| 2. INTRODUCTION |
+-----------------+

Venus & Braves is a "sequel" to "Seven - Molmorth no Kiheitai (the Knights of
Molmorth)." I am reluctant to call it a sequel because plot-wise there are no
connections. Rather, there are clues throughout V&B that the story takes place
chronologically hundreds of years after the events in Seven.

Many gamers have been captured by the beautiful high-res graphics of Venus &
Braves. However, since this game is unlikely to be released outside of Japan,
the language poses a formidable barrier to fully enjoying the game. This
document is an ambitious attempt at translating Venus & Braves. I am not
fluent with the Japanese language. However, my knowledge of Chinese does give
me an edge with kanji (Chinese characters). There will be many instances where
I will not be able to translate the exact meaning of the text. In which case I
will simply write in what I *think* it means.

Sometimes I might translate things a bit too literally, so some dialogues might
seem a little silly or cheesy.

Parts of the guide will be translated by my friend Jason Flaman, whose Japanese
is much better than mine.

A note on translation of people and place names - I have taken care to conform
the translation to official sources (Namco's V&B web site and strategy guide).
The English version of town names can also be seen on the world map in the
game.

This guide contains Japanese text. The easiest way to display Japanese text is
to open this document with your internet browser and set the
View->Encoding/Character Set... to Japanese.

Enjoy!

An intro to the main characters and some minor characters, translated from the
V&B web site. Credits to Jason Flaman who is doing this section.

-----
Blood Boal - An immortal knight rushing towards the future
ブラッド・ボアル

Sex: Male
Age: 345 years old
Occupation: Leader of the Golem Gang
Race: Human
Profession: Knight
Height: 175cm
Weight: 60kg

"I want to live in peace so I have to fight!"

The main character of the story, Blood Boal is a knight possessing both eternal
youth and immortal life.

Born in Molmorth, he was once a knight of the country of Alsena but gained
immortality and eternal youthfulness during an incident at the battle of
Rostidil.

After becoming immortal, Blood joined many more battles as a mercenary. It was
during this time that he became such a powerful knight that he was known and
feared as "The Battlefield Demon", "God-killer Blood", and "The Tragic Devil."
But the days passed in repeated battle and friends and lovers aged and died,
leaving Boal behind. Gradually he began to grow lonely and keenly felt the
harshness of immortality. He drew away from other people and lived for a time
in solitude.

Several ages have now passed, and Boal makes a modest living as the leader of
a gang of rural brigands known as the "Golem Gang of Barcway." Behind his
innocent-looking face lies concealed the powerful edge possessed only by those
who have passed through many battles.

After encountering the Goddess Ariah, Blood shall go forth again into long
days of battle during the war of the "Great Prophecy of Doom."

-----
Ariah - The white-winged spirit guiding the hero

"Take it! Take the Book of Prophecies!"

Aria is a goddess of the Spirit Realm who has been ordered by the Great Spirit
Elgohfen to bring the Book of Prophecies to this world. She commands Blood to
prevent the Prophecy of the Great Destruction.

She possesses an air of cold refinement, as though she is always tense about
something.

Although extremely serious in her efforts to help prevent the prophecy from
coming true, she is unable to understand the feelings of short-lived human
beings. Because of this, there are also clashes between her and Blood.

As she faces the future and fights alongside Blood and other human beings,
what will she think and what shall she feel?

It appears that she is connected with Boalユs attainment of eternal youth and
immortal life....

-----

at healing injuries and providing auxiliary defense.

An orphan, Lily originally lived in the city of Balcway. When Blood and
the Golem Gang began hanging around the city 10 years ago, Lily took a liking
to the gang and joined it.

She is a brave but very feminine girl who is good at doing household chores
like cooking and laundry. She enjoys smelling the flowers growing in the
fields.

It appears that she admires Blood and the Golem Gang very much.

Garef Barran - The Thick Wall of the Golem Gang
ガレフ・バルハン

Sex: Male
Age: 19 years old
Occupation: Warrior
Race: Human
Height: 177 cm
Weight: 83 kg

"Disinfect that wound properly, if it festers it will be much worse later!"

A warrior of the Golem Gang, he takes great pride in his physical strength.

A dependable warrior with a large body.

He is very good at taking care of others. Despite his great physical strength
he possesses great sensitivity and is liked by children. He also notices the
sorts of things that Blood is oblivious to.

He sometimes repeats warnings and instructions out of worry for others.

-----
Wippel Magrainen - The Gentle Knight with the bottomless stomach
ウィッペル・マグライネン

"HA! This is easy! Way too easy! Don't you mess with the Golem Gang!"

He is 17.

A knight of the Golem Gang.
A plump knight with a bottomless stomach.

Although very gentle and seemingly unsuitable for fighting, he has great
enthusiasm and is a "mood maker": his very presence affects the atmosphere of
the whole gang.

He is very particular about food and likes unusual ingredients. He also keeps
a diary of whatever he has been eating. He is one of the members of the
Golem Gang who appear at the very beginning of the story, acts together with
Blood, and is present as the curtain opens upon the long battle of the
Prophecy of Doom.

-----
Wahlrus Farion - The disciple of Blood who knows everything about combat
ウォルラス・ファリオン

The priest of the Golem Gang. He has experienced countless battles and is a
reliable old soldier.

Raised by Blood from the time he became an orphan, he is now the one person in
the Golem Gang most capable of understanding Blood.

Wahlrus understands Blood's worries, troubles and countless other unspoken
things, and is a trusted friend who worries alongside him.

His great enthusiasm for instructing new members of the Gang may come from his
feelings of gratitude to Blood. In this way the resolve passed from Blood to
Wahlrus will in turn be passed to the young members of the Gang.

When young he gave the Golem Gang its name.

He carefully wears the "Kugaibuna Leaf" charm that he once obtained in the
middle of a journey.

Flee is a young archer who heard about the activities of the Golem Gang and
grew to admire it so much that he wished to became a member.

Although his admiration led him to the Golem Gang, he is always nervous and
trembling because he was born and raised in a peaceful village, and lacks
experience with actual combat.

Although Flee's innocent admiration gets the best of him at first, the old
soldier Wahlrus takes the boy under his wing, and he slowly gains in fighting
skills and grows together with his sturdy comrades.

Zeek - One of the four "Wings of Disaster" ~ The Wing of Grief
ジーク

are shallow, meaningless lives...."

One of the "Wings of Disaster", a group of four attempting to plunge the world
into more despair than it has ever known by raising up the demon general
Nagzososahl and creating a demon-world.

He is cloaked in an atmosphere of fear that makes everyone tremble in terror
at his very presence, without him even having to raise his voice.

Blood's encounter with Zeek becomes the start of his fight, and through many
passing ages their relationship is intertwined.

-----
Dee - One of the four "Wings of Disaster" ~ The Wing of Retribution
ディー

One of the "Wings of Disaster," a loyal follower of Zeek. He usually appear in
the form of half-man, half-dragon. His heart is filled with anger, and reacts
to humans with extreme hatred.

-----
Feeny - The peppy faerie companion of the Goddess

Weight: 213g

"Hey! Don't be rude in front of the Goddess. Watch your mouth, human!"

The fairy who acts as Aria's attendant.

Feeny has absolute faith in Ariah and is soft spoken and obedient to her. To
human beings he is often impudent, but at times the things he says without
restraint are the truth and could not be mockery.

Together with Blood and Ariah this faerie will also fight the long battle of
the Prophecy of Doom, encounter many new friends and witness the many events
of the time.

-----
Miletta Maguerin - The strong-minded Genius Witch who looks deceivingly sweet
ミレッタ・マグウェリン

Sex: Female
Age: 23 years old
Occupation: Witch
Race: Human
Height: 136cm
Weight: 29kg
Three Sizes ミ B:74 W:55 H:78

"G, G, Give that back!!"

A lively witch who makes her living together with Olga and Leo by accepting
work from the Skulea Guild. While in the middle of gathering white roseberries
on Roseberry Road she encounters Blood and his friends, and joins them on the
journey they take afterwards.

She possesses great magical power at odds with her small body and angelic
appearance, and a strong-mindedness that is even more so. Her powerful
witchcraft is brilliant and does not appear to be the result of constant
effort or practice. She is Olga's girlfriend, and although they are a happy
couple she completely controls their relationship.

However, it appears she only shows her feminine side to Olga....

-----
Olga Dooga - The tender-hearted Giant
オルガ・ドゥーガ

Sex: Male
Age: 28 years old
Occupation: Barbarian
Race: Human
Height: 205
Weight: 184kg

"No, I'll search for her. I'll get her back! My very, very, very, very, very
precious...."

A barbarian who encounters Blood while traveling on a job with Miletta and Leo.
Afterwards he joins Blood on the journey that follows.

This kind man is Miletta's boyfriend, and he is completely whipped by her. But
while lacking a delicate sense of refinement, this relationship completely
satisfies him.

He is never doubted by anyone and possesses a pleasing personality, but like
many other people who join with Blood in his race to stop the Prophecy of Doom,
he will be caught up in the terrible events of his time.

-----
Leo Guterham - An impressionable, beautiful youth who grows with battle
レオ・ガッタカム

Sex: Male
Age: 15 years old
Occupation: Adventurer
Race: Human
Height: 163cm
Weight: 45kg

"Stop this? Can you possibly be so serious? This is just one little quarrel,
they happen all the time. Itユll be fine if you just leave it alone."

In the middle of a journey with Miletta and Olga he encounters Blood and his
friends, and becomes a member of his group.

Possibly because he had been together with the powerful couple of Meletta and
Olga, or possibly because he possessed an impressionable personality, his
attitude is tinged with sarcasm. But behind this attitude his passion, hope,
and even doubtful feelings all reside together, and he has youthful anxieties.

In the midst of the battle that will determine the future, he gradually will
discover something important.

Under the guidance of Flee the archer, he will become strong enough to be the
person that understands Blood the best.

-----
Vivid Orrin - The Eternal Great Witch who lives for freedom
ヴィヴィ・オールリン

Sex: Female
Age: Unknown
Occupation: Great Witch
Race: Human
Height: 165cm
Weight: 46kg
Three Sizes ミ B:88 W:56 H:84

"Give me a break! I don't want to risk my life!"

Although human, Vivid is a woman who gained eternal life by undergoing an
ancient trial.

An elusive, mysterious Great Witch that tags along with Blood. Although she
has transcended time and definitely appears to possess great power, her true
goal and intentions are wrapped in mystery.

Despite her appearance of flashy arrogance, she has vast experience and knows
everything down the last hidden secrets of the world.

She uses her experience and great power exclusively for herself, so that she
may live freely as she chooses. With bewitching magical powers and unrestrained
boldness, she holds those around her at her mercy.

Despite her immortality she has many lovers, but is unable to care much about
them as they are mortal and will age and die.

In the midst of a world faced with the Great Prophecy of Doom, what will this
woman do?

The time: Acral Year 999.
According to the Prophecy of Well-Varius, this is the year that monsters

Blood Boal was a knight known as "God-Killer Blood," "Battlefield Demon," and
"the Tragic Devil." Possessing immortality, Blood passed through countless ages
and now lives in a small mining town called Barcway near the border of the
Southern Continent.

His days of fighting are past, now he enjoys a modest happy life with his
comrades of the Golem Gang.

The town has been preparing day and night for the upcoming Millenial Festival.
However, monsters suddenly appear at this peaceful little town. In a panic,
the Golem Gang grabs for their swords.

Somehow they manage to defeat the monsters, and the town rushes into the
Millenial celebration.

However...

In the Year 1099

The entire world -
A dark brown sky, steel-coloured moon.
A discordant ring that does not stop. The land trembles at this sound.
Under the wings of disaster, black roots seem to spread.
Tears that have fallen. A holy girl shot through.
The world is being covered in despair.

     Well-Varius Prophecies 56:1

In the final showdown are a dragon and a warrior mage of extraordinary
strength. Also, the words of a mysterious woman passed countless times through
the town, "The terror of the monsters has not yet left. Unless something is
done this town will perish... as will the human race." It is this message that
pressed darkly on the heart of Blood.

The white-winged spirit known as the Goddess Ariah descends before Blood,
warning him that the "Great Destruction" of the Prophecies has truly occurred.
Also, "It" has already begun. Ariah then entrusts Blood with the Book of
Prophecies.

Blood sets out on a journey with his companions, bearing with him all his
memories of his companions and friends. Soon battles shall envelope not just
the continent of Acral, but also the entire world.

At the end of their ordeals awaits the Great Witch Vivid, who is said to
possess undiminishing life. Goddess Ariah, Blood the Ageless Knight, and their
many comrades: in the midst of their long battle throughout the 100 years of
the prophesised "Great Destruction," they shall encounter meetings and
partings, love and be loved, and also face death. The wills of these brave

__5.0 - OPENING SCENE__

"In the Year 999

A monstrous evil will awaken from its slumber in the southern lands.
With the passage of time, the seeds of terror and despair will be sown
throughout the land.

     Well-Varius Prophecies 44:7"

Narrator:
The time- Acral Year 999.
According to the Prophecies of Well-Varius, this is the year that monsters
causing great calamity will appear in the world. However, on the eve of the
Millenium the townsfolks are too busy to worry about the monsters written
in a book. You see... at the dawn of the year 1000, the town is preparing for
the Millenial Festival to celebrate the coming of a new era.

<cut scene with Blood plays>
 ... Blood... Blood... Blood... Blood!

???:
Blood!!

Blood:
Did I... die?

???:
Blood!! Please get up!

Blood:
.... Lily?

Lily:
We're in big trouble!

Blood:
For some reason... I didn't die?

Lily:
Blood! Stop being half asleep!! Monsters are attacking the town!

Blood:
The town? So, it is really happening....

Lily:
Monsters are appearing and we're in big trouble!
What should we do? Are those the monsters predicted in the Book of Prophecy?
What should we do? The townsfolks are all frightened.
What should we do? Blood, can you please help us?

Blood:
Lily, calm down! What would we do if you have a breakdown?

Lily:
Eh? Uh... you're right. Yes.... Sorry.

Blood:
Where's the team?

Lily:
Outside awaiting Captain's order.

Blood:
...indeed what I expected of the Golem Gang. All right, let's go!

Lily:
Yes!

<fight battle, Blood explains battle basics and rotation>

<after battle>
Blood:
Good job. I expect no less from the team. Here comes the next one, be on guard!

<fight battle 2>

Blood:
Yeah, what a rush! Let's push on! Be on guard. Don't forget the basics.

<fight battle 3>

<after battle>
Lily:
Blood, are you all right?

Blood:
Yes, and on your end?

Lily:
Thanks to Wahlrus things are all right.

Wahlrus:
I say, nothing but flattery comes out of you. Blood, we just finished over
there so we will reinforce you here.

Blood:
Right, let's push on with our full force.

<Lily and Wahlrus explain their skills - row heal and attack support>
<fight battle, save after battle>

Blood:
Is everyone OK?

Wippel:
Leave it to us, Captain Blood! A little scratch won't bring us down.

Lily:
There now, Wippel! I got hurt guarding you.

Wippel:
Heh heh... sorry. Ah- Helping out makes me hungry. Wahlrus, got any snacks?

Lily:
You're absolutely hopeless.

Garef:
[to Lily] Disinfect that wound properly. If it festers it will be much worse
later.

Lily:
Garef? [chuckles] That's all right. I'll just give it a lick.

Garef:
If it festers it will be much worse later.

Lily:
Yes, yes, all right I know.

Garef:
Blood, we shouldn't hang around. there are more monsters remaining around the
town.

Blood:
Yes, you're right. Wahlrus! How's the condition of everyon's weapons?

Wahlrus:
No problems. Even if your sword is nicked, I can fix it as if it's new.

Blood:
Indeed, Wahlrus. We can count on you on such matters.

Wahlrus:
It's nothing... compared to what you have done for me.

Blood:
Right. Let's go! We must defeat all the monsters!

Wippel:
Eh~ We're going already? Can you wait a moment please? This pate is really
good. I should especially note it down.

Lily:
Wippel! Hurry up! I can make bat-frog pate for you whenever you like.

Wippel:
Frog? So it was frog! No wonder I've never tasted it before. This is a local
Barcway dish isn't it?

Lily:
NOW, Wippel!

Blood:
......

Lily:
Blood? What is it?

Blood:
I thought I was being watched. Maybe it's just my imagination. Sorry, let's
hurry.

Lily:
...Can't you see the one who is always watching you is standing right here....
hmph!

Narrator:
The arrival of the monsters is the greatest disaster the town has ever
experienced. The townsfolks are so shaken that they are not able to fight back.
At such a time, the only people rising to defend the town belong to what others
have called an "unnecessary" and "senseless" group in the past - the Golem
Gang.

Tergahl:
Captain!!

Baladin:
Sorry we're late!

Wippel:
You're VERY late!

Baladin:
Moron! It's because you slept in that we had to sub in for you....

Garef:
That's enough! Anyway, seems like all our force is here.

Lily:
We'll show them the true might of the Golem Gang.

<new members join>

Blood:
"A monstrous evil will awaken from its slumber in the southern lands.
With the passage of time, the seeds of terror and despair will be sown
throughout the land...." So it is true?....

Lily:
What did you say?

Blood:
Uh, nothing. Let's go!

__5.1 - CHAPTER I - THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS__

<after 1st fight>
Blood:
Wahlrus! You're bleeding....

Wahlrus:
Ah, don't worry.

Wippel:
I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Wahlrus was covering me....

Wahlrus:
Quit your gibbering, child. We still have enemies to fight.

Wippel:
Wait!! I'm coming too....

<after 2nd battle>
Blood:
?! (that stare)....

???:
......

Blood:
You, you're not from around here. What are you doing in such a place? Hurry and
take cover or the monsters will.... [mystery woman disappears] What the heck?

<after 3rd battle>
Garef:
If we don't clear out the monsters fast the streets will get all smashed up.

Lily:
What should we do, Blood?

Blood:
We have to push on. Is everyone all right to go on?

Garef:
You underestimate us. Lily, don't worry. The Golem Gang will fight on. Your
town will not be destroyed.

Lily:
[agrees]

<fight battle>

Young Man from Barcway:
Damn! We are almost at the time of the new Millenium. The prediction from the
Book of Prophecies really came true.

???:
So it seems.

YMfB:
The town would be done for if it weren't for the Golem Gang.

???:
Where did they go?

YMfB:
? I think they went down this street. Hey, Miss! Won't you be eaten by the
monsters? Hey! ... Who is she anyway?

<prompt to save>

Narrator:
The Golem Gang defeated all the monsters that were invading Barcway.

YMfB:
You saved us! Thank you! You guys are really powerful.

Narrator:
That was the first time that the Golem Gang were showered with words of praise.

Wippel:
Heh heh! That was easy! Way too easy! Don't you mess with the Golem Gang!
You can thank us by making some good food for the Millenial Fest. I'd like
some bat-frog pate!

Lily:
And don't make fun of the Golem Gang anymore, okay?

YMfB:
Uh... ah... of course not.

Lily:
And make sure you tell everyone in the town about Blood and his team's victory.

YMfB:
All right, okay, I get it!

Blood:
Lily... just now, weren't you a bit patronizing?

Lily:
But have you heard what people have been saying about us?

Blood:
Yeah, more or less.

Lily:
Then isn't it time to get a fairer evaluation?

Blood:
Whatever. It makes no difference to me.

Lily:
.... the Captain is so difficult!

Garef:
Well, well. There now, poor Lily.

Blood:
How so?

Garef:
It's for your sake that she's....

Blood:
For the Golem Gang's sake, you mean?

Garef:
Beats me....

???:
Seems like you are quite skillful with your sword, Blood Boal.

Blood:
! How did you know my name?

???:
The old man there was quite light on his feet too. Not bad. That young man also
has great strength.

Blood:
Hey, what are you talking about?

???:
Although the girl's weak in strength and stamina, she supports her team mates
well. I guess she can pass.

Blood:
Hey! What are you saying? Answer me!!

???:
However, only this one cannot become anything useful.

Wippel:
[scared] Huh? What? Me? Wh-why do you say that?

???:
I think you know the answer, don't you? All in all you are a hindrence.

Blood:
That is none of your business!

???:
.... Where does this kindness come from? Is it because of the sense of duty
of raising him since a baby?

Wippel:
[whimpers] .... Captain Blood....

???:
There is no room on the team for unnecessary persons. Expel him right away.

Blood:
Shut up!

???:
[frowns] The terror of the monsters has not yet left. Unless something is done
this town will perish... as will the human race.

Blood:
 !? You.... Who are you?

Villager:
Oh no!! Monsters!!

Wahlrus:
[to Wippel] Hey boy! How long are you going to keep crying? Now's the time to
show us what you've got! That... is how you can repay us for raising you.

Wippel:
Y-Yes, I'll do my best!

Garef:
What's with this monster? Such an aweful stench.

Blood:
Agh! Brace yourselves.

??? [dragon]:
Puny humans wish to fight me? HEE-HEE-HEE-HEE! Don't make me laugh!

<fight the dragon, lose>

Blood:
Damn! .... He's too strong....

??? [Dark armoured man]:
What are you doing, Dee?

Dee:
Pardon me. These foolish humans tried to resist.

???:
We have done what we came for in this town. There's no time to fool around.
Let's go.

Dee:
Yes Sir.

Blood:
W... wait.

???:
Hmm? Still trying to resist?

<fight the dark knight, lose>

Blood:
.... Ungh!

Dee:
You shall die for obstructing us! I will eat you here and now!

???:
Enough, Dee. Didn't you hear me? We are in a hurry.

Dee:
But!

???:
Let it go. Human lives are so frail. We are finished here.

Blood:
......[groans in pain]

???:
Weaklings! You can die of old age in your trifling little lives. [ed's note: I
am not quite sure with how to translate this part, so I *think* that's what he
meant.]

<flies off with Dee>
<prompt to save>

Narrator:
Just like this, the monsters were gone and the new year arrived without further
incident. The elation of victory was even greater at the Millenial Festival, as
children and adult alike danced and sang for seven days and seven nights. The
stars of this celebration were none other than the new heroes of the town - the
Golem Gang.

Wippel:
Deeeelicious. I MUST take notes on this. Barcway's festival foods are
definitely the best!!

Blood:
Wippel, are you eating or are you taking notes? You're spilling stuff every-
where.

Wippel:
Oh, Captain Blood. Wanna eat this? There's one piece of thigh meat left.

Blood:
No, that's all right. My hand hurts from all the hand-shaking. I'm going to go
rest a bit.

Wippel:
Okay, then I'll eat your share of the food as well.

Blood:
......

Wahlrus:
Are you thinking about that man?

Blood:
Yeah, he got away. To think such a powerful man exists....

Wahlrus:
As things are, humans are in grave danger, isn't that right?

Blood:
 !?

Wahlrus:
Well, Blood. The whereabouts of those monsters also weighs on my mind. However,
I can't stop thinking about the words of that long-haired woman. She is too
calm to be a pure and simple threat.

Blood:
Are what she said really the truth?

Wahlrus:
At the very least.... Her assessment of our strengths is correct.

Blood:
[sighs]

Lily:
So here you are! Both of you come quick!

Blood:
What is it? Did monsters show up again?

Lily:
No, no! Garef got his head stuck in a wine barrel! Hahahahaha! It's hilarious.

Wahlrus:
Well, this I have to see.

Lily:
Over here, over here!

<fade out>

Narrator:
Thus begins the story of the Golem Gang's long long battles, lead by Blood
Boal.

Chronicles of the 11th century Acrali miracles and the distinguished. This is
the record of a Goddess who confronted a world crisis, an immortal man, and
many nameless souls who fought bravely.

<opening cut scene plays>

__5.2 - CHAPTER II - SWORDS OF THE GUARDIANS__

<28th day of the year 1000 - Barcway - Main Street>

Narrator:
After the Millenial Festival the streets returned to the usual hustle and
bustle. The people have taken back their peaceful lives and have buried the
monsters with the past. That is, everyone except for Blood Boal.

The Man with extraordinary strength and the dragon haunt Blood's dreams and
clouds his heart. Amidst the clouds, he heard the words of the mysterious
woman, "The terror of the monsters has not yet left."

Lily:
Blood, taking a nap again?

Blood:
I'm awake. Did you just get back?

Lily:
yeah, I went grocery shopping with Wippel. And... heh heh, Blood, do you notice
something different?

Blood:
What is it? Did you add something to your dress?

Lily:
No, that's not it at all!

Blood:
 ? Where's Wippel?

Lily:
He's taking notes on a delicious sweet pear he bought in town.

Blood:
Again? Hasn't he already written 10 volumes of those cooking journals? If only
he put half as much energy into his training as he does in food....

Lily:
Haha! Then he wouldn't be the Wippel we know now would he?

Blood:
Yeah, that's true.

Lily:
Oh yeah! I saw Mrs. Yuriel's baby, she named her Fuuri. The name has a 'fluffy'
sound to it.

Blood:
Hmmmm.

Lily:
As for me, I wonder if I will ever name a baby of my own?

Blood:
Isn't it a bit too early to talk about this?

Lily:
Hey Blood, help me choose a name?

Blood:
!? Why am I the one to decide?

Lily:
Come on. Here, pick one-
<choice of Aref, Ash, Gefahha. I chose Ash>
Ash? Hmmm, it's the best one isn't it?

Garef:
That's it. I finished making the rounds.

Blood:
Good work. Nothing unusual today?

Garef:
Nah, no sign of any monsters. But there are some strange folks about.

Lily:
Oh yeah! I saw them too - "The Guides of Nelgo."

Garef:
"Listen to the words of Well-Varius," they said. Then they all stood on their
hands.

Lily:
Also, they were calling upon blessing rains and skipping through the town on
one foot.

Blood:
.... What a strange bunch. Wouldn't it be better if they became entertainers?

Lily:
Hee hee. Well, sooner or later who they really are will be exposed.

Garef:
Hmm? Lily, you.... Did you put something on your cheeks?

Lily:
Oh, the snapdragons bloomed on the way into town. Its flowers can be used for
colouring. So, I used a little to.... Aw, come on, don't look at me so closely
like that. I have to go make dinner now.

Blood:
So you noticed, eh?

Garef:
What? You mean you didn't notice?

Blood:
Nope.

Garef:
.... the guy just doesn't get it.

Blood:
 ? I'm going for a walk before dinner's ready.

<bumps into Wahlrus outside>

Wahlrus:
Oh Blood. Just the one I need to see. Hey young man! This is the captain.

Flee:
Nice to meet you! I'm Flee. Well, the battles in 999, uh... I hold in "great
esteem" the "honorable exploits" of the "Gaufre Gang"....

[editor's note: ok, in Japanese, the kid is being super respectful and using
lots of honorifics in his speech - stuff that's kind of hard to translate.
Also, gaufre is a kind of French waffle. I didn't know that until I looked it
up.]

Blood:
Gaufre.... What the heck?

Wahlrus:
He wants to join the team... not to mention feeling a bit nervous.

Flee:
Yes Sir! yoroshiku onegaishimasu!!

[editor's note: yoroshiku onegaishimasu is another Japanese honorific
expression that is difficult to translate. It is often used in workplace when
one first meets his/her co-workers or when asking favours. It carries the
meaning of "please take care of me," "I beg your indulgence," or "please give
me guidance."]

Blood:
All right, what can you do?

Flee:
Yes Sir! I'm good with a bow.... Oh! Eh? Eh!?

Wahlrus:
You forgot your most precious bow? Ha-Hahaha!

Flee:
S-Sorry! I'll be right back!!

Wahlrus:
What a funny young man.

Blood:
Too funny. Are you sure about him?

Wahlrus:
Did you see his eyes? They show his true strength! He's the real thing.

Blood:
Well then, when he shows up again tell him we are the Golem Gang, not the
Gaufre Gang.

<fade out>

Narrator:
Blood Boal let his feet took him to the edge of the town.

Blood:
[sings] "Grind, grind, grind, the rainy day does. Do not give in to mistakes,
do not let sadness rise."

[editor's note: The song's translation is a rough guess. V&B trivia - this is
also the song sung by Balh Boal in "Seven - Molmorth no Kiheitai."]

???:
Why are you idling around?

Blood:
! You.... Sorry, can't talk right now. I have a lot on my mind.

???:
Can't even cut a member from your team. What kind of leader are you?

Blood:
Hey! Didn't you hear me? Shut up! This is Golem Gang's own problem.

???:
Which in turn is also the world's problem.

Blood:
What do you mean?

???:
Look at the big picture, Blood Boal. Your team must from now on become stronger
in order to fight the oncoming monsters. If, however, your team becomes weak,
then you must remove the shackles that bind it and add new strength to the
team.

Blood:
I can't!

???:
? Why? You and I ought to come to the same conclusion.

Blood:
I'm different! I will not expel someone based just on his fighting ability.

???:
Humans. They have such complicated thinking. However, Blood Boal. You must not
forget your priorities. You are different from other humans. Only you can
accomplish something so grand that no others can do.

Blood:
! ... different from... the others...?

"That night, everyone impatiently looked for Blood. They found him standing
there deep in thought. Blood did not tell them his meeting with the mysterious
woman.

Things fell back into routine. However, as the hours spent on thoughts and
reflections increased, that little secret begins to strangle Blood.

One day...."

<day 42, the year 1000>

Wippel:
Captain Blood! I did it at last! I got myself a seven-tailed lizard.

Blood:
Seven-tailed lizard?

Wippel:
It's one of the three delicaies of the World of Fantasia. It was being sold at
today's market! I'm going to try making a stew right now. Wanna try some?

Garef:
Wippel, I don't think a delicacy of the Fantasia can be so easily bought in
this town. It must be a fake. Stop it or you'll ruin your stomach.

Wippel:
Aww, that's mean. Why did you have to say that? Right, Captain Blood?

Blood:
I will not eat the stew. Wippel, you will not eat it either.

Wippel:
Eh?

Blood:
Fighting is our job. We must be in top condition at all times. You are a member
of the team. You must remember that.

Wippel:
I- I'm sorry.

Garef:
Blood?

Lily:
Blood! We got trouble!! There are monsters in the mining tunnels.

Blood:
Monsters!? Is it that dragon!?

Lily:
I don't know, but we must hurry!

<at Chris Mine Shaft, day 42 of the year 1000>

Blood:
Let's go!

<begin battle>

Wippel:
Uuuuugh! It hurts....

Blood:
What's wrong?

Wippel:
Um... Uh... My... stomach... hurts.

Blood:
Wippel, you didn't...? Retreat for the time being!

<lose battle>

Blood:
Wippel, did you eat the seven-tailed lizard? Why?! Didn't I tell you not to eat
it!?

Wippel:
I- I- I'm sorry. I... um....

Blood:
Shut up! Because of your negligence you have put the whole team in danger.

Wippel:
[whimpers] .... I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Lily:
Now now.... Blood, Wippel already apologized.

Garef:
Fortunately none of us are injured. When Wippel recovers we'll go challenge
the monster again.

Wahlrus:
Blood, sorry to trouble you now, but we have a visitor.

Blood:
A visitor?

Flee:
Pleased to meet y... ah I mean, hello. I'm Flee. Please let me join you. I've
made sure to bring my bow this time.

Wahlrus:
Blood, this is your decision as the captain.

Blood:
......

Lily:
Blood? You wouldn't!

Garef:
What's your hesitation? You must measure up Wippel.

Wippel:
Captain Blood. I'll do my best. I'll stop buying things to eat, and I will stop
my cooking journals. i will be part of the team and train hard.... So....
Please don't kick me off the team!

<choose - let him stay or kick him out. If you keep him he'll just keep getting
stomach aches, so just boot him.>

Blood:
[sighs]...... I'm sorry Wippel. You're not able to pull your weight here.

Wippel:
[cires]...... This is ... my home... after all.

Blood:
Sorry. I don't have the luxury to provide a nest for those not able to fight.

Wippel:
[cries]..... I see!

Lily:
Oh, Wippel!! Your cooking journals....

Wippel:
Here, these are for you. I no longer need them. Heh, there are some fine
recipes recorded here. But... since they'll just get in the way I should just
burn them.

Lily:
Don't do that!

Blood:
Wippel!

Narrator:
Blood made Wippel a compromise, and put the ten volumes of journals into his
hand.

Blood:
You must keep these with you and continue to write. Do you understand? Only you
can write such a great cooking journal.

Wippel:
...... [crying]

Blood:
Also don't stop experimenting with food. Being a glutton and a cry baby are
your specialties.

Wippel:
No way... so I... can't stay in the gang after all.

Blood:
Wippel, I want you to be who you really are.

Wippel:
What is this? I don't understand! Captain Blood, I don't understand! U-Waaaaah!

<Wippel leaves the team>

Blood:
...... Flee!

Flee:
Y-Yes!

Blood:
Since you're inexperienced in actual battles, Wahlrus will show you the ropes.

Flee:
Oh, yes! Understood!

<Flee joins the team>

Blood:
Right. Let's go, people!

Lily:
.... Blood....

Garef:
Hmmm....

Wahlrus:
As seasons change, so do people. Some day, Wippel will understand, as will the
others.

Blood:
Everyone's seasons... are too short.

<Chris Mine Shaft, day 43 of the year 1000>
<Fatigue is introduced, see section 6.3 of this FAQ for details>

<fight 1st monster, initial monster extra damage is introduced. See 初回攻撃力
in Section 7.4 of this FAQ>

<after 1st fight>
Wahlrus:
You're doing quite well.

Flee:
Really? Thanks!

Wahlrus:
However, you should fix that overeager habit of yours.

Flee:
.... Yes, Sir

<fight 2nd monster, initial monster guard is introduced. See 初回防御力 in
Section 7.4 of this FAQ>

<after 2nd fight>
Wahlrus:
The basics of both the bow and the staff are the same.

Flee:
Which means....?

Wahlrus:
Timing is the key. Next is a determined resolve.

Flee:
.... I see....

Wahlrus:
It's all right if you don't understand it all at first. Keep it in mind and
you'll get it eventually.

<fight 3rd monster, monster's row attack  列攻撃 is introduced>

<after 3rd fight>
Lily:
Garef.... I still can't believe it. Why did Blood expel Wippel?

Garef:
I guess he's just doing what he thinks is best for Wippel. His longetivity has
given him a rather different perspective on life.

Lily:
......

<fight 4th monster, raging blow 怒りの一撃 is introduced>

<after 4th fight>
Wahlrus:
Idiot! If you close in like that you'll get yourself killed!

Flee:
S-Sorry!

Wahlrus:
... No, I was being a bit impatient. We don't live forever after all.

Flee:
You mean-

Wahlrus:
I am passing on my skills and knowledge to you, young one. This is the only
way to continuously protect Blood.

<fight 5th monster, element types 属性 are introduced, see Section 6.3>

<after 5th fight>
Flee:
We did it, Blood!! What a great victory!!!!

Blood:
Yes, well done everyone. Good work.

Narrator:
Peace is regained. Acral Year 1000.
The Golem Gang was victorious at the Chris Mine Shaft of Mt. Barcway. The weak
was released from the team to make room for the stronger. This was the first
time Blood had to substitute in a stronger member. Blood himself, as the
captain, was quite troubled over this matter, let alone the other members of
the team.

However, victory is victory. In war, victory is the only proof. Everyone
expected it from the gang that was indifferent to even its own strengths. All
that will become a laughable yet beautiful portrait of the past. In the new
millenium, Blood will lead the Golem Gang to power and victory.

<prompt to save>

__5.3 - CHAPTER III - INTO THE DARKNESS__

Narrator:
While the Golem Gang was recuperating after defeating the monsters in the mine
shaft, Blood once again wandered to the edge of town.

Blood:
There's something you need to know - we won.

???:
I know.

<The mysterious woman answered curtly and without emotions as she opened a
thick book. The pages turned by themselves even though there was no wind. Her
slender finger traced the words as she read aloud.>

???:
The Year of the Moon. The Year of the Fire. The rocky hills will be haunted by
decaying bats. And, in the Year of the Fire, the Disaster of Dark Eternity will
awake in the South. It will shatter the hills and before long tint the entire
Southern Continent with red.

Blood:
The Prophecies of Well Varius? So, you're one of those who worship the
prophecies. Are you a member of "The Guides of Nelgo?"

???:
Soon, a disaster will befall this town. If nothing is done, the town will be
destroyed.

Blood:
! What...?

???:
The only way to avert the disaster is to make your Golem Gang stronger. Your
priority is the team's combat ability. So, you must replace the weak with the
strong, as you have done just recently.

Blood:
You believe in the Prophecies, don't you?

???:
Five more years, and the old soldier would become weak. The frailty would eat
away at him mentally and phisically.

Blood:
That's not true! Wahlrus is still fit. His stamina is as good as Flee's.

???:
What I speak of is the matter of 5 years from now. Normal humans age. Blood
Boal, you of all people should know that well.

Blood:
Just who are you anyway?

???:
One more thing - to face monsters much stronger than you, you can carry items
with magical powers. You may find weapons or armors as you defeat the monsters.
The items will become stroner as you equip and use them. Please remember it
well.

<Introduce items, please see section 6.3 of this FAQ>

???:
Also, sometimes you may need to run away if the battle is not going well for
you. It's part of the tactics. <press Triangle during the battle to run away>

Blood:
Who are you really...?

???:
The next disaster will arrive ten years later at 1010.
You must train the best troops and magical items to help you. Good luck!

<From now on you cn move around the world map and defeat monsters that appear
in towns.>
<The Tavern, see section 6.3>
<Red Frog's Pond - here you can begin expedition 遠征 here, save, change
options, or quit the game>

***************
The ominous words of the mysterious woman echoed in Blood's ears. Every day
he patrolled the streets and prepared for any monsters that may show up in
town. The mighty warrior mage and the dragon have not returned, but Blood
could not erase from his mind the threat they pose.
***************

<day 124 of the year 1000>

Lily:
Blood! A Monster appeared in the Tsukimi Forest (月見の森)! The children
playing there saw it!

Garef:
Are the kids all right?

Lily:
They're okay. They ran back as fast as they could.

Garef:
Their safety is above all else.

Blood:
Right, everyone get ready.

Wahlrus:
Here's your sword, I've kept it sharp for you.

Blood:
Thanks Wahlrus. How are you... feeling?

Wahlrus:
? As it is, I'm tip top. I had a good workout with Flee this morning.

Blood:
That's good then.

Wahlrus:
????

Flee:
My... my bow....

Wahlrus:
Damn it, you lost it again?! I've told you again and again. Your weapon is your
life. Keep it by your side even when you sleep.

Flee:
S-Sorry. I had it during morning training....

Wahlrus:
.... Here [Wahlrus gave Flee his bow, all polished up and shiny] It needs to be
maintained from time to time. Strong as you are you will not be able to defeat
those who take care of their weapons.

Flee:
Yes Sir! Thank you very much!

Blood:
All right! Let's go!

[press Square to go to Red Frog's Pond and choose the first menu selection
遠征 to go on expedition. I recommend saving your game first セーブ]

[the following event occurs after defeating the monster in the Tsukimi Forest]

??? [mysterious woman]:
Seems like you gave it your best.

Blood:
You saw?

???:
Even if I didn't, I still know. The Golem Gang is truly becoming powerful.

Blood:
Hmm.... I didn't know you can smile.

???:
Is it odd?

Blood:
No, you look really nice when smiling, much nicer than the stiff face you
always had on.

???:
T-They're both my face.

Blood:
Well, yeah.

???:
? Why do you laugh? Did I say something funny?

Blood:
No... not really.... Hahahaha.

???:
That was quite rude, Blood Boal....
Anyway, do you remember? "In the Year of the Fire, the Disaster of Dark
Eternity will awake in the South. It will shatter the hills and before long
tint the entire Southern Continent with red."

Blood:
Not again....

???:
The disaster will strike in 1010. In that year, your town will be destroyed.
Following that, the Southern Continent will also face the same destruction.

Blood:
......

???:
The year 1010. Remember it!

[you are now free to roam about the world map, defeating monsters that show up
or go back to town so you can recruit young troops to replace the old ones.
hint: when recruiting choose troops with growth and peak performance age that
add up to more than ten years.]

[The following events are random story events until the Disaster in 1010. They
may occur on different dates in your game. Field events are the ones that
occur when you walk around the world map, and town events occur when you visit
certain parts of the town.]

<Year 1001, Day 1 - The Day of Blessing; field event>
Lily:
Blood, did you wash your hands? Today's the Day of Blessing. We'll have a nice
meal together with everyone.

Flee:
Wow! What a banquet!! Did you make all these?

Lily:
Don't mention it. These are just some local Barcway dishes. This one is cooked
in ushidori sauce, here's a little ratfish jelly, and this is spicy maple.

Blood:
Hey, what's this grass called?

Lily:
Oh! You've already started? Mr. Blood, you're sneaky!!

Blood:
Well, this grass looked really good, so....

Lily:
It's not a grass, it's mugwort fern salad.! Ah, don't spill it! Here, use the
napkin.

Garef:
Good grief, can't these guys greet the new year with a slightly more serious
attitude?

Wahlrus:
You're asking too much. We're talking about the Golem Gang after all. Generally
speaking, the elderly usually feel somewhat gloomy when welcoming the Day of
Blessing.

Garef:
The elderly, huh? You have my sympathies, Wahlrus.

Wahlrus:
!? Hey, look here, who said I was talking about myself? Idiot! [hits Garef]

Garef:
Ouch! That hit was for real! It hurts!

Blood:
Garef, it's new year, lighten up!

Garef:
Hmmph.

<explains aging, see section 6.3>
<end of event>

<Year 1003, Day 96 - field event>
Blood:
Flee, practicing again? It's good that you're training hard, but don't overwork
yourself.

Flee:
Yes, Sir, just a little more....

Blood:
Say, Flee. Mind if I ask why you want to join the Golem Gang?

Flee:
Heheh, Mr. Blood, do you know Tygor Valley (ディゴルの谷)?

Blood:
No.

Flee:
That's my hometown. It's a very small village, hardly anyone knows about it.
There are few residents there, and most of them are old folks. You can
probably meet everyone in one day. It's a peaceful little place where people
make their living by making wood crafts. That's why I wanted to leave the
village.

Blood:
Are there not enough resources in the village?

Flee:
No, Mr. Blood, just the opposite. I want to become stronger so I can protect
the village. I'm kind of embarrassed to say, but I want to be the one
protecting the village if something happens.

Blood:
I see.... Wahlrus has a very good student.

Flee:
Actually, I still have much to learn to repay master's kindness.

Blood:
"Oh! Really? I'm so happy!"

Flee:
?

Blood:
Isn't that how you would used to always reply?

Flee:
Oh come on, Mr. Blood, you're mean.

Blood:
Hahaha, you've really matured. I'll rely on you from now on.

Flee:
Yes, Sir!

<end of event>

<Year 1004, Day 21 - Main Street 中央通 ; town event>
Man from Barcray:
Hey, Golem Gang! My old lady made some bread for you. Please take them.

Lily:
That's a lot! How much do we owe you?

MfB:
They're free. How can I ask money from the Heroes of the town? My old lady
makes the best bread. Please enjoy!

Blood:
Thank you very much.

Lily:
Wow, they smell wonderful! If Wippel was here he would have made notes of it
for sure. Oh... sorry.

Blood:
That's all right.

Garef:
Hey, Blood, help me out here!
<Children are climbing all over Garef's shoulders, back, waist, and legs.>
These brats are so annoying that I can't patrol the streets in peace.

Lily:
Hee hee. Garef sure is popular with the kids.

Blood:
Probably because they look the same age.

Garef:
What?!

Lily:
Hahahahaha!

<end of event>

<Year 1004, Day 211 - field event>
Garef:
Nothing unusual around here.

Blood:
Oh, Garef, thanks for scouting.

Lily:
What should I do?! Blood. Garef! I saw a faerie.

Blood:
Hmmm.

Garef:
It was probably your eyes playing tricks on you.

Lily:
No, really! it was real!! It was a little shiny light flying around.

Blood:
Aren't faeries supposed to be attendants of spirits? Does that mean there's a
spirit around here?

Lily:
Eh? ... I didn't... see any spirits, but....

Garef:
See, it was just your eyes playing tricks after all.

Lily:
I told you it ws real! I'm going to look for it now, why don't you guys come
with me?

Blood:
I'd rather not. I have to think about where to place the new members of the
team.

Lily:
Oh, ok. The Golem Gang is expanding so you have a lot more work now, don't you?

Garef:
..........
Where was it?

Lily:
What?

Garef:
Where did you see the faerie? I'll go with you, just to prove that you're only
seeing things.

Lily:
Garef... thank you.

Garef:
There's no need to thank me. I'm just going to prove that you're only seeing
things.

Lily:
I know, but still... thank you.

<end of event>

<Year 1005, Day 58 - Cycle of Life; field event>
Wahlrus:
All right, that's good for today's training.

Flee:
I can still keep going.

Wahlrus:
But I am tired.

Flee:
Oh, sorry.

Wahlrus:
It's been five years since we met. Your skills have really increased. You can
repair your bow properly, but you still have to work on your timing.

Flee:
I still haven't gotten it down?

Wahlrus:
Your footwork betrays your fear. You must make windows of opportunities with
courage. A weak resolve will only be a danger to yourself.

Flee:
I see....

Wahlrus:
Is it difficult to understand? I'll make it easier then. A long time ago, there
was a young man your age in the Golem Gang. Despite coming from an unknown
tiny village, he was a hard-nosed little guy trying to become stronger than
everyone. He seldom paid attention to Blood's lessons, and acted as if he was
the captain of the team.

One day, a monster appeared in a cave. The young man broke off formation and
rushed ahead. Captain Blood asked him, "Do you truly have a strong and
determined resolve?" The young man didn't say anything, shrugged off Blood and
entered the cave.

The monster in the cave was the most vicious the young man has ever seen.
Staring at the monster, he could not move. He was paralyzed by fear of the
monster's thirst for blood. While the young man was overcome by the fear,
Blood rushed in. "Watch closely!" he called out and slashed at the monster in
front of the young man.

The monster sank its teeth into Blood's chest, and the two of them were held in
a deadlock, each not letting up a step. With blood gushing out of his chest he
once again taught the young man the lesson he's been teaching repeatedly -
"Timing is the key. Next is a determined resolve."

Flee:
That young man was....

Wahlrus:
A real fool! Teaching him almost took the life of the captain.

Flee:
Master....

Wahlrus:
There's a deep scar on Blood's chest that will never go away. That is called a
'debt.' It is a 'kindness' that he has given me. Therefore, I have to repay my
debt of gratitude to him. But my lifetime is not enough, so I have trained
you. Can I entrust you with this debt?

Flee:
Yes, Sir! I'm honoured!!

Wahlrus:
Well, all this sitting and talking is making me cold. Won't you have a match
with me?

Flee:
With pleasure!!

<end of event>

<Year 1005, Day 133 - Main Street; town event>
Guide of Nelgo:
We deeply thank you for siding with us in this journey.

Flee:
Well, actually....

GoN:
Born of the humans between heaven and earth, the exploits of your Golem Gang
are truly splendid.

Flee:
We're much obliged.

GoN:
I will now give you a modest little blessing by teaching you a dance.

Flee:
Huh?

GoN:
"The Guides of Nelgo" are formed with the approach of the Prophecies of Well-
Varius." Come! Raise your right hand and right foot together.

Flee:
Uh... well, I'm not very good at dancing so....

GoN:
Take a deep breath and wiggle your body. Yes! Wiggle~ Wiggle~

Flee:
No, wait.... Master! Please stop laughing and give me a hand!

Wahlrus:
HA-Hahaha! You're looking quite flexible there.

<end of event>

<Year 1006, Day 306 - field event>
??? [mysterious woman]:
Long time no see.

Blood:
What's so funny?

???:
? Why do you ask?

Blood:
Nothing, just that you're smiling.

???:
This... because you....

Blood:
Me?

???:
[serious again] No, it is nothing of significance. By the way, when will the
old soldier be relieved of his duty?

Blood:
I haven't thought about it yet.

???:
Half-sympathies will only lead you to a loss.

Blood:
It's not like I like working with losses and gains.

???:
If the old soldier stays in the Gang he will only bring misfortune to himself.

Blood:
Please don't say such things. What you say may sound reasonable, but Wahlrus is
a dear friend who's been with me a long time. I want him to stay a little
longer!

???:
... I can do nothing about this. Do as you like, Blood Boal.

Blood:
? You gave up pretty easily today.

???:
In truth, it is a pity. However, this time it is your responsibility to make
the decision.

Blood:
Why is that?

???:
.... Just do not regret what you have decided.

<end of event>

<Year 1007, Day 154 - field event> [gender division of labour, Lily has her
work cut out for her -_-; ]
Lily:
Finally, the laundry is done.

Garef:
Thank you. It must be hard work with so many team members.

Lily:
Yeah, but wouldn't everyone want to wear clean fresh-smelling clothes?

Garef:
I suppose.

Lily:
So, a nice sunny day like this is a perfect laundry day.

Garef:
The river water is cold. You should put on some cream to protect your hands.

Lily:
Oh, that's all right, I'm used to it.

Garef:
You should put on some cream.

Lily:
Yeah, yeah, okay.... tee hee.

Garef:
What?

Lily:
Nothing... tee hee hee.

<end of event>

<Year 1008, Day 311 - Continuation; field event>
Blood:
What is it that you need to talk to me about?

Wahlrus:
Blood.... I think it's about time I free myself from this team.

Blood:
!?

Wahlrus:
I know my limits. My strengths have left me. What a shame.... I am no longer
useful. I want to leave before I become a burden to everyone.

Blood:
That's not true! Just this morning you beat Flee to a pulp during training.

Wahlrus:
He was going easy on me.

Blood:
......

Wahlrus:
How ironic, as if somehow it's all a lie. He should have beaten me without
reservation... what a fool.

Blood:
That doesn't seem like something he'd do.

Wahlrus:
... I was simply taking advantage of the kindness of a young man. The Gang is
expanding. Flee is one of the first elite member to be brought up. Don't you
think now is a good time for me to retire?

Blood:
... but....

Wahlrus:
Rest easy, I have passed on all my skills and passion to Flee. I have trained
him well to protect you.

Blood:
Don't... don't speak of it so lightly!

Wahlrus:
Blood...?

Blood:
How can you say you are no longer useful? Repairing weapons, mediating fights
between teammates, identifying fruits and mushrooms for emergency rations...
there are still so many things that we depend on you.

Wahlrus:
But I....

Blood:
Please! Do it for me. Stay by my side. You are the only one who has been with
me through the entire history of the Golem Gang.

Wahlrus:
.... I am old.

Blood:
I'll bear your burden.

Wahlrus:
I am also getting forgetful.

Blood:
Flee will note things down for you.

Wahlrus:
And even if I forget your face?

Blood:
But you won't, that will never happen.

Wahlrus:
Have it your way then.

Blood:
We are in your care, Wahlrus.

<end of event>

<Year 1009, Day 67 - field event>
Lily:
It's been a while since we had a chat by ourselves.

Blood:
Yeah, there's always someone around all the time.

Lily:
Hee hee, it actually feels kinda lonely without people around.

Blood:
Really?

Lily:
At first, it was confusing to have so many people join at once. Now I'm really
happy living with everyone. Remember? I'm an orphan. I've always wanted to
sleep and eat with a large family under the same roof.

Blood:
I see.

Lily:
But... gradually....

Blood:
Gradually what?

Lily:
No, nothing.

Blood:
? It's always been a bad habit of yours to stop in the middle of saying
something.

Lily:
Sorry.

Blood:
But, it seems at least you've fixed your "what should I do" panic attacks.

Lily:
Guess I figured I had to somehow get over things. Say, Blood... it's already
been 20 years since we met.

Blood:
So it has, time sure flies.

Lily:
Yes, but... it's still a long time. Blood... I'm not getting any younger.

<end of event>

<Year 1010, Day 135 - the disaster; prophecy event>
[note: in the year when a prophecy is supposed to take place, you'll be
automatically warped to the place where it happens.]

***************
Even though not completely believing the words of the mysterious woman, Blood
nevertheless returned to the town in the year of the supposed "Disaster."
However, there was nothing unusual in the peaceful town of Barcway. There was
no threat of monster in the air. But, the event in Acral Year 999 has shown
that carelessness is to be avoided. Blood counted the days with great
agitation.
***************

Wahlrus:
You don't look too well. I noticed you've been getting paler. You should be
resting right now... is something on your mind?

Blood:
Not really. Garef's snores kept me up last night.

Wahlrus:
... Doesn't seem to me it's as simple as that.

<Blood hadn't told anyone about the mysterious woman and the Prophecies because
he wasn't sure of their validity. Furthermore, he didn't want his team mates
to become uneasy unnecessarily.

Flee ran in, breathless. Blood had a sudden uneasy feeling.>

Blood:
Hey, where's Garef?

Flee:
He went after... the monster... in Kuroko Mountain.

Lily:
By himself? That's crazy!

Flee:
He went there after a kid!! The kid was playing behind a house.... We heard a
cry... when we got there we saw her carried off by a monster towards the
mountains.

Blood:
And then Garef went after them by himself?

Flee:
Yes, he sent me back to report to you.

Lily:
... sounds like what Garef would do.

Blood:
We must leave right away and support Garef! Flee, please take us to the
mountains.

Flee:
Yes, Sir! Let's go everyone, we must get there as fast as we can.

<With a war cry the Golem Gang was ready to leave.>

???:
Blood Boal, wait!

Narrator:
Calling out behind Blood was the mysteriou woman. She had entered the hideout
while no one was paying attention.

Blood:
This is a really bad time, we're busy! Just as you said, a monster appeared.
If you want to talk it'll have to wait.

???:
You cannot make such an error. The monster in the Prophecy will appear right in
the town. Call back your people right away. Your commitment is to protect this
town.

Blood:
And ignore the monster on rampage? I can't do that!

???:
But an even more powerful monster will appear right here!

Blood:
But Garef and a kid are being attacked right now!

???:
Blood Boal, are you about to put the life of two humans ahead of the entire
town? That is an erroneous judgement.

Blood:
Shut up! I'm the captain of the Golem Gang and I must take care of its members.
As for the monster that will attack the town, I'll worry about that later.

Narrator:
Blood took off against the mysterious woman's warnings.

???:
......

***************
The Year of the Moon. The Year of the Fire. The rocky hills will be haunted by
decaying bats. And, in the Year of the Fire, the Disaster of Dark Eternity will
awake in the South. It will shatter the hills and before long tint the entire
Southern Continent with red.

The Disaster has arrived.
***************

<As they ran up the rock-strewn mountain pass, they saw Garef's broad back as
he faced the monster. Right away the Golem Gang got into formation.>

Lily:
Blood!

Blood:
Is the child ok?

Lily:
Yes, Garef stopped the monster from eating her. But she still can't escape.

Blood:
We have to defeat it. Divert the monster's attention away from the child.
<big shake and boom>
Wh-what?

<All of a sudden, the ground was shaken by a violent and horrible roar. From
whence the roar came, all one could see was blackness in the sky. Blackness
from the smoke as dark as the night.>

Blood:
That direction is....

Lily:
Barcway!? My town....

Blood:
Monster... in the town... it can't be!

<Lily looked at the monster in front of her teary eyes. In her sight, Garef's
broad back blended with the monster's shadow. Her lips pressed tightly.>

Lily:
Blood! At any rate we have to finish up here quickly.

Blood:
Understood!

<introduce monster ability "save strength." (see section 7) fight the giant>

Garef:
Fuuri. Everything's all right now.

Fuuri:
WAAAaaaaaah!

Garef:
Don't cry. You're safe now.

Fuuri:
Thank you Garef, I love you!

Garef:
Don't be reckless next time.

Lily:
The village, we have to get back!

Blood:
Lily, wait. You heard that roar. We shouldn't act carelessly. I'll send two
scouts agead. The rest of us will be right behind them.

Lily:
Who... will go first?

Blood:
Wahlrus! Garef! Collect information on the monster in town so I can set up our
formation. This is a dangerous mission, please be careful.

Wahlrus:
Understood!

Garef:
We won't let you down!

Wahlrus:
Flee. It's up to you now to bring up the rear.

Flee:
Yes, Sir!

Wahlrus:
Here, wear this.
<Wahlrus gave Flee a tiny bottle stuffed with dried Kugaibuna leaves.>
After Blood saved my life I collected these from the battle scene to keep as
a charm of of protection. It's to remind me of the lesson. Use it whenever
anger clouds your vision. It will calm you down.

Flee:
Thank you, Sir!

Wahlrus:
Do your best. I'll see you later.

Fuuri:
Mr. Captain. My mother is... alive, right?

Blood:
......

Lily:
Of course she is! Mrs. Yuriel will of course be all right. We are now going to
help her out. You better hide here for now, okay?

Fuuri:
.... okay....

Blood:
Right! Let's go!

<prompt to save>

<Barcway Main Street>

Narrator:
The town of Barcway was in ruins. Smoke rose here and there, and the streets
were filled with a foul stench. Only mere traces of the precious lives of the
townsfolks and their modest lifestyles remained. They were so easily destroyed
by the powerful monster. Suddenly, Blood had a dark ominous feeling.

Garef:
Wahlrus!

Blood:
It's Garef! Over here!

Narrator:
The Golem Gang rushed over, and what met their eyes was Wahlrus' hardened form
lying face down on the ground. Dark crimson blood flowed from under him. He was
already dead.

Flee:
.... Master? ....... Why!? Answer me please! Master!!

Dee:
HEE HEE HEE HEE HEE.... It's no use. Can't you tell he's dead?

??? [dark warrior]:
Dee, that is enough. Today's mission is complete. Let's go.

Dee:
Yes, Sir!

Flee:
You... did this to the town and to master?

???:
The destruction of the town cme from one blow from Nagzossal, the Disaster of
Dark Eternity. As for the old man, yes, it was I who took his life. His life
was coming to an end even if he had lived through today. So, it wouldn't have
made much difference anyway.

Flee:
WHAT!? Unforgivable.... I will avenge Master's death!

Blood:
Flee! WAIT!

Narrator:
Ignoring Blood, Flee charged at the man. Just then, Wahlrus' lesson flitted
through his mind - "Timing is the key. The next is a determined resolve." He
clutched the Kugaibuna charm that Wahlrus gave him. As he realised that his
actions were caused by fear and anger, he came to a sudden halt. At that
instant, the dark warrior's sword narrowly missed the tip of Flee's nose. Had
Flee not stopped himself he would have lost his life as well.

???:
Now do you realise the difference in our strengths? You would be a fool if you
only act on instincts. I commend you.

Flee:
......

Narrator:
Flee collapsed on the ground, and threw himself onto Wahlrus' body.

???:
Your greif is wasted at best.

Narrator:
With that, the man called down the dragon, and rode off into the sky.

Flee:
If I'm alive... If I'm lucky... Master....

Narrator:
Throughout the town there were people praying, crying, or simply staring in the
sky dazed and confused. Everyone in the Golem Gang cursed at their fate and the
hated monsters. Blood the Captain was no exception.

However, his anger was directed at himself. It was him who turned down Wahlrus'
request to retire. It was him who left the town despite the Mysterious Woman's
warning. The disaster was the result of his own decision, and the regret burned
at his heart.

Biting his lips, Blood took hold of his pale arm, and created a new tatoo - a
mark of remourse and sorrow for a fallen comrade.

Lily:
Blood. Where are you going?

Blood:
I'm going to have a look further inside the town. Perhaps... some people are
still alive....

Lily:
I'll come with you.

Blood:
No, I'll go by myself. Everyone, please stay by Wahlrus's side.

Lily:
...Yes.

<Blood worked his way through the rubbles towards the back of the town. He saw
a bright dazzling light that could not have come from the flames.>

Blood:
Light?

<As he set foot on a mound of ashes, a particularly bright light cut across
from the corner of his vision. Drawing an arc, the lihgt arrived in front of
Blood.

Looking at it carefully, it was shaped like a very small person with a pair of
rapidly beating clear insect wings on its back. It was sprinkling phosphorous
dust everywhere.>

Blood:
A faerie?

???:
Follow me.

<The faerie turned around and flew towards a brighter light. Blood followed
closely, and there he saw... a woman, enveloped by blinding light.>

???:
Do you believe in the Prophecies now?

Blood:
You....?

<Blood's confusion was not without reason. A pair of magnificent wings spread
from the back of the Mysterious Woman. She had an air of holy solemnity that
surpassed all humans.>

Blood:
You command a faerie.... So, that must mean you're a real spirit!?

??? [faerie]:
Hey! Don't be rude in front of the Goddess. Watch your mouth, human!
Lady Ariah, are you sure about this guy?

Ariah:
Yes, Feeny. He is Blood Boal, the chosen hero, the one to prevent the Prophecy
of Doom.

Blood:
The Prophecy of Doom? .... What do you mean?

<The Goddess Ariah read from the thick Book of Prophecies>

"In the Year 999

A monstrous evil will awaken from its slumber in the southern lands.
With the passage of time, the seeds of terror and despair will be sown
throughout the land.

And then, the entire world will die."

<begin short cut scene>
Ariah: "Battlefield Demon, Tragic Devil, God-Killer Blood."
Blood: "Why are you calling me by my names of long ago?"
Ariah: "Live forever!"
<end short cut scene>

Blood:
So it was you... Three hundred years ago...?

Ariah:
Those who drank the blood of a spirit will gain immortality... so it is said.

Blood:
Why did you help me?

Ariah:
You heard the Prophecy of Doom. The prophecised disasters began in the year
999 and continues now. Then, about a hundred years from now, the "Great
Destruction" will come.

Blood:
Will the world be destroyed?

Ariah:
It must be prevented at all cost. Blood Boal, the man possessing immortality.
You must fight. Fight throughout the next hundred years. Lead your team....

<The image of the man with the dragon re-emerged in Blood's mind, as did the
image the powerful Nagzososahl.>

Blood:
A hundred years... against those guys?

Ariah:
Blood, no one else but you can complete such a task. I implore you, rise up
against the Prophecies and re-create the future.

Blood:
...... ...... In these three hundred years I have made many friends. They all
aged and died. I am forever outside the limits of time. Preventing the
Prophecies of Doom... is such a grand goal to take on. Just a little bit...
maybe I can also join everyone in the flow of time.

<His fist clenched, body shaking, a drop of tear rolled down his pale face.>

Ariah:
Blood Boal. Take it! Take the Book of Prophecies.

<As Blood clutched the Book of Prophecies, Goddess Ariah said assuringly.>

Ariah:
This is the reason why you have lived three hundred years.

**********

Narrator:
The following day was a beautiful sunny day.

Flee:
Such a nice sunny day. Master... has always liked the sun.

<After the Golem Gang attended Wahlrus' funeral, Blood gathered everyone
together to announce his decision.>

Blood:
Attention everyone.

<Blood told them about the Book of Prophecies. Though they could not hide their
confusions in regards to the so-called Prophecies, yesterday's tragedy was
clearly written in the Book.>

Blood:
I have decided that I want to save this world by preventing the Prophecies
from happening. I will not allow the prophecised monsters to take any more
lives. The tragedy of Barcway and Wahlrus will not happen a second time.

The next disaster is prophecised to occur in the Roseberry Caves. I will leave
Barcway tomorrow morning. I'd like you all to join me.

Narrator:
Such a grand goal seemed too heavy a burden to be taken on even by the usually
optimistic crew of Golem Gang. As everyone stood quietly Garef slowly stepped
up.

Garef:
Blood.... Sorry, I can't go with you.

Blood:
What!?

Garef:
I must remain here. I have my own goals to fulfill.

Blood:
Garef.... Why? Why are you....

Lily:
I'm sorry Blood, but, we're staying.

Blood:
Lily, you too!?

Lily:
I have to take care of Fuuri.

Blood:
?... The kid carried off by the monster?

Lily:
Yes, she lost both her parents yeasterday. She's all by herself now. I know
full well how lonely it can be to not have a family.

Garef:
That's why we're adopting her. Besides, Fuuri isn't the only child.

Blood:
What do you mean?

Garef:
There's also a new life in Lily.

Blood:
I... see....

Lily:
Fighting to fix things for a hundred years into the future is such a great
thing to do. But... in this lifetime, I would really also like to see my
children grow up.

Garef:
Blood, please understand. We must bring back peace and quiet in this town in
order to raise a child here. So, we'll fortify Barcrway to prevent monsters
from destroying the town again.

Blood:
Sounds like fun. Seems to me the kids will be able to grow up strong and
healthy here. Your child would probably be a handful.

Lily:
Blood....

Blood:
Do your best. You know I'm always behind you.

Garef:
Forgive us. It's been lots of fun in the past twenty years. I've learned a lot
from you. Too bad I can't continue on with you.

Blood:
Lily, I'm happy for you.... Please raise a good family.

Lily:
Yes, but I'll never forget you and the Golem Gang. I will tell Fuuri and the
new baby stories of you.

Blood:
... yes.

Flee:
I suppose this is goodbye.

Blood:
Guess I should be used to it by now.

Flee:
.... Please rest now. I will find out the directions for Roseberry by tomorrow
morning.

Blood:
All right Flee, I'll leave things to you then.

Flee:
Sure! I'll be with you all the way.

Narrator:
The next morning, everyone from the Golem Gang arrived at the meeting place.
No one was certain what kind of hardship they would face. However, a brightness
shone in everyone's eyes in anticipation of what was to come.

Flee:
Mr. Blood! Why don't we change our name from 'Gang' to 'Knights.' It's only
appropriate for such a great task we're undertaking.

Blood:
Whatever name is fine by me.

Flee:
Yeah... but....

Lily:
Come on, Blood! It's a new beginning. Try think of a good name for the knights.

<create a new name for the team> [I named my team 'Redfrog.' When 'Redfrog' is
referred to later in the FAQ just replace it with your team's name]

Hmm... Redfrog, cool name!

Blood:
Really?

Lily:
Yeah. Redfrog, please take care of yourselves.

Narrator:
And just like that, Blood and company bid Lily and Garef farewell and began
their journey. Lily kept waving her hand even as Blood went beyond her sight.

<begin cut scene>

"They walked.
They took full on the magnificent mountains, the gentle rains, and the severe
winds.
They walked.
Towards a hundred years into the future."

<end cut scene>

__5.4 - CHAPTER IV - RESOLUTION__

<Year 1011, Day 225, Southern Acral - Roseberry Road>

Flee:
We should be able to see the cave just a bit further down this road.

Blood:
At last, we're here.

[noise of something falling]

Flee:
......!
Who goes there!? Come out!

<As Flee leveled his bow towards the bush a big man jumped out. He cried out
with a gentle voice unbefitting his brawny frame.>

???:
Wait, wait, wait! I'm not your enemy!!

Blood:
.... So it seems.

Olga:
My name is Olga. And this is... hey? Hey! This guy here's Leo. And, Miletta...
oh, my Miletta....

Leo:
Can't you make a little more sense when you talk? That's so not cool.

Olga:
No, I'll search for her. I'll get her back! My very, very, very, very, very
precious....
And... you guys, who are you? Are you bandits?

Blood:
Presently, we're the Redfrog Knights.

Olga:
Oh! Well why didn't you say so earlier? Please help Miletta! She was captured
by a monster. So, will you help us? Knights are supposed help out people in
need, right?

<Prompt to help Miletta or not: a) agree b) decline>
<Olga will just keep begging until you say yes>

Blood:
Okay. We would help you even if we weren't knights. It's natural to help people
in need.

Olga:
Thanks! Please follow us, we'll guide you there.

Leo:
Why do I have to go?

Olga:
You were the one who took too long to decide which white roseberry to pick in
the first place. It was an easy job. The monster wouldn't have come if you
hadn't taken so long.

Leo:
Hey, I'm just taking pride in my work. We can't just do a crappy job!

Blood:
........ Anyway, shall we go?

<Olga the Barbarian and Leo the Adventurer joins party>
<Olga and Leo briefly explain the ability of their professions>

<Go fight the monsters, choose the first option 移動 to move>

[summary of the conversation before the first fight: Blood learned that Olga,
Miletta, and Leo are from the Water City of Sculea and the trio is called
"Team Olga." It wasn't Leo's choice to join the group (they're not cool). But,
since no other groups had a spot open, the Guildmaster put him with Olga and
Miletta. So he kind of just got stuck with them.]

<after 1st battle, before 2nd battle>

Olga:
Sir Knight, you sure are strong! Sir Knight's team is also strong. It was
really an eye opener.

Blood:
You're not so bad yourself.

Olga:
Hmm? R-really!? I guess so, heh heh heh....

Leo:
This isn't the time to feel proud from a flattery.

Olga:
! You're right!! We have a crisis here!! Oh, Miletta, please be all right!
My lovely lovely Miletta.

Leo:
Man, not cool.

<fight battle 2>
<after battle>

Olga:
Miletta, where are you? What if, what if the monster already....

Blood:
So let's hurry!

Olga:
Oh, right, of course. I have to believe in myself. Heyyy! Miletta~~!

<before 3rd battle>

Leo:
Crap! One after another. There's no end to this.

Flee:
Don't get so agitated, young man. Monsters are just what they are. Don't give
up, cast away your fear and anger and calmly face what's in front of you.

Leo:
That's a bunch of crap!
Wat if I can't do it? My weapon doesn't have the power of a sword or a bow!

Flee:
You can do it even with a harp. If you don't want to die, then learn.

Leo:
...........

<fight 3rd battle>
<after battle>

???:
Hey! Heeeeyy!

Olga:
It's Miletta, let's go!

<move to the final battle>

Olga:
Miletta! Are you okay?

Miletta:
So it was decided, eh? I was to be reduced to Usnoro's prey?

Olga:
No.... As long as you're okay. You're okay... okay....

Miletta:
Olga! You're repeating yourself again.
Right after I got separated from you I dazed the monster with magic. While it
was confused I ran into this cave to hide. The Elixir of Shirule managed to
cover my scent.
.... Olga, I knew you'd come for me. I wasn't scared at all.

Olga:
Oh, Miletta! You're so adorable. Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes...

<monster roar!>

Blood:
Hey, are you all right?

Olga:
Wh-what was that?

Blood:
It's a monster from the Prophecy. Our scent must have awakened it.

Miletta:
What prophecy? What's going on?

Blood:
I'll explain later! If this thing gets out it will destroy crops all over the
world. It'll eat the world to ruins! We must keep it from getting out!

Miletta:
I don't know what's going on, but it looks pretty bad. I'll lend you a hand!
I won't lose to Usnoro!

Olga:
Ah, hey wait! Miletta!! I'm not running away this time!! Wait for me!!

Blood:
Were you thinking about running away?

Leo:
No way! I'll never do something so not cool.

Blood:
Well then, join us in the battle.

<Miletta briefly explain witch's abilities>

<fight, win>

Flee:
Mr. Blood... we did it!

Blood:
Yeah, for the time being we've averted one of the disasters.... I think. Thanks
to those three for their help.

Flee:
Yes.... If it's possible, I'd like them to join us.

Miletta:
Okay now, what's this Prophecy thing all about? And by the way, who are you
guys?

Olga:
P-please excuse her Sir Knight. Miletta has always had a sharp toungue.
She's... short... on polite words.

Blood:
Don't worry about it, Olga. Now, Miletta, it's a long story. If I tell you now
everyone will starve to death. Why don't we look for a safe place where we can
eat and take our time to talk.

Miletta:
Not a bad suggestion.

Narrator:
Blood and company found a safe place with a good look-out. They started a fire
and put on some dried meat to roast, and melted some cheeze on it when it got
hot. This is a feast considering the limited amount of food they brought with
them in their travel.

As the warm food pass through their throats, they all smiled with relief as
they were once again reaffirmed of their sense of living. It was in this
atmosphere that Blood told Miletta and Olga the story of the Prophecy. Even
Leo, who turned away pretending not to care, was obviously listening closely.

Miletta:
So, the Prophecy of Doom predicts the "Great Destruction," eh?
This whole thing sounds like the story of the Eternal Witch.

Blood:
The Eternal Witch?

Miletta:
The Great Witch that opened the red door and did the horrid task of drinking
all the blood down to the very last drop, thus releasing the seal and granting
her great magical powers....
Well, it's just a silly boogeyman tale used to discipline children.

Blood:
"If you don't go to bed the Great Witch will come get you!"... like that?

Miletta:
Right, right! Also "where is the witch flying on her broom now?"
Even if she's a real witch, she's still only a human. Probably just someone
brilliant enough with the skills and knowledge to survive.

Blood:
Miletta.... Will you lend us your brilliant skills?

Miletta:
! Are you really serious abot stopping the Prophecy of Doom?

Blood:
The Prophecy is not some wild tale I made up. Even if you dont like it, Come
with us and you'll soon understand.

Miletta:
So, you're quite the hard sell, eh? .... Olga! Olga! What do you think?
Whatever you decide is fine by me.

Olga:
Me?.... Well, the guild has been fun,... but at one time, I also wanted to see
what it's like to be a knight. That's it then, didn't Sir Knight say to help
people in need?

Miletta:
So it's decided! Leo! Team Olga officially disbands today. Tell the boss, and
find yourself some new partners.

Leo:
That Miletta! Always having her way and ordering people about....

Flee:
Doesn't that work out well for you? you said you didn't want to be in their
group in the first place.

Leo:
......

Flee:
Even though you say you're sick and tired of them, in the end you still want to
stay with them. The relationship between you and them is more than you think.

Leo:
What the hell does that mean?

Flee:
You have become friends.

Leo:
N-No way! Who'd want to be friends with those fools....

Flee:
Won't you join us too?

Leo:
Stop it. Are you kidding me? I'm not very strong, and can't even weild a sword.
You just want me around to carry everyone's luggage.

Flee:
It's no use comparing a sword with a musical instrument. You'll fight in the
ways you know. I'd really like you to join us, Leo.

Leo:
Again with the same old script? That is SO uncool!
............
.... Promise me. Make me stronger....

Flee:
Of course! It's a promise!!

Narrator:
And thus, the team celebrated the joining of three new members. Miletta and
Olga sang hopelessly out of tune attempting to cheer Leo up. Leo sang, his
clear delicate voice and the sound of his harp filled the air and rose up to
the blue sky. The three mended their past and looked forward to a better
tomorrow. Seeing this, Blood nodded with satisfaction. He left the others in
their merriment and went out for a walk alone.

Feeny:
So, there ARE humans who can sing "properly."

Blood:
That's Leo, the team's new comrade.

Feeny:
Comrade? So he's not just a new "pawn"?

Blood:
.... How's Ariah? Isn't she here today?

Feeny:
Don't you be on such familiar terms with the Goddess!

Ariah:
Feeny, calm down.

Feeny:
... Hmph!

Ariah:
I am grateful, Blood Boal. The disaster was prevented.

Blood:
Aw, don't mention it. Besides, we did it to help the world.

Ariah:
Needless sympathies are unacceptable. It is a waste of time.

Blood:
Excuse me?

Ariah:
I will forgive your management of human resources this time. However, do be
more selective from now on.

Blood:
I didn't help Miletta out for that reason.

Ariah:
All right. Show me the Book of Prophecy.

Blood:
? Okay.... what for?

Narrator:
As Blood held out the Book of Prophecy, the Goddess Ariah lowered her head and
mumbled softly. The Book of Prophecy rose from Blood's hands and floated with
light. The cover opened and the pages flipped even though there was no wind.
It reached the page of the prophecy just encountered. The words of the prophecy
began to float as if they are on water and peeled themselves off the page.

Then, rays of light shot through the clouds and dissolved all the words.
Silence followed this spectacular scene. As the Goddess returned the book,
Blood saw only a blank white page where the prophecy used to be written.

<By preventing the disaster, the poem in the Book of Prophecy has been changed.
I am not going to translate the change right now, but I may later.>

Ariah:
The future now has one more ray of hope. All thanks to your efforts.

Blood:
.... Whoa.... That was amazing. You *are* indeed a Goddess.

Feeny:
Lady Ariah, are you going to let him get away with such blasphemy? Humans
shouldn't be so casual with a goddess....

Ariah:
Feeny, calm down. It is quite all right. Blood, we will be going now. I will
look forward to your exploits in the future. When it is necessary, you will see
us again.

Blood:
All right.

Ariah:
Finally, those three you just recruited....

Blood:
What about them?

Ariah:
... Examine their potentials carefully.

Narrator:
[Here the narrator gives a summary of the story so far in beautiful flowery
Japanese. Since it's just a summary, I won't bother translating it.]

<Year 1011, Day 235 - The Water City of Skulea>

Narrator:
Guided by Miletta, the Knight Squad arrived at the Water City of Skulea
(スクーレ). According to the Book of Prophecy, disasters will befall this area
in the next few years.

As they walked in the darkened streets, no one knew what their fate may be.
Under the moon light, the canals surrounding the streets flowed quietly.

Blood:
It's so quiet here, isn't it....

Miletta:
Don't look around like a tourist. Walk straight ahead and keep your sight in
front of you! Don't stick your neck into backstreets and alleys if you don't
want anything to happen to you.

Blood:
What do you mean by that?

Miletta:
Skulea is actually a pretty shady place.

Leo:
People here are always trying to scam each other, especially outsiders. Just be
careful.

Olga:
Well, otherwise this place isn't all that bad. Strength and money can solve
pretty much everything here. It's rather refreshing, no?

Blood:
I see.... I think I know what you mean.

<bump>

Sneaky Thief:
Oops. Sorry about that.

Olga:
Damn drunk! Watch where you're going!

Miletta:
Olga, everything all right?

Olga:
Hmm? Yeah, of course. That was just a little bump.

Miletta:
No, you moron! Check your valuables!

Olga:
Oh yeah. Looks like my wallet's still here, nice and safe.

Miletta:
What about "that thing"?

Olga:
"That thing"? ... Oh? Ohh! Oooohhh crap.

Miletta:
geez....

Olga:
Just, just wait right here. I'll get it back! Damn! Where that drunk go?

<at the tavern, Olga found the man>

Olga:
You bastard! How dare you pick my pocket!

Sneaky Thief:
I told ya I don't know what the hell yer talking about, ya dimwit!

Olga:
D-d-d-dimwit!? Why you... I'll teach you....

<A fight ensued. The man pulled out his sword. But Olga knocked it off with his
bare hands. Chairs and tables were knocked down, bottles broken, and the floor
dented.>

Flee:
Leo! We have to stop this!

Leo:
Stop this? Can you possibly be so serious? This is just one little quarrel,
they happen all the time. Itユll be fine if you just leave it alone.

Flee:
Is that so? But still....

<Just as Leo said, aside from a few half-hearted boos and jeers, most patrons
went about their own business and drinking. However, two of the man's friends
stood up and joined in the fight. Things were not looking good for Olga.>

Leo:
Uh-oh, turns out that guy's a member of the Gurubom Gang. That's not too good.

Blood:
Gurubom?

Leo:
They are part of the organization called "Naraku." They'd do anything for a
price - the same lot as assassins and mercenaries.

<Just as Blood was about to intervene, the thief and his friends took down big
Olga. Olga crashed into a table in a recess of the bar. He was surprised and
could not move.>

Miletta:
Olga!

??? [woman in big hat]:
A-aaa.... My precious hat got spilt with cheap beer.... Let's see one hundred
thousand gouto should cover for compensation. Hey you, are you listening? Oh
dear, he's passed out.

<The woman rose from her chair, the thin heel of her boot stepping on Olga's
stomach as she climbed over him.>

???:
Well then, you guys must be the ones who threw him. Since there are three of
you... each of you must compensate me forty thousand gouto for ruining my hat.
I'll even let you pay in instalment.

Sneaky Thief:
What a mouthy wench. Look sister, who do ya think you are? See this sword I'm
holding?

???:
Of course I see your sword. It's so dirty, and dull too! Aren't you embarrassed
waving such a thing around?

Sneaky Thief:
What da hell? I won't go easy on a woman!

???:
Fine then, prepare to throw your life away.

Sneaky Thief:
W-What?

???:
Once you draw your sword, you must prepare to throw away your life.

Blood:
Oi!

<Before Blood could do anything, the woman has already knocked down the men
with great speed. No one could tell how she did it. She had only a staff in her
hand. Did she drug them? Other weapons? Or simply bare hands? How did she move
so fast? The woman dusted her coat, and poured herself another drink as if
nothing has happened.>

Blood:
Are you all right? My name is Blood Boal, I'm the captain of this knight squad.
Sorry about my teammate earlier.

???:
Hmm... You often get into fights don't you? Seems as if... you have hundreds of
years of experience behind you.

Blood:
... very perceptive. I do have those experiences.

???:
Eh? Then, you must be... immortal?

Blood:
Y-yeah....

???:
[smiles] so that's it! You can't die!

Blood:
[puzzled] .....?

???:
That's great news!

Miletta:
Olga, it's no use. We've searched all their pockets. I give up. It's gone for
good.

Olga:
No! I'll find it. I'll get it back! My very, very, very, very, very precious...
Should be in one of these guys' pocket, why can't I find it?

???:
By the way, Blood. Where will you be staying tonight?

Blood:
Actually, I don't know.

Miletta:
Hold it right there! Who do you think you are? I can take care of our lodging,
so it's none of your concern, missy!

???:
[pretends she didn't hear] Anyway, it looks like you'll be staying for a while,
right? I know a great place to stay. So how about it?

Miletta:
Hey!

Blood:
Is this place big enough to accomodate all of us?

???:
Of course.

Blood:
Okay then, let's go.

Miletta:
Blood, wait!! I'm very against this! Very very very VERY against it! How can
you trust a stranger like her? It's dangerous! She could be planning to
backstab us!

<Glaring at Miletta, the woman took out a pendant made of pure gold>

???:
Lookee here, there's something engraved on this-
"To my dearest Olga. Love, Miletta."
Why, it's a present for your boyfriend. Even you have an adorable side.

Miletta:
G-G-Give that back!

???:
Oh, how horribly disgraceful. How did that filthy thief get his hands on this?

Miletta:
Well, he stole it!

???:
Oh my... pure gold, comes in pairs, right?

Miletta:
That belongs to Olga! Give it back! NOW!

???:
There's no need for you to bark like that. I'll give it back, there. Now, in
return, just trust me, and come with me.

Miletta:
Hmph!

Vivid:
My name's Vivid. A great pleasure to meet you, Blood! Tee hee! Oh, hello to the
rest of you too.

Blood:
......

Vivid:
Well then, let's get out of here. C'mon!

__5.5 - CHAPTER V - ANGELS OF THE SLUM__

**********
Guided by Vivid, Blood and company walked through the late night streets of
Skulea. Vivid seemed to know like the back of her hand the streets and alleys
that even Olga and Miletta didn't know about. Vivid's delicate back seemed to
be filled with indescribable power as she walked. Such was the "presence" of
those who have surpassed all pandemonium.
**********

Miletta:
Blood, we still shouldn't trust her too much. She seems to know everything
about me. I have a feeling that woman is trouble.

Blood:
......

Olga:
Really? She gave us back the pendant, she's good looking, and she seems nice
enough. What's wrong with her?

Miletta:
This is just SO like you. Haven't you been paying attention?

Olga:
I know, I know. You're the only one in my heart. My only only only....

Miletta:
Oh stop it! Enough of that out of you!

[change scene]

Vivid:
So how many years have you lived anyway?

Blood:
Around 300 years or so... I lost count.

Vivid:
Wow.... Being around for so long, the formation of your team must've changed
quite a bit, no?

Blood:
Yeah, it has. Everyone comes and goes.

Vivid:
So, have you ever thought about stuff like going solo?

Blood:
Not really. I don't feel so lonely when I'm with everyone.

<So, without knowing it, Blood showed his true feelings. He sensed something
familiar with Vivid. There's something about her "presence" that was very
nostalgic and calming.>

[change scene - stone building]

Vivid:
Okay, we're here. The building is a bit old, but it's still comfortable.

Miletta:
What do you mean "a bit"? This place is practically falling apart.

Vivid:
Well now, then it's up to you to keep things together, eh, Miss Witch?

Miletta:
Hmph!

Vivid:
Okay Blood, see you later! Oh, and everyone too, be well!

Leo:
You're... going?

Vivid:
Well, yeah. This is the Knight Squad's headquaters now, isn't it?

Leo:
You're not going to join us? You are very powerful. It's the first time I've
seen such skills.

<Vivid threw Blood a challenging look. Her lips raised into a smile.>

Vivid:
Nah! I like the freedom of being by myself. Bye for now!

Blood:
Okay, thanks for everything.

Vivid:
!... Wait, I take that back! Wouldn't it be the greatest if it was just me and
Blood, just the two of us? Tee hee hee. Well, good night.

Leo:
...... What was that all about. Weird woman!

Blood:
Completely....

<Although, the building Vivid arranged was quite old, it was also a fairly
serene place.>

Olga:
Man, I didn't even know this place exists. It's so quiet, a really nice place
to sleep in. Miletta? Miletta? What are you doing?

Miletta:
I'm checking out the building's structural integrity. It needs to be fixed up
a bit, clean out the rust.... Oh, foolish me, how could I have admitted defeat
to that woman! I must show her the true strength of a witch!

Olga:
H-Hey, Miletta!? We can't stop now, we still need to fix this up.

Miletta:
Olga! Do you believe her more than you believe me?

Olga:
I didn't say that....

Leo:
... Still the same old stupid bickering.

Flee:
Ha ha ha, that's the true sign of friendship. By the way, Leo, show me your
harp.

Leo:
Oh, this...?

Flee:
I see.... It's well tuned, but fairly scratched up.

Leo:
Well, as long as it's good enough to play.

Flee:
Fool! The harp is your musical instrument, but is it not also your weapon?
Strong as you are you will not be able to defeat those who take care of their
weapons. Remember that!

Leo:
.... Yes, sir.

Flee:
Here, let me show you how to repair it.

Leo:
Okay.

Flee:
Your weapon is your life. Keep it by your side even as you sleep.

Leo:
That is so not cool.... I-I mean, yes, sir.

Flee:
That's good.

Narrator:
And so, their first night in Skulea was finally over. However, just as they
were resting in their deep slumber....

<Bell ringing loudly>

<subchapter: The Forgotten>

Olga:
What!? What's going on? Eeeek! Is this building collapsing?

Miletta:
Olga, stop sleeptalking! How long have you lived in Skulea? It's the clock
tower ringing!!

Leo:
But.... Isn't it strange? The bell of the clock tower shouldn't be ringing at
this time of the night.

<The water clock on top of the Tower of Sil has never been wrong. However, it
was the first time in Skulea's history that the bell rang like this in the
middle of the night.>

Blood:
Is this a bad omen?

<The Knight Squad grabbed their weapons and headed for the clock tower. On the
way, there were people on the street cursing the tower that has disturbed their
sleep.>

Skulea Man:
Hey, where are you guys going?

Blood:
We're just going to check out....

SM:
Check out the Tower fo Sil? Don't bother! Leave it to the caretaker there.

Blood:
The caretaker? There's someone living in the clock tower?

SM:
Whatever, do what you want. Just don't bring disaster to Skulea.

Blood:
Hey Leo, what did he mean by that?

Leo:
The city has always depended on water for its livelihood. Be it good or bad.
This city cannot escape the limits of water. The clock tower represents the
foundation of the entire city. Both in hapiness and... misfortune.

Blood:
But isn't someone living there?

Leo:
...You'll see when we get there.

Blood:
....?

***************
The Tower of Sil was surrounded by a heavy air of uneasiness. The entire
building seemed to cast an unsettling aura to keep people away.
***************

Olga:
Oooh.... This is scary! Boss said to never come here at night.

Miletta:
So what! We're not in the Skulea Guild anymore. We're part of the Red Frog
Knights, so we follow the captain now. [blushes] Come on Olga, give me your
hand. We'll always be next to each other.

Olga:
Ah.... You're embarrassing me. I'm so so so embarrassed.

Leo:
Look at those two... so not cool....

Flee:
... Leo? Wanna hold my hand?

Leo:
No, you idiot! I'm not scared!!

Flee:
No? But you're trembling.

Leo:
......

<As they approached the clock tower, a young woman walked out from within.>

???:
Please go back.

Blood:
Are you the caretaker? The bell seemed to be acting up, so....

???:
The Bell of Sil has... stopped for now. It will be all right. Please go back.

Narrator:
The girl's speech was fragmented and her breaths shallow. Her delicate features
remained emotionless.

???:
Please go back.

Leo:
Are we done now? Let's go home for the night!

Blood:
But, this girl....

Olga:
I think she'll be fine. It's her job. I mean, she's been around for a few
hundred years.... oh....

Blood:
Few hundred years? ... This girl is immortal? Just like me???

Olga:
Well... not exactly. She's always had this weird thing about her....

Blood:
......

Leo:
[hits Olga] That was NOT cool!

Narrator:
Blood sent everyone back, and walked to the outskirt of the city by himself. He
thought about what Olga has said and chuckled to himself.

Blood:
Immortal.... However you think about it, it's just humanly impossible, so of
course it's weird.

Feeny:
[said something about being human, but I just can't understand it.]

Blood:
Feeny... you're actually in a good mood today?

Feeny:
Well, I don't completely dislike humans.

Ariah:
Has the "caretaker of the clock tower" been on your mind?

Blood:
Caretaker...? Oh, you mean that girl... uh, not really....

Ariah:
Even if she is immortal? Even if she was born around the same time you were?
Blood Boal, sometimes you are very bad at lying.

Blood:
Can't lie in front of a goddess I guess.

Ariah:
Is that so? Then listen well. Just how long do you plan to carry this heavy
burden on your shoulder?

Blood:
What do you mean?

Ariah:
That which is forbidden on the battle field - cowardice... and fear. Such
feelings can spread to the rest of your team. You should resolve it quickly.

Blood:
Resolve it.... Who are you to tell me?

Ariah:
I am Goddess. I see everything.

Blood:
... I got it! When I saw that girl at the clock tower, I thought there was
something familiar about her. Right, she was just like you, having absolutely
surpressed all emotions and expressions.

Ariah:
Blood Boal.... Control yourself. I do not take pity upon humans.

Feeny:
Right! Right! Humans and Lady Ariah are not the same!

Blood:
Sorry.

Ariah:
Blood... seems like you need further affirmation to the degree of danger this
world is in. Here, take this.... <Ariah gave Blood a small brass balance>
It is the Balance of Spirits. The Balance will tip towards the negative when
monsters ravage this world. You must prevent the world from destruction by
challenging the monsters. Once you defeat a monster, the Balance will tip
towards the positive. Keep this close to you Blood, as you must maintain the
Balance in the positive. I wish you good luck. [see "safety meter" in section
6.3]

Feeny:
Don't get yourself killed in the slum. You have an obligation to Lady Ariah.

Blood:
Yeah, yeah.... [to self] It's not like I can die anyway....

[the next day]

Blood:
Phew.... I'm feeling restless. I should go out and have a look around.

[press square to choose different places to visit. You will see some events. I
will summarize the more significant ones:]

[Event 1 - You'll bump into a drunkard who talks some drek to you. Then a
warrior shows up and laugh at Olga for joining the so-called "Knights." Olga
gets depressed and began self-doubt. Miletta comforts him.]

[Event 2 - Someone tells you a story of the Dragon Gods. The Dragon Gods served
the Spirits and were extremely loyal servants. However, the Dragon Gods and
Spirits fell in love, which was not allowed between master and servants. The
Great Spirit was angered by this transgression and tried to break their love.
Four Dragon Gods were captured and banished to earth. The older sister was
thrown to the desolate planes, the younger brother was sent to the frozen
lands, the father was condemned to the firy mountain, and the mother was driven
to the poisoned jungle.]

[Event 3 - A mysterious informant tells you about summoning spirits. See
SUMMONING SPIRITS in section 6.3 for details]

[Event 4 - Someone tells you about love and marriage. See RELATIONSHIPS in
section 6.3]

[Event 5 - Dark Guild "Naraku." A dark monk talks about the Dark Guild, which
offers high-risk, high-pay jobs. People who work here are mercenaries only
caring about money and themselves.]

[Eventually Vivid will show up]

Vivid:
Why, it's Blood. Well? Have you gotten acquainted with the streets of Skulea?

Blood:
Hello, Vivid.

Vivid:
Heehee. You remember my name. So you really fancy me, don't you?

Blood:
......

Vivid:
Awe, what's with that look? I was just joking. Still, I must say, human hearts
are fickle. You should pay attention?

Blood:
Pay attention?

Vivid:
Yeah! All those people you lead. They form friendships, fall in love... getting
married, have kids.... As the captain, you have to look after all of them.
That's why I'd rather be by myself and carefree. Anyway, I was on my way to run
some errands. I'll see you later!

Feeny:
Weird woman. Knows about your immortality, and seems to revel in trouble.

Blood:
Feeny, what are you doing here?

Feeny:
What am I doing here? The same thing you are, to serve Lady Ariah, of course!

Blood:
Ariah?

Feeny:
Don't use that kind of tone with me. Ah, whatever, Lady Ariah asked me to show
you around.

[Feeny proceeds to take Blood around, blabbing about RELATIONSHIPS and RUMOURS
(see section 6.3). All the while getting impatient and pissed off with Blood.
Finally, Feeny takes Blood to the forest on the outskirt of the city, where
you can save game, begin expedition, see Ariah, etc. Ariah shows up, and
admonish Blood for being careless and leaving the Book of Prophecy back at the
headquarters.]

[scene change - headquarters - Ariah reads the next poem in the Book of
Prophecies in pretty flowery Japanese. I'm not translating it because it is too
time consuming. I might come back and translate all the prophecies when the
entire FAQ is done though. Suffice to say the next prophecy will occur six
years later in 1017. Ariah also explains the GESTALT BOARD (see section 6.3).]

[Now you can FINALLY save your game, about bloody time too. Just go to the
forest to see Ariah and save. Then you get to go on expedition and wander
around the world map waiting for monsters to show up!]

[While on expedition remember to go back to Skulea from time to time so you can
save, check teammates' RELATIONSHIPS, listen to RUMOURS and recruit new members
at the TAVERN.]

[From time to time, when you wander around the fields or around the streets in
Skulea, events will occur. I will list them in the order as they appeared to
me.]

<Year 1012, Day 80 - Event in Main Street of Skulea>

??? [cleric girl]:
Um.... Excuse me, can you show me the way to the Skulea Guild? I want to hire
someone to collect some white roseberries.

Leo:
Walk straight from here and you'll see the sign for the Guild.

???:
Thank you very much. My name is Filshia ( フィルシア ), from the monastery.
It's my first time in the city.

Blood:
Where's the monastery?

Filshia:
It's in the Reminton ( レミントン ) Mountains, a very beautiful place. Oh, and
to show my gratitude, here are some mountain vegetables that I picked.

Blood:
Don't mention it, really. You don't have to.

Leo:
Sure, don't mind if we help ourself to some of your veggies.

Blood:
Hey!

Filshia:
That's all right. I brought these veggies to barter with in the first place.

Blood:
Thanks very much.

Leo:
These look yummy....

Filshia:
Hee hee hee. You can boil them, stir fry, or add them to soup. These are also
the favourite food of the Caretaker of the Clock Tower.

Blood:
Caretaker? You've given her mountain veggies before?

Filshia:
Yes.... Is it strange?

Leo:
It's just that she seems very aloof and unpleasant.

Filshia:
We from the monastery treat everyone in this world the same way.

Blood:
... I wish I can do the same.

Filshia:
Well, I must be off. May you all have the blessing of the Spirits.

Leo:
Hey... watch out for hoodlums.

Filshia:
Hee hee hee. Thanks for your advice.

Blood:
What a nice person.

Leo:
The nuns of the monastery are simple folks and fairly naive. They bear no ill
will to most people.

Vivid:
Oh my, the little boy actually said something nice for a change.

Leo:
Wha-What the hell? Where did you pop up from?

Vivid:
[said something I didn't understand]... Blood! How are you? I missed you!!

Blood:
Ah, uhh... Hello.

Vivid:
You should come hang out at the tavern sometime. I'll treat. Okay, see you
there later!

Leo:
See? This place is full of people like her. That's why I was worried about the
nun.

Blood:
Indeed.
<end of event>

<Year 1012, Day 129 - Event>

Blood:
Thanks to Miletta and Olga's renovation efforts, our HQ is now like new!

Olga:
Well.... It was pretty easy with Miletta doing the planning.

Miletta:
And Olga's skill with the hammer is the best in the world!

Blood:
Great job you two, now I have one more favour to ask. The Clock Tower is really
old and looks like it could use a face lift. Can you spare some free time to
fix it?

Olga:
C-C-Clock Tower? B-but it's scary there.

Blood:
But if we leave it like that and let it fall apart, wouldn't it cause quite a
stir? Besides, no one else would do it....

Olga:
But can't we just leave it to the Caretaker to do it?

Blood:
A little girl like her can't do it all by herself.

Olga:
A little girl! She's been alive for hundreds of years....

Miletta:
[whacks Olga] All right, I'll do it!

Olga:
Miletta!?

Miletta:
As the Captain said. A renovation is necessary. Besides, I think it's about
time we all get to know the Caretaker better. So we ought to talk to her.

Olga:
But... why wouldn't she try to get to know us or other people by herself?

Miletta:
That's why we have to fix that! Just like we have to fix the building!

Blood:
Thanks, Miletta.

Miletta:
No problem! Olga! Give me the hammer if you're not going to use it.

Olga:
But.... Oh, this is bad. Bad bad bad.

Miletta:
What?

Olga:
...... I'll go with you.

Miletta:
Captain, what do you think? My lover boy is great, eh?

Blood:
But of course!

<end of event>

<Year 1012, Day 214 - Event>

Miletta:
At last! the outer wall is almost done.

Olga:
Even just using the time between fighting monsters, we're making good progress.

??? [Caretaker]:
......

Miletta:
Oh? You're awake? Sorry about all this racket this early in the morning.

???:
.... Why?

Miletta:
We are members of the Redfrog Knights. The Captain insisted we help fix this
place up.

???:
......

Olga:
Do you remember our names?

???:
.... Olga... Miletta... Redfrog Knights.

Olga:
Yeah! Right! Right!

???:
Mayura......

Olga:
Hmm? Ma-Mayura?

Miletta:
Mayura! That's her name!

Olga:
Oh, I see! That's great, Miletta. We finally know her name!

Miletta:
Ahaha! That's the first step. We still need to get to know her better.

Olga:
Yeah. I'm sure we will.

<end of event>

<Year 1013, Day78 - Field Event>

Flee:
All right, that's enough training for today.

Leo:
Phew... finally.

Flee:
Leo, you've grown quite a bit.

Leo:
Of course.

Flee:
Yes, you've turned out well.

Leo:
How's my timing?

Flee:
Hmm... you still need to work on that.

Leo:
What? No way! I did everything just as you said.

Flee:
Yes, but you haven't completely understood the concept.

Leo:
What did I do wrong? Tell me!

Flee:
Your misunderstanding of bravery has made you vulnerable... and shows the
weakness of your spirit.

Leo:
I'm not weak anymore!

Flee:
That, is your weakness. Understand, Leo?

Leo:
Dammit, no!

Flee:
[translate 2]

Leo:
Okay then, Flee. What have you become strong for?

Flee:
To protect people.

Leo:
You're too serious. Not cool, man.

Flee:
Really? Well, if you say so. Eventually you'll understand. By the way...
WATCH YOUR MOUTH!

Leo:
Can't do it!

Flee:
......

<end of event>

<Year 1013, Day 198 - Event after a battle>

Vivid:
Say, Blood, haven't seen you around for a while.

Blood:
Uh, sorry, Vivid. Been busy lately.

Vivid:
Hmm.... But you went to see the girl at the Clock Tower.

Blood:
Oh, Mayura?

Vivid:
Oh dear, you're on first name basis already? Hmmmmph.

Blood:
W-What do you mean?

Vivid:
I'm lonely, don't you see?

Blood:
Um... uh....

Vivid:
Blood, won't you warm my cold lonely heart?

Blood:
Huh?

Vivid:
Hold me!

Blood:
Y-you nut! Don't take off your clothes!

Vivid:
Oh? You're all red.... At your age, you're still so innocent. I'm liking you
more and more!

Blood:
Give me a break.

<end of event>

<Year 1014, Day 154 - In-town Clock Tower Event. This will happen sometime
if you visit the Clock Tower between expeditions>

Mayura:
......

Blood:
Hi, so, how's the clock?

Mayura:
It is fine now.

Blood:
Oh, that's good. Do you know what was wrong with it?

Mayura:
......

Blood:
.... or not. Next time it acts up, don't hesitate to ask us for assistance.
We'd be glad to lend a hand.

Mayura:
.... Why?

Blood:
Why?... Oh, wouldn't it be nice to have some help when you're in trouble?

Mayura:
.... I can handle it myself.

Blood:
.... Good grief.

<end of event>

<Year 1015, Day 112 - Field Event>

Ariah:
Blood. How are you?

Blood:
Not bad, been really busy, thanks to the Balance of Spirits.

Ariah:
.... Can you still not able to see?

Blood:
Eh?

Feeny:
Nevery pays attention, just like always.

Blood:
.... You mean Olga?

Ariah:
His cowardliness is robbing the team of the courage it needs. Do you not
understand? That witch is especially affected. She has a natural talent for
magic. However, she must divide her attention to take care of him, thus unable
to perform up to her maximum potential.

Blood:
That's absurd! Miletta and Olga cannot be separated.

Ariah:
Blood.... Your mission is to assemble a team to rescue this world from
disasters.

Feeny:
Hear hear! You're not here to make friends.

Blood:
Hmmph.

Ariah:
Where is he now?

Blood:
.... On his way to fix the Clock Tower.

Ariah:
Make your decision soon. As for the Caretaker of the Clock Tower, you need not
concern yourself over her.

Blood:
What!?

Ariah:
That girl... is a match that you cannot hope to attain.

Blood:
Wait! What do you mean by that?

Feeny:
The Goddess meant exactly as she said. Lady Ariah can always see the right path
to take. You should know that by now.

Blood:
Yeah... but....

Feeny:
Don't make the same mistake as you had in Barcway. Trust the Goddess.

Blood:
.... Damn it.

<event continues - subchapter: Casualties of War>

Olga:
Yo, Captain! What do you think? We're making good progress, eh?

Blood:
Yeah....

Miletta:
Olga's the best with the hammer.

Olga:
Captain, did you call us to go on another expedition?

Blood:
Yeah, time to leave.... But, Olga, you don't have to come.

Olga:
Huh?

Miletta:
What... do you... mean?

Blood:
The Redfrog Knights no longer requires the services of Olga. Thank you for all
the help you've given us.

Miletta:
.......

Olga:
Wait! Waitamminit! I-I... Whuh? You sayin' I'm useless?

Blood:
No! I mean you're no longer duty-bound to us.

Olga:
But, Miletta and Leo....

Blood:
Their duties here are not finished yet. We need them still.

Olga:
So it's true... you don't need me anymore.

Blood:
No!... Olga, it's not like that.

Olga:
Damn it! Why!? Captain, why just me?

Miletta:
Olga! Stop it!!

Olga:
Miletta?

Miletta:
In the Redfrog Knights the Captain's words are final, understand? Here... wipe
your nose. Don't ruin your good looks.

Olga:
But... but, but. I won't be seeing you often anymore.

Miletta:
.... That's right. But, I will always come back to your side. No matter how far
away I go. I promise. I'll be with you. So... please wait for me.

Olga:
Without you and Leo, what am I supposed to do now?

Miletta:
Lots! Important things!! The renovation for the Clock Tower isn't finished yet,
is it?

Olga:
.... I see....

Blood:
Olga, will you finish the Clock Tower?

Olga:
I understand now, Captain. I'll fix this place up like it's new! So, please
take good care of Miletta. She's my very very very precious....

Blood:
I will.

Olga:
Heh heh. Life with the knights was just a short dream after all...

<Olga leaves the team>

Leo:
... So, just like this. The "fellowship" of the knights you spoke so highly of.

Blood:
Leo....

Leo:
No need for explanations. I've never believed this "fellowship" in the first
place. I'm in this gig for myself only. It's got nothing to do with Olga.

Flee:
Please leave Leo to me.

Blood:
Thanks... I owe you one.
..... Curses.

<When he's all alone, Blood could hardly bear his troubled mind>

Blood:
CURSES! CURSE IT ALL!

Mayura:
Please don't cry...

Blood:
... you....

<For the very first time, a subtle smile appeared on her face.>
<Blood's troubles, sadness, and anger.... They were all understood by her
smile. Only those who truly knew sadness could express it with a smile like
that.>

<end of event>

<Year 1016, Day 15 - Clock Tower Event>

Mayura:
......

Blood:
Mayura, what's up?

Mayura:
..... nice.

Blood:
Excuse me?

Mayura:
Thanks to Miletta and Olga.... The Clock Tower is renewed and it feels nice.

Blood:
Ohh... well, I'm glad you like it.

Mayura:
Yes.... Thank you.

<end of event>

<Year 1016, Day 96 - Field Event>

Leo:
Yo!

Miletta:
Leo?

Leo:
Pfft, what's with that look on your face?

Miletta:
Sorry.

Leo:
What for? Why are you apologizing? That's so uncool. We're heading back soon.
You'll be able to see Olga then.

Miletta:
I can't see him yet. Not when I still have unfinished duties here. I need to do
this for myself.

Leo:
I see....

Miletta:
.... Hopefully, in my absence Olga'll be able to fix some bad habits of his.

Leo:
You're really that worried about him? .... I never realized how much you cared
for that big lummox.

Miletta:
What did you say?

Leo:
Er, ah... nothing.

Miletta:
Ahaha! Whatever, I don't care what people say. Olga's number one in my heart.
He's the centre of my world. With him, I feel like I can do anything!

Leo:
Good grief! You're making me sick.

Miletta:
My bad!... But Leo, Olga's right about you.

Leo:
Huh? Olga?

Miletta:
Yeah, he'd always say, "Leo can't make the most of his talents staying only in
Skulea. If he sees the bigger world outside, he can truly show his potential."

Leo:
......

Miletta:
Olga also loved the way you play your harp and your songs. He'd say, "Will
staying in Skulea stifle his talents?"

Leo:
So, Olga quit the Guild and joined the Redfrog Knights... all for my sake?

Miletta:
.... Who knows? So far things are turning out just fine. Let's not worry too
much about it.

Leo:
.... Why?... That fool. The Skuleans are greedy and shrewd. Shouldn't one be
self-centred to protect oneself?

Miletta:
Yeah, but you ARE our friend.

Leo:
Why are we talking about this anyway? Totally uncool.

<end of event>

[As you keep quelling monsters, a Guide of Nelgo (remember those guys from
Barcway?) would show up after a battle and mention "Secrets of the Mountain
of Death," and "Tears of Darkness." He tells you that if you want to know these
"secrets" then you must go with him to his HQ and join their cult. Then he
starts the silly dance with Flee again.]

<Year 1017, Day 35 - Prophecy Event>

***************
The leaf vein floats
The pedestal of the sundial.
That amniotic fluid is violated by the dark sediment.
The Filth shall turn the world upside down, and sing the Song of Doom.
***************

Blood:
Look! It's finally here....

Leo:
The monster of the Prophecy? Hmph! So uncool.

Blood:
The Prophecy will always be fulfilled. But we're here to stop that from
happening. Let's go!

Miletta:
......

Blood:
Miletta, what's wrong?

Miletta:
...... I'm coming.

<introduce monster ability - "Curse of Death" 死の呪い . See section 7.4>

<fight Prophecy monster>
<after fight>

??? [some guy]:

Hey! You all right?

??? [another guy]:
Not too bad. Did you see that monster just now? It's the first time I've seen
such a thing.

???:
The Redfrog Knights defeated it! They were awesome! There was a little witch
with them that was really something too!

???:
Hahaha, I have no idea what you're babbling about.

Miletta:
.... Olga....

<Year 1017, Day 43 - HQ>

Blood:
Nicely fought, everyone. Let's celebrate!

Leo:
Um, may I sing?

Blood:
? Yeah... of course.

<Leo's slender fingers caressed the harp's strings, and sang with a deep
powerful voice. Without anyone's notice, Leo's clear, light voice has become
the deep powerful voice of a man. As Blood was immersed in the music, he patted
Flee softly on the back. Miletta and Olga stood up and faced everyone.>

Blood:
Olga!.... It's been a while.

Olga:
It has, it has, well, I.... it has.

Blood:
Take it easy, why don't you sit down?

Miletta:
Well... We're actually saying goodbye.

Blood:
Huh?

Olga:
The Clock Tower's renovation is complete... that... that... um....

Miletta:
We're thinking about starting up a construction company in a small town
somewhere.

Blood:
Miletta....

Miletta:
Captain. I'm sorry. I don't know how much longer I can keep up with you
physically. When we defeated the monster I felt my strength drain out suddenly.
It seems I've fulfilled all I've set out to do. My next duty is to be by Olga's
side and look after him.

Olga:
That's my duty too! To be by Miletta's side and look after her.

Leo:
I talked to them before. There was no need for them to stay with us. Isn't that
right?

Blood:
.......

Leo:
Hey, say something!

Blood:
If your decision makes you happy, then I approve.

Leo:
So it's decided! All right! Today will be the fairwell party for Miletta and
Olga.

<Miletta leaves the team.>

<As everyone enjoyed their last party with Olga and Miletta, Blood began to
doubt his own words. Is everyone's happiness his duty? Then he thought about
Ariah's words. Will he truly bring happiness to everyone simply by being
victorious?>

Vivid:
Such fancy food today. Don't mind if I help myself.

Blood:
Vivid! Where did you pop up from?

Vivid:
Oh, I was just on the way to run some errands. Just so happened that your place
is on the way so I thought I'd drop in and say hi. Or, could it be that our
fates are tied together by a red string? Tee hee hee.

[editor's note: In far Eastern cultures, it is believed that two lovers
destined for each other are tied together with an invisible red string. This
belief originally came from China.]

Blood:
You always seem so happy-go-lucky.

Vivid:
Why do you say that? But, you do seem somewhat bitter today. It's written all
over your face.

Blood:
Let me ask you. Do you live your life to be always absolutely right in
everything?

Vivid:
Oh, not at all!

Blood:
.... Really?

Vivid:
Isn't it obvious?! It's because we make mistakes that tomorrow comes to this
world. And since there's no "righteousness," we should aim for a world that is
even just a little bit better. Don't you think?

Blood:
I see.... A bit extreme, but it's a new opinion.

Vivid:
Well? Are you even more in love with me now?

Blood:
Why the hell would that happen?

Vivid:
Good ol' Blood. Still a little slow. Oh well, there's plenty of time. Anyway,
thanks for the food! [leaves]

Blood:
.... I'm sorry, Miletta and Olga. As leader...I should have been thinking more
on my own.

<At the end of the party, everyone went to bed. All except Blood, who was
troubled and couldn't sleep.>

Ariah:
You have done well this time, Blood Boal.

Blood:
You again. Quite an elusive Goddess you are.

Feeny:
Ah, haven't changed a bit. Show the Goddes some respect!

Ariah:
It's all right Feeny. Calm yourself.

Feeny:
.... Yes.

Ariah:
You have prevented the disaster of 1017. However, you must not let down your
guard. The next prophecy is close at hand. "In the year 1020, the "Disaster of
Dark Eternity" will awaken in the southern lands and cover the green world with
its wings. The green world will be lost, as will all life. The entire world
will gasp and sway. Soon, green will be tainted red." This prophecy predicts
that in three years the "Disaster of Dark Eternity" will rise in Tygor Valley
and destroy the village.

Blood:
Disaster... of Eternity....

Ariah:
Your current team is satisfactory for dealing with the disaster. Remember, the
disaster WILL occur three years from now.

Blood:
Three years... from now.

Ariah:
Is that understood?

Blood:
Aah. Yes, Three years from now. I'll do my best....

Ariah:
I will look forward to your performance, Blood Boal.

[continue with expedition until year 1020.]

<Year 1020, Day 55 - Prophecy Event - "Endless Suffering">

??? [old man]:
Sir Knights! Please help us! Please save our village!

Flee:
Mr. Malvero! It's you isn't it, Mr. Malvero! I'm Flee!

Malvero:
Uh, Flee? That snotty-nosed kid? Is it really you?

Flee:
Yes! Long time no see.

Malvero:
... What a nice surprise... Seems like you've turned out really well.

Flee:
How's everyone in the village?

Malvero:
They're hiding in an underground cave that we dug so they're okay for now.

Flee:
What a relief....

Malvero:
It's the first time any of us faced such a monster. We don't know what to do...

Blood:
You saw the monster? What does it look like?

Malvero:
Um.... It's a big green dragon that breathes fire.

Blood:
It's them! The ones who attacke Barcway ten years ago....

Flee:
The Disaster of Dark Eternity - Nagzossal?

Malvero:
Nagzossal... That's it! That's what that dark warrior was calling the monster.

Blood:
They're there! Flee, let's go!

Flee:
Yes, sir! Don't worry Malvero, we'll make sure the village is safe.

Malvero:
Thank you, Flee!

Blood:
It seems the Prophecy is correct again.

Flee:
Damn it, my village....

Blood:
Don't worry Flee. We will be victorious.

Flee:
Mr. Blood....

Blood:
This is the reason why you've trained so hard. Go with confidence!

<As the knights approached, they saw a gigantic shadow - a dark, shapeless,
non-corporeal shadow>

Blood:
You bastards.... Wahlrus.... Let's go! Flee!!!

Flee:
Yes, sir!

Blood:
DIE!!!!!!

<introduce monster ability "steal life" 生命力奪取 (see section 7.4). Fight
Nagzossal>

<Defeat Nagzossal. By preventing the Prophecy from happening, the entry in the
Book of Prophecy for the year 1020 was transformed.>

??? [dark knight]:
You.... I've seen you before. Your appearance have not changed... Immortal?

Blood:
So what if I am?

???:
Why do you help the humans? These... weaklings with such short lifespans?

Blood:
Because I'm also human!

???:
Heh... Heheheheheh. Amusing fellow. Give me your name, so I will remember you.

Blood:
Blood Boal. You don't need to remember it, because I will defeat you in a
moment.

Zeek:
Now now, don't be rude. My name is Zeek. I have a feeling we will meet again
many times in the long future.

Blood:
What are you talking about! We've already defeated your general. And I WILL
have your head.

Zeek:
Such foolishness.

Blood:
What!?

Zeek:
The weakest living things in this world are human beings. All they possess are
shallow, meaningless lives.... You see, Blood. We, as immortals, are above
them. However, the great Nagzossal surpasses even the likes of us!

Blood:
Nagzossal is dead! We prevented the Prophecy of Doom.

Zeek:
He is not limited by death. The great Nagzossal will reincarnate. He will
reborn again and again, continuing until eternity.

Dee:
HEEHEEHEEHEE.... All that work for nothing. You were so caught up with the
Book of Prophecy that you don't realize you've ultimately fallen into the grasp
of Nagzossal's powers. The world WILL be destroyed by Nagzossal. The Great
Destruction cannot be prevented! HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE! [flies away]

Narrator:
The Knights realized the shocking truth of Zeek's revelation. They felt empty
and helpless even after the defeat of Nagzossal. Everyone has been thinking the
worst outcome - that the world will still end despite their valiant efforts.
Victory should be joyous, but the knights could not find strength to even
smile.

One by one, the villagers emerged from their hideout. Not knowing the truth
about Nagzossal, they were very happy that the monster was defeated. Smiles
also returned to the knights' faces as they saw the villagers' joy. They now
know that their efforts were not wasted.

Malvero:
Thank you Flee! The village is proud of you!

Flee:
The village still suffered a lot of damage. Most of the crops were destroyed.

Malvero:
Well, don't you worry. As long as we are still alive we can always make it back
onto our feet. We still have our health, and that's what matters.

Flee:
Yes....

Malvero:
Don't worry Flee. You've helped us plenty already.

Flee:
So, now that the village's disaster is prevented, let's head back to Skulea.

Leo:
.... You sure it's all right?

Flee:
Nagzossal will appear again. For now, there's no need to linger here.

Leo:
Flee! Am I... so undependable?

Flee:
Leo......

Leo:
Are you just going to leave these wimpy old folks in this crappy backwoods
village?

Flee:
......

Blood:
... Flee, it's ok. You can stay.

Flee:
Mr. Blood?

Blood:
Leo is right. Your duty now lies with this village. You know that too, don't
you?

Flee:
But I... I've made a promise to Master Wahlrus. I will never leave Mr. Blood
unattended.

Leo:
That's why I'M here! For the past nine years, isn't that why you've been
training and teaching me?

Flee:
Leo? You....

Blood:
He's right, I'm not unattended with Leo around. Besides, no matter where you
are you will always be our comrade. Right, Leo?

Leo:
.... Yeah... if you put it that way....

Flee:
.... Sorry! Leo... please take this.

Narrator:
Flee passed on the charm of Kugaibuna leaves that was given to him by Wahlrus.

Flee:
This will help calm your soul and protect you. You don't have to say anything.
Just take it.

Leo:
Who said I was going to refuse? Give it here!

Flee:
Remember. Distance/timing is the key. Next, a determined resolve.

Leo:
I know I know. You've said that thousands of times already.... Don't worry, I
will become even stronger.

Flee:
I know you will. You are my proudest pupil. Live well, Leo!

Leo:
Uh... Th-th... thank you... for everything. Thank you very much!

<Flee leaves the team>

<Year 1020, Day 71, Tygor>
<After saying goodbye to Flee, the knights prepared to head home. Flee gave
Leo a map of the forest trails they can take to get back. However, as they
travelled the trail became windier and smaller. Soon, they cam to a dead end.>

Blood:
Hey Leo, we're lost, aren't we?

Leo:
Sh-shut up! I'm not good at reading maps.

Blood:
...... Why didn't you say so earlier?

Leo:
I can't say that in front of Flee!

??? [old man]:
Are you lost?

Blood:
... Who are you?

Jashi:
Jashi. I've been living in this woods for 68 years.

Blood:
We are the Redfrog Knights. We are on our way home after quelling the monster
in Tygor Valley. Elder Jashi, can you show us the way out of these woods?

Jashi:
Hmm... little ones. Lend me your ears.

Leo:
No! we're in a hurry. We have no time to listen to a crusty old man's lecture!

Jashi:
It is a very, very old tale. A long long story that continues perhaps even
until now.

[V&B trivia: This is also the intro to Seven: Molmorth no Kiheitai when you
start the game.]

Leo:
Hey! Didn't you hear what I said?

Jashi:
In the world there were five. Five who lived together in harmony in this world.
However, one of them created a world beyond this world. A world for a limited
few.

Blood:
The world beyond?

Jashi:
The "Spirit Realm." Far, far away, a distant land. It is a place separated from
this world. It is an eutopia of happiness and stability.

Of the five, two went to the Spirit Realm. The other two began fighting, and
settled in the world below. As for the fifth....

Blood:
What did the fifth do!?

Jashi:
Who know?... What did the fifth one do...? The pilfered, the despised, the
intimidated, they are all unfortunate ones. But the most unfortunate of them
all... is the forgotten. Do you understand?

Blood:
Is this... history?

Jashi:
Who knows? My memory of the distant land... is only a story that flows like
water. Water that flows from top to bottom. Souls are drawn from bottom to top.
Again and again from the "Gate of Spirits" to the "Tears of Darkness." Remember
that well.

Blood:
"Five races," "Spirit Realm," "Tears of Darkness," "Gate of Spirits"...?
Elder Jashi!? You know something that will affect our world, don't you?

Jashi:
What I know is only a story. As well as... the way out of the woods.

Narrator:
[gives a summary of events so far]

[Meeting with Ariah. summary: Ariah is very angry and disappointed with Blood
for letting Flee go without her consultation. Flee is in his prime and could
be useful to the team for another ten years. Ariah then reads the next Prophecy
which will occur in the year 1026. Feeny, of course, is being his usual cheeky
self. Blood begins to doubt the "absoluteness" of the Goddess.]

The Prophecy:
"The sediment will fall in the boundary where the earth touch the sky.
There it will fester, and the infection will violate the maiden."

<end Chapter 5>

__5.6 - CHAPTER VI - THE IMMORTALS__

[Continue with the expedition until the prophecised event in 1026. As usual,
there will be random events triggered by either going around the town or
walking around the world map.]

<Year 1021, Day 281 - Clock Tower event>

Blood:
Hey, Mayura!

Mayura:
Hello.

Blood:
I love the sound of the bell.

Mayura:
The Bell of Sil reflects the heart of the listener.

Blood:
!? Really?

Mayura:
According to legend.

Blood:
Oh....

Mayura: [smiles] But... it it's true... I would think so too if I see Blood.

Blood:
Huh?

<end of event>

<Naraku Event. This special event will occur any time you visit the Dark Guild
in Skulea (second from last choice on the town menu) between 1022 and 1036.>

Leo:
Like I said, we shouldn't be here....

Blood:
I can't help but feel interest in the password needed to enter the inner
room....

Leo:
Do you really want to see the inner room that much?

Blood:
No, not at all. But when I hear there is a mysterious password....

Leo:
It's a waste of time! Don't expect me to tag along!

Vivid:
Blood! It's been a while. I missed you!!

Blood:
Vivid!? Why are you here at Naraku?

Vivid:
I promised myself to make the steets of Skulea safe at night. Tee hee.

Leo:
There, you see! Now we have dodgy company. I'm going home!!

Vivid:
Hey, little boy. Running away already? I have something good for you....

Leo:
I will not accept any contract from Naraku!

Vivid:
.... If you take on this job. I promise you'll get the password.

Blood:
What's the job?

Leo:
Blood, NO!

Blood:
Even the Redfrog Knights need to know how the underground society works.

Leo:
He has really become persuasive.

Guild's Monk:
Long time no see. Please consider Vivid's offer. Maybe it would be better if I
gave this request to a bunch of strangers like you guys. The one who usually
takes on this kind of bothersome work is currently unavailable.

Blood:
So the password is...?

Guild's Monk:
You will receive it with your payment upon completion of the mission.

[now you get to choose: first choice - accept the mission. Second choice -
decline.]

Guild's Monk:
Good. Transaction complete. I will only say this once, so listen well. You know
the Main Canal No. 0? (<正面0番水路>) Lately, our scouts have been reporting
monster sightings in that area.

Leo:
There are monsters in the canal?

G.M.:
Yes. I also have "something" to take care of over there. Having a monster
hanging around there would be most bothersome.

Blood:
So, you need us to go and deal with it.

G.M.:
I have a lot of things I want to finish up here, but I want to avoid being
conspicious. You, on the other hadn, have a reputation for quelling monsters.

Blood:
That's true. We'll go now. In return, you'll tell us the password.

G.M.:
Yes, of course. As long as you succeed.

Leo:
.... How the hell did things turn out like this...?

<change scene - underground waterway cave>

Leo:
Well well, what a mess we've gotten ourselves into. On the other hand, I've
never seen this cave under the canal before....

Blood:
Yes, I am certain this canal leads to the headwater.

<monster roar>

Blood:
Leo!

Leo:
Yeah, I know. Monster's here.

<fight monster>
<after fight>

Blood:
Phew! Mission accomplished.

Leo:
Yeah, Naraku must not be much of an organization if it was so intimidated by
that thing.... but I wonder, what was the monk up to here?

Blood:
Who knows... there are lots of holes and crevices around here. Maybe they use
this place to hide something?
!?.... This, can it be......

Leo:
...! I see. This place is used for "disposal." Blood. Let's not hang around
here any longer.

Blood:
Yes, I agree.

<back to the guild>

G.M.:
Good work. So, it seems "that person" is not the only one who can deal with
this type of situation. You are skillful. I like it.

Vivid:
That goes without saying. After all he's a man I can count on. Right Blood?

G.M.:
Here is your commission. You may leave.

Blood:
Uhh... You haven't told us the password yet.

G.M.:
.... All right. Remember it well, for I will not repeat it. When you are asked
"Vivid-chan" you should answer with "is the greatest." That is all.

Blood:
...... You must be joking right?

Vivid:
Hee hee hee. It's true. That's always been the password.

Leo:
Say, isn't our commission a bit on the short side?

G.M.:
We had to deduct some as the middle-man fee.

Leo:
And the middle-man is....

Blood:
Vivid!?

G.M.:
WaHAHAHAHAHA! Y'all rookies after all. This is to be expected when you deal
with <Naraku>.

<change scene - back at HQ>

Leo:
We got totally gypped. What a ripoff, paying us so little to carry out a job
in such a hideous place! Blood. Please, for heaven's sake don't ever take
another job from that place.

Blood:
Sorry, my bad. But at least now we don't need to worry about that place
anymore, eh?

Leo:
Hey, hey....

<end event, continue with expedition>

<Year 1023, Day 254 - Clock Tower>

Blood:
Hey, Mayura!

Mayura:
.... Blood....

Blood:
I have something to ask you.... How do you usually cook the mountain veggies
that Filshia gave you?

Mayura:
The usual way.

Blood:
... C-can you be more specific?

Mayura:
... Steep it in hot water first. Cut, and coat with flour. Then, deep fry.

Blood:
That sounds really good. Can you write it down for me? We don't really have
anyone on the team who knows how to cook.

Mayura:
.... Shall I make something for you?

Blood:
Would you? That would be great! You just made my day! Come on, let's go.
Everyone's hungry.

Mayura:
Okay.

<end event>

<Year 1025, Day 102 - Field Event>

Ariah:
It seems you have been quite busy lately. Have you been taking care of
yourself?

Blood:
Uh... Yeah, I'm all right.

Ariah:
It seems that way. Even I am surprised at how much this unit has improved.

Blood:
I want to be able to overcome the prophesised monster next year.

Ariah:
That's right.... Though, the year 1036 will be even more significant. For that
is the year when an important flow of event will be determined. After that
everything unusual will go to the Royal Capital.

Blood:
I see.... At any rate, next year's monster must still be defeated.

Ariah:
Yes.... After that, be prepared to stop the events in 1036.

Blood:
I understand. ... By the way, that pint-sized fellow isn't here today?

Ariah:
[looks worried] Lately, Feeny has been going out quite often.

Blood:
I see. It's boring to always be on the outskirts of a city.

Ariah:
It's not boring at all.

Blood:
Okay, but the fact is the city is a lot of fun. Next time, I can take you
around, yeah?

Ariah:
Th-that will not be neccessary. A walk around town, just the two of us....
certainly.

Blood:
Certainly?

Ariah:
Nothing. Never mind!

<end of event>

<Year 1026, Day 2 - After battle event>

Vivid:
Blood, how's it going?

Blood:
Not bad. Haven't seen you around lately.

Vivid:
Oh? Did you miss me? Aw, sorry about that. I was on a long trip to Grantaros
Lake.

Blood:
Grantaros?

Vivid:
That's the place where the "Tears of Darkness" will occur.

Blood:
So what were you doing at such a place??

Vivid:
Well.... This and that.

Blood:
You're always travelling around, aren't you?

Vivid:
That's right. I guess only when I am together with my true love will i be able
to settle down.

Blood:
......

Vivid:
Mm...? Aren't you going to say something like "let me be with you forever?"

Blood:
Why would I say something like that....

Vivid:
Geeze, you just never grow up! Hurry up and become a "man" okay?

Blood:
Now look here....

<end event>

[to be continued]

+------------------------------------+
| 6. THE BATTLE SYSTEM AND GAME PLAY |
+------------------------------------+

Since the battle system in V&B is identical to Seven, I've mostly just copy/
paste the information from my Seven FAQ with minor updates.

_6.1 - Arranging Troops_

The battles in V&B require careful tactical planning by the player. Before the
battle begins, the player will be shown the stats of the enemy (hit points,
strength, defence, attack pattern, special attacks, etc). The player will then
choose seven characters from his troop and arrange them on a 3x4 grid.

+-+-+-+-+
| | | | | <-- Heal
+-+-+-+-+
| | | | | <-- Attack/Defence support
+-+-+-+-+
| | | | | <-- Front line
+-+-+-+-+

The bottom row is the front line. Troops placed on that row will be in direct
combat with the enemy. They are the ones who will deal damage to and receive
damage from the enemy you fight. The front line will receive full damage from
the enemy unless they are being defended by supporting troops in the middle
row.

The middle row is the support row. Troops with attack or defence support
abilities will aid the front line from the middle row. They will be marked with
a red arrow (attack support) or a green arrow (defence support) or both. Note
that a character from the this row can only support a front line character that
is directly in front of him or her. Attack and Defence support do not work
diagonally. Troops with attack support will help the front line to deal more
damage. Troops with defence support will shield the front line from enemy
damage. However, if the enemy deals more damage than the defending supporter
can block, then the difference is spilled over and damage the front line. The
defenders themselves do not take any damage when shielding the front line
(they have strong shields!).

Finally, the top row is the recover/heal row. Troops with the healing ability
will heal themselves or others when placed in this row. There are two types of
healing - Heal Self and Heal Row. Troops with Heal Self can only heal
themselfves. On the other hand, troops with Heal Row cannot heal themselves,
but they can heal everyone else in that row. Note that troops without healing
abilities will have to rely on those with the Heal Row ability. During battle
it is important for the front line to be rotated to the back so they can heal
themselves (more on rotation later).

How you arrange your troops will depend on the monster you fight against. Look
over the monster data carefully. Every thing can be calculated before hand, you
can even plan and decide who gets to deal the final blow if you wish. However,
there are random chances of your troops dealing out extra damage (especially
with samurais and magicians) that cannot be predicted.

_6.2 - During the Battle_

During the battle, the computer AI takes over and your troops will attack/
defend/heal on their own. You have little control over your troops other than
deciding whether or not to rotate the rows after each turn. Rotation is one of
the key strategy in the game. You will find that certain monsters are easier
with rotation, while others are easier if you don't rotate. Of course, you'll
have to arrange your troop according to your rotating strategy.

When rotating, the back row will hop forward to the middle row, the middle
row will hop the the front row, and the front row will jump to the back row.
Thus, the front line can now heal themselves in the back row, the back row
would become the supporters in the middle row, and the middle row now bicomes
the front line to fight. Sounds a bit confusing, but it's very clear once you
see it.

Rotation is important since the supporters from the middle row can only use
their abilities once per rotation. So, if you choose not to rotate and have the
front line fight a second turn, they will not get any attack support because it
was used up in the first battle turn. Defend support is possible after the
first turn if the monster hadn't attacked that character during the first turn.

Rotation will also cancel out status ailments such as petrify.

Also keep in mind that troops with healing abilities can only heal when they
are in the back row. Note that the healers in the back row will always heal
every turn. So, if you do not rotate, the healers in the back will keep healing
themselves. This leads to critical charge. If someone receives cummulative
healing that equals to twice his/her hit points, he/she will become critical
charged and you'll see flames surrounding the character. Critical charged
characters deal extra damage.

There are other advantages to not rotate. Many enemies can heal themselves,
some enemies can defend, and some enemies have extra damage attacks. Like your
troops, they can only use those abilities once per rotation. So, if you don't
rotate, they won't be able to heal or use those extra attack/defend abilities.

Another option you can use during the battle is summon spirits if you have any
by pressing square. If you have more than one summon spirits keep pressing
square to cycle through them until you get to the one you want. More on summon
spirits later.

_6.3 - Game Play_

FATIGUE - After a battle, if the total amount of damage that a character has
received is equal or more than his/her total hit points and he/she survived the
fight (due to healing), then he/she will be fatigued. A fatigued character will
be denoted by a blue sad face. The stats (other than HP) of a fatigued
character will decrease as they don't perform as well when tired. A normal
character is denoted by a yellow neutral face. A well-rested character is
denoted by a red happy face. Stats other than HP of a well-rested character
will increase. If you have fatigued characters after a battle, switch them out
and let them rest through the next few battles.

As you return to the stronghold after an expedition, one random character will
become sick or fatigued while two random characters will become extra-healthy
(you'll see them glow).

-----

ELEMENT TYPE - Some of your troops or enemies will be aligned to an element
(earth, air, water, or fire). The dominance of elements goes like this:

  AIR > EARTH
   ^ v
 FIRE < WATER

When a dominating element attacks a dominated element, the damage is increased
by 25%. When a dominated element attacks a dominating element, the damage is
reduced by 25%. For example, when WATER attacks FIRE, it will do 25% more
damage. But, when FIRE attacks WATER, it will do 25% less damage.

-----

ITEMS - Only one item can be equipped per person. Item can be equipped in the
troops arrangement screen, and will increase the character's parameters. Most
items have a profession requirement.

You may have 32 items in stock. Items equipped by characters in battle will
level up when the battle is won. As they level up their bonus attributes will
increase. Most items can be raised up to level 9. After level 9 the items
will turn crappy. Unequipping the item will reset the item experience to the
most recently gained level. Special and rare items usually start at level 10 to
12 with high attributes. Those items will become junk once they level up, so
don't forget to unequip them to reset the experience.

When a team member with an item equipped died in combat, you can have the item
passed on to another member that meets the profession requirement or return
it to the team's item stock. Items passed on will retain half of the current
experience. Items returned to the team stock will have the experience set to 0.
When you retire a team member, he or she can also pass on his/her item to
another team member.

-----

THE TAVERN - You can recruit new members for your team here. Recruiting will
take 120 days. Three new recruits will show up for you to select. As you
defeat monsters in your expedition, words will get around, your reputation
will be heard, and new recruits will automatically show up at the tavern. The
more monster you kill (and the higher the monster level), the higher the
number of new recruits showing up.

Later on in the game, the Tavern is also the place to get rumour leads (see
Rumours later in this section).

-----

AGE - your troops and characters will age as the game progresses. Everyone has
a growth phase, peak performance phase, and decline phase. During the growth
phase the character's stats will increase once a year. The stats will stablise
with little increase during the peak performance phase. Finally, when a
character reaches his/her age of decline the stats will actually decrease with
each year.

-----

SAFETY METER - The Balance of Spirits (received in Ch. 5) is also your "safety
meter," an indication of how well you're doing against the monsters. You start
out at 60 and the value can go as high as 99. Whenever you defeat a monster the
value will go up. At the end of the year, if there are monsters still alive
then the meter will go down. Open up the world map by pressing L1 and move the
cursor over to a monster on the map. A box will tell you how much it will cause
the meter to go down per year (年). You will also see how much you'll get by
defeating the monster, and how much time you have left before the monster
demolish the place it's terrorizing.

-----

RELATIONSHIPS - When two characters fight side by side in battle formation,
their relationship will improve. Characters with supporting abilities also
improve relationship with other characters that they are supporting. Basically,
whenever a character does something, he or she attracts the characters next to
him or her.

+-+-+-+-+
|M| |K| |
+-+-+-+-+
|W|S|V| |
+-+-+-+-+
|B|B| | |
+-+-+-+-+

For example - The monk "M" in the back row can heal a whole row, since his
action affects the entire row, he can attract knight "K". When K heals himself,
he can attract people next to him, but in this formation no one is next to him.
In the support row, witch "W" and samurai "S" support the barbarians "B" with
attacking, so the B's become attracted to them. Characters doing a support
action can only attract people they are directly supporting. Valkyrie "V" can
shoot from second row, so she can attract S when she does so. The B's in front
attract each other when they attack because they are side by side.

Obviously, the relationships can get quite messy because everyone is gathered
in a clump. If you want a force a certain relationship to 'work' you can buffer
the characters with unique characters (ie, Blood, Leo, Flee, etc) because they
are integral to the plot and isn't affected by the relationship system.

Now, when the characters of the same gender are close to each other then a
strong friendship bond will form. You will see an event and those two
characters can summon spirits during battle (see below).

If characters of opposite sex are close to each other, they will fall in love.
You'll get to see scenes of them dating. Once they are in love and an official
couple, there's a chance they will get married every time you return home from
an expedition. Once they are married, there's a chance a baby will born when
you get back from expedition. You even get to name the kid. The child will take
on a profession of one of the parents, and will have higher stats than the
parents. Note that couples in their declining age cannot produce offsprings.

-----

THE GESTALT BOARD - You can access the Gestalt Board in the headquarters. Use
this to view the character relationships. Look at it every time you return to
the headquarters from an expedition. You'll see characters gravitate towards
one another. Official couples are denoted by hearts. If a proposal has been
made then you'll see light pink rays. Married couples get bigger pink rays.

Official friendship bonds are denoted by light blue rays. Those characters can
summon spirits when they are fighting a battle together.

-----

SUMMON SPIRITS - The type of spirit summoned depends on the profession
(refer to the game manual p. 33). Only one type of spirit can be summoned by
each pair of friends. The spirit will show up at the special event when the
friendship bond is formed. For example, if a Warrior and a Monk form a bond,
the spirit showing up will either be Unicorn or Undine. All summon spirits will
deal massive damage to the enemy, as well as secondary effects. Going down the
list, their secondary effects are:

Key:
[summon spirit] - [summoned by] - [secondary effect after dealing damage]

Unicorn - Warrior, Knight, Barbarian - Front row members' HP x 2
Mournee - Magician, Adventurer - Cast Curse of Death on enemy
Undine - Monk, Cleric - All teammates regain to full HP
Inferno - Wizard, Witch - Enemy cannot move in the next attack turn
Aerie - Archer, Valkyrie - Front row members critical charged
Rahkish - Shaman, Sibyl - Petrify enemy
Amanomitsurugi - Samurai, Ninja - Front row members' Speed x 2
Fafneel - Paladin, Warrior Mage - Revive dead teammates

-----

RUMOURS - After you get the rumours from the barkeep, check the world map.
Rumour locations are marked with a blue flag. Those are places you must go to
get the exact details of the rumour. If the blue flag marks a large town with
many sections, then you must go to different parts of the town until you bump
into the person who will let you in on the details (music will change). The
detail of the rumour will tell you where to go next, which is then marked by
an orange flag on the world map.

Starting at Chapter 9, two particular rumours should be looked for: Horse drawn
carriages 馬車 and Faerie Path 妖精の道 as they will help you save a
significant amount of time when travelling.

-----

SOME GENERAL TIPS:

When arranging troops, keep in mind each troop's abilities (can check by
pressing the square button during arrangement). Also keep in mind the enemy's
abilities and attack patterns so you can counter them. Pay attention to your
attack power, defence power, and healing power.

-----
Also, when arranging troops, you will see percentile numbers near the bottom of
the grid. This shows the chance of that person getting attacked by the enemy.

-----
The troop that deals the finishing blow will level up. Maximum is level five.

-----
The enemy's HP, attack power, defence power, heal, special attacks, and attack
patterns will be available to you when you arrange your troop. Use the info to
your advantage.

-----
Some monsters have a preference to who they like to attack. For example, some
monsters will attack females. If there's a female character in the front line,
then she will always get attacked. If there are no females, then the enemy
attacks as normal.

Other attack preferences include: attack row-healers, attack self-healers,
attack the oldest/youngest, etc. Always check the monster info.
