A few months before Dark Alliance II released, Interplay was sued by Snowblind Studios over unsanctioned use of their engine and withheld royalties. Snowblind eventually won that case in 2005, preventing Interplay from using the engine on any future projects. This ruling, combined with severe financial strain and Snowblind temporarily acquiring the Dark Alliance trademark, are major reasons why a sequel was cancelled.
