and
yellow light radiating from the center of the weapon.

There are a few effects that produce the "holy" element icon for a weapon:
-All resistance +15 (XFr/XIc/XLt +15); but NOT "All resistances +10"
-Holy effect (bonus damage to undead and destroys them permanently)
-Damage reflection

Just for fun, here's a list of every weapon that has each elemental icon:

-Kongou (Mao, 4**) - All resistance +15
-Purifier (Keiner, 2) - Holy damage
-Mirror Blade (Keiner, 4) - Damage reflection

======= *1.8* ORGANIZATION =======
The following sections are organized according to a priority list. Tier 1's
three possible upgrades are listed in order of priority: If the materials for
both the first and second weapons are added (regardless of order), it will
result in the first listed weapon.

Since tiers 3 and 4 follow a strict upgrade path, wherein each tier 2 weapon
only upgrades to one specific tier 3 weapon, tiers 2 and 3 are listed in the
order established by the priority of tier 1 -> 2 upgrades. Tier 3 to 4 follows
the same logic, although one tier 3 weapon can become two tier 4 weapons, one
being the level 50 weapon for that character. If an upgrade to a weapon is
marked with **, it indicates that upgrade is the "level 50" weapon.

========================================================
=========================================================================
*2* XION'S BROADSWORDS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Xion is the main character in Shining Tears, and will always be present in
battle (except in the second mirror, with a friend's data loaded). As such,
he should be a powerful presence. He is also the only one with two forms:
Dark Xion and Light Xion. And which form he takes in a battle depends on his
ally.

Dark Xion is more physically-oriented, with a three-hit basic combo. The last
hit of the combo can cause knockback, as well. Because only the last hit of
the combo will cause knockback, this makes it much more useful than the
general "knockback" effect many weapons have.

Light Xion is more magically-based, with a two-hit combo that culminates in a
ball of lightning being launched at the enemy. This ball is based on Xion's
MAG stat and is lightning-elemental, both of which tend to limit its
usefulness.

That being said, his tier 2 weapons are fairly easy to choose from. Thunder
Bringer is lightning-element, and provides a pathetic paralysis chance, while
Chill Drifter is ice-element and only offers a small amount of ice resistance.
The Steel Slicer is the true hero here, granting a boost to both accuracy and
critical chance.

Tier 3 has only one elemental weapon: the fire-element Blaze Emitter. Sadly,
it is built directly from the Steel Slicer. The Wind Cutter grants a bigger
accuracy boost and is effective against flying enemies, making it a powerful
option in some battles. The Shadow Slicer, however, gives a nice boost to EVA
and twice the critical hit boost as the Steel Slicer.

Unfortunately, tier 4 is where decisions become quite difficult. Two options
are elemental, including his level 50 weapon. Ice Disperser is the obvious
element and has a meager (5%) chance of causing freeze. Lightning Fencer, his
L50, fares much better: a 20 point DEF boost and 30% attack speed increase.
With the Crystal Bracelet, it can be a decent option.

His two non-elemental options are similarly difficult. Stone Crusher, his
strongest weapon, has a troublesome 20% knockback chance. This can be more
useful for Light Xion, since his lightning ball can hit even a knocked back
enemy, while Dark Xion will just suffer broken combos. The alternative, Soul
Crusher, is his weakest tier 4 (there is a 30 point ATK difference between it
and the Stone Crusher. It does give MAG +25% and a 20% confusion chance,
though. The MAG bonus can help Light Xion's damage (although probably not
much), and the confusion chance can help disable enemies.

Ultimately, all of Xion's options can be argued (except possibly Ice
Disperser), but none shine above the others. Use whatever you may feel best
fits what role Xion will be playing, which will depend heavily on your
favored ally and whether it means Dark or Light Xion.

*3* ELWYN'S BOWS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Elwyn is one of the ranged characters in the game, and a powerful one, with
skills boosting her critical hit rate, penetration (allowing shots to continue
after hitting an enemy), and a damage boost against aerial enemies. Her
weapons usually offer bonuses to these, on top of ACC and status effects.

Tier 2 weapons for Elwyn are fairly unimpressive. Whirlwind Bow is the only
non-elemental option, but Thunder Bow is what upgrades directly to her best
weapon. Hiemal Bow is weak, elemental, and stays elemental all the way to the
bitter end.

Tier 3 weapons are better, though. The Exorcist Bow is impressive as it will
destroy undead permanently (something usually confined to Ryuna or the Holy
Bracelet), while Hunter's Bow does extra damage to aerial enemies. Glacial
Bow's freeze is alright, but pales in comparison to the other options.

For Tier 4, the only true option is her level 50 weapon: the Sure-Kill Bow.
This provides an impressive boost to accuracy and critical, which compliment
her own Penetration skill very well. Snowstorm Bow's knockback can be useful,
since Elwyn is ranged, but it's elemental. Charm Bow's effect is decent, but
it lacks power, which she wants to abuse Rapid Fire for massive damage.

Until Xion reaches L50, though, Elwyn's best bet for tier 4 would be the Charm
Bow, simply because it's not elemental, although both elemental bows have
fairly good effects (large penetration or critical boosts).

*4* RYUNA'S CANES
=========================================================================
========================================================
Ryuna's options should be appraised differently than others, as she (like
Neige) is a caster.

For Tier 2, all options can be considered. Cane of Joy is good for heavy
skill use, while Cane of Zeal offers a nice movement speed bonus, helping her
to maneuver for link skills. Cane of Sadness has a chance of inflicting Curse,
causing afflicted enemies to take twice as much damage.

Tier 3's options boil down to Cane of Fear for a caster Ryuna, allowing her
many more casts with the SP +40, and Cane of Grief to inflict Slow. Cane of
Chaos is lackluster, with a very small bonus to EVA and low chance of confuse,
which can cause enemies to run away from your attacks.

Unlike other characters, all four of Ryuna's tier 4 options are quite viable.
Cane of Peace gives decent HP and SP regeneration. Cane of Love offers lower
SP costs and a chance at Charm, causing enemies to attack each other. Cane of
Awe gives a big reduction to time spent charging spells, although Ryuna's
spells are support and probably don't need to be cast as often as someone like
Neige's spells.

Finally, Cane of Rage offers a different Ryuna: it reduces magic damage, but
has a large ATK stat and raises attack speed. This option could make her a
viable physical attacker with both a HP/SP healing spell and a ATK/DEF
boosting spell, neither of which require her MAG stat to function! Ultimately,
it comes down to what role you want Ryuna to play, but she definitely offers
multiple styles, along with a skill-based undead destruction option.

*5* LAZARUS' AXES
=========================================================================
========================================================
The mighty dragonian has an interesting weapon spread. His tier 2 and 3 are
all elemental, representing fire, ice, and lightning. All upgrade accordingly;
fire to fire, ice to ice, lightning to lightning. Similarly, all effects of
the weapons are mirrored, so choose whatever element you desire.

As for tier 4, well... Lazarus' only non-elemental tier 4 option is the Heavy
Axe. His level 50 weapon, it has the highest ATK and a useful Confuse 20%
effect. But, alas, it has a curse: it reduces Lazarus' movement speed by a
massive 30%! This can be offset by a Speed Brooch or some decent armor (Fleet
prefix gives +20% movement on top of the armor's default bonus), but it will
usually slow Lazarus to a crawl.

So, consider using one of Lazarus' elemental axes, as he will be able to
move with them, at least, and the Spark and Freeze Axes inflict useful status
effects. Burning Axe is discouraged, as Lazarus already has various fire-
element attack options in his skill repertoire, and a status effect is much
more useful than cancelling enemy HP regen, which rarely amounts to much over
the course of a battle.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!REGARDING CHANGING TIER 4 WEAPONS!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lazarus has a real oddity when it comes to changing between his tier 4
weapons. Unlike everyone else (including Lazarus' own tier 2 and 3 weapons),
the Dwarven blacksmith CANNOT freely change his tier 4 weapons.

If Lazarus currently has one of his tier 4 elemental axes (Spark, Freeze, or
Burning), he must go to The Promenade blacksmith and convert it into his
Heavy Axe. This is done by using a Dragon Scale, Ceramic, and Fire Crystal,
Unmelting Ice, or Tourmaline, depending on his current element.

If he does have the Heavy Axe, he must go to the Dwarven blacksmith and
convert it to an elemental axe of choice with the same formula of Dragon
Scale, Ceramic, and Fire Crystal (Burning Axe), Unmelting Ice (Freeze Axe),
or Tourmaline (Spark Axe).

*6* NEIGE'S WANDS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Neige is a caster like Ryuna, and so weapon choice should reflect such. That
being said, most of her weapons offer MAG bonuses.

Tier 2 offers a very sterile selection: three wands that offer elemental
resistances to two elements and the same MAG bonus. Choose this tier based on
which tier 3 and 4 weapons you want.

Tier 3 presents a better selection of options. Crystal Wand gives +10 to all
three elements, similar to the Lunar prefix on armor. The Pearl Wand gives a
bonus to DEF (which Neige may be low on), and a handy 10% SP leech effect.
Both offer MAG +20% as well. The Ice Wand is the odd one out, giving both an
element and no MAG bonus, although the 30% freeze chance could be useful for a
more physically-oriented Neige. Unfortunately, it's difficult to stop her from
casting MAG-based spells.

For her tier 4 weapon, the Diamond Wand is a supreme option, giving +15 to all
three elemental resistances and thus boosting her durability. Despite that,
her other weapons do present good options: Sapphire Wand reduces SP cost, Ruby
Wand offers heightened SP recovery, and Topaz Wand speeds up magic skill
charges. Of these, Ruby Wand can help save skill points in Meditate, but that
can be just as good of a reason to go for a different weapon.

Ultimately, her tier 4 weapon is a tough decision that each player needs to
make based on their own plans. While the same could be said for all
characters, Neige (and Ryuna) are by the book examples where everything has a
good argument, even (or especially) on Advanced mode.

*7* VOLG'S CLAWS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Volg is a potent ally. His Fast Move skill accelerates both himself and Xion
to a huge degree, and he gains a critical hit bonus based on his chain and an
ATK bonus based on current SP.

Volg's tier 2 options include the Phantom, boosting movement speed and a small
EVA bonus and Mosquito, offering poison damage and the potential to forge
directly into his ultimate weapon. The Lightning starts a (logically enough)
lightning-elemental weapon path. While the later weapons may be useful, the
Lightning itself offers nothing but elemental damage.

Tier 3 continues these trends. Shooting Star is built from the Phantom and
gives the same movement bonus, but ACC instead of EVA. The Tempest has a
knockback effect which, admittedly, isn't the best for a close-combat fighter,
but Fast Move means he can move in range again much faster. Thunderbolt is
another lightning weapon that offers a meager chance of paralysis.

As for tier 4... one word: Vampire. Yes, there are other options. Mirage
boasts an even higher movement bonus than previous weapons, Demon has a great
chance of cursing the enemy (doubling the damage they take), and even the
Thunderflash raises attack and movement speed.

But the Vampire has what is arguably the most useful and potent effect in the
entire game: HP leech 10%, aka "10% of damage dealt restored as HP." This
weapon ensures Volg will keep his HP topped off quite easily in any combat
situation, and is so powerful that it puts other weapons to shame, ultimate
or otherwise, for Volg or other characters.

However, after Xion reaches level 40 and before he is level 50, Volg's best
option is either Demon or Mirage. Demon's curse chance provides a massive
damage boost on any affected enemy (even bosses!), while Mirage gives an
amazing boost to movement speed and a decent EVA boost. Consider that the
Demon is what changes into Vampire once Xion does hit L50, though.

Between the Vampire and Volg's Fast Move skill, he is one of the most potent
characters and my all-around personal favorite ally. It's just a shame that
he has a dark soul, thus mandating Light Xion and his lightning ball of
disappointment.

*8* MAO'S TANTO
=========================================================================
========================================================
Mao uses a tanto, which is a short blade. Her attacks don't have amazing
range, but her weapons will often provide a bonus to critical rate and
movement or attack speed (or both).

Tier 2 offers her two disappointing elemental options and one great non-
elemental weapon: the Hayate. This tanto boosts both Mao's movement AND attack
speed, allowing her to sling daggers faster and get around quicker.

The Wakaba continues this tradition in tier 3, giving her additional poison
damage on her weapon (adding to that of her Poison Blade skill). The other
two upgrade paths follow the same elements as tier 2, but offer better
bonuses.

Tier 4 is where Mao really shines, though. Her level 50 weapon, Kongou, gives
+15 to all three elemental resistances, granting her more durability,
especially in Advanced mode. The Wakaba upgrades into it, as well as the
Kamikaze, which grants an insane bonus to movement speed, attack speed, AND
critical chance. Until Xion reaches level 50, definitely use the Kamikaze, but
change to Kongou then, because there's a massive 40 point difference between
their ATK stats, as nice as the Kamikaze's bonuses are.

Her fire elemental path culminates in the Asahi, which gives high SP
regeneration. It can be useful for her to spam skills, but it also limits her
elemental repertoire to just fire. The Fubuki's ice-element is bothersome, but
the knockback chance allows her to keep enemies away more effectively. Both
can be useful, but neither measures up to Kamikaze or Kongou.

=========================================================================
*9* KEINER'S KATANAS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Keiner joins after the mission "Mobile Fortress Strike," and starts with a
tier 1 weapon. Fortunately, Xion should be high enough leveled to get Keiner
at least to tier 3 immediately (and you should have acquired a decent stock of
Tamahagane in the meantime), so tier 2 weapons aren't as important for Keiner.

Of his tier 2 weapons, the only reasonable one is the Purifier. The other two,
Shocking and Burning Edge, are elemental, and provide nothing besides the
element. Though they do have a higher ATK stat, the Purifier is a holy weapon,
so it can permanently kill undead. All this is irrelevant, though, since he
can probably be upgraded to tier 3 immediately. Note that the Burning Edge
upgrade path stays fire-element all the way to tier 4, so it is almost
definitely worth avoiding altogether.

Tier 3 offers slightly better options, but still two elemental weapons plague
his arsenal. Freezing Edge has a good freeze chance, but is elemental.
Similarly, Crimson Lotus is fire-element and only provides the "interdicts
enemy regeneration" effect, which is a novelty at best. The Soul Devourer,
however, has a great SP leeching effect, and is non-elemental as well. It's
built from the Shocking Edge, and builds into two of his tier 4 weapons,
including his L50 weapon WITH HP DRAIN. This is the one you ultimately want.

For tier 4, he has a couple of interesting options. Each weapon has one bonus
effect and two have an element. Until Xion hits L50, Keiner should probably
use the Mirror Blade, since it is the only non-elemental option. It's damage
reflection ability is nice, but not amazing. The Thunderclap is one of the two
weapons the Soul Devourer becomes, and is elemental with a knockback effect.
Unfortunately, knockback can be counterproductive for melee attackers. Last,
the Inferno has a large critical boost and is fire-elemental, but it can work
decently (especially with a Crystal Bracelet) and can be converted directly
into the Life Stealer, Keiner's L50 (and objectively ultimate) weapon.

The Life Stealer: not only does it have the highest ATK of Keiner's weapons,
but it has the 10% HP leech effect. That alone makes it superior to all of his
other options, and it's non-elemental, meaning its only real competition is
the Mirror Blade, which is his weakest tier 4 weapon.

*10* CUPIDO'S HARPS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Like Keiner, Cupido joins late enough that you can probably upgrade his weapon
to tier 3 immediately, bypassing the need to concern yourself with the
efficacy of his tier 2 selections. As such, I'll just give a quick bit of
input on them.

For tier 2, Medusa's or Harpy's Harp is the way to go. The former is weak, but
can inflict Slow, while the latter has the highest power of tier 2 and gives
a good movement speed bonus, and bonus damage to flying enemies. But it's the
fire-element Salamander's Harp that can upgrade into the two best weapons, so
it may be worth going with that one.

Tier 3 has interesting options not seen on other characters. Titan's Harp
gives a massive +100 to HP, a bonus unrivaled by any other single piece of
equipment other than a Survival Book with at least 1000 total cards, and one
point more than an Elite prefix armor or helmet at level 99. Phoenix's Harp,
despite being fire-elemental as well, provides high-level HP regeneration, an
otherwise rare effect, nearly impossible to obtain on armor prefixes. Pan's
Harp is non-elemental, but is the weakest and provides only a moderate MAG
bonus and chance of confusion.

Tier 4 is unique for Cupido, as he has TWO weapons that require Xion to be
level 50. The first two he can access are lackluster compared to the L50
weapons. Zeus' Harp is elemental and only provides a small ACC bonus on top of
that, although it does have the highest ATK of all his weapons. The Gryphon's
Harp has the second highest ATK, but provides only the Aerial bonus. Go with
the Gryphon's Harp for Xion's level 40-49 if necessary, or consider keeping
Cupido with the Phoenix's or Titan's Harp in the meantime.

Cupido's L50 weapons, however, are a different matter. The Siren's Harp gives
a decent MAG bonus (which is admittedly somewhat weak, as all magic is
elemental anyways), but also a 25% Charm chance. The charm effect can allow it
to shatter enemy formations as Xion slashes away. The final option is possibly
the best, however: Hydra's Harp. This potent weapon provides the same HP regen
(high) bonus of the Phoenix's Harp, along with Poison (9), and is non-
elemental. Stacked with a bracelet to boost poison damage, he can devastate
enemy groups while regenerating any HP he's managed to lose.

*12* FAQ
=========================================================================
========================================================
Q: Is there any way to add a prefix to weapons?
A: Unfortunately, no. Almost all weapons of tier 2 and above have a bonus
   effect, anyways, and that is what most non-prefixable armor has as well.

Q: Why are elemental weapons considered so terrible?
A: Enemies in this game have a lot of elemental resistance. The reason for
   this is that an elemental effect will double the base damage a character
   deals to enemies. The final damage is then reduced by a percentage based on
   the target's resistance to that element. 0 resistance is 2x damage, 25 is
   1.5x damage, and at 50 resistance, damage is the same as non-elemental
   would be. Above 50 resistance, enemies take LESS damage from an elemental
   weapon than a non-elemental equivalent.

   It is easier to temporarily exploit elements using Scarlet, Cobalt, and
   Amber Bracelets as desired to exploit this mechanic than to be coerced
   into using a Crystal Bracelet to null an elemental weapon. This is
   especially true on Advanced mode, where most enemies have their average
   resistances floating around 50, resulting in elements rarely dealing much,
   if any, bonus damage.

Q: Can I upgrade to the next tier before the character reaches L20/40/50?
A: Yes, as long as Xion is above the required level. A character can upgrade
   to their L50 weapon even if they're still level 10 or so, as long as Xion
   is at least at 50.

Q: Is there reason not to upgrade to tier 2 as soon as I have the materials?
A: Not particularly. Just be mindful of what tier 3 and 4 weapons your choice
   of tier 2 will upgrade into, although the Dwarven blacksmith allows you to
   change without much effort. It's more important to choose a weapon you'll
   be comfortable with until Xion hits L20, the same as choosing a tier 3
   weapon to last until he hits 40.

*14* CREDITS
=========================================================================
========================================================
Some of these people didn't directly help me with the guide, but did assist
with my recent playthrough. Given the extremely sparse availability of
information on this game, I wanted to honor them anyways.

Andy Yu (yuandy)
~Wrote the general walkthrough/FAQ available on GameFAQs.com. It was an
 essential resource in finding all of the information I did, even if it was
 itself incomplete.

blasster
~Created a long-lived topic on GameFAQs about weapons that contributed some
 tips on how useful certain weapon effects could be.

lilJesta
~Wrote the Weapon Forging FAQ that preceded this one by a decade. While I
 tested everything in my guide myself, his provided a general guiding hand
 that heavily reduced the time I spent figuring things out.

Shiranui777
~Gave suggestions and advice about side missions when I was trying to find
 all of their triggers. Also contributed some advice about useful weapon
 effects.

The Gaming Mole (of Youtube)
~Published a series of Shining Tears playthrough videos on Youtube. While
 probably not intended as a guide or walkthrough, TGM's videos gave me the
 information I needed to determine the trigger for the side mission "For the
 Elves' Medicine," which eluded me for a while.

*15* VERSION HISTORY
=========================================================================
========================================================
1.00     Completed August 10th, 2016.
Well, it's the completed version. Nothing much to say. Barring any errors
that are later corrected, it may be the only version, too.

1.01     Completed August 21st, 2016.
An update after all! I discovered that elemental effects double the damage a
character deals prior to reducing the damage by the enemy's resistance. Also
found that the best combo for initial tempering of weapons is the character's
material + orihalcum + dark matter.

1.02     Completed September 21st, 2016.
Updated my contact info.

1.03     Completed November 6th, 2016.
Touched up a couple small parts of the guide to make better wording sentence
things.
