Grand Theft Auto III is the first game in the famous series to have been rendered with 3D graphics.
Set to be released in September or early October 2001, the original release date was pushed back toward the end of October due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This led to speculation from many players that some of the games content as been removed or altered as the game has been set in inspired New York City.
Rockstar did confirmed that 1% of the games content had been removed or changed because of the events. These were cosmetic details changes on a few vehicles, pedestrian comments and lines from the radio dialogue were changed. One mission was removed as it referenced terrorists. The biggest change was the packaging they thought was extreme after 9/11. The original intended packaging however was released in Europe.

In Grand Theft Auto III, the main character's real name is never revealed. It is not until Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, in which the main character (or someone looking very suspiciously like him) is met alongside another GTAIII character, Catalina, as her boyfriend. It is there that you learn that the main character of GTAIII is named Claude.
According to the audio files, Claude, despite being a silent character, has a total of 27 voice tracks. All of them are grunts.

Police helicopter co-pilot: Have you read the manual for this thing?
(heard from the helicopter speakers as you're being chased)
Gentleman: My mother's my sister!

Donald Love: Nothing drives down real estate prices like a good old-fashioned gang war. Apart from an outbreak of plague, but that might be going a bit too far in this case.
Laszlow on the radio; taking callers as they phone in:
"Caller" I'm promoting my organization, Citizens Raging Against Phones
"Lazlow" Crap? Your organization is called CRAP? How many people are there in this crap?
"YOU WERENT SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO GET HERE..."
- A sign in a Staunton Island parking lot, across from the Love Media building: you're unable to get there without cheating or tedious other actions
Kenji: When trouble looms, the fool turns his back, while the wise man faces it down.
"Woman on radio" I've tried everything, and I just couldn't keep those extra two-hundred pounds off! It started to affect my marriage.
"Husband replying" She was too big for me, and I'll sleep with anything!
Connection to Other Media
One type of pedestrian, which appears randomly along with all other pedestrians, wear a construction worker outfit and say lines such as "Young man", "There's no need to feel down", "In the YMCA" and "In the navy".
This all references the disco band Village People - one of them performs dressed as a construction worker, and the lines are parts of different song lyrics.
The entire mission Two-Faced Tanner is a mockery of the Driver series; the briefing starts with you being told you need to take out a "strangely animated undercover cop" who is "useless outside of his car". The appearance of Tanner and his 70's like car also matches the Driver games.
The Driver series is about an undercover police officer named Tanner, and the two lines from the briefing is referencing how little you could do after exiting your car in Driver 2.
The string of Marty Chonk's missions - The Crook -The Thieves - His Wife - Her Lover, is a reference to 1989 crime drama movie The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Love.
Flashback FM's playlist is lifted from the Scarface (1983) soundtrack. When the radio station returned in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005), it was instead filled with classic Giorgio Moroder tunes. This seems a deliberate throwback, since Moroder wrote and produced the entire Scarface soundtrack.
