Great arcade party game
Crazy Taxi started in the arcades and the Sega Dreamcast, but part 1 has made his way into the Playstation 2 courtesy of Acclaim. The game is practically identical to the Dreamcast version and that can be a bad thing or a good thing, depending on who you ask. This game is not for everyone, but those who enjoy it will love it.
Their is no such thing as a story per se...you just pick a cab driver and speed off to make ''some crazy money''
The game plays like most arcade games, that means, heavy on action and short on game modes.
Arcade Mode: Arcade mode presents the same city as in the arcade counterpart, with the same shortcuts and fare locations. You can play the game under arcade rules, that means that you start with 99 seconds and most play as fast as possible, getting fares to their location in time in order to extend the playing time. You can also play for set periods of 3, 5 or 10 minutes, but the lack of pressure that the arcade rules provides makes the pace less hectic. It is not boring, but it can get old quickly.
Original Mode: This mode offers a different, more difficult city. The locations and fares are located on hard to reach places for the most part and it offers a more difficult challenge than the arcade mode. You can play the game under arcade rules or in set time periods of 3, 5 or 10 minutes. The gameplay is identical to the arcade mode.
Crazy Box: In this mode you are given a set of difficult challenges to accomplish under a set time limit. Stuff like longest jump, drift combos or deliver passengers to a specific location on a short amount of time. It's basically a collection of mini-games and they vary from fun to frustrating.
The controls are easy to learn and you can configure them to your liking. Only 5 buttons are needed(counting the left analog stick). One button for acceleration, one for brake, one to toggle drive and one to toggle reverse. A combination of this buttons allow you to perform special moves like a turbo boost or the crazy drift, which is a powerslide.
The options in this game are superb, since it allows you to toggle time speed and traffic difficulty in order to make the game as challenging or easy as you want.
Dreamcast quality, but still good. Nothing hampers them that much, but their is nothing that stands out and amazes you.
Great music with amazing sound effects and funny sound samples like the fares yelling ''You hit it!!'' ''You are a great driver'', ''Look at the time'', ''Take me to Pizza Hut'' among others add atmostphere to the game.
Replay value: 7/10
This is a game that will have you coming back for more, specially with a bunch of crazy friends, as they pass the controller around and start trying to beat each other's grade.
Buy or Rent: BUY
This is a great party game and one you can use to relax from a tough RPG or a hard action game.
Rating: 4.0 - Great
